There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. The presider welcomes the people to the service. PRESENTATION OF THE BAPTISMAL CANDIDATE Presenters Presenters Presenters The candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. We present Tristan William Joon Choi to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Parents and godparents, the Church receives Tristan with joy. Today we are trusting God for his growth in faith. 5 GLORIA Words: Edwin Le Grice ( ) Music: Judas Maccabeus, George Frederic Handel ( ) COLLECT OF THE DAY God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, enkindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please be seated. 5
Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. (61:10 62:3) I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand. GRADUAL HYMN Hymnal 115 6
Words: William Chatterton Dix ( ) Music: Greensleeves, English melody; harm. Christmas Carols New and Old,
HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. (1:1 18) Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me. ) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father s heart, who has made him known. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON The Rev. Canon Lisa Hackney-James Sub-Dean of the Cathedral 8

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER Praise God who made heaven and earth, who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. Leader Saving God, Give us life. We thank you that through the deep waters of death you brought your Son, and raised him to life in triumph. Leader Saving God, Give us life. Bless this water, that your servant Tristan, who is washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and in his resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Leader Saving God, Give us life. Send your Holy Spirit upon her, bring him to new birth in the household of faith and raise him with Christ to full and eternal life; for all might, majesty, authority and power are yours, now and for ever. Amen. BAPTISM The presider pours water over Tristan, saying Tristan William Joon, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O sisters too, how may we do for to preserve this day. This poor youngling, for whom we do sing, "By by, lully, lullay"? Herod the king, in his raging, charged he hath this day his men of might, in his own sight all young children to slay. That woe is me, poor child, for thee! And ever morn and day, for thy parting neither say nor sing, "By by, lully, lullay! 13
OFFERTORY HYMN Hymnal 112 Words: Christina Rossetti ( ) Music: Cranham, Gustav Theodore Holst ( ) 14
GREAT THANKSGIVING It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Hymnal S130 15

Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert ( ); arr. Richard Proulx ( ) We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. 17
