1 ' CHAPTER V THE MNSTERS OF PENNSYLVANA CONFERENCE The names are listed in the inder in which they first appear in the conference minutes. The first fourteen names appear in the record of There is nothing to indicate how and when they joined the fellowship, or when and where they.were ordained. More names appear in the rosters of later conferences without an explanation of how and when received. The forming of other conferences by groups withdrawing from the original conference accounts for the lack of information concerning the death and place of burial of many members. n the earlier years a considerable number joined other conferences without the formality of getting transfers. Many of the early ordinations were very informal. See Drury's History, page 159. n some instances ministers transferred from our conference to other conferences and later returned to us. n such cases we mention the time of their first joining and final departure. Many ministers, already ordained, have joined by transfer from other -conferences, which accounts for their ordination dates being previous to entering the conference. 13 " "" Membership Ceased " i u 0 When How NAME Bom lij"'.s Died Place of Burial 1 Otterbein, P. W Cunkle, Paul V Needy, Ellwood E Thompson, C. L Shearer, Daniel L Higgins, D. Rayborn Sipe, Harold ==== 1937 Withdrew NOTE ON ORDNATONS Prior to October 2, 1813, there was no ceremony of ordination involving the laying on of hands. The conference as a whole voted credentials granting the privilege of preaching, baptizing and administering the sacraments. This has been called by some of our historians "informal ordination." A few of our early ministers had been ordained in other communions before entering the fellowship of Otterbein. The Miami Conference of 1813 "deplored that too little order was observed, both in the reception and the ordination of preachers. The conference took under consideration whether it is proper to ordain preachers without the laying on of hands of the elders." A letter was ordered sent to the aged Otterbein asking him to "ordain by the laying on of hands one or more preachers, who afterward may perform the same for others." Bishop Otterbein, assisted by Rev. Wm. Ryland, a Methodist elder, ordained Revs. christian Newcomer, Joseph Hoffman and Frederick Shaffer at his parsonage in Ba.!timore; October 2, At the time Bishop Otterbein stated: " have always considered myself too unworthy to perform this solemn injunction of the Apostle, but now perceive the necessity of doing so, before shall be removed." Following his own formal ordination, Newcomer ordained a number of ministers already mature in the work. At the first General Conference in 1815 it was agreed that there should be a formal ordination and it was written into the Discipline. (See Newcomer's Journal, pages 219 and 220. Also Drury's History, pages ) > ('j! N 00.._,
