1 City of Kirtland Newsletter Spring / City of Faith and Beauty City of Kirtland 9301 Chillicothe Road Kirtland, OH A Message from the Mayor IN THE SPOTLIGHT COMMUNITY NEWS Community Thanksgiving Service Kirtland Area Service Council Holiday Program Voting Information Community Shred Day PUBLIC WORKS Snow Plowing Reminder Snow Parking Ban EMERGENCY SERVICES KPD Welcomes New Officers JD Memorial RECREATION NEW & Current Classes Adult Open-Gym Halloween Carnival Donuts with Santa SENIOR NEWS Senior Open House Save the Date Senior We periodically get the opportunity to work in what I will call Combined Organizational Teams to effect positive change. On behalf of the City of Kirtland I would like to extend our thanks to the Chagrin River Watershed Partners, The Ohio EPA, The Lake County Stormwater Management Agency, The Holden Arboretum, Mr. David Skegs, our City Engineer Phil Kiefer and Carm Catania our Service Director, for identifying and coming up with a solution for an erosion issue. The solution is called the Wisner Road Streambank Stabilization Project. This project, led by our partners at CRWP, has already gone out for the design build proposals, and will be funded by an Ohio EPA 319 grant and a commitment from the LCSMA for the balance. The Arboretum who has a conservancy over the property, has and will continue to provide their input on the finished design with respect to the selection of plant species. The City of Kirtland will get both the infrastructure benefit of securing the road and associated guardrail and the environmental benefit of the proper habitat restoration on this portion of the East Branch of the Chagrin River all without having to spend money from our general fund. A win for all involved. As Mayor, I am grateful that we have the experienced department heads and local partners to find cost effective solutions to significant challenges in stormwater, environment and infrastructure in our city of 16.8 square miles. Best Regards from City Hall, Mayor Doug Davidson FALL/WINTER 2018 Fire Department Receives New Engine The Kirtland Fire Department recently placed a new 2018 Rosenbauer Fire Engine in service at Station 2. 4 KIRTLAND NEWSLETTER FALL/WINTER 2018 PAGE 4 The Dangers of Wishcycling By Susan Robinson, Director of Public Affairs for Waste Management As the impacts of China s new import policies to reduce trash in the recyclables begin to impact our collection programs, you may be seeing articles about the health of recycling, both locally and across the globe. In many cases, these articles are communicating the same basic information: Recycling contamination or the percentage of trash mixed with recyclables has increased and it s jeopardizing the global recycling industry Going forward, China will not purchase recyclables if there is just a fraction of trash mixed with the items As a result, we all must focus our efforts on recycling the right items the right way Collection is not the same as recycling - Simply put, we must reduce the amount of contamination in the recycling stream, and this can only happen if the materials we collect are the right materials. Note the use of the word collect above. It s important to highlight collection, since the quality of the material we collect directly impacts the quality of what can ultimately be recycled and sold. A recent article by Nina Butler of More Recycling, describes the need to focus on collection: Many recycling entities are facing severe financial challenges right now despite the environmental benefits that come when recovered materials are used to make new products. We have equated collection with recycling when in reality that is just the first of many steps to ensure complete reabsorption of resources. Messaging has historically emphasized the importance of placing recyclables in recycling carts. As a result, consumers now equate the placement of materials in their recycling cart with recycling. From there, it is out-of-sight- out-of-mind and it is up to recyclers to ensure that discarded materials are recycled into new products. We call this wishful recycling wishcycling and it is lethal to our nation s recycling programs. Why it s important to only recycle the right items - So, why is wishcycling such a problem? There are multiple reasons, but what it all boils down to is that nonrecyclables in the recycling carts ultimately get sorted out at the recycling facility and disposed of as trash. In other words, wishcycling does no one any favors, except adding costs and reducing the amount of items that can ultimately be recycled. The average contamination rate for materials that we collect in curbside recycling programs has grown to about 25%. That means that 500 pounds of every 2,000 pounds that we collect at the curb is ultimately end up in the landfill where they should have gone in the first place. This increases the costs of sorting materials, transporting and disposing of trash, and lost value of good recyclables that are ruined due to contamination. At a global level, years of wishcycling across the world have contributed to end markets like China to get more strict on what they ll ultimately purchase and recycle into new materials. It s time to right the ship - Focusing on recycling the right things correctly has never been more important. At Waste Management, we are focusing on quality, increasing demand, and reducing the economic and environmental impact of the materials we manage for our customers. Collecting materials is not the same as recycling them. It s only when a material is recycled into something else that we realize the economic and environmental benefits. Anything short of this, and we re simply creating a problem that results in a negative environmental impact. Help solve this problem by learning the do s and don ts by visiting RORR.com and be sure to share this story!

Please help them by remembering the snow parking ban whenever the snow exceeds two inches during a period of 24 hours or less. The intent of this ordinance is to eliminate hazards created by leaving ridges of snow in the street, creating sight hazards with large piles of snow, and blocking ditches which impedes the normal flow of water. If you see this happening, please report it to the Kirtland Police Department at Anyone who violates this ordinance may be subject to a fine.

Officer Michael Frank Officer Zach Petric As an additional layer of security, KPD dispatchers will be monitoring 24-hour video surveillance of the entire Kirtland School campus. KPD along with the Kirtland Schools administration continue to plan, implement, and address additional security needs to protect the schools, staff, and students in the event of any emergencies that may arise. Help keep our children safe by being alert! Be on the lookout for KPD s two new Ford Explorer police cruisers with a fresh new look! As our older patrol cars approach their end of service, we budget ahead and plan accordingly to purchase new vehicles as needed. Officer LaTurner along with the department designed the new graphics and changed the color of the cruiser from white to black. We think they look pretty great! In Memory of JD! KPD and all our members would like to thank each and every one of you who have provided support, comfort, and kind words regarding the sad loss of our resident K9, JD! The loss of JD from our department came way too fast and unexpectedly for all of us after he was diagnosed with a very aggressive bone cancer. JD brought much love to everyone he came in contact with and he is sorely missed. With that, the KPD would like to thank the services of several businesses who have provided a memorial for JD that all of us can enjoy. The memorial will be placed to the rear of City Hall near a favorite trail that JD enjoyed strolling. The memorial consists of an etched plaque that was donated by O Toole Monuments of Fairport Harbor. This plaque will be secured, complements of and by Brunner s Funeral Home of Mentor, to a large decorative landscape stone, which was donated by Licursi s Garden Center of Kirtland. Many thanks to these businesses for their services and generosity, without them the KPD would not have been able to honor JD in the way he deserved.
