1 V o l u m e 3, I s s u e 1 S C B C N e w s l e t t e r S e c o n d C a l v a r y B a p t i s t C h u r c h C o l u m b i a, S C I t s !!! N o w w h a t?? Another year is upon us!! Now what? What are you going to do different in 2017? The term New Year s Resolution gets thrown around so frivolously this time of year, and we all know the chances of us sticking to them are slim to none. So how can we do things differently this year, to actually help us stick to and achieve our goals? The new year is a perfect time to reflect on things of the past, to see how those things have shaped our lives, and how we can better our future. This time of year is also the perfect time to focus on your prayer life in addition to studying the bible more. These days, almost everyone has a smartphone or tablet at their disposal. That also means if you are like myself, your phone (or tablet or both) is with you almost every hour of the day. One Sunday our church hostess, Myrna Franklin, asked everyone who had a bible app downloaded to their phones to raise their hands. And guess what, the majority of the congregation raised their hands! So given that you have your phone with you at all times and that phone has a bible application downloaded to it, how often are you reading it? Be honest. Is it daily? Weekly? Or just when you are going through something? With technology as it is, we have every version of the bible available to us at a click of a button. Most bible applications also have various reading plans available that focus on a particular subject matter and has several scripture readings that correlate to that subject. In addition, many of these applications have references built into them that allow you to gain an even deeper understanding of a scripture. I have also found that many applications also have their own social media platforms built in that allow you to share scripture and discuss topics with others within that application. Over the next few months, Rev. Wells will discuss how to study the bible in addition to his sermon series on prayer. Included in this newsletter will be a study guide of sorts that breaks down how to read and understand scripture. I challenge all of us to utilize this tool to help to grow our understanding of the word, to help share our understanding with others, and grow in our spiritual journey with Christ.
2 A Prayer for the New Year: By: Deborah Ann Belka I pray that this New Year, will ring in God's peace I pray for a renewal of every heart that all hatred would cease. I pray for all the innocent, and for those who desire to kill I pray for a longing in every heart to come to know God's will. I pray for the helpless people, and for those who live in sin I pray for a hunger in every heart that will let Jesus live within. I pray for all who are hurting, and for those who cause the pain I pray for a thirst in every heart so Jesus in their lives can reign. I pray peace will ring in this year, and all hatred would truly end I pray for everyone to understand Jesus is their eternal friend.
