How we communicate is of vital importance to our church family. In order for the church office to communicate more effectively with our congregation, we are asking everyone to update their address by sending it to the church office. Pat at: pat@broadmanchurch.org Rhonda at: office@broadmanchurch.org The office will begin using as the main form of communication effective immediately. If you need to contact us by phone, you may use either of the two office phone lines: or From the Pastor s Heart... Dear members & friends of Broadman Baptist Church: He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Matthew 16:15-18, ESV) He is risen, He is risen indeed, and He is still risen even after Easter is over! April was a great month during which we had the joy of celebrating Christ s resurrection together five times on Sunday mornings, with one extra special celebration of it on Easter Sunday. If you recall, during the message that Sunday, I mentioned how important it is for us to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus every week and not just on Easter. I also talked about how easy it is for us to make excuses not to do that, to make excuses not to come and worship God together. It is so true, isn t it? Especially when we start getting into the summer months, the excuses can come so easily. We can be like the fisherman who, when asked (Continued on page 2) March 16, 17, 18 See Page 9 for details

2 Page 2 PASTOR S CORNER CONTINUED... INTERESTING STORIES... (Continued from page 1) where he was Sunday, said that he had to go fishing that summer morning because his wife had a cold and they certainly could not go to church! Ridiculous, right? Yet, if we are honest with ourselves, these excuses may hit a little too close to home. How often do we rationalize skipping worship with the same types of excuses? I wonder if one big reason these excuses become so attractive is that we lose sight of what the church is and why it matters. I wonder if we reduce the church to a series of programs and events that begin to take on a life of their own rather than serving the mission of God s church. In other words, I wonder if we sometimes make those means to an end into the end itself. When that happens, we lose focus on why we exist, who we are to be, and what we are to accomplish. Consequently, we lose energy and power and joy. The excuses gain steam as we forget the reason we are here. Over the past few years, the more I have thought and prayed about it, the more I have come to believe that we all need a refresher course on the church. We need to remember how great a gift the church is to us. We need to remember to whom the church belongs. We need to remember how we are to live together as members of His church. We need to remember how we are to function as Christ s church. We need to remember why we come together to worship, to grow, to serve, to make a difference as Christ s people. With that in mind, what better place to go for a refresher about the church than to go back to the beginning, the roots of the church detailed in the book of Acts? Consequently, I have begun a sermon series in Acts entitled The Church: Season 1. We will work through various episodes in the book of Acts from chapter 1 up until the missionary journeys of the apostle Paul, which I would describe as The Church: Season 2. Through this series, I pray that we can be encouraged about the significance of His church and the potential that rests within us as His church. God wants to do great things. Let's get in on them! DECISIONS MATTER... -Pastor Steve Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may launch an attack otherwise i m p o s s i b l e. C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity MYSTERIOUS WAYS... Before pursuing a career as a Christian singer, Ryan Stevenson was a paramedic, encountering trauma and true brokenness. When he received a 911 call about a woman struck by lightning, Stevenson didn t think she d survive. But thanks in part to his efforts, the woman made a full recovery and later struck up a friendship with him. One day the woman asked Stevenson, If you could be doing anything with your life, what would it be? His answer? Music. She gave him a check for $2,000, and he used it to cut an EP, which led to a record deal. Through Stevenson s chart-topping song Eye of the Storm, he wants to remind listeners that God hasn t forgotten about us. He s still paying attention to us no matter how horrible things might seem. He s in control. RESTORING THE BALANCE... In Springs in the Valley (Zondervan), pioneer missionary Lettie Cowman tells of a traveler making a trek through an African jungle. Native tribesmen who helped carry loads walked rapidly on day one, covering a great distance. Yet the next morning they refused to move. When the frustrated traveler asked the tribesmen why they were just sitting, they said they d gone too fast on the first day and were now waiting for their souls to catch up to their bodies. Cowman writes, This whirling rushing life which so many of us live does for us what that march did for those tribesmen. The difference: They knew they needed to restore life s balance; too often we do not. God promises rest for our soul and body, so don t overlook the importance of physical restoration. Only by taking time to recharge can you be an effective laborer in God s kingdom. WHY DON T STREETLAMPS HAVE EARS?... Mom! my 3-year-old self hissed at 6 a.m. Why don t streetlamps have ears? My mom