3 Speaking Pastorally By: Rev. John Collins Dear Friends, No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends ~ John 15:13 This past Monday, Memorial Day, I stood at the monument just across the driveway in our cemetery to conduct a brief ceremony of remembrance for veterans who gave their lives in service to our country. The monument had been placed just after World War I to remember four young men from Old Greenwich (then called Sound Beach) who had died in that conflict. In addition to the monument, four small oak trees were planted. Those trees now tower over this side of the cemetery. At the ceremony I spoke about two men. The first was a friend of mine from years ago whose name was Joseph McCann. Joe owned the florist in Pennsylvania where I worked as a teenager and one day he began to tell me about serving in the infantry in France during World War I. He told me the story of being separated from his unit and, while trying to get back, coming across a German soldier who was also lost. He said that holding their rifles at the ready, they simply looked at each other, nodded, and went their separate ways. He told me that his entire life had rested on that very delicate moment. But both young men, frightened and lost, acted from the deeper reaches of their humanity and allowed the other to live. The second man I spoke about was Captain Clifford Henry of Old Greenwich. I never knew him because he was mortally wounded in the Battle of St. Mihel in France in His family brought his body back home and his grave is marked by a large, rough-hewn stone at the end of the driveway on the Sound Beach Avenue side of our cemetery. I often pause by Clifford s grave on my way to the train station. The gravestone says that he graduated with honors from Harvard University and that he was 22 years old when he died. Each time I stand there I feel the tremendous futility and waste of war. This bright and accomplished young man s life was cut short by a senseless war, and all that he could have contributed to this world was lost. When I think about my friend Joe and when I stand in front of Clifford s grave, I feel deeply the crucial importance of the mission of our church. For almost 350 years this congregation has stood as a beacon of humanity and God s love to a world that desperately needs our message and our service. To raise children who in crucial moments will choose love over hate, and to raise awareness of the sacrifices made in the past so that we can enjoy lives of freedom and prosperity in the present, these are just two important ways that we live the message of Christ here at First Church. As this congregation opens an exciting new era of ministry, it is crucial to hear the echoes and wisdom of those long gone heroes upon whose shoulders we stand. John The Meetinghouse Monthly 3

We'll continue on with the story of David and the Psalms on June 1 and June 15 discussing this proto-christ figure and all his triumphs and failings. While we've just about run out of Psalms that are explicitly tied to certain scriptures there are others that specifically say, a Psalm of David, and we can learn from them because they are songs of hope, grounded not in wishful thinking or platitudes, but reality. In addition, we'll prepare for the fall series on the Parallel Gospels. Led by Rev. Dan England 4 The Meetinghouse Monthly

5 Report of the Senior Pastor Search Committee ith a sense of great joy and thanksgiving, the Senior Pastor Search Committee is pleased to W announce that we have an outstanding candidate, Rev. Richard S. DenUyl, Jr., to recommend as our next Senior Pastor. Most recently, Rev. DenUyl (pronounced den-isle ) served for 20 years as the Senior Pastor at The United Congregational Church of Little Compton in Rhode Island. Over the past 15 months, the Search Committee engaged in a search process beginning with the development of a Local Church Profile based on input gathered from the congregation. We conducted a national search utilizing UCC resources, as well as a targeted mailing campaign that included an informational brochure about First Church. Over many months, we reviewed approximately 50 Ministerial Profiles, listened to countless sermons, arranged telephone, Skype and in-person interviews (some two or three times) and carried out extensive reference checks. Throughout the process, we prayed for guidance to discern God s will for us in our search for new leadership. After an exhaustive (and exhausting!) process, and relying on God s grace, we unanimously selected Rev. DenUyl as our candidate to be the Senior Pastor of our church. Richard, age 56, was born in Arizona and grew up in Michigan. He earned his B.A. in business and religion at Hope College in Holland, MI and his Masters of Divinity at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. After seminary, Richard worked for several years as a psychological crisis counselor for three towns in the New Haven, CT area. He started his ministry at Westhampton Presbyterian Church, NY as a youth minister and then served at Norfield Congregational Church in Weston, CT as an Interim Associate Pastor before being called to be Senior Pastor at The United Congregational Church of Little Compton, RI in After leading the church in Little Compton for 20 years, Richard felt a call for a new challenge in a larger church. Rather than secretly looking for another position, he chose to notify his congregation of his desire and pastored them through his eventual departure in July After a post ministry sabbatical, he spent his time writing and searching for a new church. Richard met his wife, Barbara, at Hope College when they were students. She attended medical school at Northwestern University while he was at seminary and then did her residency at Yale. Currently, Barbara is a pediatrician with a practice in Massachusetts. She is looking forward to relocating here. Richard and Barbara have a daughter, Sophie, who just completed her freshman year at Barnard College in Manhattan. All three, Richard, Barbara and Sophie, enjoy running, skiing and sailing their boat, Grace, on local waters. Richard will bring many gifts to our church. He is a strong preacher, possesses a compassionate spirit and is known for his pastoral care for families in crisis and grief. During his years at Little Compton, he grew membership, increased stewardship, built the endowment, and led two capital campaigns to replace the church organ and refurbish all the church buildings. 