1 C H U R C H O F T H E H O L Y C R O S S The Messenger A u g u s t 2, Using the questions and suggestions from our Board Fair held on January 22, these are actions that the Board of Trustees have taken: 2017 Board Fair Results Upgrade of our PA system in sanctuary and Building of Faith. Pastor Eric is heading this project with funds budgeted for capital purchase. Retirement assisted housing for our aging congregation. Not feasible at this time. Covered parking for seniors and handicapped. Being researched. Status of funds invested with the Hawaii Conference and restricted and unrestricted funds. Will be explained during budget and general membership meetings. Contributions by the other congregations who meet at our church. They make monetary payments and participate in Service days. Service days now have a person in charge of work areas. Using the questions and suggestions from that same Board Fair, these are actions that the Board of Deacons has taken: As requested, we are using more hymns from the Praise! (Red book) and Sing! (Black book) hymnals in worship. To enhance our welcome, ushers will introduce guests to a member who has volunteered to sit with newcomers at worship. Introducing Seniors to technology Pastor Eric spoke about social media at Sr. Ministry on May 25th, 2017 and others will be encouraged to participate and share their knowledge at a future date. Here are the actions implemented by the Board of Christian Education: Submit an article to The Messenger monthly for publication. Pastor Eric continues to conduct Bible study groups for adults. Our children passed out home made Valentines, assisted in the dedication of baskets for the homeless, read a poem for Teacher Appreciation. Representative from BCE continues to attend Council Meetings to communicate with other Boards.

2 P a g e 2 The Pastor s Corner Rev. Eric S. Anderson Three Great Loves. The storyteller in me imagines people who, after many years, fondly describe three people who filled their hearts: I remember the little girl who played catch with me on the playground. I remember the young man who first held my hand at a movie. I remember the loving helpmate who went with me through every trouble. But no, as great as these are (and they are), Three Great Loves is greater. These are loves that spring from the seed of our love of God; these are loves which stretch further than our friends and family; these are loves that can literally preserve our fragile world. They re the focus of the United Church of Christ for the next two years, and they have been, they are, and they will be part of our story at Church of the Holy Cross. They are: Love of Neighbor. Love of Children. Love of Creation. There s nothing new here. Christians and the Christian Church have loved neighbor, children, and Creation since Jesus. But maybe we can think of new ways to live out that love in our homes, in our public places, and in our environment. Maybe we have done things that others will want to know about: to celebrate, to guide, and to inspire. We will be sharing our ministries to neighbor, children, and Creation with the wider Church (this year s first-time Slipper Project comes to mind, or the fact that we store clean-up buckets to assist folks after disaster). And I hope you ll join me in reading the stories at 3greatloves.org. Something we read may give us some ideas. Let s bring our aloha! 3 P a g e 3 Choir Resumes Singing in August While our choir has been on vacation in July, we have been blessed with a variety of special music: Karla Ahn with her original composition of Psalm 106; Rev. Eric Anderson with his performance of There Is a River; Amy Horst s rendition of Duke Ellington s Come Sunday, and Kanako Okita s piano rendition of Jean Sibelius The Spruce. A wide variety of music, all very well done, indeed. Meanwhile, our choir director Rachel Edwards has been at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival working with world class musicians and faculty. She performed in her first opera Suor Angelica, which was paired with Pergolessi s Stabat Mater, a show named Mother Sister. This powerful show depicted the origins of nuns in a convent and their relationship with The Mother Mary. She was directed by Grammy Award winning Mezzo- Soprano Peabody Southwell and vocally trained by former Sydney Opera House soprano Jennifer McGreggor. She s very excited to share some of the things she s learned with the members and friends of Church of the Holy Cross. Choir practice resumes Tuesday, August 1 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday practice is at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to come and sing. Annual Church Picnic & SUMMER JUDO GRAND TOURNAMENT Come to our annual church picnic on Sunday, August 6 th and watch the summer judo grand tournament between Anpan Man and Manju Man. Besides our judo tournament, we will be having games, lucky number prizes, bingo as well as slip and slide for the children. Bento lunches will be provided along with watermelon and shaved ice. Remember, its FREE, FREE, FREE! Boys in Hats performed to a great audience on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Church of the Holy Cross!
