4 OLD TESTAMENT READING Exodus 17:8-16 (NKJV) 8 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under 15 heaven. And Moses built an altar and called its name, The Lord Is My Banner; 16 for he said, "Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation. 5 NEW TESTAMENT READING John 4:1-13 (NKJV) LEADER: CONG: LEADER: CONG: ALL: Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But He needed to go through Samaria. So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob s well was there. Jesus there fore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink. For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water. The woman said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock? Jesus answered and said to her, Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again. 5

11 When we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize, honor and acknowledge the contributions and achievements of those who went before us. Jefferson Franklin Long (March 3, 1836 February 4, 1901) was born in Crawford County Georgia. He was born a slave to his black mother and white father. Long was an American politician from Georgia, who taught himself to read and write, which was illegal. He became a successful merchant tailor in Macon, Georgia. To fill the vacancy caused when Samuel F. Gove was declared not entitled to the seat, Long was elected as a Republican to the 41st Congress. He served from January 16, 1971 until March 3, Because of anti-reconstruction efforts by the white-majority Georgia GOP, Long was not a candidate for re-nomination. However, he served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Long was the second African American sworn into the US House of Representatives, and the only African American to represent Georgia until Andrew Young was elected in He was the first African American to speak on the floor of the US House, opposing the Amnesty Bill. The Amnesty Bill exempted former Confederates serving in the House from swearing allegiance to the Constitution. Despite Long's brief tenure in the US House, he was able to promote several Reconstruction efforts. 11
