PULSE OF THE PARISH Lucretia Locke, Senior Warden Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Thank you for your continuing support of our church during this time of transition. It has been difficult for all of us, but we ARE able, willing and looking forward to ensuring the future of All Saints' Church. The Vestry has been in contact with Canon Allisyn Thomas (our contact at the Diocese) regarding a list of approved interim Priests. As soon as that list becomes available, we will move as quickly as possible to interview and select a suitable Priest. In the meantime we will continue to use Supply Priests for our Sunday and Tuesday services. November is our Stewardship Campaign month. You will learn more in the coming days regarding your role in continuing to make sure that your church grows and remains a vital part of our lives. We have to do it--nobody will do it for us! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or a member of the Vestry. We are all working together for the future of All Saints' Church. Loyally, Lucretia Locke, Senior Warden 1 FOR ALL THE SAINTS
GENEROSITY PULSE OF THE PARISH A Message From The Stewardship Committee In the Gospel for September 24 (Matthew 20: 1-16), Jesus relates the parable of the householder who went out to hire laborers for his vineyard. Those hired early in the morning agreed with the owner of the vineyard to work for the normal wage of a denarius for a full day s work. Throughout the day, the householder repeatedly went to the market place and hired those who were standing around with no work. At the end of the day, every worker was paid one denarius, regardless of whether he had worked one hour or through the scorching heat of the full day. It is, of course, easy for us to identify with those who labored all day and grumbled when they received the same payment as those who had worked for only an hour. As Father Sanders told us in his sermon, this is one of the difficult parables of Jesus, because it does not seem at all fair by our earthly standards. But this story is not about minimum wage or fair labor standards here on earth. Rather, it is a parable of the kingdom of heaven. So, the key to understanding the parable is found in Matthew 20:15, where the Householder tells the unhappy laborers: Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity? October November
PARISH LIFE Generosity (continued) Father Sanders did not say a word in his sermon about our fall stewardship campaign at All Saints. But through his preaching about this parable, he brought us a message about the generosity of our God. All of us at All Saints have received gifts from a generous God throughout our lives including the opportunity to come together week by week in our parish church to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. When we pledge time, talent, or treasure to support our parish, we are actually giving back to a generous God what is already His. We are reminded of the traditional offertory sentence, All things come of Thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given Thee (I Chronicles 29:14). During October and the first two Sundays in November, we will share messages based on the weekly scripture readings that focus on the theme of Generosity. We will learn that we are stewards of the gifts of a generous God and that we are called in return to give generously of what God has loaned to us. As Senior Warden Lucretia Locke has reminded us, Nobody will do it for us. Pledge forms for 2018 will be available in mid- October, and may be submitted at any time. On Sunday, November 19, all of the pledge forms will be presented at the Altar at both es. If our response is characterized by the generosity of the Householder in the parable of the workers in the vineyard, we will be able to say or sing a rousing chorus of the familiar doxology, Praise God from whom all blessings flow. 3 FOR ALL THE SAINTS

PARISH LIFE Eyesore! Yes, these photo were really taken next to the All Saints Preschool! I am hoping to totally transform this perfectly utilizable space into an additional garden/retreat space to be used for flowers and greens for our Sunday services. My goal is to have a self-sustaining Flower Guild. Now that the weather has cooled, I feel this is the time to begin this project. This renovation will require a rototiller, dumpster or some such for debris removal, topsoil, plants and some sort of sprinkler system. I also noticed some critter holes there as well. My hope is that most of the work can be done without hiring an outside service or if needed, finding someone who knows one of our parishioners and might give us some tips on how to proceed with a small budget in mind. I am looking for monetary donations for plant purchases or donations of plants once we decide the types of plants most desirable for the Flower Guild and the area (could be in a loved one s memory), some muscle, a rototiller (do we have any farmers out there?), mulch and ideas and help from all of you who value our flower artistry in your worship every Sunday. I am excited to make this area one that reflects the beauty of and will enhance our Church property and I am hoping for your support in any way to make it happen! 17 CONCERT AT ALL SAINTS New City Sinfonia San Diego The New City Sinfonia returns to All Saints on Sunday, November 12, at 3:00pm with an Autumn program of orchestral music. Since 2017 is being observed worldwide as the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, the Sinfonia will present parts of Felix Mendelssohn s Reformation Symphony, which he composed in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, a key event of Lutheran Protestantism. Also on the program will be Schubert s lovely Symphony No. 5. The most lightly orchestrated of all Schubert symphonies, the 5th is often described as Mozartean, and with good reason. In 1816, Schubert became enamored of Mozart s music, writing in his diary that immortal Mozart has given us countless impressions of a brighter, better life! Completing the program will be John Williams haunting Theme from Schindler s List. A $10 Donation will be accepted at the door. Now in its 32nd season, the Sinfonia is sponsored by San Diego Continuing Education, and draws its members from all over San Diego County. The group presents three concerts to the San Diego Community each year, plus additional outreach programs. Director Daniel Ratelle is the founding conductor of the Sinfonia, and also teaches Music at Mesa College. Excerpts of past concerts can be found on You Tube, under "New City Sinfonia." We hope to see you at All Saints on Sunday, November 12. October November
