But for me, I made the strategic decision to serve at my church because it was there where my efforts could result in someone s life being changed for eternity. It is in a local church where a person could be made brand new and become redeemed. Volunteering At My Church Has Given Me Broader Perspective Serving others has allowed me to focus on larger issues and others rather than always on myself. Volunteering At My Church Has Given Me Lifelong Friendships There is a unique relational bond which comes from being in the foxhole with someone and serving together. I have made literally hundreds of personal connections and lifelong friends because of volunteering at my church. Volunteering At My Church Has Given Me A Healthier Self-Image It may sound egotistical but there is a healthy sense of pride which comes from serving others and not being called to a lesser task. You just feel better about yourself when your life matters and makes a difference. Volunteering At My Church Helps Others Living an internally focused life benefits no one. Serving others relieves suffering, benefits the under-resourced, meets the needs of the marginalized, provides hope, and improves the quality of people s lives. Volunteering At My Church Has Made Me More Generous Generosity is time, talent and treasure. Church volunteers give sacrificially of their time and talent BEFORE giving sacrificially of their treasure. It is a sequential process. By being generous with my time and talent, financial generosity has been a natural outflow. Volunteering At My Church Taught Me How To Make Better Decisions When I used to teach Sunday School in college, I could have gone out every Saturday night with the guys. However, I learned early in the process the best decisions come when you give up what is good (Saturday night with the guys) for what is best (studying on Saturday nights to serve others on Sunday mornings). Volunteering At My Church Makes Me A Better Thinker Being a quality volunteer requires sacrifice, study and preparation. Volunteering at my church has made me smarter. Volunteering At My Church Has Given Me Lasting Influence My daughter knows nothing other than her parents serving others. A privilege I never planned when I took my first volunteer role in 1986 was one day I would be passing on a legacy of service to the next generation. Volunteering At My Church Will One Day Result In A Greater Reward Like many of you, I look forward to the day when I hear my Heavenly Father say Well done my good and faithful servant. 4 St. Paul s UCC/ELCA Church Council Minutes of April 17, pm A community of Christian believers empowered by God to reach out and serve with compassion, provide fellowship in a caring environment, and grow in faith through worship and continuing education. Proposed Agenda Call to order Called to order at 7:04 p.m. Present: Randy Snell, Carol Boynton, Rich Tucker, Sarah Sommer, Kevin Huseth, Nick Koverman, Jennifer Schultz, Brielle Meisch, and John Botten. Opening Devotion Carol Boynton Adoption of the Agenda Motion: Koverman, Seconded: Sommer. MCU Pastor and Church Officer Reports Secretary s Report Motion: Sommer, Seconded: Schultz. MCU Treasurer s Report Botten relayed no major changes. Motion: Schultz, Seconded: Koverman. MCU Church Committee Reports Mutual Ministry No report Outreach and Evangelism No report Parish Education Plans for Sunday School service in May. VBS received a grant. The float will continue for at least another year as the group would take it on for Heartland Days. Property Management Tucker reported that he suggested replacing the element and calling Kenmore to do it. Also recommended replacing circuit breaker. A brief discussion was held with respect to the neighboring lot listed for $21,500. Stewardship no report Worship Youth / SPY Meisch detailed the Ironwood Spring Christian Ranch visit Old Business Discussion of Interim Process Koverman highlighted discussions with Susan Miller of the ELCA Synod and that she was looking for additional interim options. Relayed that Pastor Susan Li was finishing up a call and might be interested and was putting the congregation in contact with her. Pastor Ferkin has agreed to continue as supply. Council would seek to invite Pastor Li for a visit and then invite her to hold a service to meet congregation. Council then discussed searching for interested members of the Call Committee to review at their May meeting to then start the process. Lock change in loft It was discussed and clarified that Tucker would contact Tom s Lock & Key to have the lock changed as damage had been done previously to the pipes and repairs were necessary. Council agreed lock change was a minimal investment for the asset of the church. New Business Mission of the Month John Botten relayed the past program of Mission of the Month and asked if Council would be interested in restarting the program. He provided a past list and said that he would review them to see if they needed to be updated. General consensus was received that it was a good idea and one to be brought back at the following meeting. Church property rental Boynton relayed three requests: April 18 th Land Stewardship, May 3 rd (Kitchen Use-catering); and 40 chairs/6 tables June 1. After discussion, a motion was made to approve the April 18 th use, to allow the kitchen use as a non-member for $100 with $50.00 to be refundable if kitchen is left in good condition, and that the older wooden tables and folding chairs would be allowed if returned by June 2. 6 In honor of Memorial Day at our May 27 th worship service SMsgt. Jim Mueller told the story of an incredible woman, Liz Wall Strohfus, from Faribault, MN. She was a member of the Women s Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II. Strohfus was an advocate for women and specifically female vets. In her 90 s she worked with Senator Amy Klobuchar to pass a law that allows WASP members to be buried at Arlington Cemetery. Jim also read all the names of those who have served their country from St. Paul s Church. God bless you all for your service.! Jim s daughter, Janelle, accompanied Jon Nienow with her flute during worship. We were glad Janelle could share her love of music with us.
