1 Dear Teacher/Librarian, September is finally here, and everyone's back to school! I can hear some students groan... "finally here"? they say! More like "it's upon us! RUN! Hide!" But don't worry! Your teachers have lots of new things to teach you! And TumbleBooks is here to help! We're back with our monthly newsletter, highlighting

2 some of our favorite TumbleBooks titles that coincide with holidays, events, remembrances, and favourite birthdays in September. We're all over the map this month. From the International Day of Peace on the 21st, to Talk Like a Pirate Day on the 19th... there's something for everyone! Note: previous versions of this calendar included the seemingly innocuous "Chicken Day"... but we decided to leave it off in case we offended Louise, or Coriander... two resident Tumble-Chickens (from "Louise: The Adventures of a Chicken" and "Coriander the Contrary Hen")... Shhhhhh...We learned that "Chicken Day" is for eating chicken... which is all well and good if you're so inclined, but please don't tell Louise and Coriander! This is a monthly newsletter. If there are other teachers in your school or district who might be interested in receiving our TumbleBooks This Month newsletter, please reply to this with their contact information. We will only use their for this specific newsletter and no other. September: Classical Music Month! September is a month to celebrate classical music! But try not to wreak as much havoc as Pecorino! September: Little League Month! Baseball is one of the most accessible and enjoyable sports to play at any age, and it's fitting that September is the month in which we celebrate little league players who are just starting out! Take pride in your skill, and in everything you've learned this summer, but be careful not to end up like Casey in this classic poem by Ernest Thayer! *Please note that this title is available on Premium subscriptions only. September: National Piano Month!

3 The piano wasn't Oscar Peterson's first choice: he initially wanted to play the trumpet, until a sickness turned him toward the piano. But the PIANO is what made him famous! Read "Oscar Lives Next Door" and learn about the boy who grew up into the world famous (and Canadian-born) pianist! September 4:Labor Day (USA) and Labour Day (Canada) Labor Day - or "Labour Day" as we say in Canada - is a day to celebrate the achievements of the labor movement, and the people that pushed for workers' rights (like the 5-day work week, and safety regulations). "I've Been Working on the Railroad" is a classic TumbleTune that is sure to energize you and celebrate the hard work of your fore-fathers and -mothers. September 5: BACK TO SCHOOL! The day after Labor Day is the day when the last batch of students officially go back to school! "First Day Jitters" is one of this Tumbler's favorite back-toschool books ever! We won't spoil the surprise, in case you haven't read it yet, but we highly recommend this book to help settle your new and nervous students into the class! September 6: Read A Book Day Have you ever wondered what it would be like to read a book to a Rabbit or a Kangaroo or a Hippo? Well, even they might like to read a book on a day like today! But maybe, just stick to reading to younger siblings, or the family pet, and read this book instead! September 7: Born on this Day: Queen Elizabeth I ( )

4 Queen Elizabeth I was born on this date in If she was alive today, she'd be 484 years old! As one of the longest reigning monarchs in the history of the British Empire, Elizabeth oversaw a rather tumultuous period... But I'm fairly confident that she didn't face any dragons - or rescue any princes named Ronald - like the Paper Bag Princess did (who was also named Elizabeth!) September 8: International Literacy Day Celebrate the importance of literacy by taking a trip to the library with young Lola! September 10: Grandparents' Day It's a wonderful priviledge to have caring Grandparents in your life! If you're lucky enough to have some in your life, give them a great big hug today, in honor of Grandparents' Day! September 11: 9/11 Remebrance Day September 11, 2001 is a very sad day in the history of the United States. It will be a sensitive topic to discuss in class for many years to come. TumbleBooks debated which book to present in our newsletter on this date, and finally chose the TumbleTune "The More We Get Together". This choice is not to make light of the historical importance of the day. Rather, we chose this book to show the light in the world... the light that will never fade as long as there's love, friendship, and unity in the world.

5 September 12: Born on this Day: Jesse Owens ( ) Jesse Owens was an American track and field star who was born on September 12, He inspired a nation by winning four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games, in Germany. Although we don't have a book about him right now, we thought you might like a book about another African American athlete: the baseball-superstar, Josh Gibson. September 13: National Peanut Day! Peanuts are a tasty and versatile legume! But unfortunately they're not for everyone. Some people have such severe allergies to peanuts, that they've been banned from many schools and other public places. So while today is a day to celebrate the modest peanut, we should also take the time to raise allergy awareness with the TumbleBooks classic "No Nuts For Me!". September 16: Mexican Independence Day! September 16th is the date when the Mexican War for Independence was triggered. Also known as "The Cry of Dolores": the day when a priest from a town called Dolores rang his church's bell as a call to arms. Themes of finding independence and affirming your true identity are mirrored in "The Best Mariachi in the World": Gustavo wants nothing more than to be in a Mariachi band, but has trouble finding his place until one day, he finds his voice! September 19: National Talk Like A Pirate Day!

6 Aarrrr, me mateys! Did ye be knowin' that this day, 'tis a day like no other? Aarrr!! Aye! On the 19th day of ol' September, we be talkin' like yon pirates, matey! Aarr!! September 21: International Day of Peace Joseph is a young boy who was displaced from his homeland by war, and found a new home in America, as a refugee. He is a cheerful and determined little boy, who flourishes amid new experiences, challenges, and finding friendship in his new home. On the International Day of Peace, Joseph serves as a beacon of hope for younger generations as well as old. September 22: Autumnal Equinox Fall is here! The days are getting shorter, and the weather is getting cooler. Are you ready for winter? I hope so! "Tops and Bottoms" is a playful re-telling of the Grasshopper and the Ant, where the lazy bear takes advantage of the resourceful hare, until he learns his lesson the hard way. September 23: Dogs in Politics Day! President Obama had "Bo", and the two Presidents Bush had "Millie" and "Barney" respectively. Dogs are "man's best friend" because they keep us grounded, and show us what unconditional love looks like! So it's rather reassuring to know that the people who hold the most power in the world have a trusty pup by their side! In "War Dogs" we follow British Prime Minister Winston Churchill through the trials and tribulations of the Second World War through the eyes and ears of his faithful compainion: a poodle named Rufus!

7 September 26: National Good Neighbor Month (or Neighbour!) Neighbors - or Neighbours (there's that Candian spelling again!) - come in all types and sizes! In the animal world you might have a honey bee hive in a tree near a sparrow nest. Or, neighbors might be two apartments side by side on the 45th floor! And, of course they can also be two houses side by side. But on a GRAND scale, the United States and Canada are the BIGGEST and BEST neighbors around! Through thick and thin... we've always been there to lend each other a cup of sugar... (so to speak!) So take a trip and go just a little "crazy"! Check out your neighbour to the north, or your neighbor to south! September 29: World Heart Day On World Heart Day we celebrate the importance of heart health! Check out this National Geographic video that outlines how the heart works to keep the blood puping in your veins.
