REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS SITUATION ASSESSMENT, HOMELESS ISSUES IN DOWNTOWN SALT LAKE CITY Provided a comprehensive Situation Assessment of the homeless issues affecting downtown SLC exploring public perceptions and stakeholder willingness to be part of the solution through 50+ interviews across a range of interests. Final report included an identification of potential strategic opportunities for city government to leverage stakeholder interest, as well as process design suggestions for moving forward in a collaborative, efficient and effective manner. Project conducted with help of Environmental Clinic students. See Situation Assessment Executive Summary. COLLABORATIVE GROUP ON SUSTAINABLE GRAZING FOR THREE NATIONAL FORESTS IN SOUTHERN UTAH Facilitator for collaboration that developed consensus agreement on grazing management principles and practices that provide for ecological sustainability and are socially acceptable and economically viable. Primary focus was on three southern Utah National Forests. The participants represented federal and state agencies, academia, as well as agricultural, wildlife and environmental groups. See Final Report and Consensus Recommendations. ESCALANTE RIVER WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP Facilitator for collaboration co-sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, National Park Service and Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. Collaboration members include federal and state agencies, various non-profit organizations, and local landowners and community members. The partnership is developing a collaborative and comprehensive approach to restore, protect and maintain a healthy riparian ecosystem in the Escalante River watershed. ERWP was selected by the Secretary of the Interior as a 2013 and 2014 America s Great Outdoors project. See partnership website. OPEN GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE, SALT LAKE CITY MAYOR S OFFICE Strategic advisor to SLC Mayor Ralph Becker s Open Government Initiative, which sought to make transparency, public engagement and collaboration the way SLC does business. Activities include: baseline assessment of all City departments regarding current transparency and public engagement efforts; development of open government values; development of public engagement protocols. See related website at PIONEER PARK PARTNERS TEAM Convened and facilitated a community dialogue among stakeholders drawn from the immediate neighbors of this park in downtown Salt Lake City, including residents, businesses, homeless community representatives, other property owners and local police. The group developed and implemented strategies over several years to ensure the park s safety and livability. As a result, public perception about the park and the immediate neighborhood changed from seeing the park as a dangerous drug haven to thinking of it as the heart of downtown, along with its regular use as a neighborhood park. This Salt Lake Solutions project received a cash award from Metlife/Hellenic Foundation for effective community engagement. CLEAR THE AIR CHALLENGE / CARE TO CLEAR THE AIR Convened and facilitated the Air Quality Partners Team, made up of state and local government entities, business, faith, education and other community groups interested in motivating behavior changes to improve air quality in Salt Lake Valley. The group s first project, Clear the Air Challenge, resulted in >1 million vehicle miles saved in 2009 and >1.2 million miles saved in 2010 and The Challenge has been held annually since 2009 and is now coordinated by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. The group also developed a related winter campaign, Care to Clear the Air This Salt Lake Solutions project received a number of awards: 2010 Outstanding Achievement City Livability Award (U.S. Conference of Mayors); 2010 Utah Green Business Award (Utah Business magazine); Bright Idea, Innovations in American Government (Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Harvard Kennedy School).

The Collaboration s mission was to develop existing and desired conditions and grazing management practices to be used by the Forest in developing the overall management plans for the two allotments. The Collaboration conducted field research during two summers, issued a final report containing consensus recommendations which are being collaboratively implemented. See Collaboration website. WASATCH WATER LEGACY PARTNERSHIP Facilitated series of partnership development meetings between federal, state and local government agencies, private sector and NGO representatives, all concerned about water quality, development and sustainable recreation in the watershed and canyons feeding into the Salt Lake Valley. After identifying common goals, key issues and challenges, and prioritizing collaborative strategies, the group has created the partnership and undertaken selected collaborative actions. This effort is considered a US Forest Service national model of private-public partnerships. HILL AIR FORCE BASE and UTAH TEST AND TRAINING RANGE (UTTR) Facilitator for two Hill AFB-related Restoration Advisory Board, each consisting of over twenty community, tribal, agency and NGO members who advise the base on priorities and appropriate investigation and remedies for hazardous waste and unexploded ordinance cleanups.
