3 INTRODUCTION As a Pastor, Evangelist and Teacher of the Word since my calling at the age of thirty (30), I have seen the devastation of debt, both personally, among my brethren in the Lord --- AND THE WORLD AT LARGE! No one is exempt. As the Bankruptcy Courts swell, it is high time we re-evaluate our teaching on money, that which we give and that which we keep. Little by little, I have been gathering material for this book for years, without even knowing it! Bit by bit, much like a bird gathering material for a nest, God has provided each piece and I have assembled it that you, the reader, might profit. My heart breaks when I hear testimony after testimony, from people from all walks of life, say the same! They give --- and yet they are broke! A careful study of this book will change all that, to the point that not only will the reader have an abundant supply to live their lives through, but at death will have enough left over to fund the NEXT TWO GENERATIONS of their family! And, amazingly, only a slight change is all that is needed, although it may seem drastic to those who need it! You will take THE SAME MONEY your currently are making, move it around just a little bit as I show you how --- AND SOON BE DEBT FREE! As you digest this material and apply it to your life you will begin to see great changes in your financial situation as you will be applying the EXACT PRINCIPALS taught in every Self-Help, Motivational and Financial Seminar! Why do I say this? Because in reality, even though the leaders of the above seminars will not tell you this, everything they teach HAS ITS ROOTS IN THE TEACHINGS OF THE BIBLE! Zig Ziegler, a great Christian and motivational speaker, will tell you plainly that what he is paid millions to teach the Corporation Giants, could be obtained FOR FREE if they would just read, study and apply the principals of the Bible! While Mr. Ziegler is great at taking the teachings of the Bible and re-wording the teachings into common, everyday language, I do not have the time nor the inclination to do anything other than just quote the Word! I mean, HERE IT IS! You just need the basics and apply them and you can save THE MILLIONS, even though I DO highly recommend his books --- and his teachings! 4

4 The vast majority of this book then is dedicated to get you to thinking correctly concerning money and possessions because, believe it or not, your victory in the financial realm STARTS BETWEEN YOUR EARS and then moves to your bank account! I submit to you then that the question IS NOT Does God want us wealthy or poor? The real question in life is, Can we better serve the Lord and our fellowman if we have possessions or can we better serve them if we are flat broke?! I will tell you plainly that I have been in both positions and HAVING POSSESSIONS IS FAR BETTER! I have been researching the money question since 1976 so what I am going to say DOES NOT come from the pin of a novice! My findings are in this book FOR ONE PURPOSE, so you the reader WILL NOT make the stupid mistakes in your finances that I once made in mine! God wants the very best for us, spiritually, physically, financially and socially. He has come to give us LIFE --- AND LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY, and folks, this DOES include money! Money IS NOT the root of all evil! However, the love of money is! God wants us to have possessions. He DOES NOT want possessions to have us! I simply ask that you study this material with an open mind as it is TRUTH that will set us free --- THAT IS, if we will apply this truth to our lives! 7 THE TRUTH ABOUT PROSPERITY! Pastor, some of my friends are saying that Bible believing churches like ours do a great harm to the body of Christ by teaching that God wants us to prosper financially. They say we are success oriented and JUST THE OPPOSITE of the way Jesus lived and taught. They want to know how we can justify our LIVING LIKE KINGS compared to the lifestyle of Jesus. How can I help them, AND MYSELF, to know the truth? POVERTY OR PLENTY? First, You MUST SETTLE this Question YOURSELF before you can help others. Do you believe the Bible, and if so, are you willing to go by what it says? If you and your friends can say YES! to this, and really mean it, then you CAN be shown the truth, and the truth (that you know and apply) WILL set you free! The question then, is; Does the Bible teach that we can serve God and or families BETTER by being poor, or does it teach that we can serve them BETTER by being prosperous? We want to get OUR ANSWERS FROM THE BIBLE and not from tradition! Tradition has lied to us long enough. GOD S WILL ON THE MATTER! 3 rd John 2 Beloved, I wish ABOVE ALL THINGS (above everything else, this IS My desire) that you (My children) may PROSPER AND BE IN (GOOD) HEALTH, even (in the same manner) as your soul prospers. Now, HOW WELL does a soul THAT IS SAVED prosper?! Honey, you just can t get any better! And THIS IS the desire of God FOR ALL HIS CHILDREN --- that they prosper 8