COMMEMORATION William Tyndale 1536 William Tyndale was born about 1495 at Slymbridge near the Welsh border. He received his degrees from Magdalen College, Oxford, and also studied at Cambridge. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1521, and soon began to speak of his desire, which eventually became his life's obsession, to translate the Scriptures into English. It is reported that, in the course of a dispute with a prominent clergyman who disparaged this proposal, he said, "If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scriptures than thou dost." The remainder of his life was devoted to keeping that vow, or boast. Finding that the King, Henry VIII, was firmly set against any English version of the Scriptures, he fled to Germany (visiting Martin Luther in 1525), and there travelled from city to city, in exile, poverty, persecution, and constant danger. Tyndale understood the commonly received doctrine -- the popular theology -- of his time to imply that men earn their salvation by good behavior and by penance. He wrote eloquently in favor of the view that salvation is a gift of God, freely bestowed, and not a response to any good act on the part of the receiver. His views are expressed in numerous pamphlets, and in the introductions to and commentaries on various books of the Bible that accompanied his translations. He completed his translation of the New Testament in 1525, and it was printed at Worms and smuggled into England. Of 18,000 copies, only two survive. In 1534, he produced a revised version, and began work on the Old Testament. In the next two years he completed 15 FOR ALL THE SAINTS
COMMEMORATION William Tyndale (continued) and published the Pentateuch and Jonah, and translated the books from Joshua through Second Chronicles, but then he was captured (betrayed by one he had befriended), tried for heresy, and put to death. He was burned at the stake, but, as was often done, the officer strangled him before lighting the fire. His last words were, "Lord, open the King of England's eyes." Miles Coverdale continued Tyndale's work by translating those portions of the Bible (including the Apocrypha) which Tyndale had not lived to translate himself, and publishing the complete work. In 1537, the "Matthew Bible" (essentially the Tyndale- Coverdale Bible under another man's name to spare the government embarrassment) was published in England with the Royal Permission. Six copies were set up for public reading in Old St. Paul's Church, and throughout the daylight hours the church was crowded with those who had come to hear it. One man would stand at the lectern and read until his voice gave out, and then he would stand down and another would take his place. All English translations of the Bible from that time to the present century are essentially revisions of the Tyndale-Coverdale work. The best summary James Kiefer knows of Tyndale's writings on grace is found in C. S. Lewis's English Literature in the Sixteenth Century, Excluding Drama (Oxford University Press, 1954), pp Kiefer goes out on a limb and says that any Christian who reads English and is interested in the theological questions of the Reformation ought to read large portions of this work. In particular, he recommend pages 32-44, (or at least and ), and From James Kiefer s BIO s October November
COMMEMORATION Willibrord of Utrecht 739 Willibrord, first Archbishop of Utrecht, is one of the missionaries sent out by the Anglo-Saxon Christians about a century after they had themselves been Christianized by missionaries in the south and east of England from Rome and the Continent, and in the north and west from the Celtic peoples of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. We know of Willibrord s life and missionary labors through a few notes written by a contemporary, the Venerable Bede, in his The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, and in a biography of Willibrord written by his younger kinsman, Alcuin. Willibrord was born in Northumbria about the year 658 and from the age of seven was brought up and educated in Bishop Wilfrid s monastery at Ripon. On Wilfrid s virtual deposition as bishop in 678 and his subsequent expulsion from Northumbria, Willibrord went to Ireland both for study and for voluntary exile for twelve years, where he was ordained to the presbyterate and acquired the desire to do missionary work. On his return to England in 690, he decided to travel to Frisia, a still-pagan area increasingly under the domination of the Christian Franks. With twelve missionary companions, he made his way to Frisia through the kingdom of the Franks, having obtained the permission of Pepin the Second, duke of Austrasia, who had recently conquered western Frisia, to preach among the Frisians. Bede tells us that the mission prospered, and that the companions converted many folk in a short while from idolatry to faith in Christ. During this time, Willibrord traveled to Rome, where 17 FOR ALL THE SAINTS
COMMEMORATION Willibrord of Utrecht (continued) he received the approbation and encouragement of Pope Sergius for the mission. Willibrord returned to Frisia and went again to Rome in 695, at Pepin s behest, to be ordained to the episcopate by Pope Sergius, who bestowed on him the name Clement and sent him back with the definite mission to establish the Church in Frisia with a metropolitan see at Utrecht and suffragan bishoprics according to the pattern at Canterbury and elsewhere. In 678 Willibrord established his largest monastery at Echternach, in what is now Luxembourg, where he died more than forty years later at the age of 81, on the seventh of November 739. He was immediately venerated as a saint. One of his most interesting surviving relics is the Calendar of Saint Willibrord, written for his own private use, which contains marginal note in his own hand recording his consecration at Rome and other biographical details. prepared from The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Saints and Lesser Feasts and Fasts (1980) October November

PARISH HISTORY All Saints Seal Peter was also known as Simon or Cephas. He was the brother of Andrew and became the leading Apostle after Pentecost until the Council of Jerusalem in 50 A.D. Thereafter his whereabouts are not known with certainty. Peter was crucified in Rome under Nero. An ancient historian records that he asked to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to be crucified as his Lord. The keys represent Jesus' saying, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven." Source: F. R. Webber s Church Symbolism The symbols within the shield starting from the top left represent the Holy Spirit, the Eucharist, the Holy Oil and Baptism which are the outward and visible signs of what all saints represent.
