2 PAGE 2 FIRST FRIDAYS The Sunnyside First Friday Events continue on, as does the support they bring for our local food pantries and the fellowship if fosters for those in attendance. The last event held on February 2nd yielded $ 180 in cash plus various foodstuff donations and drew approximately 20 attendees/guests to the Lowery Kitchen and Bar located at 43rd Street and 43rd Avenue. The March 2018 iteration of this social mixer/fundraiser will be held right across the street at Bar 43 (located at rd Street) where a great time is expected for all, just as it was at the Lowery. The event will run from 7 to 10 PM. Come out and share a glass of your favorite beverage with old friends, fellowship while make new friends and do it all knowing a neighborhood family in need will eat better this week in part because of your efforts. 4 PAGE 4 A SCOUT IS REVERENT Troop 390 members at the 11:30 AM Spanish Mass at St. Teresa RC Church by Peter Ross On Sunday, February 25, 2018, members of Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 390 put into practice the twelfth point of the Scout Law, A Scout is Reverent, by holding their annual Scout Sunday Mass at their home base, Saint Teresa RC Church in Woodside. Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Explorer / Venturer units across the country, generally in February around Scouting s birthday/anniversary date, hold these special services at local churches, temples, mosques, gurdwaras and other faith centered locations in order to express their particular faiths through religious or spiritual observances and put their Duty to God in action. While not imposing any particular religion or faith system, these observances allow the Scouts, even if from other faiths or spiritual practices, a chance to reflect on their beliefs individually, to learn what other religions or faiths may practice and to find what is in many cases common ground among their different beliefs. On this day, the Scouts heard the homily given by Reverend Monsignor Steven A. Ferrari, who officiated both the English and Spanish Masses this year with assistance by Deacon Martin Soraire. In the message, they learned about sacrifice and the willingness to listen and serve, teachings that coincide with other areas and tenets of the Scout Oath and Law such as cheerful service and obedience. It is hoped that these messages will be incorporated into the Scouts thoughts and actions going forward as they have time to further contemplate and reflect on the ideas presented to them. 5 UNITED FORTIES MEETING At the February meeting, newly elected New York City Council Member for the 30th District, Robert (Bob) F. Holden, addressed the members and guests in attendance. Following this, Captain Ralph Forgione, 108th Pct Commanding Officer, gave the area crime report from the previous month and also took questions. Representatives of several area politicians, including Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Assemblyman Brian Barnwell and City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer also addressed the meeting and took questions. The highlight of the evening when Carol Burch, UFCA Vice President, announced that UFCA President, Don McCallian and his wife Eileen were celebrating their 55th Wedding Anniversary, which delighted the crowd. We will be looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on March 15th, 2018 at St Teresa s Parish Center at 7pm. The participation of various organizations on various issues makes this the most unique and interesting of all Saint Patrick s parades. The parade joins the two communities while highlighting the history of the Irish in this area. The gathering of people with opposing viewpoints on various issues creates an exciting and enjoyable day for all. It is my hope that the growing inclusion into the March 17 Manhattan parade doesn t take away from our own diverse gathering of parade marchers and viewers. GOOD NEWS Dear Sherilyn, Perhaps it is true that it is darkest before the dawn. Just as the cavalcade of garbage trucks along 35 th Avenue in Long Island City reached increased levels of obnoxious presence being double parked and traversing 21Street to exceed former limits, last week we heard from multiple sources that the budget for a new depot was increased from $130 to $140 million. In addition, we were told that the new targeted day for the move will be May These positive developments were heralded by Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney in her letter of updates; Councilman Costa Constantinides, in whose district the site will be located; and Stacey Eluik, the Queens representative for the Public Advocate Leticia James. Other local leaders who have been very supportive of a resolution to this issue are Assemblymember Catherine Nolan; Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and Marie Torniali, Executive Director of the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition. It is never too early to give thanks and express gratitude; however, we will be watching to see if the new deadline becomes a reality. The Council Member presented the Distinguished Public Service Award to NYPD Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Queens North, Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes who made history by becoming the first African American female to command an NYC Patrol Borough.