8 financially and that they be in health --- TO THE SAME DEGREE --- that their soul prospers! He wants THE SAME for us SOCIALLY, PHYSICALLY AND FINANCIALLY that He wants for us SPIRITUALLY! SO, WHERE IS YOUR FORTUNE? Statistics tell us that between our first and last paycheck, each of us will EARN A PERSONAL FORTUNE. Yet, the VAST MAJORITY of Americans, AT RETIREMENT, will have to depend on SOMEONE ELSE in order to survive! You see, just because we earn a fortune DOES NOT necessarily mean we will retire financially independent! This is why Bible believing ministries spend so much time teaching the truth concerning money! You MUST have it to survive and the Church MUST have it to fund the END TIME HARVEST! Have YOU made plans FOR FUNDING YOUR RETIREMENT AS WELL AS THE CONTINUANCE OF THE GOSPEL? THE KEY: SOUND FINANCIAL PLANNING --- GOD S WAY! In today s economy, SOUND FINANCIAL PLANNING is more important than ever. The American Bankers Association gives the following figures as an example of where WE AMERICANS will end up at retirement! Below are their statistics: THE LIFE EXPERIENCE of every 100 PEOPLE, AGE 25 NOW, striving for financial freedom IN 40 YEARS, or at age 65, will be as follows: 36 WILL BE DEAD. (Thirty-six percent NEVER reach age 65!) 5 WILL BE ALIVE AND FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT (Five percent) 9

9 5 WILL BE ALIVE AND STILL WORKING BUT CANNOT RETIRE. (Five percent) 54 WILL BE ALIVE but will lack adequate income and will be dependent on government, friends, relatives and/or charities. (Fifty-four percent) In other words, NINETY-FIVE (95) PERCENT will either be dead or dependent ON SOMEONE ELSE in order to survive! These statistics are very cold BUT THEY ARE VERY REAL ALSO! My friend, YOU AND I are among these statistics! These are people, LIKE YOURSELF, who worked ALL THEIR LIVES, for as long as they could! They had Retirement Plans from work. They bought Stocks and Bonds. They invested in Insurance. They purchased Real Estate. They did ALL THOSE THINGS THAT THE WORLD SAYS TO DO, and yet, at retirement, this WAS NOT ENOUGH! Only 5 out of 100 will make it MAN S WAY! This simply WILL NOT DO and this book is designed to not only show you this fact, but to take you from WHERE YOU ARE to where you WANT TO BE! NOW, TO THE QUESTION! Most people see Jesus and His followers as poor vagabonds, drifting from place to place, having nothing and wanting nothing! The reason they see Jesus this way is quite simple. They have been taught THIS NONSENSE by preachers like me, who simply DID NOT research the truth from the Bible! 10

10 We just taught what we were taught by well meaning pastors AND PROFESSORS who taught what they were taught! Thus the confusion over money in our lives today! MONEY ANSWERS ALL THINGS! Ecclesiastes 10:19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry: BUT MONEY ANSWERS ALL THINGS. How many of us can truthfully say that MORE MONEY would not help us? We all could use more money! There is not one problem in my life right now that could not be helped, or advanced for the cause of Christ, my family and my fellowman, if I just had more money --- and it WILL BE THE SAME in the lives of everyone who reads this book! MONEY IS NEITHER BAD OR GOOD If you have money in your pocket, your money is simply AN EXTENSION of yourself! If you have a good heart, then you have good money. If you have an evil heart, then you have bad money! 1 st Timothy 6:10 For THE LOVE of money (not money itself) IS the root of all evil: Again, money, IN ITSELF, is neither good nor bad. It is good or bad depending ON THE PERSON who has the money! So, DON T BE AFRAID of money; that is UNLESS you are a scalawag already! If your heart IS GOOD, then you can take money from a BAD PERSON --- and the money won t make you bad, but YOU WILL MAKE IT GOOD! The question asked at the start of this chapter however, SUMS UP the feelings of most people today concerning Jesus and money! 11

