1 The Spirit Eagle Lake Lutheran Church April 2019 From the Pastor Divine Creator, At the dawn of time, you fashioned an earth Overflowing with life. For six days you labored and on the seventh you Stood back, and you listened to the echo of all creation and Have been listening ever since. We praise and you receive our worship. We cry and you hear our prayer. We lament and you remember us. Your ear is never deaf to our voice; your face Never turned away from us. And now, Creator God, I should like to learn to listen like you. In times of tension, lament, and complaint, keep my ears open to the rumblings of emotions and meaning just underneath the words I hear. May your Spirit swirl freely through my conversations that I may hear all that you would have me hear and understand all that you would have me understand. Amen - Ann M. 2 Join us April for a week of remembering God s greatest action for the sake of the world. This week takes us from Jesus triumphant entry to Jerusalem through the celebration of the Lord s Supper and the shock of Jesus betrayal and arrest to the darkness of Jesus crucifixion, death and burial. Out of the darkness, comes the bright light of Easter as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus and our resurrection to new life in God. Palm/Passion Sunday April 14th 10:15am Maundy Thursday April 18th Worship 6:30pm Beginning with a procession of palm branches we tell the story of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem eventually leading to his death as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. On this night of remembering Jesus Last Supper with his disciples, we will hear his invitation to join him at the table. Communion will be served to share in this precious gift of forgiveness and life. Easter Breakfast An Easter Breakfast will be served following the Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 21st. Menu will include Egg Bake, Muffins, Juice and Coffee. Serving from 8:30-9:45am Please plan to join us! Mary Circle is in charge of the breakfast but If you would like to help set-up, serve or clean up, contact the office or there is a sign up sheet on the table in the narthex. JOIN US FOR THE LENTEN SEASON On Wednesdays during the Lenten season, join us for Holden Evening Prayer on April 3rd and th 10. Worship Service at 6:30pm. There will be Soup Suppers at 5:15pm. No supper planned for Maundy Thursday. The Community Good Friday service on April 19th at 2:00 PM will be held at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church. Annual Easter Egg/Candy Hunt Saturday April 20th It is a free event! Children up to 6th grade are invited. We begin at 10 a.m. sharp! We have an area for the younger kids and from the hill up to the main chapel for the older kids. After the hunt we gather and share the Easter Story with the symbols of Easter we find in the eggs!! Eagle Lake Church Council Meeting Wednesday - March 13 th Members Present: Scott Larson, Jeff Olson, Shirley Olson, John Olson, Aaron Bengtson, John Doeden, Marlys Jackson, John Kent, Pastor Steve Peterson Meeting Called to Order: President Scott Larson at 5:09 pm Motion made and passed to approve agenda Devotions: Pastor Steve Secretary s Report: John Kent reviewed last months report. Motion Made by John O. seconded by Aaron B. to accept report, motion carried. Treasurer s Report: Shirley Olson reviewed report - Discussion of giving and how missing the two Sunday s due to weather affected our financial status. Motion made to approve treasurer s report by Jeff O. Seconded by Aaron B. Motion carried Pastor Steve s Report: Getting better acquainted with our church. Positive experience with visitation of church members. Discussion of future events Communication / Sharing / Comments / Discussion: - Discussion of moving annual meeting to summer months - Possibility of two annual meetings - Special congregational meeting in June to ratify for the next summer - Motion made by Marlys J. Sponsor other programs for food services. Motion made by Scott L. Seconded by Shirley O. to politely decline the offer. Motion carried. - Interim strategy development and communication: May 5th Congregational Conversation 4:00-7:00 Sunday afternoon - This will be a congregational conversation about the interim period between regularly called pastors, regarding our congregational life and mission. - Eagle Lake is hosting Good Friday services starting at 2:00 pm - Scott L. mentioned that there is a $1000 dollar grant available for some local area church. 4 STAMP CAMP AT FAITH HAVEN April 5-7 th th Come out to Camp for a Creative, Productive and Refreshing weekend away in a relaxing atmosphere- stay up late and work on your projects or sleep in. Come a day early and begin the fun or come just for Saturday!! There are so many stamps and gadgets for you to use for free- dry embossing, fancy scissors, punches, etc. We will have ideas for card making and samples to copy as well. Bring your papers and projects, fabric and ideas and lets get started!! PioneerCare Auxiliary is hosting a Spaghetti Lunch Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 3rd, 11:00 am to 1:30 pm in the care center s Garden Court. All are invited and free will donations. You can find us under Eagle Lake Lutheran Church. Check it out! NEW MEMBER SUPPER MEETING There will be a New Member supper/meeting on Tuesday, April 23rd starting at 5:00 PM. If you are interested in joining Eagle Lake or know someone who is interested, please let the office or Pastor Steve know. New Member Sunday is planned for May 5th. If you re a Thrivent Financial member, you can lead a Thrivent Action Team to bring people together for a one-time project to help others be wise with money and live generously. You can coordinate an educational event, conduct a service activity, or organize a fundraiser. Thrivent will provide resources to help you plan the event, promotional items, including Thrivent T-shirts and a Community Impact Card with $250 of seed money. Thrivent Financial members can apply for 2 Thrivent Action Teams a year. We have lots of activities and ministries that we do together that would be eligible we just need to coordinate our efforts, for only one Thrivent member can apply per event, so if you plan to apply for grant please let the church office know so we can make full use of this opportunity. Learn more at PROPOSED CHANGES ARE BEING CONSIDERED FOR DATE OF ANNUAL MEETING At the March 13th church council meeting there was a discussion regarding the possibility of moving the regular annual meeting of Eagle Lake to the summer time in response to the following questions and concern: Why do we have to have our annual meeting in January when so many people ae away? Wouldn t it be better to have the annual meeting at another time perhaps June? There was interest in the council in exploring calling a special congregational meeting in June, probably right after a Sunday morning worship service, to propose a change in the bylaws that would move the regular annual meeting time to June. Because this would be a bylaw change, not a change in the constitution, this change would simply require a quorum present with a two-thirds vote and could take effect in June of If such a change in the bylaws is proposed and passed at a special congregational meeting, this would mean current council members would be serving an additional 5 months. Conversation will continue regarding this matter at the April 10th council meeting with the possibility of a special meeting date and a specific proposal being set by the council at that time. BAKED POTATO BAR Sunday, April 14th Hosted by the Men s Group The Men s Group is hosting a Baked Potato Bar following the worship service on Sunday, April 14th. A Baked Potato with all the fixing! Dear OTC-LYO partner congregation, I really appreciate your pitching in for funds for me to attend the Extravaganza. It was a wonderful trip filled with energizing conversations with youth ministers in my network. Your contribution gave me the opportunity to connect with others in the ELCA youth ministry network. I attended six different workshops. My favorite was titled 10 Best Relational Method Ministries. Each day there were two mass gatherings, and the theme was Disruption. The mood was impactful, and deeply thought out. One of my favorite quotes from the mass gatherings came from Jeff Chu, who said, "How dare you sing a song of resurrection if you never speak of death?". He was a speaker who had wished his youth minister had reached out more to him throughout his young adult life. Because of this, an opportunity was missed to tell him how loved he was, and he grew up not realizing that he too was worthy of God s grace and love. This impacted me and helped me realize that I never want to miss the chance to reach out to anyone in need of compassion, love and understanding. It inspires me deeply to feel equipped at all times, and is a constant reminder of the impact I make, and I hope passes onto others. Speaking out truth in ministry isn t always easy, but God is always present and loves us no matter who we are. It helps to know how others do ministry across America.
