11 SUMMARY OF EXECUTIVE BOARD ACTIONS The following churches were gracious and hosted a 2008 Executive Board Meeting, welcoming all with brotherly love: Calvary, Carlisle, Corinth, and Covenant Fellowship. We sincerely thank you each church family and appreciate your opening God s house to host Stewart County Executive Board Meetings. During our January 2008 meeting, the main topic was selecting a speaker for Stewart Counties Tent Revival. The board selected Bro Don Mathis, Former President of the Kentucky Baptist Convention to speak. Also presented was the need for funding for the Stewart County Disaster Relief Program. These volunteers travel hundreds of miles with very little funding to do mission work during disasters. Their budget is minimal and desperately needs the support of the community, monetary and volunteers. April brought more requests for Disaster Relief as our team was called to several locations to assist. Their funds barely paid for the gas on one of the mission trips. All churches were asked to donate a minimum of $10.00 per month to aide the Disaster Relief program. David Young presented to the group information on the Safe House, which we currently share with three (3) other counties. It was suggested the county try to get funding for Stewart County and serve the local resident s needs. July brought talk at Corinth Baptist Church of the upcoming Mission Crusade and the Iowa Mission Trip. Each church was asked to have the pastor and one representative attend the meetings. Volunteers would be needed each night. September took us to Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church where the topic was Annual Church Profiles. A draft was handed out to each church for review with changes to be submitted immediately. The Annual Meeting is to be held October 16, 2008 at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, the meal at 5:00 p.m. and the program starting at 6:00 p.m. Submitted by: Dale Jackson Associational Clerk 2008 PRAYER MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORT PS. 126:3 THE LORD HATH DONE GREAT THINGS FOR US, WHEREOF WE ARE GLAD. 12 CHURCH MUSIC We as the Associational Music department workers desire to help you or your church in any area of music ministry that you may find need of help in. We also would like to encourage you to participate in the State training meeting offered by our State Church Music Department. The T.B.C. Church Music department schedules associational projects annually in additions to its ongoing programs of providing Summer Music Missionaries, Camps, Retreats, Conferences and other music opportunities. We will have another Music School next year if there is enough interest. As the churches in our association continue to gather in Christian Worship, we are reminded what the Psalmist wrote: Make His Praise Glorious. Submitted by, Russell Luffman Dir., Bro. William Gray, D.O.M. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 13 churches conducted VBS for a total enrollment of 903. I would like to thank all those in each church for the wonderful effort they have made in VBS. We are thankful to Loretta Taylor and her team that lead a great VBS clinic. Our theme for next year will be Boomerang Express. Submitted by, William Gray, DOM SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT We averaged 770 (decrease of 10) for this associational year. Our S.S. enrollment is 1249(an decrease of 26). GOALS 1. To encourage each church to take part in the Associational Sunday School Training. 2. To reach 1,000 in Sunday School on S.O.S. Sunday (High Attendance Day). Submitted by, William Gray, DOM EVANGELISM The churches in our Association for the year reported 104 baptisms (decrease of 25). There were 62(decrease of 21) members received by letter and statement. The total decisions by baptisms, letter, and statements were 166. Our Cluster Revivals was a great success. All pastors and churches were encouraged. We had seven churches reporting no baptisms. We encourage that each church observe or attend the following: 1. Soul-Winning Commitment Day. 2. The State Evangelism Conference. 3. The Association Evangelism conference. 4. Youth Evangelism Conference in Nashville. 5. Conduct witnessing training. To encourage and assist TN. Baptist to communicate personally the gospel to every person in TN. Submitted by, William Gray, DOM DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING REPORT The Association Discipleship Training Program serves the churches through its effort to satisfy at least four needs: 1. More meaningful Christian fellowship. 2. Increased spiritual motivation. 3. Better understanding of Discipleship Training. 4. Greater involvement in shared experiences. The Association has an opportunity to help churches accomplish these training tasks: training new church members, training church leaders, and training church members. Training is still done in the majority of our churches on Sunday nights as ongoing training in small groups by ages using pre-graded materials, but it is being expanded more and more to other approaches using Equipping Centers, New Member Training, Masterlife and Disciple Youth, Individual Training, Study Course Books and Baptist Doctrine Study. We assist churches in all areas of training and believe our task is to see all church members following Christ in discipleship. All church members disciplined to their full potential is exactly what Jesus told us to do in Mt. 28:19-20, As you go make disciples...and teach them to do (observe). To accomplish this goal we will work towards the following objectives in the coming year: 1. Lead our churches to provide new member training. 2. Encourage members from each church to attend M Night. (A Goal of 100 in attendance). 3. Encourage members from each church to participate in our Associational D.T. Program. 4. Promote participation in the Church Study Course, and Life Programs. 5. To strive for 100% of churches in the association with a Discipleship Training program. Submitted by, William Gray, DOM 10

