Klock Part 1 Generation No JOHANNES J. 2 KLOCK (HENDRICK 1 ) was born October 30, 1711 in West Camp, Columbia, New York, and died Aft in St. Johnsville, Montgomery Cty. New York. He married ANN MARGARETHA FUCHS 1737, daughter of JOHN FOX and ANNA CAST. She was born December 02, 1712 in Somerset, N.J., and died January 14, 1800 in St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co. N.Y.. Notes for JOHANNES J. KLOCK: Johannes Klock was born Oct. 30, Johannes Klock died after 1787 as he transfered his land to his son John J. Klock on May 1, Tryon County Deeds, Page 479 in Fonda County Deeds Office. SOK Genealogy & Klock/Clock Genealogy Johannes Klock ( No 3 ) born Oct 30, 1711, died prior to 1800, married Anna Margaret Fox, born Jan 3, 1713, died Jan 14, She was the daughter of William Fox Sr. and Anna Margaret Cast. The burial place of Johannes is unknown, also the date of his death, but as his wife, Anna Margaret, died January the 14th 1800, is called his "widow" at the time of her death, it is evident that he died before that date. Anna Margaret, his wife, is buried in the old Klock Church Burial ground, and no doubt Johannes is also buried there. Johannes Klock was the proprietor of "Old Fort Klock" and its adjacent acres; having come into possession of the land between the years 1740 and 1750, he is credited with the building the stone dwelling which became known during the Revolution, as "Fort Klock". Built in 1750 it was a grim and silent witness to the raids of the French and Indian who swooped down from Canada, and terrorized the Mohawk valley during the French and Indian War. In the Revolution it was a place of refuge for the nearby settlers, when Sir John Johnson, the Butlers, John and Walter, father and son, and Joseph Brant, the Indian chieftain, ravished the fair valley of the Mohawk with their painted followers, both white and red, and left it in desolate ruins. Much of the way of tradition has been handed down about this quaint old stone building which has been in possession of some member of the Klock family since the date of its inception. Built with the native limestone found on the farm, it stands on a solid rock foundation, and has withstood the ravages of time, as well as those of two internecine wars. From its cellar floor of solid rock bubbles a spring of cold clear water, which no doubt allayed the thirst of those confined with in its walls in time of siege, or soothed the feverish brow of those wounded in battle. In a small room, in the southeast corner of the cellar, is where prisoners were confined during the

2 revolutionary war, and around its walls of stone, up from the floor some sixteen inches, runs a stone bench, on which those confined either sat or slept. Since those perilous times, its portholes, thru which were fired the deadly missiles that kept their painted adversaries at a respectful distance, have been enlarged, and windows, thru which the warm and peaceful sunlight streams, have taken their place. Its interior has underwent some change, its huge stone fire place has been removed, and several rooms have been partitioned off, but the rafters, joists, and sills are those first used in its construction, and bear the axe marks of the hardy men who hewed them. It is one of the oldest buildings, representing Colonial days, to be found in the upper Mohawk valley, and with care and attention will stand for many years to come, a mute reminder of those perilous times that tried the souls of men, and women too, and established for us who followed, an independence wrought by the of our fore fathers. From its portals, six generations of Klocks have come and went, within its walls merriment, and sorrow have been felt, and even tragedy was not unknown, for from it went one morning supposedly to engage in the labor of the farm, John Devendorf the husband of Catherine Klock, the daughter of John J. Klock and Catherine Fults, and grand daughter of Johannes who built the "Old Fort". He never returned. The wife and children awaited his coming at noon and night, but never again did their eyes rest upon him. Some how and somewhere, he passed into that great beyond, but how or where was never known. Tragedy and mystery is written there. Johannes Klock, in all probability, had more children that those named. Born in the latter part of the year 1711, and marrying at the accustomed age of twenty or twenty five years, we have a lapse of at least four years before the birth of John J., which occurred in 1741, who, at his name would seem to indicate, was the first male child born, to reach mature years. It will be noted that there is no female child named for the mother, Anna Margaret, and