3 The Universe, for week May 8, Associated Press U.S. Sen. Orr Hatch (left) former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist (right) both addressed delegates at Utah Republican Convention, on Saturday, April 21 Sy. Utah senate race draws nationwide attention By KAT E BENNION The upcomg Senate race is attractg significant attention as state, national local parties get volved. Students are campaigng on both sides some as elected delegates that represented ir preccts at state convention April. Andrew Bates, a junior busess management, began volunteerg for Republican Sen. Orr Hatch s campaign January. It s been an tense race because people have tense feelgs about what s happeng country right now, Bates It s been an terestg race because a lot more people are volved. Normally young people don t care o much about this, but I have seen a lot student volvement. In addition cumbent Hatch, former Republican state Sen. Dan Liljenquist, has attracted fans on campus. A BYU Facebook group, Students St with Dan, has more than 200 members. Matw Behun, BYU Republicans digital media chair for Wter 2012, said he volunteers for Liljenquist campaign. [I can see this as] old versus new, Behun Dan is 37, Hatch is 77. Dan was state senate for three years, Sen. Hatch has been re for 35 years I really thk he [Liljenquist] can help fix economy fix some fancial problems especially that we re facg right now. Bates attributes student volvement a can-do attitude. There s a lot passion feelg, are recognizg that we can shape way that our country goes y want be a part that, Bates They want get volved do whatever y can. Evelyn Call, communications direcr for Hatch campaign, attributes media spotlight recent hisry. I thk it has somethg do with Sen. Bennett s campaign 2010, beg not elected through convention, Call Two years ago, cumbent Sen. Bob Bennett surprised Utahns by losg Republican cidacy. Sen. Hatch said, you know, I probably need start my campaign a little bit earlier put ger a larger staff make sure that doesn t occur 2012 election, Call Utah s Senate race is also contested because, if re-elected, Hatch s seniority puts him a position become chair Senate Fance Committee. Presidential cidate Mitt Romney has released a statement endorsg Hatch, used a Hatch campaign video, sayg Hatch s leadership committee, would be critical achievg Romney s economic objectives. A political action committee two super PACs, Freedom- Works Freedom Path, are contributg fray. Both cidates, as well as public, have expressed frustration at times about negative external advertisg comg from super PACs. There s a lot outside terest this race, Liljenquist said at a recent wn hall meetg Provo. I thk I was most damaged by this. I don t have millions dollars go on air defend myself. FreedomWorks came FreedomPath came on or side. Call said problem starts party s ability have a say advertisg. To be honest, we would have been happy with no outside terests comg, Call The problem is you can t control that message. By law re is no coordation between our campaign ir organization, so y control message. Sometimes it can be frustratg. DEMOCRACY Turnout at Utah polls dwdles Contued from Page 1 Prciples compatible with gospel may be found platforms various political parties. Lack political diversity isn t only facr contributg Utah s low voter turnout. Most political scientists agree young voters are most politically active demographic, Beehive State isn t lackg young people. In 2010, Census Bureau reported Utah as youngest population nation. In that year, 16.5 percent Utah s population fell between ages 20 29, with a median age 29.2 years. When compared with or age groups, young adults between were well below curve turnout, fallg nearly 20 percent behd voters between ages Utah citizens between years age registered at a rate 67.7 percent. Of those who registered, 63.6 percent actually voted. Hadley Jarvis, a senior at BYU from Alpe, was eligible vote 2010 midterm election, but never registered. Jarvis said she has no plans for votg this year s election eir. It s not that I don t want, or that I don t care, Jarvis I just don t know enough about what s gog on. Jarvis isn t alone feelg unprepared, many young voters feel y aren t equipped make political decisions, but statistics show most simply aren t terested. Accordg a U.S. Census Bureau report entitled Votg Registration TODAY Election November 2008, 48.5 percent year olds who were not registered vote reported beg eir disterested election or politics general. The same report showed 21 percent registered nonvoters said y were simply o busy. Matw Shaw, a junior from Helena, Mont., started studyg at BYU 2008 said registerg vote Utah is simply an convenience. My family lives Montana, so that s where I claim residence, Shaw It s a hassle have get a new driver s license change my permanent address every time I move. Wher low turnout is an issue age, apathy, ignorance or competitiveness is unclear, but government i s t a k i n g steps improve voter turnout. In 2011 m u n i c i p a l e l e c t i o n, In 2011 municipal election, Provo had lowest turnout Utah County, when compared with or cities that reported voter registration statistics. UNIVERSITY DEVOTIONAL Tuesday, May 8, 11:05 a.m., de Jong Concert Hall Provo had lowest turnout Utah County when compared with or cities that reported voter registration statistics. Provo Mayor John Curtis said se elections are important because municipal leaders impact residents a greater way than state federal ficers. We are a very civic-mded people, but it doesn t