14 MID-CONTINENT UNIVERSITY ANNUAL REPORT TO THE BAPTIST ASSOCIATIONS July 31, 2008 This has been a banner year for your university. The Lord blessed us with 1,895 students, our largest enrollment ever and we once again completed our fiscal year in the black. I believe our brightest days lie ahead as God continues to bless MCU. The following briefs were prepared by our various divisions and departments. The Baptist College of the Bible Update By the numbers Mid-Continent University is keeping faith with our mission. Twelve students graduated with ministry degrees during the year. The College of the Bible also provided 12 hours of college credit for the 44 graduates of the traditional programs, 6 hours of college credit for the 130 graduates who received the Associates Degree, and 15 hours of college credit for those receiving the Business degree in the Advantage program. Our Teleos program began with 21 students enrolled. A second cohort is planned to begin in September. These students are working toward a Bachelor of Ministry or a Bachelor in Christian Ministry. These are ministry degrees taught in the Advantage format We are forming a College of the Bible Advisory Council selected during the fall of 2008 to work with the faculty and staff to promote the influence and development of the College of the Bible. The Global Mission Center has conducted mission trips to Antigua under the direction of Dr. Cecil and Paul McGinnis. There were also mission trips to Arizona to work with Native Americans during the Christmas and summer breaks. We offered our first ever Defenders of the Faith camp and conference for youth pastors and youth groups this summer. Trace Creek Baptist Church located in Symsonia, KY worked with MCU to make this event a success. Look for more in the future. Plans are being made now for the 2009 Mid-Continent Regional Bi-vocational Celebration at the Heartland Worship Center March Lastly, Dr. Larry Orange is our Acting Dean of the Baptist College of the Bible and is joined by new hire, C.J. Turner as Instructor. The Baptist College of Arts & Science Work continues on numerous SACS accreditation submissions including a level change for a Master s Degree in Business Management. In May a consultant was hired to assist the University in preparing for our submission. In the last reporting year Mid-Continent University has scored significant gains in the University retention rate. In higher education the retention rate measures the degree that first-time, first year freshmen return for the sophomore year. In the last year the retention rate increased from 58% to 63%. This is the highest retention rate ever recorded in the history of Mid-Continent. This rate is nearing the national average at just a little fewer than 70%. Also in the last reporting year, Mid-Continent University has achieved a gain in the overall graduation rate of the university from 13% to 19%. This measures the degree that first-time, first year students make it to graduation. Students are allowed up to six years to graduate. This gain is one of the largest gains in the graduation rate that Mid-Continent has achieved. We regretfully accepted the resignations of Ms. Lovie Palin, Dr. Janet Jones, and Dr. Frank Luo. All of them, however, will still teach some adjunct courses for us. We have hired Mr. Nathanael Bazzell in History. Mid-Continent also plans to make full-time hires in the areas of Economics/Finance, Management, and Marketing. For the second year in a row, the institution met its goal of collecting/acquiring 1,000 hard copy books for the Library. We have also increased the number of hard copy academic journals from 15 to 21 in the previous year. Mid-Continent s online book holdings are over one-billion books. The Division of Finance & Administration We completed construction of the Faculty Hall building, a structure of approximately 2600 square feet consisting of 11 offices with the option of conversion to student housing. Also we completed a large scale remodeling of the library. The Computer Services Office installed high-speed Internet service campus wide, which will provide 12

15 connections for staff, faculty and students. The Advantage Adult Program Since Advantage began, we have started 190 groups and graduated 127 groups. This past spring Advantage enrollment was at This past fiscal year we have added the new locations of Lebanon, Frankfort, Owensboro, and another Teleos Program. In addition, we expect to add Leitchfield this summer and Covington and London this fall. Last year was our highest number of applications with 1097 applications, and the Advantage Program grew 43% this past year. The Advancement Office Mrs. Donna Babcock will be joining the staff as Director of Alumni Affairs in August. She will be working very hard to build our alumni base and keep all alumni informed on current events taking place at Mid-Continent. The Alumni office is trying to update all information on our mailing list. If any of your church information has changed over the past year, please contact or x. 248 We are now publishing quarterly, full