1 Bulletin Junior Alert: It s Time to Plan for Interscholastic Star Since the Arkansas Activities Association s creation of the Arkansas Interscholastic Star program in the school year, Arkansas high schools have selected over close to 2,000 outstanding young people as the individual in that year s eleventh grade class who best exemplifies the criteria described by the Three A s of the Interscholastic Star program. These criteria are: * Active involvement in school activities and community service * Adaptability to meet challenging situations with courage, perseverance and commitment, and an * Attitude of cooperation, dependability and application of interpersonal skills. Since the program began, 23 outstanding young people have been named to serve as the representative for school activities programs and the values found in them. These students were named locally to represent various schools in every area of the state. Past Interscholastic Star selections and their schools are: 1993 Traci Thomas, Arkadelphia High School 1994 Ashley Ethridge, Batesville High School 1995 Lindsey Thomas, Weiner High School 1996 David Bethea, Hampton High School 1997 Amanda Russell, Sheridan High School 1998 Mandy Mitchell, Murfreesboro High School 1999 Penney Berryman, Bentonville High School 2000 Jenny Phillips, Camden Harmony Grove High School 2001 Allen Dunn, Hampton High School 2002 Stephen Coger, Danville High School 2003 Natasha Blair Armstrong, Timbo High School 2004 James Scott Cordova, Pulaski Oak Grove High School 2005 Meredith Lyndsey McVay, Nettleton High School 2006 Brett Foster, Greenland High School 2007 Rachel Purtee, Jonesboro High School 2008 Temple Price, Little Rock Hall High School 2009 Cori Mauk, Nashville High School 2010 Shayna W. Boyster, Newport High School 2011 Jacob Lee, Springdale Har-Ber High School 2012 Madison Covington, Siloam Springs 2013 Brandon Lercher, Beebe 2014 Shanae Snow, Cave City Matthew Means, Little Rock Central November The schools that selected their own Interscholastic Stars in the school year are using these students in a number of ways to highlight the student activities programs. These students continue to extol the values found through participation in interscholastic activities such as athletics, choir, band, speech/debate, academic honor organizations, FBLA, FHA, spirit groups and others. They are involved in assemblies, parades, community relations, mentoring, service projects and sportsmanship promotions to name just a few. These students are excellent role models for others to emulate. Now is the time to be planning for your school s selection of an Interscholastic Star, currently a junior, to function in these capacities and more, as well as having their selection form submitted to the AAA for consideration for statewide honors. Selection forms will be available on the AAA s website at If your school has not selected an Interscholastic Star in the past, this year is a good time to begin. Not only does your Interscholastic Star serve as a very visible example of the good things your school activities program has to offer, but the student may become a finalist in the statewide selection and be the recipient of a scholarship for future use. The student selected as Arkansas Interscholastic Star will be given a $1,000 reward and the runner-up will receive a $500 reward. The other three finalists will receive a $300 reward. So, get set be ready! Your selection committee can be formed now and begin to consider the eleventh grade students in order to select that outstanding young man or woman who best meets the criteria of the Three A s and will be named the school s Interscholastic Star. Centennial Bank is the Titled Named Sponsor of AAA championship awards. State Farm Insurance is the sponsor of AAA championship awards. 1
