You may have been called to serve in a ward or branch where Spanish or Portuguese is spoken. Of the 180 wards and branches in the mission, 60 are Spanish speaking and three speak Portuguese. Many of the other English-speaking wards and branches in the mission also have members who are immigrants from Latin America where English is their second language. It is a privilege to serve with these Latin saints and feel of the spirit and their conviction to the gospel. You will find this to be a deep and meaningful experience and a true blessing. Our goal is to work with one to three of these member families (or individuals) at any one time and help them move toward greater self-reliance. A couple of thoughts, principles, and other information: We always work under the direction of the Bishop/Branch President We want the Bishop/Branch President to invite you to attend ward council each week. We don t want you to take callings in your ward or branch (your calling is different) A goal 25% of your time on welfare matters 75 % on self-reliance. There are many community programs you can reach out to Storehouse of Specialists. Some community resources are not available to undocumented members. There are programs unique to the Latin community. Fundet Scholarships are available to Latins through SL Comm College (Hector Cando). BYU-Idaho Pathway could be a perfect opportunity for a Latin member. Onward2success.org scholarships are available to the Latin saints (The Gaertners). Attend the workshops to learn what is offered. Bring members to the workshops (they are all open to members and non-members) We do not ask the documentation status of those we serve. Don t order Spanish/Portuguese name tags You will get a second set from the mission

SELF-RELIANCE FOR HISPANIC UNITS SPECIALTY AREAS SELF-EMPLOYMENT Small business enterprises, initiated by Latino saints, can provide a livelihood for talented, dedicated, and resourceful individuals. Self-employment Specialists provide information, training, and the process necessary to open and operate a small business. After learning the initial skill set to start an enterprise, participants are pointed to the services, support, connections, and additional expertise for their enterprise to thrive. Their presentation outlines these services. FAMILY FINANCES Families become financially selfreliant as they apply sound principles of money management. Family Finance Specialists will offer a practical hands on series of workshops that deal with budgeting, saving, living within your means, and reducing and avoiding debt. MISSION Welfare Service Missionaries are available to help Spanish speaking units in five self-reliance areas. Missionaries are encouraged to work with their Bishop to find families that can benefit from the following speciality areas. 6 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) Learning English is essential to succeed in all self-reliance areas. English classes are taught by missionaries in various branches throughout the mission. Your members are invited to attend any of these classes. Elder and Hermana Duffy are happy to come to your ward or branch and help motivate members to learn English. They are happy to train teachers, and to suggest classes where members can learn the language. EDUCATION (Professional Development and College Preparation) The Gaertners assist young people and adults to increase their education and processional skills in their current or desired career. They are the lead specialists over all educational resources that include professional development, early education, and college access/preparation. They can provide fifth Sunday or combined Priesthood/Relief Society branch presentations to all hispanic units in coordination with the missionaries assigned to that branch. EARLY EDUCATION Parental involvement and leadership in children s education will lead to success in school. The Pluases will host seminars focused on how parents can better assist their children to be successful in school, how to access parent and student web portals, and develop reading skills. They also emphasize spiritual aspects of learning. Missionaries are encouraged to work with their Bishop/Branch President to help him decide when, who, and how to share these valuable resources. 7 Branch Self-Reliance Music / Keyboarding Stakes are encouraged to call a Music Leader to teach simplified hymns to Members of Spanish units. Missionaries work with an Inner City Keyboarding Specialist to provide support for the Stake Music Leader. Through a grant, simple keyboards are made available. Scouting Stakes are encouraged to call a Scouting Mentor to give scouting support in branches that would like to build the scout troop. Inner City Scouting Specialists support the Scouting Mentor.

