Mark 1:1 (NRSV) Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Greetings in the name of our risen Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ! This is the last time that I get to address you in this forum. As you know, my last Sunday in Kaneville will be June 16. Susan and I will be moving within a day or two of then. Usually, I will select a passage of Scripture related to what I intend to say in this space. However, in this instance, I chose merely to share some of my favorite passages from Scripture to leave with you as I go forth to continue my ministry in Walnut. The conundrum that I face is that this is at once a sad and exhilarating time. I m excited for the opportunity that lies ahead for me to live out my ministry in a new setting, but sad to be leaving Kaneville. Yet that is what United Methodist elders are called to do. At our ordination we vow to honor the itinerate ministry and to go where our bishop has discerned we can be of best use. Each of us knows that our ministry in any place will only be for a time, rather than settled. This form of ministry is a blessing even if it does come with certain challenges. As a pastor I will leave with unfinished business. There are things that I d hope to accomplish with you as this congregation finds new ways to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, that I won t get to see through. There are regrets for things that I could have done better and for the places that I ve failed myself and you. I love Jesus Christ, his church, and this congregation. Unfortunately, where some may appreciate my directness for others it can come across as off-putting or hurtful. At times I struggle with tact. However, my desire has always been to help each member here to live out the full potential of God s ministry through you and I believe that God has blessed this congregation with gifts to do great things. For those whom I ve failed in my ministry and to those whom I may have caused anguish, I ask for your forgiveness. I also ask that you will continue to pray for me in my ongoing ministry. In addition to the day to day things that never seem finished, there s the unfinished business of weddings, KANEVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH JUNE 2013 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31 (NRSV) All who have sinned apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous in God s sight, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles, who do not possess the law, do instinctively what the law requires, these, though not having the law, are a law to themselves. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, to which their own conscience also bears witness; and their conflicting thoughts will accuse or perhaps excuse them on the day when, according to my gospel, God, through Jesus Christ, will judge the secret thoughts of all. Romans 2:12-16 (NRSV) baptisms, confirmations, yet to come that I had been awaiting. All though I will celebrate those events with you in prayer and spirit, I won t be able to do so in person. You will have a new pastor. As you prepare to receive Rev. Avani (Ä vǝ nē) Christian into ministry in this place, I must step aside so that I don t interfere with God s intention to bless you through her. Professional ethics and Christian love for Avani insist on as much. As much as there are friendships that have blessed me in this place, I must leave them behind so that I don t inadvertently create any barrier between this congregation and its pastor. I will follow your work through the church newsletter. I will make myself available to Pastor Avani (with my past experience of moving from a parish, I m sure that she and I will talk) and offer her any help and useful information that I can. I will continue to pray for you. And if there is the occasion when a familiar face appears in Walnut, I ll rejoice. Even now, we are experiencing merely the beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Thank you for allowing me to walk among you for this time. Thank you for allowing me to pray with you, to celebrate life s joys, and to grieve with you during this time. One of the great blessings of Methodism is that with the transition from one pastor to another congregations have the opportunity to hold onto the best that each had to offer, so that eventually it would be as if each had the perfect pastor. As Pastor Avani and her family arrives, I ask that you pray for her and her ministry, here, as you move onto perfection with those who serve among you. Your Brother in Christ, Rev. KUMC will be transformed into a huge national park with waterfalls, rock formations and more that will point the way to Jesus! 6 Making Giving a Simple Priority Some members have asked if there is an easy way to give to the church automatically. Although the church is not set up to make automatic deductions, if you bank on-line, there is simple way to make your giving an automatic priority. All you have to do is set up Kaneville United Methodist Church in your Bill Pay feature. For an account number, you can use either your name or offering envelope number. Not only is this an easy way to assure that your offering arrives regularly, you also have the ability to adjust your payment amount. One hint: By making the church a bill you may avoid other fees that your bank may charge for making processing the payment in another manner. 7 COCS-- Food for Thought Practice Self-Compassion Grief can be a difficult journey. Even if a person has experienced prior losses, lessons learned from that grief journey may or may not help with this grief journey. This loss may be at a different time in your life or it may be complicated by outside factors. Many people are surprised at how differently they experience grief from one loss to the next. But one thing that is critical in both experiences is to practice self-compassion. Go gently. Be kind to yourself. Pace yourself. Watch out for your shoulds. For example, without realizing it, you may believe that people who are mourning the loss of a loved one should cry, should talk about it, should stay at home on the holidays. But these shoulds may not be helpful to you. Give yourself permission to experience your current grief in whatever way it comes up. To find support in your grief journey, consider participating in one of Conley Outreach s grief support groups. Friendship Night Support Group, open to all adults grieving the loss of a loved one to death, meets next on May 30, with the topic Here s the Guidebook. Mourning After Support Group, open to young (age 55 and under) widows, widowers and adults whose significant other has died, meets on June 6 with the topic Two paths. Grieving Parent Support Group meets on June 13 with the topic Trauma and Grief. All groups meet Thursday, 7 8:30 p.m., at the Elburn Community Center, 525 Main Street, Room 10, and are facilitated by Lora Windsor, LCSW. All groups are free, but the Mourning After Support Group requires pre-registration. Mark your calendar for an additional program this month, Healing the Physical Aspects of Grief, June 20 at 7pm by Dr. Erika Mennerick, DC. Please call for more information.
