2 RABBI s message Often I am asked, why is Chanukah so early this year, or why will Chanukah be so late this year? My considered response is to reassure our congregants, for Chanukah will be exactly on time this season, beginning precisely the night of the 25th of Kislev. We have been celebrating that day for more than 2,000 years, so I guess we re still on time! This Thanksgiving we happen to be celebrating Chanukah, due to the unusual early nature of the High Holidays, and the intricacies of the lunar calendar. But still, we are right on Jewish time! After we recite the Chanukah blessings, which accompany the lighting of candles, we add a prayer which contains an unusual sentence, These candles are sacred and we are not permitted to put them to any use we may only look upon them. Such a striking idea we cannot use these lights for any practical purpose! We can t read by it, nor have a meal by them, nor use them to kindle the Shabbat lights. And we need a shamash, a worker candle, to light each of the Chanukah candles. How terribly non-practical this is. In our world efficiency and success are measured by pragmatism, and the utilitarian value of every action or effort expended. Yet our Tradition tells us that Chanukah lights are not to be used for anything; they are just to be admired. Makes sense to me! How pragmatic were the Maccabees, who fought against the assimilationist powers of the Roman Empire around 168 BCE? The Maccabees counseled their people: resist and cast off the yoke of Hellenism and assimilation. Others said, why resist the dreamstime.com Syrians, who are the proud bearers of the Greek culture, whose army is ready to destroy any Jewish desire for political freedom? The Syrians were the wave of the future, the symbol of modernity. For many Jews, being a good citizen in the second century BCE meant dressing like a Greek, participating in the gymnasium, adopting Greek names, neglecting Jewish holidays, and following a Greco- Roman education. Fortunately for us, the Maccabees expressed their own brand of impracticality. Their patriarch Mattathias declared, Though all the heathen within the bounds of the royal domain obey him (Antiochus Epiphanes, the Syrian dictator) and each one forsakes the worship of his fathers...yet will I, my sons and my family walk in the covenant of our fathers. Our success today is in large measure thanks to the impracticality and courage of countless generations who sacrificed and endured extreme hardships in order to uphold their Jewish traditions. To place a Chanukah menorah at one s window in the Middle Ages symbolized courage, for too many were attacked for this basic example of religious observance. A streak of impracticality runs through much of our Jewish thinking and attitude about caring for others. We espouse the unique idea of Torah Lishmah, which means studying Torah (and all of Jewish texts) for its own sake. We are learning, not so as to increase our professional status or productivity, but simply for the mitzvah of learning Torah, of broadening our knowledge of our faith. If we pause for a moment, you and I could think of other impractical Jewish values like giving Tzedakah, or visiting the sick, or performing acts of kindness for strangers, etc. We might argue, why emphasize the constant doing of good deeds, when we could better strengthen our income and status? But Jewish thinking always embodied the notion of doing for the sake of doing that in our actions, we humanize ourselves and elevate the greater community. When you re celebrating and opening presents this month, think of how you and I can do more for the community and continue to act like those impractical Maccabees. Hag sameach, Martin W. Levy rabbimwlevy@yahoo.com 2
3 president s message 2013: Back to the Future The 92nd St Y program series has been and continues to be a very successful adult education series. The new member Shabbat service was held on January 11th. A potluck dinner emphasizing a Shabbat meal was the theme. We also hosted a group of students and staff from Hamline University from St. Paul, MN. On February 6th, Rabbi Levy was recognized as the Clergy Honoree of the Year by the Santa Fe Club of Civitan International. Rabbi Levy kicked off the year with the adult study class Torah Stories Through the Eyes of the Kabbalah. This first class on January 23rd focused on Joseph and his brothers. The Megillah was read on Friday, February 22nd. Several members were appropriately costumed replete with gragger noise makers. Hammantashen capped off the Purim service at the Oneg. Our second potluck of the year was held on Friday, March 1st at Shabbat Across America. The first of what was expected to be an annual Yom Limmud: Day of Learning in Santa Fe was held on March 10th. A large contingent of participants representing CBT and other members of the Santa Fe Jewish community were present. Congregation Beit Tikva s annual Second Night Passover Seder was held at the synagogue this year on Tuesday, March 26. The social hall was filled to overflowing. On Saturday, April 6th we welcomed Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico performed Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps. An overflow crowd throughly enjoyed the performance presented in honor of Yom Hashoah. We actively participated with the Santa Fe Solace Treatment Center with their Teddy Bear Project for Abused Children in March and April. Yom Hazikaron & Yom Ha atzmaut were celebrated together at a dessert get-together to celebrate our Israeli soldiers and the 65th anniversary of the founding of Israel on Monday, April 15th. A dairy/vegetarian pot luck meal greeted this year s celebration of Shavuot on May 14th. June 6th marked the passing of our Founding Rabbi Leonard Helman. Not everything during 2013 was happy and upbeat. We lost a dozen members during this year. Truly a sorrowful series of events. We