THIS PIONEER LIONS ROAR IS DEDICATED TO PAST ROAR EDITOR DON PECK WHO PASSED AWAY SATURDAY, APRIL 7, A short fortune teller escaped from prison. The headline read: SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE. THE FOLLOWING REMEMBRANCE WAS WRITTEN BY PRE GIL WHITE: Fellow Lions, on Saturday, April 7, 2007, shortly before noon, Donald Peck passed away and we lost a Good Lion, Good Member and I lost a Good Friend. Past ROAR editor Don Peck was full of humor and always enjoyed a good joke. For several months Don has been ill and lately his illness was complicated by a stroke. Don was the kind of a guy you could talk to and if he didn t agree with you he was ready to let you know. He expressed words of encouragement to me personally when I was going through some difficult times. Otherwise, I would have no longer been a member of the finest Lion s Club in the Multiple District. Don, who was a Melvin Jones Fellow, had been Editor of the ROAR for over twenty years and I had the pleasure and privilege of working with him for many of those years. Don s love of Big Band music was only exceeded by the love he had for his wife Anne and his family. Gil White Our Secretary Ken Botero wrote the following Pioneer Lion history and tribute for Don. President Pat read this at the meeting. Thanks to Ken for adding this to his weekly hour of secretarial bliss: We are grateful to have had the opportunity to serve alongside our beloved brother Lion Extraordinaire Donald S. Peck who not only served his fellow Lions but also gave his all to our community. May he rest in peace and comfort of the Lord and may we always carry his spirit with us.
Longview Pioneer Lions Donald S. Peck became a member of the Pioneer Lions Club, under the sponsorship of Lion Bruce McDaniel in May of Don was the assistant principal at Mark Morris High School at the time of his initiation into the Pioneer Lions Club. Don served as chairman of the Education committee from 1975 to He served as editor of the Pioneer Lions Club bulletin for 22 years dating from 1983 to Don served on the Board of Directors for the Longview Pioneer Lions from 1982 to 1984 and again as director from 1985 to As Roar Editor, he also had a position on the Board for 22 years. Don received many awards while serving the Longview Pioneer Lions Club such as: Multiple District 19 Bulletin Award Lion of the Year G Bulletin Editor Award (5 years in a row) Lion of the Month February 1995 Unsung Lion of the Month May 2004 Don served as a worthy Tail Twister Don had perfect attendance while serving in the Longview Pioneer Lions Club dating back to his initiation in July of (34 years). He also received the Key Award for initiating two members, his son Lion Larry Peck, and Lion Graham Cross. Don always had a way of making sure that new members always felt welcome and that each of them were recognized at the earliest opportunities. His Lion Profile articles in the ROAR introduced us to our new members in his own special way. May we as Lions always have Don s spirit to guide and help us meet our goals. FROM YOUR SCRIBE I will be brief in light of the good words from Gil and Ken. Although I have been writing the ROAR for the last couple years, Don has been at my side every week that he could attend and that was most of them. He still wrote up the Happy Bucks to cover me, wrote a profile when a member submitted one and had several puns together for me from which to choose. Don was a caring and compassionate man who gave of himself freely, not only to the Longview Pioneer Lions, but to many other organizations to which he belonged. He will be missed, his smile, his wit, his Susan B. Anthony dollars, and even his puns. Via con Dios, Don. The following Lions had a Remembrance Dollar for PRE Don Peck: George Moore, Marie Specht, Cindy and Jim Sessions, Janice Hillman, Jim Reinecke, Mike Parker, Les Rousch, Bob Brasaemle, John Claypool, Brandt Boswell, Hal Palmer, Mark Koelsch, Tom Riffe, Dr. Tom Little, Kurt Sacha, Ruth Morrill, Laura Moore, Tom Monahan, Lee Edtl, Rick Little, LeeRoy Parcel, Terry Woodruff, Ken Botero, Daryl McDaniel, Brian Pacsuta and Pat Palmer. Next week, George Moore will be in attendance and will pass the