1 The Reminder MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF BUIES CREEK FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH VOLUME 51 ~ ISSUE 6 JUNE 2016 New Series. Jonathan Yarboro started a new sermon series on May 22 nd and will continue through July 24 th. Come join us each Sunday morning at 11 am to hear what God has for us as we become more contagious Christians going about our daily lives reaching and teaching others about Jesus Christ. It only takes a spark to get a fire started that will spread like wild fires. 1 Theme Contagious Slogan Living a Multiplicative Faith Song We Believe by Newsboys Central Verse And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 2 Timothy 2:2

2 Music Ministry... As we have been in a transition time in our church, we have looked at many aspects of how we worship. As music minister, I have heard the desire from our church to become more contemporary. We have had a good college ministry this year and people seem to be working together to move in the direction believed to be God s will for our church. Through music, we have also moved in the direction of more contemporary styles of music. This has been well received by many. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. 7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Psalm 95:6-7 I know it can be difficult to bring about change in a church with a long history like Buies Creek First Baptist. There are some people who prefer the traditional hymns every Sunday because that is how they express their beliefs and emotions involved in worship. There are those who prefer that we move to a more contemporary style of music which would also attract college students since that is how many of them worship. We have tried to respond to what people are desiring and meet both needs by having a blended service. Some churches break up their congregation into more than one service to address the desires and the various people. We are not able to do that at this time with our current attendance. This summer, when the choir is not meeting, we will introduce some new songs for more contemporary worship. One of the problems going into contemporary music means to learn new songs. The words are put on the screen and people have to learn the song and music by listening and following those leading the music. The rhythms and words are quite different from the hymns. This can be frustrating and I understand what that means. On Sunday night, June 12, at 6:00 pm we will have a time of introducing some more music to the congregation and spending time learning the music. This will be Praise Extravaganza. I hope all will be able to come and enjoy the music of our Lord. There are many good song writers who have searched scripture and written some wonderful praise songs for use in worship of God s people. continued of page 5 2

Our Nation, Its leaders, Our Armed Forces, Our missionaries, Children and Youth Camps this month Our Homebound: Joyce Stewart (Harnett Woods), Eloise Shepherd, (Harnett Woods), Kenny Moore (Emerald Nursing & Rehab), Mary Lou Boswell (Wayne Hatcher s mother at Universal Health Care), Barbara Harmon (ARC of Dunn) Our Members: Frances Johnson, Rufus Turner, Pat Harmon, Walter Harmon Others: Edwin Kendrick (Ron Kendrick s father), Delton Maynard (Priscilla Mangum s father), Edna Ogburn (Rue Stewart s mother), Hope Sweat (Marsha Sheakley s niece), Fred Sexton (Faye Sexton s husband), Frances Jones (Kathy Melvin s mother), Jean Sweat (Marsha Sheakley s aunt) praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints Ephesians 6:18 It has been a real joy having the Munz family worship with us over the past few months. We welcome Chris Munz upon his profession of faith. In the near future we will be celebrating with Chris in baptism. Chris was born and raised in rural Moore County, and met his wife Natalie in college at UNC Chapel Hill, back in They moved back to Buies Creek, where he went to law school and finished in They were married at this church, where Natalie has attended since childhood. 4 I pray that out of Your glorious riches You will strengthen (our church family) with Your power through Your Spirit in our inner being, so that You may dwell in our heart through faith. And I pray that we, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is Your love. I ask that we will know that this love surpasses knowledge. I also ask that we will be filled with Your fullness. Ephesians 3:16-19 Recognizing the awesome task before us, Please know that the children and I are praying for those on our search committee, Deacons and those that are stepping up during this transitional period of the life of our church. I am thankful for the many prayer warriors that we have in our church family. I would ask that you remember our CentriKid camp experience and our group. (CentriKid is a five day, four night camp for 3rd 6th graders to experience the time of their lives and learn more about the message of Jesus Christ! From the future sports star to the young scientist to the rising chef, every kid gets to participate in exciting activities of their choice. We bring our kids to camp where they ll take part in Bible study, recreation, track times, and worship. CentriKid is staffed by college and seminary students who can t wait to hang out with our kids and love to share Christ through every aspect of camp!) This year we are 21 strong, seven adults, four girls and ten boys! (Doug & Debbie Jones, Johnny Sheakley, Wanda and Rob Register, Monica Stewart, Abby Hayes, Zoe Sheakley, Kayleigh Stewart, Aaron Garris, Roman Matthews, Caleb Smith, Carson & Cassidy Register, Christian Kumpf, Allen Hudson, Michael & Travis Morton, Dallas Sorrell, Lincoln West and Alana Johnson). This exciting excursion will be on June The theme for the week will be Unseen. This summer we will study the passage of Ephesians 6:10-20 and learn how the armor of God is powerful and real, although it is unseen. Each day focuses on an aspect of the armor of God. The beginning of the week is designed to help campers discover and understand elements of our faith that are unseen. Mid-week we ll make a shift to discussing how to make our faith visible with boldness as the things of God are not meant to remain unseen. KEY VERSE: Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the Gospel. Ephesians 6:19 Day 1: Unseen Strength- Campers learn where our power comes from. Day 2: Unseen Truth- Campers look at the Bible as our source of Truth. Day 3: Unseen Peace- As we spread the Gospel, we must remember to have peace in all circumstances. Day 4: Visible Faith- When our lives are based in Truth, our actions reflect our Faith. Day 5: Visible Boldness- Campers will know that we can have Boldness in and through Christ as we make His message known. Also, please be in prayer and consider where you might assist as we look forward to VBS 2016! C A V E Q U E S T - F O L L O W I N G J E S U S T H E L I G H T O F T H E W O R L D will be on July in the evenings. We begin at 5:30 for dinner and start VBS promptly at 6:00 p.m. There are still many positions available as we get ready to glow on this amazing expedition. Again, please be praying for VBS and considering where God can use you to illuminate and share the name of Jesus! This Little Light of Mine Debbie 4