held a musical Tribute to Jewish-American Songwriters by The Bert Dalton Trio on July 27th. Sukkot was celebrated on September 20th followed by Simchat Torah on the 27th. Rabbi introduced weekly Torah study on Saturday, September 21st. You brought bags and bags of groceries at Yom Kippur which were donated to Food for Santa Fe, Inc. We shared our building with the Santa Fe Chapter of Hadassah for a luncheon and mahjong. And then there are bricks. We have three dedicated areas for our bricks. Our first, and largest, the Chai Walk. Members and non members of CBT have sought to honor friends and family by this beautiful addition on the North side of the building. We also have the Cantor Michael Linder area celebrating his 75th birthday and the Rabbi Leonard A. Helman memorial walk. Several months ago we became the recipients of a most generous gift from the Alan Gould Charitable Remainder Unitrust. Alan was a founding member of Beit Tikva who has now given $243,000 to use as we see fit. I formed an Advisory Committee to provide wisdom and guidance to me and the Board on the most appropriate ways to maximize this gift. The Committee, as well as the Board, proposed we ask Rabbi Levy to assume a full-time relationship with CBT. Further, we should add an Administrative Wing which will house the Rabbi s Study, a library-board-meetingclassroom, administrative space and enhanced storage. We are blessed with donors who have chosen to contribute to the building fund. This fund contained $134,000 entering the 4th quarter. We have since received $20,000 from Jan & Howard Hendler for building fund purposes and, in mid October, Nora Segal generously donated $50,000 toward the proposed Rabbi s Study. This $200,000 sum is estimated to cover the costs of this building project. The Gould fund exists as the beginning of a endowment whose purpose should include long-term clergy needs. In the immediate term, a portion of this fund will have to be used as a safety net backing up shortfalls in income. A full time Rabbi represents our hope and expectation of drawing new members to our family. Let s be realistic. Rabbi Levy has brought with him over 30 years of rabbinic experience. He is a known entity to us and must be compensated accordingly. Our challenge is to assure a steady stream of funds to fulfill our obligations. I appointed a committee to negotiate with the Rabbi on a new three year contract. Their recommendation was reviewed by the Board and approved for submission to the Membership. continued on page 5 3
4 Autumn Leaves Fundraiser, October 2013 When Autumn Leaves began to fall on Saturday, October 19th the piano playing of David Geist began to soar. A wonderful time was had by all. The evening started off with dinner at Phil Goldstone & Heidi Hahn s, Barbara Cohen & Al Chapman s, Ned Siegel s, and Sharon & Ed Sorken s homes. Ready in the wings for additional dinners was Bobbi Goodrich & Marty Hoffman and Lisa & Louis Sinoff. My sincere thanks and appreciation to our host s and hostesses. Meanwhile, back at the synagogue the desserts were assembled on 3-tier serving trays. The only thing missing was the chocolate fountain. Julian Marquez of Swiss Bakery & Pastry Shop provided a wonderful selection of miniature pastry s as did Juli Horowitz Kite and Ron Kite. Bringing the gluten free selection of tasty tidbits was Revolution Bakery. There was no shortage of sweets. A big thank you to Louis Sinoff for making all the arrangements with David Geist and running the sound board for David and our enthusiastic singing participants. A huge thank you to our members who volunteered to sing, they were Al Chapman, Peter Merrill and Rita & Cantor Michael Linder. Finally our own, very talented graphic designer, Paula Eastwood, who just happens to be a professional singer, amazed us with her beautiful jazz voice. Pressed into service when she arrived, Kaycee Canter singlehandedly sold $600 in raffle tickets in less than two hours. Great job! A special thank you to Lisa Sinoff, the 50/50 raffle winner, who generously donated back her $300 winnings. Armon LaMont and your s truly, did a great job setting up tables and chairs then resetting the chairs and returning the tables to the shed. Barbara Cohen who coordinated all the dinners and Barb LaMont who was in charge of all the details, thank you for all your work in this successful evening. You did good. Jerry Bork Recently a local newspaper ad began with the statement, We are Faith Leaders, and we support the freedom to marry in New Mexico. Unfortunately, Rabbi Levy s name was not included in the list because he was never contacted by the organization which sponsored the advertisement. Our Rabbi has always been a strong advocate of the right of all citizens to marry, and an advocate for LGBT rights. He has spoken about his support for gay/lesbian rights from the pulpit on many occasions. Other well-known local clergy were omitted from this newspaper ad as well. If you have further thoughts on the subject for Rabbi Levy, please contact him via phone or . Congratulations to Jody Ellis and Marcia Muth on their recent wedding, August 27, Mazel Tov to Two Santa Fe Living Treasures Chanukah Blessings Candles are added to the Chanukiyah from right to left but are kindled from left to right. The newest candle is lit first. (On the Shabbat of Hanukkah, kindle the Hanukkah lights first and then the Shabbat candles.) Light the Shamash the helper candle first, using it to kindle the rest of the Hanukkah lights; say or sing: Hebrew Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, asher kid shanu b mitzvotav v tsivanu l hadlik ner shel Chanukah. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the Hanukkah lights. Hebrew Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, she-asah nisim laavoteinu v imoteinu bayamim hahaeim baz man hazeh. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who performed wonderous deeds for our ancestors in days of old at this season. For first night only: Shehecheyanu Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, shehecheyanu v kiy manu v higianu laz man hazeh. Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, for giving us life, for sustaining us, and for enabling us to reach this season. 4