6 Continued from previous page Report of the Senior Pastor Search Committee The congregation in Little Compton was quite diverse. Year-round members included local lobstermen, tugboat captains, college professors and a Supreme Court judge. The number of members swelled during the warmer months with seasonal visitors and retirees, many from the greater New York and Boston areas. While the demographics of the year-round and seasonal members were very different, their views were not: everyone we talked with loved their church, loved Richard and was moved by his sermons. We look forward to talking with you about our wonderful interactions with Richard. We hope you will make every effort to take advantage of the opportunities to meet Richard and Barbara in an informal setting over the weekend of June 7-8 (details can be found on the inside back cover of this issue). Richard will preach his Call Sermon at that Sunday morning worship service which will be followed by a congregational voting meeting. We believe that God has led us to this exciting moment in our ministry and look forward to growing together as a faith community with Richard as our spiritual leader. Thank you for the privilege you have given us. Sincerely, The Members of the Search Committee Rick Derr Pat Mendelsohn David Alfano Frosty Friedman Olga Hartwell Kristen Jacks Paul Olmsted Rick Woodman Call to a Special Congregational Meeting A special meeting of the Congregation is hereby called for Sunday, June 8, 2014 following the 10:00am Worship Service. The meeting will be held in the Meetinghouse: To hear and act upon the recommendation of the Senior Pastor Search Committee to call a new Senior Pastor; And to transact such other business as may properly come before the meeting. 7 From the Communication Beyond Words by Sue Asselin, RN June is National Aphasia Awareness Month. Over one million people nationwide are affected by aphasia, a language-processing disorder that impairs a person's ability to speak (expressive aphasia) or their ability to understand speech (receptive aphasia). Aphasia manifests itself differently in different people, but generally the individual's intelligence is intact. It is often caused by a stroke or head injury, but can also accompany some forms of dementia. Memory loss and dementia are related to but not the same as aphasia. It s complicated to decipher the causative relationship, but aphasia accompanies some types of dementia. In 2011, the Stephen Ministry hosted Maureen Matthews, RN, PhD (pictured here) to speak at their retreat. Dr. Matthews offered wonderful insights on how congregations can embrace, support and show God s love to those with Alzheimer s disease and other types of dementia, memory loss, and aphasia. Since then she has returned several times for Second Hours and other informal talks. Alzheimer s spoken here is one theme that Maureen Matthews uses to open up the dialogue about all kinds of dementia, so that people will get more comfortable discussing this common concern. Dr. Matthews has concentrated her work on the individual diagnosed with dementia, especially in the early stages, and identifying what can be done to support them on their journey. In 2006, she founded To Whom I May Concern, an interactive theater project created by men and women who have recently been diagnosed with a progressive brain illness such as Alzheimer s. The project s primary purpose is to support the dialogue between people with dementia and those who accompany them. There is a live performance of To Whom I May Concern happening in Stamford on June 5, details highlighted later in this article. It s important for us to try to put ourselves in the diagnosed person s shoes, to shift our perspective. To be honest, if we re blessed with a long life, we all will one day be more vulnerable, and perhaps require more patience, kindness, and understanding from others. When we encounter a person with communication difficulties or compromised mental function, we can empower them by offering respect, patience, and acceptance. Specific tips for speaking to aphasic individuals can be found on the Wellness bulletin board in the hallway just outside the Lounge. Indicating with gestures and offering choices are generally helpful techniques. But just looking into an individual's eyes may be the most meaningful exchange there is. It says "I'm not afraid to connect with you." If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an accepting smile must be worth a million. We can empower someone by sincerely looking past the barriers for the person within. Please come see me in Room 203 if you want to discuss things further. Some helpful resources are: National Aphasia Association offers resources for people with aphasia and their families. Dr. Maureen Matthews Early Stage Memory Loss Support Group, and the unique theater project, To Whom I May Concern. Stamford Counseling Center is home to Dr. Matthews Early Stage Memory Loss program. Greenwich Adult Day Care has an Early Stage Memory Loss Couples Support Group as well as Mastermind, a program to exercise the mind. Greenwich Hospital s Center for Healthy Aging offers comprehensive geriatric assessments and caregiver support groups. Artists for Alzheimer s is an organization that links artists of all kinds to people living with Alzheimer s disease, using artistic and cultural experiences as keys to unlock creativity, create new memories, and enrich lives in new, yet fundamental ways. Kettle Quilters Go Digital! The Kettle Quilters at FCCOG had their first meeting Monday, April 23, The records indicate that the ladies worked during school hours, brought a sandwich and put a kettle on for tea at noon. They used to stitch in Room 303 (now Craig s office) and sometimes had two quilts on frames in that space. The name Kettle Quilters came from making a cup of tea at noon. The quilters started by quilting