so we are inclined to the belief there were at least two children born prior to the year Time may disclose their identity, and space will be left to record their names under the list of names of the children of Johannes, which follows on the next page. Klock lived on a farm a mile or more to the east of St. Johnsville, N.Y., on a road leading north from the turnpike, Jacob I. is buried by himself by the side of this road, and but a short distance from their old homestead. Anna G. is buried in the old Klock burial ground near where the church stood in earley days. Jacob was a member in the regiment of Col. Jacob Klock, and was at the battle of Oriskany. Simms the historian states that he was shot near or at Whites Creek by an enemy and that his horse turned and ran. But he does not say that Jacob did not regain control of the animal and return to his batallion. Jacob I. is said to have become disaffected during the last stages of the war, and joined a number of others who fled to Canada to unite with the British cause. There may have been a reason for his doing that, far different than the reason for the act would imply. What ever the truth may be his land was not confisicated, nor does his neighbors seem to have borne him any ill will. SOK Notes for ANNA G. KLOCK: Anna G. 8 Notes for HENRICK JOHANNES KLOCK: Henrick was known as Henry. He was a soldier in the Revolution in Col. Jacob Klock's Reg. of the 2 nd. Tyron County, New York state Militia. He owned 2 farms in Little Falls, New York. He was a director of the Octagon Church, the first church erected in Little Falls. He is buried on his farm about 2.5 miles west of Little Falls, New York. From the Family Tree of Jackie Zimmer, Az. Henry J. ( Sometimes written as Henry I. ) Klock was a member ot the regiment commanded by Col. Jacob Klock, and was a loyal patriot during the Revolution. After the war he located on a farm to the west of Little Falls, N.Y., which comprised several hundred acres, and later was divided into two. This land lay on either side of the present Mohawk valley turnpike, and contained much of the valley flat land. One of these at one time lived Silas Klock his grandson, and on the other lived another grand son, Elias. This farm has never been out of the possesion of some member of the family, and at present is owned by George Klock. He was a member of the building committee which built the old octagon church which stood where the brick school house now stands (1930), on Church street at Little Falls, N.Y. He was buried in the old cemetery at Herkimer where now is located Myres Park, and when the remains of those intered there were removed to Oak Hill cemetery, his were removed to that place. The original white stone marker which first marked his burial place, now stands there with this inscription. "Henry Klock a soldier in the Revolution, born in Palatine, Aug. 7, 1749, died in Herkimer June 10, 1810." His wife Margaret, who survived him twenty six years, is buried in the Church Street cemetery at Little Falls. SOK Genealogy. He died in He served as a sergeant in Captain John Lafler's Company of Batteaumen. He is stated to have fought in the Battle of Mudder's Creek. He also performed duties in the companies of Captain John Hess and John Zielly of the Palatine District Regiment of Militia. John Klock states the home of Crouse's Grandfather, John Klock, was fortified, and that he, Klock, was present in the house on October 19, Klock also stated that, during the Battle of Klock's Field, Leonard shot a British soldier and went out from Fort Klock to take the soldier's horse and baggage; and also that Sir John Johnson and his men first made their stand in Richard Failing's Orchard, about one mile west of his grandfather's house. Peter Fox states that he was present in Klock's Church when Jacob Crouse, the father of John Leonard Crouse, stood up and objected to his son's plans to marry Magdalena Klock. Henry A. 17 After the disappearence of John H. Devendorf, her husband, Catherine Klock married Jan. 19, 1808, John Markel. We have no record of any children born by this union. It is the opinion of the writer that this John Markel was a widower before his marriage with Catherine (Klock) Devendorf, and that the John Markel Jr., who married Catherine Devendorf, the daughter of John H. Devendorf and Catherine Klock, was his son by a former marriage. We are aware that much is lacking in the line of Catherine Klock and her two marriages, and that which is here inscribed is badly arranged, so space will be left to carry on this line, should more data come to light, and arrange it in better order. As a boy he saw those depart, at the call of General