Last week, she died of cancer. Family, friends and colleagues described Bennion as a staunch professional, pleasant to a fault, stoic and introspective. Even those who knew of her long battle with breast cancer said she never said whether she was in pain or if the disease was progressing, said Rep. Max Black, R-Boise. "When you'd walk into Susan's office, there was just a smile," Black said. "You'd apologize for asking her to redo things and she never looked at it as a problem." Susan and David Bennion moved to Boise in the late 1960s shortly after they were married. She came to the Legislature with an impressive educational background, including a political science degree from Utah State University, where she graduated magna cum laude, and a master's degree from the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. Her experience, professionalism, writing skills and common-sense approach made her an effective member of the Legislative Services staff, said Lt. Gov. Brad Little, a former legislator. "She epitomizes those public servants that work for the state just because they like doing the work and like the people they are working with," Little said. She worked through Cancer returned the following year. "She had a wonderful spirit through this thing," David Bennion said. "Tenacious, I'll say. And in addition to that, she did it in a good spirit. Not a complainer or negative. She took it on." Susan Bennion also taught political science and government courses at Utah State and Boise State universities during the 1970s and 1980s. She was involved with a number of service organizations, including Capitol Jaycees, local school/parent organizations, the Boise Basin Quilters and the Bronco Athletic Association. Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2290 Warm Springs Ave. Besides her husband, Bennion is survived by her daughter, Natalie DelRio ; her son, Leland Bennion ; and a granddaughter.