As I have stated before, we have some amazing talent in our midst at Buies Creek First Baptist Church. The Handbells have taken off for the summer. Thanks to Martha Harmon for leading us this year and to those who have played. We were small this year but we were faithful to practice and perform. I will be contacting the music department at Campbell to try to schedule the choir and other musical groups to come and share their music with us in the fall when school starts up again. We can always use more help with the music program so please consider joining us. Talk to me. We need you. Thanks to the choir members who have been so faithful this year to come to practice and respond to everything we have asked of them with no complaints. You have been wonderful to work with. God has blessed us richly this year. Thanks to Joan Lanier at the organ for such beautiful music. She will take off for the summer and we will miss her music. Tammy Martin, our pianist, has also been such a great musician on the keyboard and with her lovely alto voice. She has joined the choir on many occasions. This has added greatly to our music. Thanks Tammy. Eric Ross and Doug Jones have helped carry out the music program through the sound and screen. Thanks so much. Patsy Paul has put all the words on the screen for us to follow. Thanks for helping us worship, Patsy. We love you all. In His Service, Dorothy Mullins June 12th 6 pm 5

6 The Brick... A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, 'What was that all about and who are you? Just what are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?' The young boy was apologetic. 'Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,' He pleaded. 'I threw the brick because no one else would stop...' With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. 'It's my brother,' he said, 'He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.' Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, 'Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.' Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. 'Thank you and may God bless you,' the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy! push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: 'Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention! God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don t have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not. Thought for the Day: If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring. He sends you a sunrise every morning. Face it, friend - He is crazy about you! (Submitted by a friend via . Origination is unknown but it is a very important lesson to learn.) Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. John 8:12 6

7 7 This month begins a spotlight on a different Bible Study/Sunday School each month. Our focus this month is on the Sunday morning Bible Study Class which is currently led by Paula Smith. We hope you enjoy getting to know a little more about this class and others as the months go by. Generations of Hearts and Hands is a Sunday morning Bible Study/Sunday School class for women of all ages. Our current members are ages 30 to almost 90, but if you re younger or older, you ll fit right in. Our class motto is women promoting JOY in the Lord, LOVE for each other, PEACE in the Spirit. We currently use the Uniform Bible Study Series which is a 6-year plan for reading and studying the Bible. The Uniform series is designed to get us into every part of the Bible during the 6-year plan. Each week, in addition to studying the Bible lesson text, we have plenty of time for thought-provoking discussion questions which help us think about how we can apply the lesson truths to our lives. Our class time ends with prayer requests, praises and prayer. We meet in one of the classrooms off of the Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings from 9:45-10:45 a.m. We d love for you to join us. In fact, we re saving you a chair. Paula Smith is our teacher. If you have any questions, please call her at She d welcome the opportunity to talk to you about Sunday School and what it means to her. Stanley and Jackie are retired. They love growing things-- vegetables, fruit and flowers--and regularly volunteer with the Harnett County Cooperative Extension as Master Gardeners. They enjoy trips to the beach. They were both actively involved in Cary First for many years. Allison Bain remembered playing softball with Jackie at Cary First and said that she could play ball. Stanley and Jackie have already joined Sunday School classes at Buies Creek First. Stanley is attending the men s class; Jackie is attending the women s class. We re so glad that Stanley and Jackie have joined our church. We look forward to serving the Lord alongside of them for many years to come. Welcome to Stanley and Jackie Weaver who joined our church on Sunday, May 22, by transfer of letter from Cary First Baptist Church. Stanley and Jackie have recently moved to Buies Creek from Cary after renovating Stanley s childhood home on Mitchell Road. Stanley s parents, Hazel and Elijah, were longtime members of Buies Creek First Baptist Church. Stanley and Jackie have a daughter, Lisa, who is married to Rick, and two grandchildren, Alison and Kyle, who is married to Katie. Time with family and friends is important to the Weavers.
