The 1948 hymnal contained 20 of his works and the 1985 edition contains only nine. As time asses we are blessed with more LDS coosers who add to our reertoire of hymns, but often older works fade into obscurity. I hoe we will not forget the great heritage we have been given by Bro. 2 Biograhy of George E. P. Careless George Edward Percy Careless was born to George and Eliza Kitchen Careless on Set 24, 1839 in London, England. His father died on Christmas day in On Oct 6, 1850, he was batized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by Elder John Hyde. As a child he demonstrated excetional musical talent and was a student at the Royal Academy of London. Following graduation, he erformed under the direction of several rominent conductors at Exeter Hall, Drury Lane and the Crystal Palace. He articiated in concerts, oeras and oratorios. While in England, his church callings included directing congregational music and the London LDS choir. George immigrated to Utah in While crossing the Atlantic Ocean he coosed the music for Parley P. Pratt s oem The Morning Breaks. George married Lavenia Trilett on Aug 18, They met in England when she sang in the London Choir. She was known as an unusually gifted singer and was often featured in his roductions. They had one daughter, Carlotta, born Mar 12, 1878, who died Aug 14 of the same year. When Lavinia died on July 10, 1885 her death was mourned as a great loss by the entire Utah music community. Thirteen years later George married Jane Nightingale Davis, a congenial and suortive coanion, daughter of Edward Davis. Soon after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, President Brigham Young invited Bro. Careless to direct the Salt Lake Theatre orchestra. This orchestra was coosed of twenty-four, unaid men. After hearing them erform, he recommended that their numbers be cut and that they become a aid organization. Reluctantly he was given ermission to make these changes. Bro. Careless coosed the dramatic curtain music for the lays roduced by the Sale Lake Theatre. He served in this osition for two sixyear eriods. Known by the title Professor Careless, he also directed the Salt Lake Oera Coany, with their erformances including Gilbert & Sullivan s oeras Mikado and Pinafore. Bro. Careless served as the director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for eleven years, from 1869 to Among his most notable students was J. Sencer Cornwall, who later conducted the Tabernacle Choir. In 1875, Professor Careless directed George Frederic Handel s Messiah, its first erformance in the Rocky Mountains. Two hundred singers and a full orchestra articiated in this erformance. In 1879 he organized the Careless orchestra. This grou erformed together for seven years, gave regular concerts and enjoyed both artistic and financial success. Careless artnered with David O. Calder to ublish the Musical Times, the first musical quarterly in the Rocky Mountains. Following formal retirement, he continued to teach voice, violin, iano, organ, harmony and sightreading lessons. Bro. Careless stands as one of the great ioneers of LDS music. George Careless died on Mar 5, 1932.

36 rit. This hymn was found in the 1889 edition of the Latter-Day Saints Psalmody. The hymn tune was entitled "Carthage" and it seaks of the martyrdom of the rohet Joseh and his brother Hyrum Smith. "They're gone from my embrace, from earthly scenes their sirits fled. God called them forth, and led them by his own right hand. Christ's coming to roclaim on earth, and gather Israel to their land."