translate votg, Curtis said, addg city is usg several ols improve voter turnout. Provo has used social media try spread formation about votg times locations, Curtis We have a web site that gives votg location, elected ficials, precct boundaries or important votg formation. In 2009, an effort improve turnout throughout state, former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. established Governor s Commission on Strengng Utah s Democracy. This commission, comprised Utah politicians public servants, was charged with studyg Utah s political atmosphere recommendg itiatives that could improve voter turnout. Some those recommendations are already beg enacted. T h e s t at e has made leaps bounds improvg voter registration process. Citizens are now able register vote onle at vote.utah.gov. This website makes it easy for citizens register for absentee votg learn more about votg Utah. The issue Utah s low voter turnout will not be solved over night, it will take time effort encourage voters return polls, but Jeremy Pope, pressor political science at BYU, said he believes lower turnout could mean voters are relatively satisfied with how government is runng. I don t mean that we should never worry about low turnout, Pope said, addg low turnout is a complex issue. High turnout is not an unambiguously good thg; low turnout is not necessarily a reason fear for safety republic. This devotional will also be broadcast JSB Audirium F201 HFAC. Utahns weigh on senate cidates By MEREDIT H FRANCOM For some, seeg differences between Republican cidates is like choosg between shades gray. For Jeff Stra, a local precct chair, this year s primary election was unique because so many great people were runng. The cidate pool gog this election is much better than it has been years past, Stra I like choosg between best best. Stra said he voted for former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist at state convention, not because he doesn t support Republican Sen. Orr Hatch, but because re were so many good cidates that it was time for a race. Hatch has not had a primary for 30 years, Stra To be fice this long not be so tated that you get called home is an achievement. Evelyn Call, communications direcr for Hatch campaign, said Hatch s longevity will enable him make changes needed turn nation around as head Senate Fance Committee. [Hatch] is only cidate this race who is a position actually achieve response this country needs get back on track, Call Stra, who has been highly volved politics for years, said he thks seniority can make representatives out uch with ir state, but Liljenquist s experience as a state senar will be an asset servg U.S. Senate. Liljenquist is energetic, Stra He has been good at consensus buildg with his own party he prioritizes well. Holly Richardson, manager for Liljenquist campaign, said his record as a State Senar speaks for itself. It s time trade out for someone with fresh ideas a way get re not just talkg pots, Richardson Stra said Hatch isn t as crisp as he once was. He is 78 years old, Stra He is slowg down. But as for primary election, Stra says he hasn t made up his md yet. I m still considerg both options. A lot depends on time frame that I thk we need have best cidate re, Stra If it s next two years, I ll vote for Hatch. If it s next four years, I don t know which one I ll vote for. If it s next six years, n I ll probably vote for Liljenquist. MOVIES Books can be big hits on film Contued from Page 9 less a chance submit ir own material watch it grow popularity simply because its origality. With slow destruction origal screenwritg, Getts explaed, screenwriters mselves have become terchangeable durg development process because y aren t fully vested. The vestment that is normally coupled with a screenwriter s own origal characters sry le doesn t lay foundation for a sry, thus results screenwriter s less-than-enthusiastic outlook take risks or try any dynamic srytellg. Origal material is more risky [] requires more development care, Getts Unfortunately, this has led an over-reliance on franchises, remakes conventional film makg. As America grows more vocally-opionated, Hollywood direcrs grow more cautious. The risk a br new sry is not as appealg as copyg a best-sellg book. A positive sp on movie-gog experience Many folks see trend as an spiration younger generation more readg. In Barbara Vey s Beyond Her Book blog, she explas It s a process, Gurr It s a four hour wait for an epic movie. You don t go for a useless movie but [ The Avengers ] is tally worth it. In one local ater norrn Provo, cheers erupted when lights dimmed someone near front began a shoutg countdown that filled ater. Gasps sounded followg stunng action sequences delivered by positive side many movies creatg bookworm s imagation on big screen. Sce this whole books movies books thg works, I say make even more good ones, Vey wrote. If kids need an addiction, let it be books I ll be an enabler. I hope schools wake up start payg attention by havg kids read books school that would make m enjoy readg. Vey s comments seem shadow rise book sales for featured movies. A few days after release The Hunger Games aters, Public Scholastic announced bestsellg trilogy showed a 55 percent crease sce begng 2012, leapg from 23.5 million copies prt 36.5 million copies prt. The Hunger Games trilogy has sod on The New York Time s best-seller list for a solid three years, with release movie, shows no sign disappearg anytime soon. A study by Nielsen Company shows that before release movie Harry Potter Deathly Hallows, Part One, Harry