hat in Don s memory. Proceeds will be donated to the Northwest Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation in Don s name. GUESTS April 9 th, 2007 We had a much better turn out than the prior week. Two Castle Rock Lions crashed the party, none other than PZC Garey Wood and his sidekick, Lion Don Powell. Lion Steve Williams introduced his guest, Eric Bjerkman. PZC Gary Hill was hosting Linda Manning, who apparently didn t get enough of us last week. Now, that s hard to believe. Bruce Fischer was introduced by our resident giant, PP Rick Little. Our last guest was introduced by VDG Mark Koelsch who was hosting Carol Craig, Executive Director of the Canterbury Inn. She is a prospective member. Lion Joe Daggy introduced our guest speaker, Horace J. Digby, at the beginning of the program. This is a little more Lion-like of us Pioneer. Let s bring more visitors next week. A pun is the shortest distance between two straight lines. LEADERS April 9 th, 2007 Song Leader Pat Riffe led us in America. The leader of the Pledge of Allegiance was Lion Cathy Leedy (good to see you back at club). PP Rick Little gave the Invocation, including a special prayer for the Peck family. Thanks, Lions, for leading us in the business portion of our gathering. LIONS OF THE MONTH OF MARCH Tracey McDaniel and Laura Moore Two of the main reasons that the Spaghetti Feed was so successful was that the Committee Chair and her assistants were making sure that all the bases were covered. Tracey hosted many meetings and all directives and procedures were written down in black and white long before the event was to take place. One would barely recognize this as a Pioneer Lion s fun(d)raiser. Laura Moore was Tracey s second in command and provided needed help and support with the planning and execution of the event. Tracey and Laura, thanks for being a great event duo and keeping this one on the straight and narrow. It made it much easier for those who were on the subcommittees and all who worked the event. We appreciate your leadership.
UNSUNG LIONS OF THE MONTH OF MARCH Deena Martinsen and Vicki Wellenbrock were the raffle basket leaders who went out and bought the goods and packaged them. The Raffle was a large part of the monies earned by the Spaghetti Feed. All of the items were attractively displayed and there were many winners who said they were pleased with their baskets. Thanks to Vicki and Deena for your hard work on this portion of this event. We appreciate your time and talents which made the Raffle so successful. UNSUNG LION OF THE MONTH OF JANUARY LINDA BOUFFORD Don t know how this could have happened Lions, but apparently, Linda wasn t here for the presentation of her award and it languished in someone s briefcase briefly well for at least a couple months. Linda justly deserves this award because so much of what she does is behind the scenes. She worked on the Salvation Army Bell Ringing project and helped out with the Christmas social. She is always there when you need help, recently shooting pictures for the ROAR in Bill LaVigne s extended snow bird absence. Thanks, Linda, for all you do for the Pioneer Lions. We appreciate it. BOARD NOTES Today your Board of Directors approved three prospective Lions for membership, subject to payment of initiation fees and dues. They included Longview Police Officer Cindy Turpin who is sponsored by PDG Hal Palmer. Carol Craig, Executive Director of the Canterbury Inn, is sponsored by VDG Mark Koelsch and Lion Joe Daggy, yes you heard it here first, Joe Daggy is sponsoring Linda Manning, operations manager at KLTV. Another great group of prospects, Lions. LONGVIEW PIONEER LIONS SLATE OF OFFICERS 2007 and 2008 PP Steve Patterson announced the slate of officers for the coming Pioneer Lions year: Third VP Janice Hillman, 2 nd VP Daryl McDaniel, 1 st VP Don Harris, President Brian Pacsuta, Immediate Past President Pat Palmer. Lion Tamers Pat Riffe, Gary Hill and Harold Malone. Tail Twisters Deena Martinsen, Laura Moore and Mike Firth. One year Directors Greg Firth, Rick Little, Dan Twiss and Alex Nelson. Two year Directors Tom Monahan, Dick Sorenson, Ruth Morrill and Steve Johnston. Secretary Ken Botero. Song Leader Barry