later wrote (in a 1974 article) that she peered at me sleepily, silently asking a question of her own: Seriously?! That year I amused and exasperated my parents with countless questions: Why did sister leave one shoe here and one there? If God is up in heaven, how did he make the grass? Why are dandelions yellow? To that query, Mom replied, I guess that s how God wanted them and wrote, In our house, we let God answer many of our questions. I still have questions: Why is my dynamic young friend dying of cancer? Why are a parent s own children sometimes hard to love? How can we end war, poverty, sex trafficking? Should we donate money or save for college? How, exactly, does salvation work? Sometimes science or professionals are God s instruments to answer my questions. Sometimes answers come quietly to my heart and sometimes they don t come at all. Faith doesn t mean never questioning. It means trusting enough to ask, even when a question seems silly or pointless. Thanks, Mom

NOTE: This is a change from our regular rehearsal schedule of the first Wednesday of the month. We will lead the worship service on Sunday, May 14; then begin our summer break. We will return to our regular rehearsal schedule at the end of August. Please be in prayer during the summer break as to your place in the Music Ministry in the fall. GIVE AS GOD PROSPERS Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God prospers him, that there will be no collecting when I come. I Corinthians 16:2 The Pharisees considered wealth to be a proof of a person s righteousness. Jesus startled them with the story where a diseased beggar is rewarded and a rich man is punished. The rich man did not go to hell because of his wealth but because he was selfish, refusing to feed Lazarus, take him in, or care for him. The rich man was hardhearted in spite of his great blessings. The amount of money we have is not as important as the way we use it. What is your attitude toward your money and possessions? Do you hoard them selfishly, or do you use them to help others? Father, You have given me so much. Help me honor You with my offerings. Life Application Bible Bring your newspapers, cardboard and used boxes to help fill our recycle bin. Remember to break down boxes to save on space. The more we gather the better! MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES... The Nominating/Personnel Team makes every effort to keep ministry positions filled. After a review of all Broadman s Ministry Leadership Positions we have found the following in need of filling. Please look over the list and if God leads you to fill any of these areas please contact Rev. John McIntyre or Bill Stockdale. Remember our motto: Every member is a minister and every member should have a ministry THE WB: WEDNESDAY BROADMAN There is something for everyone on Wednesday nights. If you have not worshipped with us on Wednesday s please consider giving it a try. The WB is a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. It is a time in which we can seek God and experience fellowship with God s people mid-week in order to stay connected to God and one another. RECYCLE: IT S THE RIGHT THING TO DO!! 5 Page 6 CONSTITUITON BIBLE QUIZ AND MORE... KNOW YOUR CONSTITUITON... ARTICLE VII: CHURCH MINISTRY PHILOSOPHY Broadman Baptist Church believes that Jesus has commissioned His Church to carry on His mission on the face of the earth. Therefore, every member is called to serve the Lord through their daily lives and the church. Every believer is a minister and every minister has a ministry. We encourage all members to get involved in the ministries of the church by using their spiritual gifts, the passion of their hearts, natural Godgiven abilities, personalities and unique life experiences. Acts 17 describes Paul speaking about God to the people of Athens in front of incredibly! a site that still exists. What is that site? The philosophy of ministry is based on Christ s example of being the Son of Man who served all of humanity even unto death on a cross. Jesus Christ served us by dying for our sins to forgive us and gives us a relationship with God throughout all eternity. Serving God and one another is expected of all believers. A. The Panathenaic Stadium B. The Areopagus C. The Acropolis and the Parthenon D. The Temple of Hephaestus In some cases, such as teaching or ministering to children and/or youth one must fill out a background survey, be interviewed, and approved by either the minister of that area of ministry or the Church Pastor. To serve in any ministry start by contacting the Ministry Director of that Ministry. You can find the appropriate Director of Ministry by checking our Organizational Chart which is located in the hallway near the pastor s office. There is a listing of open positions on page 5 of this Newsletter. FIND YOUR MINISTRY! Answer: (See Acts 17:22.) Answer on page 9 BUCKET LIST David Brooks, author of The Road to Character (Random House), created a moral bucket list in an effort to develop eulogy virtues the traits praised at people s funerals. Qualities such as humility, dependence and energizing love offer more joy than any résumé virtues ever will, he writes. There s joy in freely chosen obedience to organizations, ideas and people. There s joy in mutual stumbling. There s an aesthetic joy we feel when we see morally good action, when we run across someone who is quiet and humble and good, when we see that however old we are, there s lots to do ahead.