Specialists for Salt Lake Inner-City Mission (ICM) Latin Units The Goal - Each inner-city service missionary focuses on one to three individuals or families (as assigned by the Branch President or Bishop) and mentors them to greater self-reliance. Bi-Monthly Hispanic Missionary At the beginning of each month you will receive an that provides important information. Attached will be an Announcement sheet that you should copy and provide to the members of your branch. The will also provide you with important dates and locations of meetings and workshops. Please read this as soon as you receive it and pass the information on to your priesthood leaders and members. Self-Reliant Mentoring Process: Once individuals or families have been identified under the direction of priesthood leaders, missionaries should conduct a Self-Reliant Assessment with these families to determine their current situation. Several tools that may be helpful in conducting this assessment are My Path and My Foundation booklets. The My Path booklet contains an excellent outline for assessing where the family is today in spiritual and temporal self-reliance. Once the assessment has been completed the missionaries should assist the family in prioritizing the action steps to self-reliance and mentor the family in developing a written self-reliance plan. Once the written self-reliance plan is complete, the missionaries should establish weekly and monthly goals to be achieved by the family. The missionaries should meet frequently with the family to assist them in achieving their goals and to report back to priesthood leaders on progress made. These goals could include: 1. Preparing for the temple 2. Improving English skills 3. Advancing education 4. Increasing daily personal prayer or scripture study 5. Professional development specific to current or future employment 6. Self-employment development 7. Paying a full tithe 8. Increasing the education skills of children or young adults in the home 9. Development of a personal budget and financial plan 10. Accepting callings in the branch The Inner-city Mission has identified seven important areas of temporal self-reliance to assist missionaries. In addition to promoting community resources the Inner-city Mission has seven Specialists over each of these areas.

English Classes: Matt and Robin Duffy English Classes are taught two nights a week to the Hispanic Community at separate locations around the valley. Both beginning and intermediate ESL classes are taught. You can work with the Duffys and with your lead couple and even combine with another ward or branch to start a class. A number of wards and branches have expressed interest in having their own ESL classes each week. These classes are taught by a member of the branch or missionaries. The Duffy s provide teach training and the curriculum for anyone interested. Education (Professional Development and College Preparation): Gilbert and Sheila Gaertner gaertnerg@ldschurch.org Professional Development To assist young people and adults to increase their education and professional skills in their current or desired career. The Gaertner s are the lead Specialist over all educational resources that include professional development, Scholarships, Oward2Success, Fundet, BYU-Idaho Pathway, Access & Preparation to all education resources. They can provide fifth Sunday or combined priesthood/relief society branch presentations to all Hispanic units under the direction of the missionaries assigned to that branch. info@onward2success.com They specifically assist primarily Juniors and Seniors in High School or adults seeking higher education advancement there are two workshops offered (taught Sunday nights). These workshops are held at the SLCC Redwood Institute. These workshops are approximately two hours and are repeated at least twice annually. These workshops teach important skills and preparation for students wanting to go to college, trade schools or junior colleges. There is an abundance of information and educational resources on the website listed above. Those that attend and complete the requirements can become eligible for scholarships provided through Two important websites: onward2success.org A community scholarship fund where students can apply and donations can be made. Mypathtoeducation.org- This will give you background on the education, early education, and ESL resources in the mission. This where young people can register for workshops on Education. Early Education Arnaldo and Ileana Pluas Arnaldob_52@hotmail.com Fifth Sunday and combined priesthood/relief society presentations are given to explain a series of four Family Home Evening lessons that have been developed. These lessons teach the importance of education to elementary through high school students. The focus is on helping

