1 June Pipings A Note from our Dean Dear Friends, Low Country Chapter Officers Chad Martin Dean cmartin2048@yahoo.com Debby Graves Sub Dean debbygraves@yahoo.com Gilbert G. Campbell Secretary gilonhhi@gmail.com Gary R. Rakestraw Treasurer grakestraw@hotmail.com Beth Corry (2017) Art Perry (2019) Members at Large Dr. JooSoo Son Director Placement & Substitutes mlmhsk@hotmail.com Chaplain Rev. Richard McDonnell moebird@live.com Chapter Web Site National AGO Web Site I can't believe it is already June! Please be sure to put the annual meeting at Gil's house on your calendar. We will discuss business regarding this past year and present information about the upcoming season. You can find details regarding what to bring, who to contact, etc in this month's newsletter as well. I hope many of you can attend. It will be fun to see new and familiar faces! The Lowcountry AGO has suffered the loss of a dear friend and colleague, John Marks. When I joined the chapter, I heard many great remarks of his musicianship, dedication, and personality. Please remember his family and friends during this emotional time. During the month of May, we enjoyed a wonderful noon recital on the 2nd Friday. It included works by great masters and was very well presented. The 2nd Friday Noon concerts will resume in September at the start of our 2017/2018 season. Our chapter also co-sponsored the silent movie "The General" with First Presbyterian on Hilton Head. There were between two and three hundred in attendance, and the evening was filled with a sing-a-long, slapstick comedy, and lots of organ improvisation. It was the perfect way to draw our 2016/2017 season to a close! The energy and dedication by our board is strong and positive. Having worked together in the uniqueness of this past season, we have grown to appreciate each other and support one another in AND out of board meetings. While composing my dean's note this month, what we do keeps running through my mind. We, as a chapter, are more than just musicians seeking quality music. We, as a chapter, have an opportunity to grow and appreciate each other and support one another in AND out of our monthly musical presentations. Since the summer is officially here, remember to stay cool, stay positive, and keep a song in your heart! See you all at Gil's! Your LCCAGO Dean, Chad A. Martin
2 A Note from our Sub-Dean May 19th between people were treated to a very enjoyable evening at 1st Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head. We watched the silent movie "THE GENERAL" with Buster Keaton while Chad Martin accompanied continuously for 1 1/2 hours. The music added just the right tone to the action that we were watching on the screen. There were many hilarious moments and the audience responded with pleasure and loud laughter. Thank You Chad for a job well done and a delightful evening. Our second Friday at noon concerts will be on vacation from June to August. They will resume in September. We will be featuring various venues this next year for the Friday concerts. Our ANNUAL MEETING will be hosted at the home of Gil and Marriett Campbell on June 19th at 6 PM. Gil is preparing his delicious chicken recipe and providing beverages. The Chapter will provide beer and wine. We will do the rest of the dinner by the alphabet. If your last name begins with: A-G Please bring a dessert H-N Please bring an appetizer O-Z Please bring a side dish or salad Please RSVP to the Campbell's as soon as possible. You need a pass to enter the plantation. Also indicate how many people will be coming in your party. gilonhhi@gmail.com Home Cell 88 South Port Royal Dr. HHI, SC We will also be handing out our program agenda for I hope to see you all there. Respectfully, Debby Graves Sub-Dean of the Low Country Chapter AGO

5 An invitation from Steven Branyon, Organist/Choirmaster of St. John s Church, Savannah, GA: I would especially like to remind you all of the Requiem to be held for the repose of the soul of John Marks, Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. John s Church, One West Macon St. (on Madison Square) in Savannah. If any of you wish to sing with the choir, we will meet in the St. John s choir room beginning at 12:30 to rehearse. The music is as follows: Psalm Davies (from Requiem) Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace - Wesley Come My Way, My Truth, My Life - Friedell Service: Willan Three hymns If you are not able to come sing with us, please know that you are especially invited to the service. It is not uncommon that we have been asked to play for a funeral (or wedding) in the past for someone we know very little of. In those cases, I have always tried to get to know something about the person(s) for whom I have been asked to play, and sometimes finding out information can be a challenge. John Marks moved to the Low Country after successfully serving church in the Baltimore and Washington DC areas. A series of events both traumatic and exciting eventually brought John and his wife Jennifer to St. John s in Savannah. In just a short time, John admitted that he found a wonderful church family in St. John s. I would invite you (not only as professional colleagues but as friends) to come and celebrate John s life by partaking the holy sacrament with John s wife Jennifer and her extended Family.
