Southeast Asia: Two upright and one coffin case filled with items from the Philippines, Malaysia, Irian Jaya, Thialand, Cambodia, New Guinea, and Micronesia. ( ). American Veterans of Foreign Wars: A display of WWII relics, writings, pictures and other paraphernalia involving the entire library and using four full cabinets of displays. This was tied to a day-long kick-off patriotic program open to the public and local schools. ( ). Folklore of the American West: Eighteen linear feet of shelving filled with vernacular art forms depicting the Western spirit. ( ). Native American: 12 foot-long cabinet filled with artifacts from among various tribes of the West and American Southwest: Ute, Pueblo, Papago, Navajo, Shoshone, Cheyenne, Paiute. (2002-present). Field Studies: Collected for preservation historic photos and relics associated with the locally famous Toyack building in Roosevelt, Utah, the self-built home of the FFA Chapter during the Great Depression era; since demolished. 7 1995 Taught and then encouraged student Elizabeth King to seek employment as a librarian with the Uintah County Library, Vernal, Utah; she was successful. Innovations Applied to Classroom Instruction: Digitizing and creating PowerPoint slides to go with my Eng/Hist 2210 Intro to Folklore class Developed and implemented fully operational Online Hist.1700 American Civilization course. Digitized and prepared 1440 PowerPoint slides for my USU 1300 American Institutions Class. Digitized and prepared 1200 PowerPoint slides for use in my USU 1320 B.H. History of Spain class. Collected accouterment, staff, water bottle, par fleche bag and traditional scallop shell to illustrate the pilgrim walk to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, incorporated into History of Spain class. Incorporate authentic Spanish Stew into History of Spain class. Incorporate slave food section into Am. Civ. classes. Use atlatl spear thrower for hands-on demonstration of ancient Tools. Use actual collected implements from several cultures around the world to foster interest in a discussion of diachronic vs synchronic perspectives of expressive culture theory. Implemented a traveling classroom, taking students on a tour to view and discuss elements of built culture and sense of place. Established Student Folklore Archive at the USU-Uintah Basin Campus. Provide for students a collection of folk art and material culture. Host Ethnic Picnic tasters table of traditional foods. Perform a retinue of folksongs as part of my lecture on that genre and encourage class participation. Host Harold B. Lee Library practicum excursion
8 Language: Spanish Library Services and Development: (Since starting with USU Uintah Basin, I have overseen all library services and development, including but not limited to the following) Have created growth within the library that has taken it from its original 750 square foot room into a new, state-of-the-art 3,500 square foot. Act as librarian for student body of nearly 1,500 students and 25 faculty, helping an average daily count of 211 students and faculty with their research needs. Maintain close working relationship with USU s Distance Education Library Services (DELS) for additional document deliver to our off-campus students and faculty. Provide library outreach to other entities through three Library Services Agreements: Uintah Basin Applied Technology. College Library Services Partnership Agreement; USU Libraries Reciprocal Loan Agreement; and Distance Education Library Services Loaning Agreement. Have supervised 12 different Work Study Students over the course of 25 fifteen-week semesters for a total of 7,500 hours. Supervised those who worked on cataloguing project entered into with USU Library Services, cataloguing all holdings at the USU Uintah Basin campus library. Help oversee Testing Center, housed in the library at USU Uintah Basin. Facilitated Accreditation of USU Uintah Basin Library by National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission. Started a Friends of the Library initiative for Uintah Basin Library. Member of Building Committee and furnishings task force for the new Student Center and library facility; organized and
9 carried out the Library Open House. Maintained Library Rooms on both the Roosevelt and Vernal campuses of USU Uintah Basin for 7 years. Brought into my tenure track 4½ years library experience. Holdings, Acquisitions, and Other Library Improvements: Increased Library stacks ten-fold: (from 1500 items to 15,989), acquiring collections from noted writers and professors such as S. George Ellsworth, Leonard J. Arrington, and Dr. Jack Brotherson. Established a Special Collections now surpassing 10,000 items, including 309 books and artifacts dealing with local and regional history, heritage, and folklore. Established Folklore Archive which has grown to over 3,500 written and 250 material pieces. Produced 18 didactic displays within the library itself Created 148 square feet of showcase displays outside the library Arranged donation of 55 sections of new library shelving to go in new library Negotiated for and executed 1½ year long cataloging project classifying all holdings in USU Uintah Basin Library Successfully interfaced with USU Libraries Systems to get electronic search and circulation system in place Acquired for the library a first ever photocopier Built in home shop 18 sections of shelving for the Vernal Center library room. Made agreement with USU Libraries for portion of books donated to them. Student and Faculty Library Literacy Training Jenson, H. Bert. A Library So Close You Can Touch It. Created library information insert for syllabi, for use by instructors. Met with USU President Kermit Hall and his Roads Scholar tour, introducing them to our library Instituted a Library News bulletin board Taught to date 17 sections of Library Skills INST 1000 (see teaching) Hosted to date 17 weekend excursions to Harold B. Lee Library on the BYU campus for practicum exercise. Librarian Outreach in Support of Other Libraries: Member Duchesne County Library Board, Duchesne County, Utah (2011 to present). Facilitated donation of 300 issues of three different vintage Uintah Basin newspapers covering 10 years publication and dating to over 100 years ago, to the University of Utah Newspaper Project. Between 1998 and 2010, provided over 100 book loans per year to Utah State University s main campus in Logan and to various students in the RCDE program.
11 Participated in Utah Academic Libraries Consortium annual fact finding tour, dedicated to enhancing delivery of library materials and information throughout the State. Serve as Chair-Elect of the Utah Library Association s Archive, Manuscripts, and Special Collections Committee (AMSC). Extend services and support for programs at local libraries at public schools, the Ute Tribe, and Uintah County and Roosevelt City, i.e., the Vernal Express indexing project at Uintah County Library; grant writing at the Ute Tribe Library; and historic displays at the local Middle School, no name a few. Have placed with various libraries and institutions of learning within the State, thousands of books and other materials, and extended service and support to libraries outside the State of Utah by placing for distribution by LDS Humanitarian Services Division, complete classroom sets of discontinued student texts. Have made 16 presentations in libraries to reading guilds and belles-lettres clubs. Educational Outreach to Local Schools/Community: Wrote letter of support for Dennis Manning grant application to establish a Ferrier school at his shop, The Forge, in Ioka, Utah. (2008). Counseled and shared information with author Gary Weicks, helping him in the writing of his book Forgotten Dispatches of the Ghost Road Guardians: Troops, Rangers, and other Strangers Tending the Talking Wire Along the Historic Carter Military Road (2007). Counseled and shared information with Steve and Maureen Tanner in the writing of their book History of Nine Mile Canyon (2008). Organized and carried out the Veterans Day Commemoration Program, involving extensive military memorabilia exhibitions, vintage model airplanes, patriotic speech and flag ceremony, and movies. Local primary schools participated in a poster and history collecting program and were brought in busses to participate. Over 300 townspeople and students participated. (2005).