parents develop a culture of learning in their home. Principals are taught concerning how to monitor homework, tracking grades on the school website, communicating with teachers in a new culture, developing good study habits, establishing goals and the importance of attending parent teacher conferences. Self-Employment Workshops Mimi and Roger Beattie roger@rogerbeattie.com Each quarter there are three four-hour workshops (on successive Saturday mornings) are offered at the SLCC Redwood Road Institute. These workshops are taught in Spanish and copies of the presentation are handed out in English for those that do not speak Spanish. These workshops are designed to assist members who want to be self-employed. The members need to come with a business idea they would like to pursue. The workshops will help them discover if the business idea has financial merit and how to develop a business plan. It will educate them on how to establish the legal business entity, skills and tools they will need and introduce them to community resources that can help them be successful. The workshop includes a presentation by the Pete Suazo Company a non-profit organization that specifically focuses on the Hispanic community. The workshop is repeated four times each year. Family Finance Workshops Shelly and Dave Leatham Leatham6@msn.com These workshops are critical for all families. These two-hour workshops (taught on two successive Sunday nights) are offered at various Institute and Seminary buildings around the Salt Lake valley (mostly at SLCC/Redwood). These workshops are held quarterly and are taught in Spanish with copies of the presentation provided in English. The workshops are designed to teach very basic skills of money management, how to develop and live on a budget, getting and staying out of debt, and other critical financial planning principals. The Leathams are also available to provide fifth Sunday and joint priesthood/relief society presentations to encourage members to attend the workshops. Piano Teacher Instruction Lorraine Dahl Ldahl_6@msn.com This is a Teach the Teacher piano instruction. Teachers (mostly missionaries) use an approach (Toca Bien) to teach new piano students. Toca Bien is focused on helping non-piano players succeed in playing simplified hymns in sacrament meetings. This teacher training is particularly important for units with no music resources. The training is held quarterly at the Brookshire chapel (3487 South 1300 East).

Getting Started - Ideas from the inner-city missionaries on ways to break the ice and earn the confidence of members and leaders in wards and branches. *Greet members as they enter the chapel for Sacrament Meeting. *Learn their names and greet them by name. *Went to a ward member s wedding (sealing) and attended a wonderful cultural celebration that evening. *Sang in the new ward choir with several ward members and the Relief Society President who is the choir director. *Participated in service projects. *Helped to form and participate in a ward choir. *Look for opportunities to serve: furniture, dental, immigration, health care, education and employment. *Be consistent. *Greet the members. Give a kiss on the cheek, especially sister to sister. *Attended youth baptisms for the dead. *Attend Craft night for sister s enrichment. *Teach Relief Society lesson on self-reliance. *Have Family Home Evenings with families in the branch/ward. *I teach piano lessons to 10 branch members and they became my best friends in a few short weeks! My husband and I greet each branch member as they arrive the Latin way with an embrace and kiss. * Attend all parties and participate. Dancing, bringing authentic food. * Bring food and attend linger-longers. * Speak in Sacrament Meeting * Attend Service projects. * Do not wait to be introduced, start shaking hands. * Make friends with the bishop. * We have attended the school plays, athletic games and other youth junior high and high school activities of our branch youth members. Meet and encourage juniors and seniors in high school to participate in ECB workshops in preparation for college and to obtain scholarships. * The first day of my mission at our new ward I wrote down the name of each person I met and learned a little about them. The following Sunday, I brought cards with a thank you for making us feel welcomed. I included a hug as I handed them to each one. * Meet with and help ward leaders. * Ask members to teach you something they know how to do. * Self-deprecating humor. * Teach piano, primary - individual interaction. * Teach nutrition classes.

* Helped with repairs on a house. * Sit with members at meetings rather than with other missionaries. * Help with music, especially training others to be able to lead, etc. * Taught English personally to them in their homes. * Visited personally in their homes and asked if we could do anything for them. * Took treats to them at their homes. * Speak to them individually in their language, even a word or two in Spanish opens hearts and homes. * Support and encourage them in their trials and successes. * Find out about their children and attend their activities. We ve been to school programs, athletic contests and plays. * Offer rides. * Just listen. * We asked for a branch/ward member list with birthdays and began with the current month. With a small card and a piece of chocolate or taffy, we asked if the birthday person was attending that day and went to wish them a happy birthday. * Take the RS President, Elders President and HP Group Leader to dinner and get to know them as friends. Ask them what you can do to be of help. * Meet with branch president and express love and how you feel it is a privilege to serve-- then ask who you can help.this can be done on multiple occasions and with the Bishop and other leaders. * Teach the young adult Sunday school class. * Remember their names and some details about them. * Help the young men and women to prepare to serve missions. * The time and conversations in the car taking them to appointments develops close relationships. * Begin a conversation by asking about their children. (I got to hold an adorable new baby last Sunday). * I took extra garden produce to Relief Society, the sisters were so grateful!! * Have a great smile. * Work with the specialists and accompany the members to the work shops. * Be patient. * Be visible - All meetings, parties, RS activities, move ins, move outs, activities, camp-outs. * Do your best to learn Spanish and greet them in Spanish. Learn the hymns in Spanish. * Spend time before and after meetings just visiting with members. * Just say hello and be forward and positive in ward council. * Teach classes: employment, self-reliance. * Help clean the chapel. * Take treats to ward council. * Give rides and participate in ESL classes. * Be patient, it will come. * Service softens hearts. As we have served individuals, we have gotten to know them better and developed a connection.

