4 HEARING GOD'S WORD FIRST LESSON Donald Haviland Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like

5 the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 10 Calendar TODAY Church School Because today is Rev. DenUyl s candidating sermon and there is a Congregational Meeting right after worship, there will be a Church School activity for all children who wish to participate in Room 104 which will continue through the Meeting. Summer Church School will start next week, Sunday, June 15 at the 8:00 am Beach Service. Bring your children to Tod s Point for Bible Stories at the Beach through June and July! Bible Study There is no Bible Study today, but we will conclude the season next Sunday, June 15 with the story of David and the Psalms. In addition, we'll prepare for the fall series on the Parallel Gospels. All are welcome even if you ve never been before. 11:20 am in the Lounge. NEXT WEEK Beach Services Return Next Sunday, June 15 Beach Services begin next Sunday, June 15 at 8:00 am at Greenwich Point (weather permitting). Communion is served every Sunday. Come and join us for this casual service. Summer Church School will also take place at this time down at the beach, so bring the whole family! Summer Choir Has Begun Please join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am in the Meetinghouse for a warm-up and rehearsal for the music being done that Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come before the start of the service to learn a simple anthem. Come any Sundays that you are available to help lead the congregation in worship. It's also a chance to experience worship from the choir loft. If you have any questions, please contact Craig Symons. Nights Off Women s Group Weather permitting, Nights Off will gather down at the beach (Tod s Point) on June 16 at 6:00 pm. This is a great time to socialize and catch up. Please bring a snack to share and whatever you would like to drink. Look for the

11 group at the first picnic table after going around the point past the Yacht Club and the sailing school. All women of the church are welcome to come.
