1 S E R R A C L U B O F P O R T L A N D B U L L E T I N July 2017 Summer is here and all our thoughts seem to rest on finding someplace to get away from it all. The weather is more than wonderful, and one should find the time to take a drink and go outside, find some close by shade and sit quietly in a summer temperature that stays in the low 80s. What do we do as we sit in the shade? I would suggest that you spend this time thanking God for the environment around you and for all that he has given you to bring you rest from your ongoing fears and your anxieties. God is wonderful in providing you such rest when you need it. After you thank him, extend your thoughts in prayer for vocations to the priesthood and to all religious life: Lord of the Harvest send out your laborers into the harvest. Make special provisions for those who are in your parish families. Ask the Lord to focus on your community and call all those prospective candidates who will serve God gladly and joyfully in a parish community. Extend your prayerful request to the vicariate around you and to all the Archdiocese. Thank the Lord with a gracious heart and tell him that you believe that he will answer your prayer. That did not take long. It s not hard to take the time. I am asking all Serrans to increase your time with God. That means find the time and commit to it. You will do far more in enhancing vocations in this Archdiocese if you bring yourself to God and tell him how well you are doing and how well He is doing to better your life and address the vocational needs of our parishes. In this way we are stirring the spirit to answer our vocational needs. For all officers I am asking you to attend Fr. Jeff s Day of Prayer and Reflection at St. Anthony s Parish in Tigard on Saturday, August 12 th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. It will involve Mass, a rosary, a light continental breakfast, fellowship, and time to receive and discuss a Vocation Plan with Father Jeff. It will also be a time to reflect and share on our own call to holiness as we involve ourselves more fully in the Serran Mission for Vocations. It is a time to share our hopes and ideas with other officers from the other clubs in the Archdiocese. So mark this on your calendar. It is our way to invite God to show us His plan for our endeavors in providing a vocational outreach to our parishes. Prayer must underlie, direct, sustain, and support all of Serra s many and varied activities to promote vocations. (Justin Cardinal Rigali s address to the Serran 2007 International Convention), In September, we will provide a second retreat for all Parish Vocation Committee & Serra members. These are worthwhile activities to kick off the new year in vocations and show God that we are eager and willing to sustain and support his call to send out laborers into the harvest. 2 Serra Club of Portland Bulletin Page 2 MEETING RECAPS June 21, Reverend Ralph Recker OSB is the Director of Admissions at Mount Angel Seminary. He spoke to the Serra Club about his pilgrimage with several seminarian deacons to the Holy Land. Father Ralph shared the virgin birth as an angel of the Lord said to Mary that the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. You shall conceive and bear a son, called Jesus, who is the Son of the most High Thus, Mary became the Mother of Jesus. Father Ralph showed slides of Nazareth and the place of Jesus birth. He also showed a photo of his saying Mass nearby. He and the seminarians visited the river Jordan, where Jesus was baptized and then onto the Mount of Temptation where Jesus spent time in contemplation. Father Ralph s group also visited Galilee where Jesus performed several miracles, including the multiplication of loaves and fish and walking on water. The group concluded their visit to Israel soon after Father Ralph celebrated Mass in the Holy Sepulcher where Jesus was laid to rest. However, there was no figure or statue of Jesus because He had risen from the dead. July 5, Most of the attendees at the Serra meeting on July 5 had read the book, The Shack. The Monseigner made an excellent presentation as to the lessons to be gained from the book. He indicated that the book is really about the relationship a man, named Mark, had with his three young children. Suddenly life takes a drastic turn when his young daughter is abducted and murdered. The father speaks with God, asking why did you let this happen? This is followed by some incredible dialogue between the man and God. After three years extreme sadness is destroying the man s life. Another winter arrives and he finds in his mailbox a note telling him to come to the shack for some discussion. The man goes to the shack, thinking that the murderer might be there. The man picks up a gun and heads to the shack. Upon arrival he encounters a man living in the nearby forest. The man and he share their sorrows but eventually discover that they have many reasons for living. The readers of this book eventually realize that the stranger is Jesus and the lesson to be learned is that when the going gets tough the tenderness of God is needed.