* Pray before attending church to be directed to know who is in need of a listening ear. * Discuss with leadership our mission emphasis to help them understand ways we can help. * Pray and listen for answers of who needs a hug or smile and then respond to prompting. * Ask their country of origin. * Determine their english skill set. * Volunteer to do splits with home teachers, visiting teachers and full time missionaries. * Share a talent. * Don t be shy. * Give a compliment. * Use the goods specialist to find needed items for ward members. * Go to Spanish sessions at the temple with members. * Organize youth athletic events. * Bake cookies or brownies and share with them. * Go on campouts with the ward or branch. * Encourage them to speak English. Do you speak English? I don t speak Spanish. * We have always asked for their help in correcting us and teaching us to speak good/correct Spanish. * We have always pay attention to the youngest members. * We show up and ask what would you like us to do? We greet at the door. We accept opportunities to pray in Spanish All efforts are appreciated. * Be there early before meetings, smile, make eye contact, say hola. * Connect with the primary children and you will get to know their parents. * Compliment members for their role in meetings. Genuine compliments. * Sign up to help with dinners. * Go to everything- baby showers, parties, etc. * Volunteer to teach them to cook something good from your culture. Have them come to your home to learn. Ask a member if they would teach you to make one of their cultural dishes. * Tutor those in your ward/branch in reading, writing, math, etc. Find out which youth have trouble in subjects you know and understand and help them to bring up their grades. * Find all the four year olds in your ward and help their parents sign them up for Upstart ( a reading, language and kindergarten readiness program offered free from the Waterford school). * Use your own unique talents and abilities the Lord has blessed you with to lighten the load or help others in your ward or branch to become more self-reliant. * Respect privacy and honor trusts. * There is no language barrier to love. We feel that these are all great ideas and would certainly be of great help as you get started in your wards and branches. Those who are already well into their missionary service may be inspired to try something new as they continue to serve. Thank you for your insights!

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Statement OFFICIAL STATEMENT 26 JANUARY SALT LAKE CITY The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued the following statement regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA): The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is established in 188 nations around the globe. Issues of immigration and legal status are of concern for many of our members. Most of our early Church members emigrated from foreign lands to live, work and worship, blessed by the freedoms and opportunities offered in this great nation. Immigration is a complex and sometimes divisive issue. As we have stated before, we believe that our first priority is to love and care for one another as Jesus Christ taught. Each nation must determine and administer its policies related to immigration. The Church does not advocate any specific legislative or executive solution. Our hope is that, in whatever solution emerges, there is provision for strengthening families and keeping them together. We also acknowledge that every nation has the right to enforce its laws and secure its borders and that all persons subject to a nation's laws are accountable for their acts in relation to them. We welcome the sincere efforts of lawmakers and leaders to seek for solutions that honor these principles and extend compassion to those seeking a better life. Specifically, we call upon our national leaders to create policies that provide hope and opportunities for those, sometimes referred to as Dreamers, who grew up here from a young age and for whom this country is their home. They have built lives, pursued educational opportunities and been employed for years based on the policies that were in place. These individuals have demonstrated a capacity to serve and contribute positively in our society, and we believe they should be granted the opportunity to continue to do so. 12-8