for each other and for anyone for a modest price. This quickly grew into making quilts for the Women s Fellowship Antique Shows from 1974 to New England antiques dealers displayed their wares but the highlight of the show was the raffle of the handmade quilt. Other community benefactors have been the Perrot Library and Hill House. Since 1991 the Women s Fellowship has raffled a quilt each spring at the Annual Meeting and Luncheon. The annual antique show is gone, but proceeds from the raffle funds, and The Rummage Room profits are still allocated to, charities to support the needs of women and children. Now it is time to get the photo albums into our digital library. At this writing, the Women s Fellowship raffle quilts are already included on the FCCOG website. Soon to follow: quilts for pastors and staff - marking anniversaries and departures, baby quilts and This year s quilt raffle winners, Elizabeth and Joe McLoughlin other community benefit projects. You may know many of the quilters featured in the photos. Over 180 quilts have been made in the 40+ years. Watch for updates in News You Can Use on the website. We meet every week on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings in Room 203. Best to give a call to Inge Thalheim at as we slip into a modified summer schedule. We always welcome new stitchers. Try us - you may like what we do and get hooked! 8 The Meetinghouse Monthly

9 HomeFront Lenten Offering Project by First Congregational Church Helps Elderly Woman HomeFront (Stamford) was one of the recipients of this year s Lenten Offering at First Church. HomeFront is a community-based, volunteer-driven program that provides FREE home repairs to low -income homeowners, thus enabling them to remain in their homes with an improved quality of life. Thank you to the following volunteers from First Church who joined in on HomeFront Day on May 3 and spent the day painting and making minor repairs to the home of an elderly woman (Josie) in Old Greenwich. This is what community is all about! (See more pictures at fccog.org/photo-gallery.) Everyone is a mystic or artist until our culture, religion or education drives this out of us. Original Blessing is an empowering and necessary book, which leads us back to our own creativity and that deep, ecstatic center which resides beneath any fear of death. It is a hopeful book which guides us to rejoice and celebrate the uniqueness of our existence. Written in a lively, scholarly prose, it makes a strong case for a home-grown mystical tradition thousands of years old. An important, challenging work highly recommended. The Meetinghouse Monthly 9

Also, Ivy Beckwith, who grew up in CT and has ministered in several areas of the country, including New Canaan, and Brian McLaren. The presenters talked about the importance of telling the story, not only from the Bible, but our own life stories, our faith journey stories. Their messages have many implications for our congregation s quest for more meaningful, relevant and inspiring experiences in worship, in faith practices and in our life together. We welcome our new Church School Task Force Members We are pleased to welcome Nishani Naidoo (mother of Kareena and Devan), Shauna Dellascenza (mother of Amelie and Lola) and Dorothy Mueller (mother of Victoria Mueller Bradford). 12 The Rummage Room Questionnaire: Who is in charge of The Rummage Room? The Rummage Room was opened in 1964 by The Women s Guild of The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. After a few months the Guild changed its name to The Women s Fellowship. Today The Rummage Room Board, under the direction of the Fellowship, meets monthly to oversee the operation of The Rummage Room. The Board hires, oversees, and directs The Rummage Room Manager, Maria Drieghe, who manages a paid staff of four Assistant Managers - Connie Fauci, Nancy Hamilton, Veronica Klinka and Betty Shopovick. Maria started as a volunteer in 1995 and, due to her obvious talent and work ethic, became an Assistant Manager in In 2000 she became a Co-Manager with Debbie Stickney and then rose to full Manager in Maria is in charge of day-to-day management. Her talents include keeping all 60+ volunteers happy and fulfilled. She and Nancy Hamilton design the award-winning shop windows. She keeps the stock current and organized. In short, Maria is the backbone of the operation. The volunteers, many not from the church but from the community at large, enjoy the happy atmosphere and the sense of having fun while doing good. 18 HOLD THE DATE! Greenwich / Port Chester / Rye CROP HUNGER WALK SET FOR OCTOBER Mark your calendars! Sunday, October 5 is the date for the 2014 CROP Hunger Walk. This is the seventh annual hunger walk in the Greenwich, Port Chester, Rye area. Walk headquarters and starting point is the Second Congregational Church of Greenwich. After an easy two mile walk through downtown Greenwich, walkers will finish at Christ Church on East Putnam Ave. All funds raised will help support the work of Church World Service and two local hunger agencies, Neighbor to Neighbor of Greenwich and Carver Center of Port Chester. We can all be proud and grateful that our local walks have made significant contributions to these worldwide and local organizations, but hunger and poverty persist and the need is pressing. So please make every effort to get involved. There will be more details about this event in the July/ August issue of the Meetinghouse Monthly. In the meantime, you can learn more about hunger walks by going to crophungerwalk.org or cwsglobal.org. First Church Preschool There are still a limited number of spots available in our 3 and 4 year old afternoon preschool program (12:30 3:00 pm), as well as in our Pre-K program (9 am 2 pm) for the school year. Our Pre-K program is designed for children who are eligible to start kindergarten but would benefit from having additional time and individualized support in growing, learning, and developing before starting. Please contact the Preschool for more information or to register. Contact Information: First Church Preschool, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT ; darlak@fccog.org 18 The Meetinghouse Monthly
