Many of us have anecdotes, stories and special memories of St. Peter s, both with respect to its people and to the building itself. Together, these stories form and shape the history and community of St. Peter s Cathedral, and we would love to preserve these stores so they can be shared with each other and enjoyed for all time. Some of the memories may be humorous or joyful; others may be sad or contemplative. You may know why a part of the building is the way it is, or may have witnessed an important event in our church s history. You may have fond memories passed down from your ancestors, or your own memories from an event that happened last week! These can be moments experienced through the wise eyes of a senior or the innocence of a child. If you think you have a story worth sharing, we would love to hear it! The Parish Life Committee is embarking on a plan to collect these stores and preserve them in an anthology. We are asking for written stories, but we also have a committee that will gladly come and record your story if you prefer to tell it to us orally. Take some time to go down memory lane and see what comes to you. A box to collect these stores will be at Sunday Coffee Hour or call Jane Ross at to ask to have your story recorded. From Your Parish Life Committee Women on the Move: Mind, Body and Spirit The PEI ACW Women s Annual Retreat will be held on Oct 18 th from 9:30am to 3:30pm at St Mark s Anglican Church in Kensington. 4 NEW RECTOR FOR ST. PETER S CATHEDRAL Since our Rector, Canon Peter Harris, announced in May that he would be retiring by Advent, Vestry has been very busy with the process of finding a new Rector for the Cathedral. As many of you know, we held a Special Parish Meeting on June 1, chaired by Archdeacon John Clarke to understand the process, outline the Parish s requirements, and to select our Parochial Committee that would work with Bishop Cutler on the search process. The Committee included Edgar MacDonald, Carole Ann Michael, Maurice Rogerson, Eric Edward, Edie Rogers (Secretary) and Rory Francis (Chair). The Parish Profile was submitted to Bishop Cutler on June 27 and the Rector position was posted on July 1 for a one-month period. The Committee met with Bishop cutler on August 1 to screen applicants and confirm interviews. On September 7, Bishop Cutler, in consultation with our Parochial Committee confirmed the appointment of Fr. David Garrett as Assistant Priest at St. Peter s Cathedral beginning November 1, transitioning to Rector, St. Peter s Cathedral, and Priest-in-Charge of Georgetown Parish, beginning December 1. The Parochial Committee is very pleased that Fr. Garrett has agreed to join our St. Peter s family. Fr. Garrett was born in New Glasgow, NS and is a graduate of King s College Halifax, and Atlantic School of Theology. He has been Rector in several parishes within Nova Scotia over his 30-year career, most recently as Rector of Port Williams in Annapolis Valley. He has served as Archdeacon in the Annapolis Valley area for the past three years. We look forward to welcoming Fr. David Garrett to St. Peter s! WHAT IS OUTREACH AT ST. PETER S? Outreach can be defined as helping others outside of your immediate community, and at St. Peter s outreach happens in many forms. The Parish Life Committee would like to highlight some of the many forms of outreach at St. Peter s. For some of you, outreach is something you do without even thinking of it, while some forms of outreach involve significant time and effort. Ultimately outreach comes down to The Golden Rule Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. A few St. Peter s examples include: > Donations of food are made to the food bank at the back of the church. > A church concert/play is organized and advertized so that all may enjoy. > Donations are collected in Easter folders and from the Bishop Binney Group for St. Monica s Orphanage in Jamaica. > Parish members go to Montague to assist with their services. > Hotel toiletries are collected at the back of the church for residents of Hillsborough Hospital. > Donations are collected for Farmers Helping Farmers. > Parishioners answer the call for community volunteers as mentioned in the Bulletin. > Meals are prepared at Holy Week for the community ecumenical services. > The Rector weekly assists those who come to him in need. > St. Peter Publications, out of our parish office, produces and distributes numerous publications world-wide. > Various Anglican missions are supported by the parish. > Christian education sessions are run and made available to the greater community. In addition to this many, many parishioners volunteer with charities, with youth, with the elderly, in hospitals, etc. in our community. In future bulletins The Parish Life Committee would like to highlight areas where outreach volunteers are needed. Some forms of outreach involve giving of your time, others of your talents while others request a donation of treasures. With Christ as our example, we are all called to serve others. Making a living is about getting, making a life is about giving.