Potter book series jumped sales. Hollywood s antagonist, determed bookworm Though openg weekends such movies are filled with rabid fans, re is still much opposition evitable destruction book s name. You know what I m not dog night? tweeted Danny Duke from Salt Lake City. Gog Hunger Games. The only superheroes. Jonathan Webb, a junior studyg biophysics sported a Capta America costume. Best movie ever. book series/movie worth it my lifetime is [The Lord Rgs]. Duke s next tweet was along same les: That beg said, Harry Potter was a quality book series, but movies lacked a lot. LOTR crushed it. Trevor Ralph, a construction management major from Roswell, Ga., said he understs difficulty that comes with creatg a movie from an immensely popular book, even though movies ten aren t what he expected, he still enjoys watchg m. When you read books, you connect with characters you underst what y re gog through, Ralph In movies, a whole bunch detail a whole bunch emotion is left out. You just don t ga as much connection. Despite lack connection, Ralph said pressure please two different types audiences must be immense. Ralph claimed have been a member both parties: ones who read book before movie came out ones who read book after movie came out. I didn t start readg Harry Potter at first I watched movie first, Ralph That gave me a great vision what characters looked like, so when I read books, I had everythg planned out. The bad thg with The Hunger Games was that I read those books before, when I watched movies, a lot thgs were different. For stance, I pictured Pho by Chris Bunker Movie goers wait outside, some dressed costume, for midnight premieres The Avengers. Cornucopia gold, y made it a metallic gray. From his experience, Ralph said he does his best view situation from direcr s pot view. It s harder please people who have read book, it s hard match what y thk, Ralph said, that s probably why people have a hard time watchg movies, because y thk, well, that wasn t way I pictured it. You directed it this way, but I pictured it this or way. For most part, I thk direcrs do a really good job pleasg people that haven t read books, but see movie first. No end sight As now, re doesn t seem be an end franchise movies stemmg from books. The long-awaited release The Hunger Games movie presented preview for Stephanie Meyer s adult novel, The Host, now anor movie for bookworms anxiously wait for. And why should Hollywood sp its trend when it gives way so many positives? Eager acrs actresses, built- fan bases, boomg openg weekends, an author who s written out entire sry le. The only person who doesn t benefit is screenwriter, he or she would just mean more money. For most part, bookworms won t compla about opportunity see ir favorite book made a movie, even if y know plot will be butchered. Sarah Kron, a ater arts education major from Dubl, Ohio, said she believes book-movie trend will contue onward upward. I thk that re s a big enough fan base for most New York Times Bestsellers keep trend gog, Kron A lot movies that have been comg out lately that are origal scripts (more or less) haven t been as successful as booksturned-blockbusters. I m sure re will be screenwriters that will contue strive come out with good origal movies, but re s no doubt that big hits are big hits because y re already well-known, refore already have at least some kd fan base. Kron is more ten than not one first le for a movie created from one her favorite books. The best part about seeg book you love aters is fact that you are already love with sry, so you hope that movie will give you even more love about sry itself, Kron Plus, it s this sry you ve crafted your md as you read you get see it literally come life on big screen, with all kds crazy effects such. I love some extra stuff that screenwriters add movie, but only as long as y keep changes mimal don t change sry as a whole. Many bookworms respect movie busess its book-movie franchise, respect what Hollywood direcrs have deal with when y take on such a big project like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games or many ors. REVIEW Big action with big laughs Contued from Page 9 acr character, utilizg ir strengths while not compromisg ir unique quirks. You will laugh your head f more times here than you will most comedies this year. Not enough can be said about immensely talented cast. Robert Downey, Jr. once aga domates scene as Iron Man, providg most movie s best les. Chris Hemsworth s Thor is a much more human character this time around, Chris Evan s Capta America is appropriately corny, Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow plays Whedon s love for femme fatales this movie s version Hulk is perhaps most entertag version yet. Even Jeremy Renner shes with his limited screen time, provg once aga he is one Hollywood s best risg acrs. It is an credibly robust ensemble cast. However, I do have a few gripes with film. I did not like openg scenes at S.H.I.E.L.D. base, as y rushed lacked a proper build-up. I liked Loki better here than Thor, but he is still not a terribly timidatg villa his alien army could use more personality. And sadly, I did not like Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. He is not a bad acr, but he seemed be tryg o hard be mild mannered my opion. Noneless, this is a terrific film a great start for summer that everyone should go see. And before I forget, make sure you stay for both end credit scenes. The Avengers is rated PG-13 for tense sequences sci-fi violence action throughout, a mild drug reference. Now Deliverg!
