Types of Church Planters and Pauline Profile Training for Church Multiplication Asia CPI 2012
What are the most common reasons church plants fail? p p p The wrong church planter Inability to work on a team Inadequate strategy Ramon Carmona, veteran church planter in Colombia
Everyone agrees on #1 p It takes a certain kind of person to plant churches!
God works through prepared people p Big Picture n The Church Planter s Heart - Matt 9: n Character and Skills - Psalm 78: n Calling Some called to plant and move on, others to plant and stay 1Cor. 3:5-6
Calling of Apostles and Pastors p Missionaries vs. Elders, Acts 14:23,26, Tit 1:5 p Apostles vs. Pastors, Eph. 4:11
The Calling of Apostles and Pastors Apostles / Missionaries Itinerate Pioneer Initiate Evangelize & Disciple Equip Elders & Missionaries Pastors / Elders Remain Strengthen Grow Teach & Counsel Care for Believers
Three Types of Church Planters p The Pastoral Church Planter n Plant and pastor the church until it is able to call and pay a national pastor n Strength: highly qualified leaders n Weakness: rarely leads to multiplication
Three Types of Church Planters p The Catalytic Church Planter n The church planter plants and remains in a large central church that that produces many daughter churches n Strength: multiple churches, high public profile of the church and movement n Weakness: most church planters are not gifted enough to plant such a church; one generation reproduction
Three Types of Church Planters p The Apostolic Church Planter n The church planter does not pastor the church, but equips local leaders to pastor the church, then moves on n Strength: facilitates multiplication and local ownership n Weakness: initially slower progress, lay leadership may be weak

Church Planter Profile p Four C s for lead church planter selection Call Competencies Character Chemistry Another important one is Conjugal Support!
A Study of Paul as a Apostolic Church Planter Based on Ed Stetzer, Planting Churches in a Post-Modern Age Church Planter Profile How many of these qualities apply to today s apostolic church planter?
Paul was uniquely prepared as a person p World-class formal training- Phil. 3:4-5. p Vital connection with God- 2 Cor. 12:7-9. p Stepped out in faith from the start- Acts 9: p Teachable & under authority- Acts 11: p He lived an exemplary life- 1 Thess. 2.
Paul was a faithful and Spirit-led evangelist p Began preaching right after conversion (Acts 9:19-22). p He looked for people of peace (Acts 16:13-15 Lydia) and receptive groups (Acts 18:6 God-fearers). p He used a variety of evangelistic approaches (ind., family, crowd)- Acts 16:25-33, Acts 13:44; 14:1; 19:9-10.
Paul was a visionary leader and strategist p Vision and call from God- Acts 9:15; Rom. 15: p Received direction from God and led with confidence- Acts 16:6-10. p Added workers and apprentices to his team- Acts 15:40-16:3. p Not afraid to ask others to make sacrifices for the cause of Christ- Acts 15:38, 16:2-3. p Proactive strategist who established reproducible church planting pattern- Acts 13:14 ff., 14:1, 17:2.
Paul was a team player & team builder. p He was willing to be on a team- Acts 13:1-5. p He always planted with a team- Acts 15:40; 16:6; 20:4. p He had a sending base church to which he reported- Acts 14:26-28.
Paul was a pioneer (a flexible risk-taker). p He constantly penetrated new territory (Rom. 15:20). p He targeted a new group (Rom. 11:1). p He pioneered new methods of ministry (Acts 13 ff). p He adapted his strategy to his ministry group (1 Cor. 9:19-21).
Paul discipled people and cared for them. p He invested personally in the lives of people (Acts 20:31). p He was like a nursing mother and an encouraging father 1 Thess. 2:7-11). p He was vitally concerned with the growth and development of converts (Acts 14:22). p He drew close to coworkers (2 Tim. 1:2).
Paul was perseverant. He stayed on course. p He stayed with God s calling and vision- Acts 14:19-20; 2 Cor. 11: p He never backed down, and he never gave up- Acts 14: p He maintained a thankful attitude in the face of cruel and unfair treatment-acts 16:25.
Paul equipped and empowered others p In order to lead this rapidly growing movement, he risked delegation to young Christians (Acts 16:1-3). p His team planted churches on their first missionary journey and then a few months later came back to these new churches and appointed elders (Acts 13:13, 21; 14:21-23). p He recognized his own strengths and weaknesses and delegated to others according to their strengths (Titus 1:5).
Paul was willing to let go and move on to plant more p It seems that he needed special direction to stay in a city for very long- Acts 18:9-11, 1 Cor. 16: 8-9. p He trusted churches to reproduce- Rom. 15:20. p He had faith in God's ability to keep the churches he started strong- Acts 20:32. p He let his best teammates leave his team for the sake of the kingdom of God- Acts 17:14.
Visionary Leader, Strategist Uniquely Prepared Let go & Moved on Effective Evangelist Perseverance Stayed the course Team Player & Team Builder Paul s Example as an Apostolic Church Planter Equipped & Empowered Others Pioneer Flexible Risk- Taker Discipled & cared for People
Personal & Ministry Assessment 1. Which are most needed in your region: apostolic, pastoral or catalytic planters? 2. What is your calling? Has God called you to remain or to plant and move on? 3. For Church Planters: Which of the 5 Ms best describes my role now? 4. What Pauline qualities do I need and want to seek God for at this time?