6 Page 7 MISSIONS... MAY MISSIONS SPRING HIKKING SPREE cannot stress the importance of the information on this video. You have to know your enemy in order to defeat your enemy. Our mission for the month of May is to support Ottis Denney funds to support church planters. This is one of the programs of the Summit Baptist Association. Last month we supported church planters in North America by donation to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. This is a continuation of missions in action. SPRING HIKING SPREE!!... -Loretta Hurite If we are to grow and be a visible force for God in our culture, we need to be placing missions at the forefront of our ministries. The threat to drive this away is very real. I just read an online piece from the Conservative Alert about an Australian couple who were viciously attacked on a train because they were Christian. However, this is not limited to foreign lands. Sadly enough we can find growing animosity against Christians here in our own country. Building missions is a powerful way to counteract opposition to the Gospel. Offerings will be collected during the month of May by placing them in our regular offering collections designated for the Ottis Denney Mission Project. Another way Christians can make a difference is by being aware of legislation working its way in our state and federal government. Our system of government demands citizen participation and not just at elections. It was the anger of the people in Maryland that defeated a bill to make Maryland a sanctuary state, this after a fourteen year old girl was brutally raped by illegals in the school restroom. One bill making its way a second time through our state legislature is the Heartbeat Bill. This bill makes it illegal to abort a child once a heartbeat is detected. The bill once passed the house and senate but was vetoed by Gov. Kasich. I was told there is more support for the bill and that it has a good chance of being passed. If you would like too see this happen contact your state legislatures by going to legislature.ohio.gov. Another bill sitting in the federal judiciary committee is one Christians should be raising their voices. US HB 565 Save Christians from Genocide Act was introduced in the House Judiciary committee in January of this year. This bill would give priority refugee status to Christians where they are facing horrendous persecution and extinction particularly in the Middle East. It was reported by Breitbart news that 90,000 Christians were killed for their faith in This has to stop. We need to be making calls to get this bill moving. The best number to call is to the staff of this committee which is Getting the bill approved and out of committee is the first step to passage. Also we need to be praying for the Coptic Christians in Egypt who have suffered much from the brutal acts of the radical Islamic terrorists as recent as Palm Sunday. There is a very well-done and very informative documentary called The Enemy Within. This video was put together by Trevor Loudon who has spent 30 years tracking the enemies of our freedom in our country. It is a comprehensive work of how a small number of communists, socialists, and extreme Progressives have influenced US laws and politicians. These subversives have infiltrated our military, unions, legislatures, the education system, and other institutions even churches. Some have stated this is the civil war of our time and one we cannot afford to lose. This video may be purchased or viewed at Amazon.com or EnemiesWithinMovie.com. I Spring Walks will be starting up the first Sunday in May. If you walk 5 walks you receive a commemorative pin and for the first time hikers you will receive a neck lanyard. 7 Page 8 HAPPY MOTHER S DAY... MAY 14, 2017 Mother If I could give you diamonds for each tear you cried for me. if I could five you sapphires for each truth you've helped me see. If I could give you rubies for the heartache that you've known If I could give you pearls for the wisdom that you've shown. Then you'll have a treasure, mother, that would mount up to the skies That would almost match the sparkle in your kind and loving eyes. But I have no pearls, no diamonds, As I'm sure you're well aware So I'll give you gifts more precious My devotion, love and care. Author Unknown
