I value the amount of time volunteers and staff commit to their duties and feel that running an efficient meeting benefits the members in attendance, the agenda and the work needing to be accomplished. I currently work part-time with an organization that allows me to set my work week schedule. This would allow me to schedule my time as synod vice-president as needed for regularly scheduled duties as well as for special or unexpected needs of the office. 35

I have learned a great deal about the work and ministry of the East Central Synod of Wisconsin as well as the work of our National Church the ELCA and how we serve God s Church in this time. I am interested in serving another three year term because I believe that I still have work to do along with the Synod Council as we continue on focusing what our mission should be about as a synod and how we will move forward to serve God s Church here at home and across the globe. Communication with those I would serve would be important to me so those I represent in the Green Bay Conference would know what is happening in our synod as well as our church wide activities. Serving God and our Lord and Savior in this capacity has been a true honor and blessing. 37

Having served on Synod Council before, I m also familiar with the infrastructure of the Synod. 38

Zion Lutheran, Wauwatosa, WI 9/2009-2/2010 Chairman, Mutual Ministry Team, Nativity Lutheran, Wauwatosa 2002 Sunday School Superintendent, Nativity Lutheran Church, Wauwatosa Board member, Miravida Living (formerly Lutheran Homes, Oshkosh 3/2015-present President, Orion Area Food Pantry Board, Orion IL 4/2012-5/2015 Volunteer, Orion Area Food Pantry 4/2012-5/2015 I have long been committed to being connected with the synod I lived in first as a congregational member in Wauwatosa, WI (Greater Milwaukee Synod) during seminary and then as a newly ordained pastor (Northern Illinois Synod) by attending synod assemblies. I served in my first synod on the world hunger subcommittee. I was a voting member of the 2013 Churchwide Assembly. These experiences reinforced my strong ties to the larger church. I am open to serving as God calls me. 39

The challenging questions of our time I believe can be best addressed when we receive each other with a mindset towards grace, understanding and healing. It is with this as the foundation that I have recently started a community Interfaith worship service. That led me to explore novel ways to reach out, to share God s love and to be a powerful presence for good in the community. I am spear-heading a project to get my congregation s seniors to share their life story, have it transcribed for a book and then teach them (using some of the coaching skills I have been developing with the Synod s support) how to effectively reach out to others and have those others join in the Project by sharing their life story with us and in the book. It is combining experiential learning, life sharing, community outreach and inviting those from the community into our church to share their own stories. This has so taken off that teens have asked me to also do a book project for and by teens a request I am overjoyed to start. During the 31 years I have been an ordained minister, I have been blessed to participate in a wide variety of outreach activities, including the ones mentioned above as well as a Study Tour of Israel, as the Bishop s representative to South Africa, a homeless outreach opportunity in Chicago and more. It has taught me the value of how we can touch the lives of others just as they simultaneously touch our own lives. I am eager to bring more of these life-affirming activities into our communities and through my work s a council member. 40

JIM HARTLEBEN, Wittenberg Employment: Retired Membership: Peace Lutheran Church, Tilleda Conference: Shawano Lay Minister Council President-Present The United Lutheran Parish-Vice President Congregational Treasurer Red Cross Volunteer Past Member and President of local school board Past Town Board Official 12 Year elected member of a National Milk Marketing Cooperative representing over 12,000 dairy farmers nationwide, serving 4 years as Regional first Vice President. I operated a successful farming enterprise for over 40 years which is now operated by my sons. I also owned and operated a trucking and hauling business over 20 years with 60 employees. I am knowledgeable in business management as well as financial expectations. Managing employees has given me an insight to the human needs as well as the social needs of individuals both in the work environment and in their personal lives. 10 SYNOD COUNCIL Position 6 Vote for One One Year Term Youth Member at Large (Age 14-18) MS. SAMANTHA FELKER, Oshkosh Employment: Student Oshkosh West High School Membership: Peace Lutheran Church, Oshkosh Conference: Oshkosh Call Committee: 2016-current, I am representing the youth of my church as we are in process of looking for and hiring a new pastor. Intern Committee: 2016-current, I am apart of the committee to provide support and guidance for our current Vicar Sunday School Teacher: 2015-current. I am helping with the Sunday School program where help is needed. I fill in for sick or busy teachers, I handle getting the kids signed in in the mornings, and I am always available to help create a new project for the children. Child Care During Some Meetings: 2014-current. I provide free child care services when we have an all church meeting, or a less kid friendly church service, or even a group of parents that want to meet without their children. Church Clean Up Days: 2013-current. I have partaken in the each yearly clean up day. We do all sorts of things from cleaning the nursery to pulling weeds outside, or even washing walls and vacuuming the pews. Painting Church Kitchen: This year we gave our hospitality kitchen a new look. We scrubbed and painted the walls, cabinets and drawers. Bethel Homes: Bethel Homes is a local nursing home. I volunteer in the dementia unit where I am blessed to be able to have small talk and provide reassurance to those who are struggling with their illness. Even the simplest thing like singing or playing a game with them makes a world of a difference. I have also had the experience of getting to help them fold their laundry to help calm them down in times of stress this also helps them feel as though they can still do everyday tasks. Father Carr s Place: Father carr s place is a local life enrichment center, they provide many services such as a free clinic, a food bank, and shelter. They even have a chapel on site. I have helped out with many things like stocking shelves, and helping people who need it shop in the store. 44

11 MS. SAMANTHA FELKER, Oshkosh continued - Girl Scouts: 2007-current. Day By Day Warming Shelter: A local Warming shelter that provides dinner and a place to sleep during the winter as well as a sack breakfast. I have served many dinners and done a couple activities like decorating cookies and crafts with the people that come in. I have also helped pack sack breakfasts for them. I am skilled in communication and leadership. I would be able to provide a young generational opinion that is respectful and open minded. I am a good problem solver and am able to think outside the box. I understand the importance of looking at things from a different perspective. I have experience in community relations, small and large group discussions, and asserting care when handling sensitive information. My college goals are to obtain a degree in accounting and earn my CPA. I value the church and its messages and put great care into bringing those aspects into my daily life.
