St. Augustine was celebrated Friday, August 24, 2009, the day of his death in 430 AD, at Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church, with lectures by Sunnysiders on his life and work. This day of Christian education attracted sixty plus interested attendees from Queen of Angels and nearby parishes. Due to the success of the class, plans for a similar event about St. Thomas Aquinas is planned for January 21, 2010, and will be more widely publicized so that those interested may arrange to attend. St. Augustine is considered to be the most influential theologian in the history of the church, and is also a seminal scholar in western civilization as a whole. In addition to Father Michael Mulvihill, a priest at Queen of Angels, the lecturers, all parishioners, was Michael O Herlihy, an advanced biochemist, Richard Drake, who taught college literature for years, and Conrad Gomez, a practicing psychoanalyst, who conducted a simultaneous class in Spanish. Attendee Frances Fudge said, This was fascinating! I can t wait for the next one. Also to be discussed, is last week s editorial on Dr. Dave Goldhaber and the problems with the traffic enforcement methods in our area. Note: The office of the Woodside Herald also spoke with Assemblyman Michael Den Dekker about his proposed Bill that would require traffic enforcement agents to give a verbal warning to occupied vehicles, before issuing a ticket. As of press time, Assemblyman Den Dekker did not have a Bill number, but traffic enforcement methods are something that he is currently persuing. Mayor Bloomberg opened his new campaign office this past Wednesday evening at Greenpoint Avenue in Sunnyside. (Formerly the Ten Express women s clothing store.) The Mayor made an appearance at the opening, briefly speaking about his campaign for re-election to a very enthusiastic large crowd of people.

Assurance GHI-Pref Plus THE WOODSIDE HERALD FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 Praise, Food & Fun For All At the Feast of St. Teresa in Woodside On Saturday, Oct. 3 rd, St. Teresa s Church in Woodside will celebrate the feast day of its parish patron, St. Teresa of Lisieux. A Celebration Mass will be held at 5:00 PM, a procession will carry the image of St. Teresa through the neighborhood, and an evening of food and family fun will fill the church auditorium. The procession will gather after mass in front of the church, at 44 th Street and 50 th Avenue. Participants will proceed up to 47 th Street, over to 47 th Avenue, down to 44 th Street and back to the church. The Rosary will be recited during the procession, the decades punctuated by voices of praise singing joyous hymns and songs. Brightening the day will be a procession of children in folk costumes representing the lands of their ancestors. Afterwards, the church auditorium will host an evening of food and entertainment, with folk music and dance performances. Admission is free and all are welcome. The feast is a tour of the world in food, reflecting both the diverse origins and the common heart of St. Teresa s community of faith. This year s offerings include ethnic dishes from the parish s American, European, Filipino, Indian, Latino and Lebanese communities a local expression of the global love felt for Teresa of Lisieux. St. Teresa died in 1897 when just 24 years old, but in her writings left behind an ageless treasure of guiding wisdom. Her Little Way to holiness, a spiritual guide of profound simplicity, has inspired and strengthened people all over the world and enabled many to make the first steps towards dialog with God. In The Story of a Soul she writes of feeling daunted by the elevated language of formal prayer, which she overcomes with loving simplicity: I do as children that cannot read. I say very simply to God what I wish to say, without composing beautiful sentences, and He always understands me. For me, prayer is a simple glance directed to heaven, a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally, it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus. Among her most powerful messages is that holiness does not require sophistication or the performance of heroic deeds. The only way I can prove my love is by scattering flowers, and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doing of the least actions for love, she writes. 3 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2009 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 3 SUNNYSIDE COMMUNITY SERVICES TO HONOR JUDY ZANGWILL AT ANNUAL BENEFIT Sunnyside Community Services is pleased and proud to announce it is honoring its executive director, Judith Zangwill, at its Annual Benefit Reception on Thursday, October 22, Zangwill has been the executive director of SCS since 1990, and from 1986 to 1990 served as associate executive director. Her vision and leadership have been integral to SCS s growth and development, taking the organization from a local senior center in a tiny church basement to three corporations providing hundreds of thousands of hours of community services and home care, with more than 125 in-house staff, 1,800 home care workers and other field staff, and more than 180 volunteers. In addition to her work at SCS, Zangwill sits on the Board of the Council of Senior Centers and Services, a nonprofit umbrella organization developed to provide training, technical support and advocacy for 265 senior service providers in New York City, and chairs its strategic planning committee. She also is a member of the board of directors of United Neighborhood Houses, the umbrella group for New York City settlement houses, and is chair of its Executive Directors Council. She also is on the board of the Sunnywood housing complex for frail elderly and disabled low income seniors, which is managed jointly by SCS and Woodside on the Move. Ms. Zangwill also is past president of the local Kiwanis club and of her sons PTA, and is a proud member of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, Queens Chamber of Commerce, the Long Island City Business Development Corporation (LICBDC), and District 3 Community School Board. Both St. Teresa s and St. Raphael s Food Pantries will be on hand to accept all of your generous donations. Also on hand will be Linda s Feral Cat Association who will be collecting cat food on behalf of the stray cat population. Sunnyside Neighbors Host Candidate Deirdre Feerick After the meeting Mr. & Mrs. Carmona, Mr. & Mrs. Makowskii, Antoinette Siiano, Deidre Feerick, and host Luke Adams all took time to enjoy a laugh. Democratic City Council Candidate Deirdre Feerick met with her neighbors on Sunday in the home of Luke Adams, a community organizer, on 47 th Avenue. Feerick is running in the September 15 th primary election to succeed Council Member Eric Gioia, a District 26 candidate for public advocate, who has endorsed Feerick. Feerick, a lifelong resident of the district, heard neighbors concerns on a range of issues from street crossing safety to the quality of the neighborhood s parks and the need for improved lighting in Noonan Playground on 47 th Avenue. As an oversight attorney at the City Council, Deirdre discussed how her experience in city government lends her an expertise that will solve such quality-of-life concerns when she is a council member. Luke Adams said: Deirdre Feerick is my candidate because I trust her the most to get the job done right as the next council member for this district. Feerick said: It is always great to sit down with my neighbors and hear from them about the issues that confront us and what they want done in the City Council. As someone who really values the upbringing I got in Sunnyside, I know how important it is to keep the neighborhoods of the district great places to raise families and that s why I m running for City Council. For me, it s not just about getting into office. It s about doing the hard work of fighting to make sure government works for neighbors I have known my whole life. Feerick s late father was a retired NYPD detective and her mother is a nurse. The eldest of six sisters, Feerick is a graduate of St. Raphael s grammar school, the University of Albany and Brooklyn Law School. Feerick has won the support of a broad spectrum of elected officials and labor and civic groups, including Congressman Joe Crowley, Borough President Helen Marshall, Council Members Eric Gioia and Annabel Palma, former City Council Member Walter McCaffrey, the city s police, fire, correction and sanitation unions, Assembly Members José Peralta and Michael Gianaris, Queens County Puerto Ricans for Political Action and the Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens.
