7 Administratrix: Margaret Cartmill. Probate: 22 Jan 1838 p. 237: Mar. 1838: Sale of Estate: purchasers include Matison Cartmill. Wade Hampton bought Esau. p. 236: appraisal p. 190 (could be uncle?) Tom named as appraiser; p. 70 Tom purchases of estate of Jess Perdue; p. 67 Tom purchases of estate of Jemima Blankenship; p. 66 Tom purchases of estate of Peter Blankenship. Family section of Cabell County History indicates that Thomas Cartmill and Samuel Hatton both came to Big Sandy in 1790's. Says Tom's son John and "his" (John's?) son James were in Civil War. There's a James listed as AWOL in WV Archives, but claims it's probably son of John (not James Madison Cartmill). The whole clan moved to Clinton Co. MO (including John). John was the only Cartmill surname in 1870 Wayne Co. census; didn't check for Fields, Chapman, etc. Ratliff's book on Compton says that Thomas was son of John Cartmill and Susannah Ward; also mistakenly lists Margaret as having married James Madison, but doesn't list her having a brother by that name. Notes for Nancy Cumpton: b. circa Children of Thomas Cartmill and Nancy Cumpton are: i. Margaret Cartmill, born 1803; married John Peatt December 10, 1837 in (Lawrence) OH. ii. Jane Cartmill, born 1806; died Aft. 1870; married Strother McClure August 07, 1828 in (Cabell) VA; born 1806 in VA. Notes for Jane Cartmill: Hatten Cem. on Lower Gragston has Jane Hatten, d/o Thomas Cartmill b & Philip Hatten, Sr. ( ), s/o Samuel & Rosanna (Queen) Hatten. Look for marriage ca I think it could be a cousin of Thomas--perhaps daughter of his uncle Thomas. The whole family is in Wayne Co. 1860, though, including the Shannons who married the Hattens. Virgil Hatton: The History or Genealogy of the Hatton Family insists that this Jane was Tom and Nancy's daughter, but says she was born in which makes it very difficult to be correct! Notes for Strother McClure: Sgt. in David Bartram's Co., 167th Militia (CSA) iii. Eleanore Cartmill, born 1807; married Willis Fields January 27, iv. Notes for Thomas Cartmill II: Note: May be her sister Louisa who married Layne Compton, found in 1870 (Lawrence) KY Census. vii. Alexander Cartmill, born 1816; died 1816; married Ann. Notes for Alexander Cartmill: This Alex. easily confused with brother Tom's son Alex. One of them married Eliza Ann Dishman and had son Ulysses, b.
