E.D. Cahoon and J.H. Marshall both graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Marshall became a doctor of medicine with a degree from the University of the City of New York in T hree men, originally from Delaware, followed different paths but ended by building what Becky Terry once described in the Peconic Bay Shopper as three imposing mansions side by side on the bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, backed by Soundview Avenue, Southold. The first home to be built was that of Dr. J.H. Marshall of Brooklyn. He had purchased a large tract of property from Phineas Fanning of Southold. Soon after, Dr. Marshall sold part of his property to his brother-in-law, Edward Daley Cahoon, also of Brooklyn. Last built was the enormous estate of Alfred Huston Cosden. One of the brick houses was for Cosden s brother William who was superintendent of the estate, the other was for the chauffeur, gardener and other employees. Horses were a passion of Cosden (here the stables). In 1928, Cosden s thoroughbred colt, Vito, won the Belmont Stakes as a 10-1 underdog.
