MEET OUR 2015 RECREATION CAMP COUNSELORS Younger Group Staff (Pre K 2 nd Grade) MORGAN HERBORT ASSISTANT DIRECTOR I graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University where I received my B.S.in Ed. in early childhood education. This is my second year as Assistant Director for Recreation Sports. I attend Savannah Christian Church and my life verse is: II Corinthians 5:7, I will walk by faith, even when I cannot see. I not only teach at Calvary but coach High School softball. When I m not in the classroom, I m on the field or in the gym. I spend my time playing with my dog, Sadie, or with my family and friends. MICHELLE MEYERS SMELTZER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR I am a proud 1989 graduate of Calvary Day School. I received my B.S. Degree in Health and Physical Education from Armstrong State College and am one semester away from obtaining my Master s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I am so blessed during the school year to work as a pre-school teacher at Isle of Hope Methodist Church. The light of my life are my two children who also attend Calvary. Bryson Smeltzer is completing the 10 th grade and Tynley Smeltzer is completing the 6 th grade. My favorite hobbies include watching my children in many different sports activities including baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and guiding them to becoming young Christians making a difference in this world. Children are our future and I value every moment spent with them. My favorite Bible verse is Jerimiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. JAMIE COATES I am a graduate of Calvary Day School and a senior at Mercer University where I am majoring in Chemical Commerce. In my spare time, I like to read, volunteer, and spend time with my family. I have worked with Calvary s kids for six years, through both the Daycare and Summer Camp Programs, and am looking forward to making the summer with your kids the best one yet! My favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 40:30 But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint. Our God is a God of hope a God of strength. This verse is my favorite because it serve as a reminder that He strengthens those who choose to live in humble dependence on Him. ASHLEY POOLE I graduated from Calvary Day School in I am currently attending Brewton Parker College where I am majoring in Music Worship Leadership. I attend Calvary Baptist Church where I am very active in the music program as well as the youth group. My life verse is Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. I have spent the last couple of summers working with children at camps or daycare. When I am not at school, I love singing, playing with small children, going to the beach, and hanging out with friends.
BRITTANY MEELER I m an Athens native that loves the Georgia Bulldogs. Currently, I m studying Early Childhood Education at Armstrong State. I m a member of The Church at Southside. I enjoy a good book with a cup of coffee on the side. I played softball, basketball, and tennis in high school. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my friends and staying active. Ephesians 2:10 is one of my favorite verses: For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (NIV) TAYLOR THOMAS I graduated from Calvary Day School in I now attend Georgia Southern University. I have two sisters and a brother that attend Calvary. I am very involved in my church and spend most of my time with my family. Kids are my passion and I love working with them. My favorite verse is Isaiah 41:10: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. SARAH HAMILTON My name is Sarah Hamilton. I am currently a sophomore at Georgia Southern University. I plan to major in Early Childhood Education. I graduated from Calvary in 2013 and am a member of Calvary Baptist Temple. In my spare time, I enjoy my friends and family. My favorite bible verse is John 4:1-3, Let not your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in Me. In my father s house there are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. For where I am, you may be also. I like this verse because it reminds me that there is a special place in heaven for us if we believe in Him. CHELSEA BELL I was born and raised in Savannah and currently attend Armstrong State University. I am an early childhood education major and very close to achieving my goal of becoming an elementary school teacher! Aside from that, I enjoy dancing, doing crafty kind of things, and spending time with family and friends. My favorite bible verse is Galatians 1:10: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I still trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people I would not be a servant of Christ." I love it because everyone will not always approve of you, even when you're doing your best, but ultimately it is not up to anyone but God. It also applies when workings with kids, because they're not always going to be happy with you or the consequences you give them! Over the years I've learned that it is not about being liked, it is about doing what God wants you to do, no matter what, and this verse affirms that.
