1 ALL SAINTS KESGRAVE NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO THOUGHT FOR THE DAY A Different Translation On November 10 th I attended a Study Day on the theme of Making a Difference and the opening worship included verses from Romans 12, which, by rather wonderful coincidence is also the bible chapter chosen by Robin for the 18 th November in our church. The twist here is that Bishop Mike had chosen to use The Message translation of the Bible in honour of Eugene Peterson (the author) who died on October 22 nd this year and the Message translation of Romans 12 certainly packs a punch: Here is an extract from the opening verses: So here s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead fix your attention on God. You ll be changed from the inside out. The word translation can mean to carry across or to remove from one place to another and that is fascinating from the point of view of reading and studying the Bible: Eugene s Message
2 took people to a different place, challenged their perception and understanding of words they might have read many times in more familiar translations, gave the readers a sort of shock: e.g. Ps 23: God my Shepherd! I don t need a thing! Something like 20 million copies of The Message have been sold so this priest, poet and author certainly has made a difference and continues to do so right up to the present time. Perhaps as we approach Advent and Christmas and words you have heard many, many times are read out in Church, you might like to try a different translation. 6 DON'T GET INTO DEBT THIS CHRISTMAS! Every Christmas many people over-reach themselves financially and end up in debt and despair as the New Year breaks. There is now an avalanche of advertisements on television urging people to borrow yet more when they find themselves in these difficulties, usually at exorbitant rates of interest. If your finances are out of control, please seek help: contact the StepChange Debt Charity at or Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Please speak to me if you want to know more about these organisations or need help in taking the first step. Sally Wainman CHURCH SURVEY What you think matters. Over the next 4 weeks we will be surveying our congregations to find out what you want from your church. We would encourage everyone of all ages to pick up a form from church and post back in the box provided. We have provided a copy of the questions below should you wish to your answers back to us. Thank you in advance for your time and support in taking part. What brings you to All Saints? What do you get from All Saints? What do you give to All Saints? What could make All Saints better? Any other comments or ideas welcome? We are hoping to be able to feed back our findings in January.
7 ONLINE PRESENCE A Church Near You/Facebook/Website. We want to ensure that everyone has the most up to date information of what is going on in our Church at all times and in the quickest convenient way possible for all concerned. We have been doing lots of work updating our online presence to assist with this. Please check out the above using the links found at the end of this newsletter and let us know what works best for you or how we could improve on any of these. THE ASK JOURNAL Dare I mention that I ve been feeling Christmassy for a couple of weeks now, ever since I made the family Christmas cake whilst singing along to Christmas carols?! I know that Christmas Day is still a few weeks off, but the season of Advent is fast approaching. The word Advent means coming and is the period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. It is a time of expectant waiting and preparation, as the church prepares to celebrate the birth of Jesus. During this Advent time, All Saints Church has a Posada travelling around the Parish. I spoke with Church Administrator Charlotte Markham, to find out more about this tradition. Posada is a Spanish word meaning inn, states Charlotte. Posada is an old Mexican tradition, where young people dressed as Mary and Joseph travelled from house to house in the weeks leading up to Christmas, asking for a room for the night and telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus. On Christmas Eve they would visit a local church to re-enact the nativity and place figures of Mary and Joseph in a crib. Our modern-day Posada involves the nativity figures of Mary, Joseph and the donkey journeying from house to house each night during Advent and gives each host within our Parish the chance to think about
8 the real meaning of Christmas, to pray together and to share the message with others. The Posada usually visits homes, Messy Church, Kiln Farm, local playgroups and schools. This year we re encouraging as many people as possible to become involved. When you receive the Posada you will also find a candle to light, prayer sheets, colouring sheets, the story of Christmas to read and share, and a journal, where you can write any thoughts or reflections of their time with you and what it means to you and your family to have them stay. If anyone is able to take any photos and upload them to our Facebook page that would be fantastic and will help us to share their journey with our wider community. If you would like to take part, then please sign up on the sheet at the back of church, or Charlotte Markham at cha.markham@btinternet.com with your name, address and telephone number. You will then be given a date for the night the Posada will visit, told who the Posada has come from and where it is to journey to next.
