3 102nd ANNUAL REPORT, 1956 Six general meetings of the Society were held, at which the following papers were read: 27 January Mrs. A. K. B. Evans, B.A., Ph.D., F.R.Hist.S.: "Romano-British 23 II l 12 March May June October 7 December Towns". H. F. Owen Evans, Esq., M.B.E., F.S.A. : "Monumental Brasses". M. W. Barley, Esq., M.A., F.S.A.: "Domestic Architecture in the Midlands". Annual General Meeting at the University College. Graham Webster, Esq., M.A., F.S.A., A.M.1.C.E., A.M.A.: "The Roman Military Advance, A.D ". Cecil Farthing, Esq., F.S.A.: Britain". In addition, three informal meetings were held: "Historic Buildings in Post~War 21 April The Hon. Secretary: "How to enjoy Excursions". 26 October Professor J. Simmons, M.A.: "The Publications of the Society", 16 November Visit to the City and County Record Offices. At the Annual General Meeting Mr. Colin D. B. Ellis and Mr. C. L. Wykes were appointed Trustees of the Society. The Committee met ten times in the course of the year. It voted a grant of 5 in aid of the appeal by the Northamptonshire Record Society for the purchase of Delapre Abbey. The Society published Miss N. R. Whitcomb's book The Medieval Floor-Tiles of Leicestershire on 1 June. It has been well received. The Archaeological Journal concluded a most friendly review with the remark that "the book, as a whole, is a model of thoroughness and methodical arrangement, and shows how far the study of medieval tiles has developed since the term 'encaustic tile' covered practically the whole subject". During the year, 45 new members were elected, and 25 resigned or died. Excursions Four excursions were held in The first, to Cold Overton, Whissendine, and Burton Lazars, was conducted by Mr. J. A. Daniell. The company, 59 strong, assembled at Cold Overton and were kindly shown over the fine Jacobean Hall by Mr. A. S. Gray in two parties, the others meanwhile viewing the church. Tea was served at the Crown Hotel, Oakham, and afterwards members proceeded to Whissendine, where they were welcomed by the vicar, the Rev. W. Spreadbury. They then went on to Burton Lazars. The Rev. Canon C. M. S. Clarke and the wardens displayed some of the church accounts and demonstrated that the bells, since recasting, are no longer unmelodious. Special attention was drllwn to the unusual Squire monument in the churchyard. Funds for its repair have recently been raised by Melton Mowbray people in conjunction with the Georgian Group, this Society also making a small contribution. Despite a winterly chill, members much enjoyed the afternoon and were most grateful to Mr. Daniell for his sympathetic guidance. In July Professor J. Simmons conducted a whole-day excursion into Lincolnshire. The party, 49 in number, assembled at Heckington, where they were welcomed by the vicar, the Rev. H. J. N. Skelton. Professor Simmons placed this noble church in its setting among the finest in the country, and members spent an enjoyable time looking at its most striking features. They then proceeded, through a sizeable thunder-storm, to Boston, where the sun was already mopping up the puddles. The vicar of St. Botolph's, the Rev. Canon E. K. Ellis, greeted the party, and Professor Simmons explained how the prosperity of the port of Boston in the Middle Ages made the building of this marvellous church both possible and necessary. He also spoke of the part played by later Lincolnshire men in the founding 9

4 LEICESTERSHIRE ARCH 0LOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY of colonies both in America and in Australia. Members spent some time looking at the church, especially the carved misericords; it is believed that a few intrepid spirits climbed the tower. After lunch the company proceeded to Tattershall, where the castle was thoroughly inspected. At the church the party was welcomed by the vicar, the Rev. Canon N. W. Hagger, who opened up the north transept, so that the brasses might be seen to advantage. Tea was served at the Golf Hotel, Woodhall Spa. Here Mr. David Clarke proposed a vote of thanks to Professor Simmons for his illuminating guidance throughout a highly enjoyable day and to Mrs. Skillington for making the arrangements. The August outing, to Althorp and_ Northampton, was attended by 54 members and friends. Lord Spencer conducted the party over the house at Althorp, and they greatly enjoyed its many beauties, especially the splendid array of portraits. They then went on to Northampton, to have tea at the Wedgwood Cafe. Afterwards Miss N. R. Whitcomb took the company over All Saints Church, an impressive example of seventeenth and eighteenth-century building and equipment, and the strongly contrasted St. Peter's. Here the vicar, the Rev. L. J. Chybnalle, met the party and lighted up the church so that its delightful Norman carving could be properly appreciated. Mrs. Skillington thanked Miss Whitcomb for her expert and kindly guidance. In September Mr. David Clarke conducted an excursion into south-west Leicestershire. Between 50 and 60 people visited Elmesthorpe, Potters Marston (a once moated site), Claybrooke, and Peatling Magna, with a passing glance at the Roman sites at Sapcote and High Cross. This was a stimulating afternoon, and the Society is most grateful to Mr. Clarke for all he did to make it so enjoyable. Mr. Clarke also arranged an informal outing in October to three Victorian churches in Leicester. Col. J. F. A. Pitcairn, Diocesan Secretary, kindly opened the now "redundant" Christ Church, over which the little company could shed no tears; they then moved on to St. Matthew's and St. Mark's. It is a matter for satisfaction that municipal policy will now allow these two churches, excellent examples of a perhaps insufficiently appreciated period, to serve a returned population. Donations were made from the Excursions Fund to the churches visited. IO