Morrill. Roar Editor John Claypool. Web Master Bill LaVigne. These nominees will be announced at meetings and posted in the ROAR for three weeks at which time there will be an election. Keep your ears open. This happens quickly. SPECIAL OLYMPICS- Red Button Lion Patricia Anderson informed the club that we had donated $1000 for the lunches at the Special Olympics. She was going to be passing a sign up sheet around and seeking volunteers for events occurring on April 28 th. She will be getting in touch with us to firm up the where, when and how of the event. The Pioneer Lions have helped with Special Olympics in the past and we are honored to be asked again to help out with this great program. Give the kids a hand if you can Lions. GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING Lion Alex Nelson reported that this Tuesday, April 17, there will be a meeting at Mint Valley Golf Course with Mahlon Moe to set out the particulars of the Pioneer Lions Golf Tournament. This is an important meeting and Alex asks that all members of the committee that can make it, to be there. Thanks, Lions. CABARET Lion Tim South has announced another committee meeting at Daggy & Anagnostou offices at st Ave. It will be at 5:30pm again on Wednesday, the 18th. This is going to be a large endeavor and as many Lions as possible are needed to head up various subcommittees and projects in its regard. Let s get behind this venture, Lions, and make it the best Cabaret ever. THE BUCKS TT s Steve Patterson and Terry Woodruff were on hand for the day s observations. PP Marie Specht had a happy dollar from George Moore who was happy to be back in the good old USA. Marie noted Walt s absence, but was happy he was working on their rental. Cindy Sessions was observing her oldest daughter s 23 rd birthday. PDG Jim Reinecke remembered back when he was President and asked Don Peck to do the ROAR for a couple weeks. Twenty-two years later, Don reluctantly passed the torch... partially. He was also happy about TT Terry Woodruff, a young Lion with dark hair, taking on the Secretary Treasurer post. Scribe John Claypool was happy about golf Friday with his sons and was wondering at his
grandson s being so handsome and intelligent. PDG Hal Palmer had a good visit with his grandchildren. He also remembered one time when Don Peck was speechless. It was when he received his Melvin Jones Fellow award. Hard to believe, eh? PDG Mark Koelsch was happy that a trial that he was scheduled to testify at had been postponed, especially in light of the Spring Conference coming up. Lion Beth Jensen was happy about her grandson s first birthday. LT Dr. Tom Little was sad about the passing of Dr. Roger Grummel. Lion Ron Stoppler was happy with the help he got from members, moving to his new home in Vader. Lion Ralph Young had a story about a broken tail light and a missing boat and trailer. Lion Kurt Sacha had a happy dollar for the good times spent in the desert over spring break. Ruth Morrill was happy to be back from Tucson. She wasn t sure she liked the rain now that she returned. Larry Hansen was happy for his brother, Milt, who was in Hawaii. He also reported on PP Ray Strange who is making a recovery from back surgery. Lion Laura Moore was happy that her new job is going very, very well. PP Rick Little brought his guest who had mistakenly gone to a Rotary meeting first. LT LeeRoy Parcel reported that his daughter, Kimber, had turned 21. TT Terry Woodruff was happy that PDG Jim Reinecke had bought his coffee that morning. Secretary Ken Botero was happy that the Mariner s still had a winning percentage... thanks to the snow outs in Cleveland. Lion Joe Daggy reported that his partner Kurt Anagnostou had studied under Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has been the swing vote in many decisions recently. Joe says to call Kurt if you want any previews on coming rulings. 3 rd VP Daryl McDaniel was looking forward to the Spring Conference. 1 st VP Brian Pacsuta reported that he was back on salary again with Chicago Title. President Pat Palmer was happy to have fixed a motorcycle and a three wheeler. Kim s sister, Katherine, is having a baby. He was happy the way we come together as a group with special thanks to Jack Patten for some special help he had provided to Pat. A bicycle can t stand alone because it is two tired. 