Herkimer, for the bloody field of Oriskany, and heard the cry of sorrow of those afflicted, who mourned the loss of those whoes bones lay bleaching on the fateful, but triumpant field of battle. Heard the rattle of musketrey 'round a bout "Old Fort Klock" at the battle of "Klock's Field" and saw the minnions of King George flee to the westward in disordered route. He saw service in the war of 1812, and was stationed at Sackets Harbor, and later at Ogdensburg, N.Y. He was known as Major after the war, altho no proof has been established that he ever held the rank of one. Tradition in the family says, that while stationed there, his son Abraham, then a boy in his early teens, road a horse from Old Fort Klock to Sackets Harbor for the use of his father who was then stationed there. If this be true, then no doubt he was a non commissioned officer of some sort. Enchanted prehaps by the valley thru which ran the great river on whoes banks he had bivwacked as a soilder, he decided to leave valley of the Mohawk, and in the year he removed to St. Lawrence county N.Y., where he purchased a large track of timber land on the west shore of Black lake, which became known as Klock's Bush in later years. This was a virgin wilderness, and the way hither from the Mohawk valley was the same, and transportation was by means of heavy wagons and slow going oxen. With John and his wife Nancy, came Abraham, Danial, and Christian, sons of John's by his second wife Elizabeth Nellis; also Isaac, Jacob, Luther and Margaret, by his third wife Anna (Nancy) Putman. All of these children were married at that time, and those by his second wife had offspring who were born in the Mohawk Valley.

18 A road was hewed out of the forest thru this track of timber land, that led from the lake road to the highway that ran from Hammond to Ogdensburg, and along it some of these sons and Margaret's husband, Joseph Weaver, settled. It bacame known as the "Klock Road" and is so known to this day. John Klock appears to have been known as John J. Klock Jr., but his tombstone bares the inscription, JOHN KLOCK, without the middle initial as do records in the "Sand Hill" church books extant in the Utica Library as well as those of the St. John's Reformed church books at St. Johnsville N.Y. where his name, and that of his wife appears. He and his 3rd. wife are buried at "The Cedars" on the shore of Black Lake, near Edwardsville, St. Lawrence Co. N.Y. The Head Stone of John Klock has broken off and is missing. His wife, Nancy stone is still there. (2005) With his first wife, Elizabeth Lampman I have Catharine, born March 05, 1796; Elizabeth ( Betsy ), born November 22, With his second wife, Elizabeth Nellis I have Abraham, born August 31, 1800; Daniel J., born May 01, 1802; Dorothy, born September 06, 1805 and Christian, born August 17, 1806; With his third wife, Nancy I have Lucinda, born in 1817; Margaret born December 02, 1814; Dorothy born May 25, 1810; Isaac Putman born in 1812; Jacob born January 06, 1822; Luther born March 06, 1819; and Peter May 10, The Klock Papers gives the date of birth of John Klock as Dec. 8, State of New York Montgomery County John Klock being duly swarn saith that in the year 1780 or there about as he now recollects in the month of October of said year he was in the Fort at John Klock the Desponent's grandfather in the District then called Palatine, now the Town of St. Johnsville, at the time when Sir John passed throught the valley of the Mohawk with his army burnt and destroyed buildings and grain and crows. Depenent said Crouse and others in the Fort say at the time that said Crouse had shot an Indian or Tory off his horse and that the horse immediately came running up to the fort with baggage fastened on his back and neck. Deponent says that the said Crouse took possession of the horse. The same day the said Leonard Crouse and others in the fort went in pursuit of Sir John and his army and overtook them on the flats of Richard Failing about one mile west of said Fort where said Crouse and others from the Fort had a battle with the enemy and drove them across the Mohawk river. Deponent was himself a spectator of said battle. Deponent also says that said Leonard Crouse and Lany Klock lived together as man and wife and had children together for about nineteen or twenty years as Deponent now recollects. Also buried in Old Klock Cemetery is his wife Margaret Henry died March 20, 1851 aged 78 years, 5 months, and 3 days which would make him born in Margaret died Feb. 28, 1835 aged 49 years, 5 months, and 12 days. Margaret Couch, wife of John Couch, daughter of John J. Klock and Catherine Fultz is also buried in this cemetery.
