Leader s letter Dear St Augustine's, This is my last leader s letter. Nine months have flown by since I started covering for Joanna when she went on maternity leave in October I am grateful to everyone who has so warmly welcomed my family and I to Wrangthorn. It has been a steep learning curve but a great experience and I have appreciated all the support and help I have received, especially from Jim and Ann as Churchwardens, Che as Assistant Pastor and Judith in the office. Space does not permit me to thank everyone by name but I am grateful for all your encouragement and hope I get the opportunity to thank you all in person before I leave. It has been lovely to get to know everyone and I will miss you all! We have packed a lot into nine months bonfire night outreach, installing a new boiler, screen and projector in church, the joy of three baptisms, a school visit of year 1 children, the St. George s/wrangthorn joint choir at Christmas and Easter, welcoming new people to Sunday services, small groups, Sunday school trip to Jump Arena, improvements to the hall, Transforming Work course, English Classes, Bump and Babies, Parkrun hospitality and more. I have been so blessed and inspired by Wrangthorn s heart to engage with the community and I encourage you all to continue loving our neighbours in Hyde Park. There are times and seasons for everything and English classes have stopped due to a change in circumstances, but Community Changers, a discipleship group for 9-11 year olds run by Kidz Klub, has just started and we hope it will lead into a SPACE youth group led by Jack. On a practical note, we have submitted another Heritage Lottery Fund grant application and hope to start work on upgrading the church entrance over the summer. Continued on page 4 3
L e aders Letter Continued I will be returning to my curacy church, St. John s, Yeadon, for a final Sunday on 16 th July and a few weeks there before moving to Jersey at the beginning of August to take up my new post as Rector of St. John s, Jersey, in September. If you re ever in Jersey, do say hello! Joanna is back to work officially on 10 th July and her first Sunday back is 16 th July. I am grateful to Joanna for stepping back graciously during her maternity leave while being available for support and answering questions when needed. Finally, I encourage you to press on with God for Wrangthorn s vision: To be a place of welcome, warmth and worship where all can encounter God and from where we reach out with the love of God to those in our local community. God bless, Beverley Rev. Beverley Sproats SUNDAY: Children's Activities 10:30am Al-Anon: 6:15-7:45pm Church hall MONDAY: Community Changers 3:00-5:00pm AA: 7:30pm Tai Chi: 7-9pm TUESDAY Toddlers 10-11:30am Taekwondo 6:30-8:30pm WEDNESDAY Morning Prayer: 10-10:30am WEDNESDAY THURSDAY: FRIDAY: SATURDAY: continued Toddlers: Rainbows: 5-6pm Taekwondo: Al Anon: 10-11:30am Brownies: 11-1pm 7:30-9:30pm Taekwondo 6-7:15pm 5 Rhythms Dancing Heart: Unity 7-9pm 6:30-8:30pm Guides & Senior Section: 7-9pm 4 1pm-4pm AA: 7:30-9:30pm
As usual at this time of year, here are the amounts raised during the past year by the Talent Table at the back of the church. This money is used for small items, such as batteries for the microphones etc., and the rest of the money goes into the church accounts. Joanna as she prepares to return to Wrangthorn after maternity leave. Recent Heritage Lottery Fund application. 5
Beating the Parish Bounds Beating the bounds is an ancient custom whereby old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest and church officials, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands. You can Google it or look it up on Wikipedia. On Sunday July 2 nd we will be doing this to help us understand the size and varied nature of our parish, and therefore of our mission. How many of those in our congregation actually know how big the parish of Woodhouse and Wrangthorn is? This walk may open your eyes! Bring a picnic lunch and good walking shoes or trainers, and prepare for a walk of about 5 miles. The route heads up Cumberland Rd, down Woodhouse Ridge through woods to the Meanwood Road, where we cross the beck and follow a good track on the other side to Buslingthorp. At that point we can t exactly follow the boundary as there is no access; but we will head up Buslingthorp Lane to the Scott Hall Road, then down Sackville Street to the Meanwood Road; eventually up Cambridge St and Shay St to the University. From here we take Woodhouse Lane, then down Clarendon Road and along the edge of Woodhouse Moor to the Royal Park Pub, along Queens Road, Welton Road and up to Victoria Road then back to Cumberland Road where we started via Buckingham Road. Complicated? Not a bit! It s a great walk with a variety of residential and industrial areas, woods, tracks, steep hills (both up and down) full of interest. If you don t feel you can do the whole lot, talk to me about joining or leaving the other walkers at some convenient point. Jim Rowland 6
T H E P A R I S H O F W O O D H O U S E A N D W R A N G T H O R N DIVERSE that was the word that kept coming into my mind as I accompanied Jim on a recce of the beating the bounds of the parish walk. There is a surprising diversity, not just in the features but the lie of the land from ridge to valley. We passed through parkland, both formal (Woodhouse Moor) and informal (Meanwood Valley) and woodland (Woodhouse Ridge) where, in the latter cases, you could have imagined being deep in the countryside not only a few miles from the city centre! There was contrasting industry and shops and pubs. There were other churches and schools and of course the university buildings. But it was probably the extraordinary range of housing (with its inference of a great assortment of people) that was apparent from the university s student accommodation of older stone-built properties to modern, purpose-built properties, to other residential properties comprising of multi-storey or other high-rise flats, detached houses, through terrace houses and the back-to-backs, again built from a variety of materials including concrete, stone and the local red-brick. It was all very interesting. Our Vision To be a place of welcome, warmth and worship where all can encounter God and from where we reach out with the love of God to those in our local community. 7