19G SPRING CONFERENCE AND MULTIPLE DISTRICT CONFERENCE is this weekend, Friday evening and all day Saturday. This can be a visitation for the Red Buttons who haven t visited another Lions club yet. Also, if you haven t been to a conference or convention, the Club will pay for your cost to attend your first one. Check with PDG Jim Reinecke, the convention chair, and he ll let you know how it works. See you there, Lions. MULTIPLE DISTRICT CONFERENCE - The Multiple District 19 Convention will be in Wenatchee this year on May 17 th through the 20 th. Get your hotel reservation in early. They are filling up fast. PROGRAM April 9 th Program Chair for the Month of April, Lion Joe Daggy introduced Mr. Horace J. Digby, internationally applauded vendor of funny articles extraordinaire. He was the recipient of the Robert Blakely Award. A good friend of our own punster, Don Peck., he reeled off a number of groaners in his honor. Most were so bad that they would have brought a tear to Don s eye. All of the jokes/puns in this edition of the ROAR are to be blamed on Horace. He was nattily attired with a red plaid bowtie. Horace went on to his main theme which dealt with a letter he had received from his son who was in Slovakia. He was hoping to do a service project by teaching English at their university (high school). He noted that most of the people already spoke English, but that they used profanity poorly, misplacing modifiers and losing much of the feel of the obscenities. So, needing the project, his son set out to teach these Slovaks, the proper use of various four letter words. The class was called Cussing as a Second Language. He was a good teacher. His son went on to say that he hoped his Dad was proud of him and he was wondering if he could use this project for one of his endorsements on his application to Whitman. This was good program for this group of Lions. Thanks for keeping it light and in perspective, Joe. We enjoyed it. Democracy: Your vote counts. Feudalism: Your Count votes. FALL FORUM PIN Lion Ron Stoppler, Chair of the 2007 Fall Forum that the Pioneer Lions are hosting, is looking for some pin designs in regard to the event. If you have any ideas, jot them down and submit those to Ron. There s a big reward in it for the winner. VISITATIONS Check with Lion Dan Twiss if you re interested in visiting other clubs. Red Button Lions, remember, a visitation is one of the Big Four requirements for getting your permanent blue badge. Other Visitations will be reported in future editions of your ROAR.
SENILITY According to Secretary Ken Botero. 1 st VP Brian Pacsuta and Scribe John Claypool were offenders. Excessive fines were levied and paid with much grumbling. DRAW THE JOKER Lion Tamer Dr. Tom Little had the paraphernalia for this drawing ready the moment Lion Ralph Young s ticket was drawn. Ralph pulled the third 10 of spades out of the deck and the crowd became a little surly until it was announced that it must be a Pinochle deck. This seemed to make every one happy except Ralph who had not selected the Joker. You can be the Lucky Lion next week if you are at club. Good luck! HONEST POT DRAWING Lion Cindy Sessions had the winning ticket. She quickly deposited her winnings in the Club s White Cane account where it will be of benefit to the site impaired who cannot afford the procedures they need to regain their vision. Thanks, Cindy. LIONS WEAR - LT LeeRoy Parcel wants you to look good while you re putting in your shifts and has T-shirts (long sleeve for $12.00 and short for $10.00 in both blue and yellow), sweat shirts and coats from his suppliers. He had brought a few things to the meeting, but he can t bring them all. So let him know what you re interested in so that LeeRoy can bring what you want to buy. Or stop in and see him at his office at Cascade Title. PRINTER CARTRIDGES: Lion Deena Martinsen has asked us to recycle our empty printer cartridges. The club will receive $4.00 per cartridge for those which can be refurbished. Don t forget this fundraiser, Lions. Ask Deena if you have any questions.