5 president s message continued from page 3 Many of you have come from other parts of the country where Temple dues are considerably higher than at CBT. The Board understands the need for dues to provide at least 65% in total income. It is not in our best interest to exhaust the Gould Fund. We have current needs and long-term needs. The Board projects our dues income increase to be 25%. This, in and of itself, will not fulfill all our income needs. We estimate having to use approximately 7% from the Gould Fund. Further, we still rely on bulletin listed donations of at least $17,500, High Holiday ticket sales of $6,500 and general fund-raising of $23,000. We ve had a very busy year. Many wonderful activities within our congregation and within our community at large. And I haven t mentioned our most important activity: Shabbat services bring inner peace and a time to reflect on our lives of the previous week; Shabbat services allows us an opportunity to meet and greet friends, visitors, and prospective members. Those of you who choose not to attend are shortchanging yourselves of a truly wonderful experience. You miss welcoming Shabbat, Rabbi s teaching, Cantor Linder leading our enthusiastic singing congregants and my weekly announcements. Our annual membership meeting is Sunday, December 15th. Cast your vote to elect new officers and trustees, approve Rabbi Levy s contract, approve our budget and dues request, and building addition. Please vote for growth and involvement. CBT is sponsoring a twelve day tour of the great sites of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and the Galilee. We will embark for the land of the Prophets on May 20th, 2014, arriving in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, the 21st. The tour features seven nights in Jerusalem at one of the city s five star hotels. Our tour will be led by Yossi Dagan, one of Israel s most respected and experienced guides. Our journey concludes on Sunday, June 1st. The approximate cost for the eleven days in Israel is $3,500 per person, with a surcharge for single accomodations. The air travel is an additional charge, subject to one s departure city. As this article is written with a general itinerary, we hope to have our final itinerary and hotel reservations completed within the next ten days. In preparation for this exciting tour of our ancient homeland, Rabbi Levy will lead a class in the spring to prepare us for the notable sites, the history and the language of modern Israel. Jeffrey and Joan Less have graciously offered to serve as liaisons for our Israel trip, so please contact them for further details. Our travels begin as we land at Ben Gurion airport, and transfer to the Carlton Hotel in Tel Aviv. We will walk the ocean front promenade and dine together for our first meal in the land of Israel. Day 2 we travel to Caesarea, Haifa and Akko. In Caesarea we ll see the Roman theater, the aqueduct and other excavations. Driving to Haifa, we ascend Mt. Carmel to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Bahai Gardens. We will return to Tel Aviv for dinner with an Israeli friend, who are supporters of our congregation. Friday May 23rd we tour Tel Aviv, stopping at Rabin Square, Old Jaffa, the artists quarter, and Neve Tzedek, and the Museum of the Diaspora. We travel to Jerusalem for our first Shabbat in Israel. Shabbat in Jerusalem includes a walking tour and a visit to the Israeli Museum, one of the outstanding art collections in the world. We dine together on Saturday night, possibly taking in a theater performance that night. Sunday in the City of Gold we drive to Mt. Scopus, and then head for the Old City, walking through the Cardo and Armenian quarter until we reach the Western Wall. We conclude our day with a visit to the David s Tower Museum. On Monday, May 26th, we visit Yad Vashem and the Children s Pavilion. We also will tour the Knesset and the Shrine of the Book, home of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The remainder of our time in Jerusalem will see us at the Hadassah hospital and touring the rabbinical tunnels of the Old City, one of the major archeological sites, many levels below the modern city. On Wednesday May 28th we travel south to Masada and the Dead Sea region. We ll stop at Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. We ascend Masada via cable car. Driving to Ein Gedi, we ll enjoy the famous springs, an important biblical site in Israel s history. Thursday May 29th we drive north through the Galilee to Safed, the ancient mystical city, home of a vibrant Israeli art center. We ll see the ancient synagogues and the home of the Kabbalists, who brought mysticism to the forefront in the late 1500 s. From that vantage point, we will visit noted military monuments that shaped the future of Israel during the War of Independence. Overnight we spend at a beautiful kibbutz. Our tenth day in Israel we travel to Tiberias, Beit Shean, Beit Alpha and return to Jerusalem for a second Shabbat in the Golden City. We will pray at the Wall as we welcome the Sabbath. On Saturday we have a chance to visit one of Jerusalem s Reform synagogues, and return to the Cardo (the Jewish Quarter). Sunday June 1st we say shalom to Jerusalem and head for Tel Aviv where we ll visit a Yemenite family who are famous jewelers, and share final moments on the beach. Sunday night we board our flight back home, saying shalom Aleichem to our new found friends in Israel. For more details about this amazing journey contact Jeffrey Less or Rabbi Levy. 6