SAVANNA ALBRECHT My name is Savanna Albrecht and I am a freshman at Kennesaw State University. I graduated from Calvary Day School in I am employed by Lewis Elementary School as an After School Program Instructor. Spending time with friends, going to the beach, and watching sports are my favorite pastimes. I am very involved with a campus ministry at Kennesaw and live by Exodus 14:14, The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still. This verse is a constant reminder that God is a warrior and I m important enough for him to fight for me. KIRSTEN BLOCKER I'm a Savannah local and grew up going to Calvary for school and church. I'm currently a 6th grade math teacher in Chatham County. I enjoy cooking, singing, going on vacation, and spending time with my husband, Adam, and our dog, Jax. My favorite bible verse is Phil. 4:4 "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!" It reminds me that the Lord is always to be praised, in good times and bad. KAMERON FOUNTAIN I am currently a freshman at Georgia Southern University majoring in Psychology with a minor in Child and Family Development. After obtaining my bachelor's degree, I plan to get a Masters in Speech Pathology to become a Speech Therapist at an elementary school or in the medical field. I am an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and attend church in Statesboro at Connections Church. I have a passion for working with children and have previously had the opportunity to work at Calvary Day Care while in high school. My favorite bible verse would have to be Psalm 19:1- "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." This verse stands out to me because it shows that even in the midst of hard times and struggle, we can look all around us to find that God is ever present. The beauty of his creation shows how powerful and in control he really is. TAYLOR BROWN I am a 2013 graduate of Calvary Day School. I am finishing my sophomore year at Young Harris College where I study art and psychology in hopes of becoming an art teacher or art therapist. I have six years of experience working with kids through programs like Vacation Bible School and Immanuel Baptist Church s Music Camp and every year has been more rewarding than the last. I have always loved being around children because they are so creative and free which is so inspiring. I cannot wait to see what amazing things we can make and discover this summer! The verse that has been speaking to me recently is Isaiah 40:31, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
CALLIE SMITH I am a 2013 Calvary graduate that participated in volleyball, basketball, soccer, and cross country. I also played club soccer with Savannah Celtic (currently Savannah United). I current attend Brewton-Parker College with a double major in Health and Wellness Management/English. I participate in Baptist Collegiate Ministry on campus and in Savannah volunteer at the Oatland Island Wildlife Center. This will be my 4 th summer working for the Calvary Recreation Camp. I enjoy reading, painting, playing with my two dogs, and participating in any sport possible! My favorite verse is Isaiah 43:18, Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. As humans, we tend to dwell on our mistakes and the consequences they may bring. I know I do this far too much. In this dwelling, we tend to forget the mercy that we have in our lives. Christ died for once and all time; for our sins past, present, and future; and for ALL people. While we should never use this as an excuse to do wrong on purpose, it is a constant reminder of the love our Heavenly Father has. He is always there to pick us up when we fall. Face it; we are going to mess up majorly in life almost every day. But you know what? It's okay! As long as we try our very best each day to do our Father's will, our Father is always there to pick us up, dust us off, and love us all the same. MCKENZIE REID I grew up in Effingham County and graduated from South Effingham High School. I am now a junior at Armstrong State University where I am pursuing a degree in nursing. I enjoy spending time with my husband, Alex, and going to the park with my bulldog, Mello. I also enjoy working with children at my church and in the community. My favorite verse is Ephesians 5:24, Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. This verse is a daily reminder that Christ should be at the center of my life and my marriage. Older Group Staff (3 rd 8 th Grade) ELI DILLARD ASSISTANT DIRECTOR I have been with the Calvary family for two years. Apart from being a Summer Camp counselor, I teach high school English, coach softball, and run the Upper School newspaper. I received my undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia and my graduate degree in Creative Writing from the University of Baltimore. I enjoy reading, photography, traveling, playing tennis, running with my dog, and coffee. I am encouraged by encouraged by the verse 2 Timothy 1:7, For God did not give us a soul of timidity, but of love, power and discipline. LAURA CARR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR I graduated from Brewton-Parker College in May of 2013 with a degree in Psychology. I am currently employed at Calvary Baptist Temple as Director of Preschool Ministry. I am also involved with the School s After School Care Program. I am married to John Carr, a teacher and coach at Calvary. I worked at Calvary Summer Camp last year and am really looking forward to a great 2015 summer! My favorite Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. This verse holds God s promise that even though we are tempted by all the sins of this world, God has not left us to deal with them on our own. Even with our sin nature, He is always there!
ASHLEIGH HENSLEY I attended Calvary Day School from age two and graduated in I am now studying at Savannah Technical College to earn a degree in Dental Hygiene. I love spending time with kids and teaching them to play sports. My favorite verse would have to be Philippians 2:3: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. (NIV) The verse talks about how we need to have the mind of Christ who humbled himself to the cross. MAGGIE GRIFFIN I am currently a student at Armstrong State University. I spend my afternoons working at Calvary s After School Program and I m also a part-time nanny. One of my passions in life is working with children and helping them grow into the best persons they can be. One of my favorite bible verses is Isaiah 43:2 "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." I like this verse because it is saying He is always with us through every aspect of life and we should never doubt or be fearful. CAROLINE BURK I graduated from Calvary Day School in 2012 and currently attend Armstrong State University. I have had a basketball in my hand since I was two and played in many sports while I was in school. It was this passion that led me to major in Health and Physical Education. I enjoy spending time playing tennis and basketball and spending time with family and friends. I am an active member of St. George's Episcopal Church. I look forward to passing down what I have learned to younger kids becoming involved in sports. My favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." I like this verse because it tells me God has a specific plan for me. A plan to give me the best future possible. WHITNEY MOCK I will be entering my second year as a counselor at Calvary Summer Recreation Camp. I graduated in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology: Counseling and Human Development from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. While at Liberty, I spent 3 years on the cheerleading team. I m pursuing a career in school guidance counseling, and currently working on my Master's of Education in School Counseling from Liberty University. My family and I are members of Calvary Baptist Temple. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, volunteering with the youth at church, reading, working out, and painting. My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. I love this verse because it reminds me that no matter what is going on in life, we can hold on to the promise that God never ceases to be good to us and sovereign over all things. We may not always know the purpose behind certain situations, but we can always trust that God is faithfully using those situations to make us more like His Son, Jesus Christ.
