1 Spring 2017 Oak Ridge News Dr. Ricky D. Turner, Senior Pastor 9301 Parallel Parkway Kansas City, Kansas Phone: (913) Website: Sunday Service: Sunday School 8:30 am Morning Worship 9:50 am Bible Study: Mid-day - 11:30 am Evening - 7:00 pm *THE CHURCH WHERE MEMBERS COME TO PARTICIPATE, NOT SPECTATE!* Pastor & Wife s 19 th Anniversary Celebration THEME : RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF PASTORS 1 THESSALONIANS 1:3 1 CORINTHIANS 15:2-4 Two special services in April celebrated Pastor Turner s 19 th year at Oak Ridge. A Pre-Appreciation service was held on April 2 nd. The service began with a moving tribute by Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Young. The Young s are newer members but remarked on the profound impact Pastor Turner has made on them in just a short time. Rev. Dr. Wallace Hartsfield was the special guest of the day. Dr. Hartsfield is a renowned pastor from Kansas City Missouri and a frequent guest at Oak Ridge. The next Sunday, April 9 th, Pastor s Appreciation service was in full swing. Guests from Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Oklahoma City and several members of Pastor Turner s family filled the church. Deacon and Deaconess McNeill kicked the service off with a fantastic tribute to Pastor Turner and First Lady Tinalisa. Greater Mt. Olive s brilliant choir kept the joyous atmosphere alive. Their performance was inspirational to say the least. Greater Mt. Olive s Pastor Ray Douglas gave an uplifting message that ensured the congregation recognized the importance of Pastor Turner s contributions to Oak Ridge and the community for the past 19 years.
2 OAK RIDGE NEWS SPRING 2017 APRIL S p Special Events Purpose: Brother Robert Lynn Elijah, a member of Friendship Baptist Church, was blessed with a vision to contribute to his community in a fun and competitive way that would involve multiple churches competing in a basketball tournament called Hoops for the Hungry. The purpose of the basketball tournament was to raise awareness of hunger in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The tournament allowed participants and spectators to donate canned goods to help decrease the starvation rate during the winter season. 3 OAK RIDGE NEWS SPRING 2017 Pastor & Wife s 19th Anniversary TRIBUTES My wife and I were looking for a wise, business minded, honest, down to earth, sincere, passionate man of God and we found that in Pastor Turner. Pastor Turner s words and actions consistently show that he is not looking for the celebrity, credit or praise, but instead to guide and teach us. He is a servant of God and a servant leader for us all. At the same time, we have found that the members of Oak Ridge are a true reflection of Pastor Turner s leadership, that this congregation follows his lead and make this a true church home where any willing man, woman, child or family can grow and contribute. This was immediately evident to my wife and I, as we continued to say Sunday after Sunday, how we could feel a genuine sense of love and compassion at Oak Ridge. Leadership is key in all that we do and we sincerely appreciate Pastor Turner and First Lady Tina Lisa s open arms and the way that we have been welcomed into the Oak Ridge Family. Sincere thanks from Brother and Sister Young. Special thanks to Brother Solomon and Sis Shahnaz Young and Deacon Coty and Deaconess McNeill for their beautiful heartfelt tributes. We would also like to acknowledge the Anniversary Committee Brother Reed and Sister Kimberly Partridge and Deacon Gregory and Deaconess Dianne Donnell for organizing a wonderful celebration for Pastor and Sister Turner. 3
4 OAK RIDGE NEWS SPRING TRIBUTES Pastor Turner has allowed the Lord to use him as a vessel to advance the course of the Lord in this church. When Jesus told Peter in the later part of John 21:17 feed my sheep, He sent Pastor Turner to do that here at Oak Ridge. If you ve been attending our Bible study, we have been talking about gifts in 1 Corinthians 12. Our Pastor is definitely a gift to Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. His gifted preaching, teaching, and ministry reach the hearers of the Word which is us and he challenges us to be doers of the Word. Pastor Turner is an awesome man of GOD and a wonderful family man. He leads by example with a loving and compassionate heart. He preaches and teaches the infallible and unchallengeable Word of God with great passion. Pastor Turner is God's special angel that God handpicked to care for His people right here at Oak Ridge. It takes a special person to go out of his way and do the many things that he does for this church. All of us are grateful for our First Lady, Sis. TinaLisa Turner. She is an amazing woman of God. Sis. Turner is the icing on our Pastor s German Chocolate cake. She is the ultimate helpmate. This past year, our Pastor has been sick and our First Lady has been right there by his side. Our First Lady is a prayer warrior and Pastor s #1 Cheerleader. She is loving, warm, kind approachable. The women and children of Oak Ridge just gravitate to her. Sis. Turner is quick to give an encouraging word or to make one laugh. We all love our First Lady. She is a true worshipper. She is not just sitting there waiting to be served. She oversees and is involved in various ministries Minister s Wives, Young Women s Society and the Mission, just to name a few. I personally just love to hear her speak. 5 OAK RIDGE NEWS SPRING ANNIVERSARY PICTURES From the Pastor s Pen.. Rest for the Weary Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, For I am gentle and humble in heart, and you Will find rest for your souls" Matthew 11:29 NIV The idea that the pace of life seems to continually increase stress and worry is a universal concept. There seems to be no end to the demands on our time and energy. Are you tired of the rat race? There is a solution. It isn t one that offers escape from the demands of life, but one that guarantees rest in the midst of the rat race. Jesus said, Come unto me if you are tired and burden. I ll make your load lighter and help you carry your burden (Matthew 11:28, paraphrase). My friends, Jesus offers us rest amid the fast pace of life. Christ doesn t always take us out of life s demanding situation. Instead, He invites us to allow Him to help us handle the demands. He wants to face each day and each challenge with us. Walking with Jesus Christ daily and trusting Him for guidance and wisdom to handle whatever comes is the way to experience rest in the rat race. Your Servant in Christ, R.D. Turner
