We will start dinner at 6:00pm, followed by our Friday night service and Chanukah party. How about asking a friend to join us for this traditional community event? Chanukah 2014 A beautiful evening with a pot-luck dinner, service, song and sharing of menorahs. Voting Matters! Annual Meeting Sunday December 6, 2015 Our annual congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, December 6, at 4:30pm. You will soon receive a mailing with a list of the proposed officers and board of trustee members for 2016, plus the proposed budget for next year. We need your vote on both items in order to meet the annual requirements for our non-profit status. The meeting will address the successful synagogue addition and our need for increased operating funds for our full-time rabbi and our new cantorial soloist. As you hopefully have seen, we recently completed the exciting synagogue addition project. Thank you so very much to the many of you who donated most generously! Please plan on attending the meeting to get even more information. Or, you may send in your proxy when you receive it. Alternately, you can use the proxy included here on page 6. 2 RABBI s message As the afternoon light wanes and the days become shorter, we begin thinking about turkey day and of course, Chanukah. Yes, Chanukah is a month away (first night candle is December 6th) but the message of Chanukah resonates in our minds as we survey the chaotic world we live in. From our tradition we read of the battle for freedom waged by the Maccabees around 168 BCE. This text from the Maccabees is a story that was placed in the extra-canonical literary books, known as the Apocrypha. Why was Chanukah left out of the Hebrew Bible? The Sages, I believe, were afraid of glorifying the military prowess of Judah the Maccabee and his followers. The cruse of oil, which symbolizes the purification of the Temple in Jerusalem, seemed a more appropriate symbol to celebrate. Thus the Chanukah menorah became one of the crucial metaphors for this holiday. Chanukah echoes our desire for religious freedom, an idea we often take for granted in America. But religious freedom is constantly being tested by organizations who wish to impose their signature on our civil society. I remember the numerous discussions I engaged in, vis-à-vis the teaching of Chanukah in the public schools of Houston. Even though we tout the separation of church and state, Christmas was always glorified in the public schools, and our Jewish children suffered. After many meetings with the school board, a Chanukah curriculum was included in the Kingwood public school system. Such realities still remain unresolved in our public school curriculum in Santa Fe. Chanukah reminds us that military victories are short lived. While Judah was victorious in his day, his battle for religious freedom did not end on the hills of ancient Tel Aviv. Less than a decade later, Judah fell in battle and our religious freedom was usurped by the Syrian, Antiochus. We survived, not because of fighting, but by adapting. We are a flexible people and we know how to surmount adversity. During the Roman period, Jews began to cultivate new ways of re-invigorating their religious practices. We do the same in our United States yet we must constantly remind ourselves and our neighbors that our holiday is not the Jewish take on Christmas. It is about dedicating ourselves to our faith, our educational system, and our allegiance to the ineffable, the Holy One. This coming December, make Chanukah a more festive time in your homes and with your friends and family. Learn Chanukah songs, talk about the Maccabees, and think of the modern exemplars of those freedom fighters. Join us at the synagogue on Friday, December 11th for a wonderful Chanukah dinner and evening of song and prayer. The greatness we enjoy at Chanukah is not about size or quantity(of presents). Each of us determines his/ her own greatness; our very souls are indispensable to our families and the Almighty. May all of us be blessed with a healthy Chanukah week. Hag sameach, Rabbi Martin W. Levy

3 president s message It Was A Very Good Year Three, in Fact This edition of the Bulletin marks the end of my three years of service as your president. This experience has been quite challenging. Many of you have been wonderfully supportive. This includes board members and those who filled my chopped liver cabinet. Without question Gail has been there when I needed her. Rabbi was always helpful. I enjoyed working with both of them. I was fortunate to be in this chair when major events occurred. The Gould foundation gift has enabled us to be where we are today...in a new wing with a full time Rabbi. The congregation constructed the original building without benefit of a mortgage and our congregation constructed the new addition without need of a mortgage. Rabbi Helman was generous enough to have left us a significant gift for use by the congregation as it sees fit. Going forward our membership will continue to grow. Many of you participate in our Shabbat services. You are enthusiastic and enjoy not only Rabbi s Dvar Torah messages and sermons but there is a great deal of musical enjoyment led by Cantorial Soloists Ephriam Herrera and Norton Bicoll. We are always busy. We now have a CBT Woman s Group. We are a very food-oriented group pot luck meals, onegs, and seder. You name it, we ll put food to it. The 92nd Street Y events, brought to you live via DVD, include a bagels & lox brunch when the showing occurs on Sundays. We ve participated as co-sponsors with the Council on International Affairs. We look forward to other programs. This has been a great three years. I am pleased to have been a part of CBT as President. I look forward to my continued involvement in and with CBT. 10 Oneg Tips: Something for Everyone I have been asked on occasion, what should I bring for my oneg? As the sages would ponder, and pronounce something for everyone. In general, I suggest a sweet item, a savory item, and fillers as they see fit. These could be cheeses, fruits, or deviled eggs are always a popular item. It is not necessary to make the items you choose for the table. Santa Fe is blessed with so many places that make beautiful food of all descriptions. Flowers are optional, but please no lilies. We have lots of vases available if you are bringing cut flowers or a plant is fine also. Our Congregation keeps gluten-free sweets and savory crackers. We also provide juices, coffee and tea. We have trays, serving utensils, paper goods, a microwave, as well as a toaster oven and a traditional oven if needed. We were gifted with an ice maker, too. Unless there is a special request, the table will be prepared for the oneg, along with the hot and cold drinks. One should plan on arriving at about 7:00pm. If there is a special issue, I am glad to help connect the provider with the officer who will be opening and closing that evening. In general, the family providing the oneg will help to clean up what is left, deciding what might go home with them or someone else, as well as general kitchen clean up. If you choose to sponsor an oneg, please let me know, and I will work with you on what you want to have on the table. The cost, at this time, is $50, payable to Congregation Beit Tikva. If you have not filled out your membership packet, including the form for your first and alternative dates, please do so as soon as possible. As the year winds down and suddenly a new one starts, we often find ourselves really stretching to fill Shabbat dates. I hope this has been helpful, and will encourage members to participate in a special time on Shabbat to share food and friendship and to increase our understanding of each other.