color newsletters. If you have any information you would like to submit or have a story you would like to tell, please contact lbutler@midcontinent.edu or x. 351 REMINDER!! Mid-Continent University will be one of the lead sponsors for BBQ on the River this year in Paducah. Please come down and see us at our booth on the corner of Broadway and Water Street! Come show your support for MCU! Athletic Department Highlights More than 10 student athletes made first time commitments for Christ TranSouth Athletic Conference Tournament Champions - Men's Soccer 2007 NAIA Region XII Champions - Men's Soccer 2007 NAIA National Tournament - "Sweet Sixteen" round Men's Soccer 2007 NCCAA Mid-East Region Champions-Women's Softball (National Christian College) Two teams qualified for their respective NCCAA National Championship Tournaments (Women's Basketball & Softball). Athletic Recruiting numbers reached all-time high with more than 180 athletes registered for fall semester. Baseball Field--field work completed (laser graded, new irrigation system, new turf, etc) Student Development The spiritual focus on campus during the past school year was one that challenged students to, Run the race with perseverance, choosing to be holy. Throughout the year, that theme was continually reinforced and developed. As the year progressed many students realized that making that kind of a commitment has a tendency to draw spiritual attacks from the enemy. It was interesting to see how college aged students responded to those attacks. The experience was also one that allowed MCU faculty and staff to evaluate how we can better prepare our students for the spiritual warfare they encounter during their college years, and also how we can best equip them for spiritual battles they will face throughout their lives. MCU produced a major public awareness campaign geared toward high school and college age students. Many prospective students want to attend a university that provides a Christian focus and atmosphere. In the Western Kentucky area, we are the best option, yet many students don t think of us as a serious choice. The purchase of the MCU Hummer and the implementation of many on campus visit opportunities have given students in this area a better picture of who we are and what we have to offer the year old prospective student. MCU is a great choice for a Christian young adult seeking a small college environment at a university that believes that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God and Genesis 1 is real. 13

16 Tennessee Missions and Ministry Report We are living in a time of great challenge. Three of these challenges are: Reaching people drowning in the culture we live in for Christ. Calling out the called to be leaders in the church. Financing adequately for the mission mandate of taking the gospel to all people. The Evangelism Team of the State Missions staff has been working on an evangelism strategy to call all Tennessee Baptists to be involved in reaching Tennessee with the Gospel. While the team began its journey toward this strategy over a year ago, we are excited to see how God was at work as the new Southern Baptist Convention strategy: GPS God s Plan for Sharing fits like a hand in a glove with the team s strategy. This strategy will be shared at this year s Annual Meeting of Tennessee Baptists at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville. In 2009, we are calling all Tennessee Baptists to unite together as we have never before in Praying for the Harvest. At last year s Annual Meeting, the Convention received a report from the Relational Strategic Study Committee. This report called for a greater emphasis on working with young leaders in our Convention. As we began to examine this situation by calling on our Church Staff Affinity Team to give some direction, they discovered a statistic that should call all of us to concern: Only 10% of Tennessee Baptist churches are pastored by someone less than 35 years of age. We plead for a diligent emphasis in Calling out the Called by present leadership. Furthermore, that those of us in leadership positions begin to find young leaders in order to mentor the next generation of vocational and lay leaders in our churches. This year has brought financial challenges to us all and the support of missions is not immune. In the midst of all of this, the State Missions staff is very thankful for the continued support of the Cooperative Program and the record giving to the Golden Offering for Tennessee Missions. We exceeded the goal of $1,640,000. In order to strengthen the financial support of the local church and the Cooperative Program, we have launched a stewardship and Cooperative Program campaign, Ten x Ten in Tennessee - a call for every member to give at least a tithe, and for every church to give at least 10 percent through the Cooperative Program. This campaign is being conducted through our associational ministers over the next three years. Be looking for this associational ministry to come to your area in the next three years, and please be involved prayerfully for this endeavor. A final word is that with the end of this year, we will be closing our partnership with Rio de Janiero. Over the 10 years of the partnership, 5,000+ volunteers have served. Thank you to all. As a result, we will begin a new partnership with West Africa. Prior to the Convention, we will host a West Africa Summit at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, on November 5 7. For details, go to James Porch, Executive Director-Treasurer 14