ALEX REID I am a 2011 graduate of Calvary Day School, and I graduated May, 2015 from Georgia College and State University with a B.S. in Mathematics. At Georgia College, I was a member of the men s basketball team all four years. On December 29, 2013, I married Mckenzie in Savannah. I enjoy spending time with my wife and our dog Mello, playing golf, and teaching Sunday school at our church. My favorite verse is 2 Corinthians 5:21, For our sake He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. This verse resonates with me because it summarizes the great exchange Jesus makes for us on our behalf. JOHN CARR I graduated from Calvary Day School in 2010 and received my B.A. in History from Brewton-Parker College in I played baseball from childhood through college and love participating in, and watching, sports of all kinds. I teach and coach at Calvary Day School and attend Calvary Baptist Temple where my wife, Laura, serves as the Director of Preschool Ministries. I m motivated by Luke 9:23, And He said to all, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. MASON GRIFFIN I am entering my second year as a counselor at Calvary Summer Recreation Camp. I am a 2013 graduate of Calvary Day School. During my time at Calvary, I ve participated in baseball, football, and cross-country. Currently, I am enrolled at Kennesaw State University where I am pursuing a degree in Criminology. During my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and going to the gym. I attend North Metro church in Marietta, Georgia. My favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 41:10, So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. This is my favorite verse because it gives me a constant reminder that there is nothing in this world to fear because God is greater than any struggle that we may face. CORBIN HOWARD I love working with kids and have a passion for almost all sports, especially with children! I've worked numerous sports camps/day cares/bible camps throughout my entire life. I enjoy playing music and can play piano, guitar, and bass guitar. I play in praise bands for church and school. My favorite Bible verses are found in Titus 2:7-8. They read, "(7)And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. (8) Teach the truth so that your teaching can't be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us." These are my favorite verses because they lay things out so clearly. If we live as Christ would have us to, then our enemies can say nothing bad about us or be able to hold anything against us. This is a tall order and can be hard to live by at times, but this is our ultimate goal as Christians day in and day out.
MIKE MEDLIN This is my second year at Calvary Recreation Camp; I m currently working at Armstrong State University as the intramural graduate assistant as am pursuing my Master s Degree in Adult Education and Human Resources Development. I enjoy playing all sorts of sports in my spare time: basketball, flag football, as well as volunteering in other community projects. My favorite bible verse is Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This is my favorite because all things are possible and in reach as long as you keep your strength and belief in Christ no matter how tough your situation gets. DAN HATCH I am 19 years old and moved to Savannah in the summer of 2013 when my father landed a teaching job at Calvary Day School. I have since graduated from Calvary and am currently attending Armstrong State University. My interests include: singing, acting, and participating in almost any sport. I also thoroughly enjoy quoting movies and doing impressions so a voice, other than my own, may slip out once in a while. My favorite bible verse is Psalm 23:4 which says: Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. The first portion of this verse is what really hits me hard. It begins by painting a mental picture of depression and despair, but soon changes to uplifting reassurance, portraying God as our Shepherd and Guide. The passage provides a simple phrase that embodies the utmost faith in Jesus Chris: I will fear no evil. TREY CRANFORD I am from Warner Robins, Georgia and attend Brewton-Parker College where I am a junior majoring in History with a minor in Business. My hobbies include wrestling, finding adventure, and playing FIFA with friends. My favorite bible verse is Colossians 3:23 that says, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. Lunch Staff ALAN VANVLECK I became the Director of Food Services in 2010, after owning a Painting and Wallcovering business for over 25 years. I feel as though I was truly blessed with the opportunity to follow a life-long passion to work in food services when I was offered this position. One of my favorite bible verses is Colossians 3:23, Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. I am the parent of two Calvary graduates, Kristen, who graduated in 2004, and David, in I attend First Baptist Church of the Islands. What I enjoy most in life is spending time with my wife, children, granddaughter and extended family. AUSTIN MASTERS I am a 2013 graduate of Calvary Day School and a member of Calvary Baptist Temple. I attended Calvary Day School from kindergarten through 12th grade and participated in Calvary s Sports Camp for many times where I always had a great time! Currently, I am a student at Armstrong State University. I am also an assistant coach with the varsity baseball team at Calvary. My interests include coaching baseball and getting together with friends. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me". This verse is important to me because no matter how hard things in life may be, with Christ I can accomplish anything.