11 The enemy has done his job well in covering up the truth, even though the truth has been IN OUR BIBLES all the time! SOME MINISTERS VOW POVERTY! If you don t believe the enemy (I am referring to Satan) has been behind the CHURCH and DENOMINATIONAL teachings CONCERNING our pleasing Jesus by being broke and sick, then pray tell, WHO TAUGHT IT TO US?! You cannot find anything like this in the Bible, yet the vast majority of believers feel guilty if we don t get sick occasionally so we can use up what little money God has helped us accumulate! The teaching today is, Jesus didn t have money or a place to lay His head, so if we are going to be like Him, we shouldn t have worldly possessions either! HOG WASH! This is NOT Biblical! As a matter of fact, IT IS JUST THE OPPOSITE of what the Bible teaches! The enemy HAS DONE his work well, with some ministers even taking a vow of poverty! My friend, you DO NOT have to vow poverty as it will just naturally come unless you put THE FINANCIAL LAWS OF GOD to work for you! JESUS DID AWAY WITH THE WORKS OF SATAN! The Bible teaches that Jesus came to do away with the works of the Devil. Jesus did away with the curse. This curse was POVERTY, SICKNESS, DISEASE AND SIN! We may still be living IN THE MANIFESTATIONS of the curse, but we sure don t have too! Jesus nailed it to His cross and DID AWAY with it! Galatians 3:13-14 Christ HATH (past tense) REDEEMED us from THE CRUSE OF THE LAW, being made A CRUSE FOR US (He took our place and BECAME the curse): (14) For it is written, cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree (why 12

12 did Jesus do this?): THAT THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM might come on the Gentiles THROUGH JESUS CHRIST; (and) THAT WE MIGHT RECEIVE THE PROMISE of the Spirit THROUGH FAITH. WHAT WAS THE BLESSING AND THE PROMISE? Romans 4:13 For the promise, THAT HE SHOULD BE HEIR OF THE WORLD (this IS the promise!), was not to Abraham, or his seed, THROUGH THE LAW, but THROUGH THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF FAITH. Did you catch that?! God PROMISED Abraham AND HIS SEED, that through THEIR FAITH, they WERE heirs of this World! People say, So what? What difference does that make TO ME? This promise WAS TO ABRAHAM and his descendants THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO! Whoopee FOR THEM! I have GOOD NEWS for you! The them above just happens to be the YOU AND ME of today! It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the physical, OR NATURAL DESCENDANTS of Abraham, but rather those WHO WOULD PLACE THEIR FAITH in the coming Messiah as Abraham did! WE NEED TO MAKE UP OUR MINDS Either we believe the Bible, or we don t believe it! It s JUST THAT SIMPLE! I AM NOT talking about interpretation, but simply believing WHAT WE READ! Do you believe what you read, or, do you believe what someone said they thought the Bible said?! Let me ask you a few questions: 13

13 Tell me, WHO SAYS that The Bible cannot be trusted? WHO SAYS that Miracles ended with the completion of the Bible? WHO SAYS that Those things (that they did in the Bible) are not for today? WHO SAYS that God does not want us to prosper? Tell me, JUST WHO ARE THEY? Whoever they are, they sure DID NOT get this FROM THE BIBLE! Have them give you VERSE AND CHAPTER! They can t do it because IT S NOT in the Bible! This is all man s thinking, BASED ON TRADITION! If God ended His healings, His miracles, His gifts, etceteras and so forth, SURELY He would have made it clear so there could be no doubt. I mean, if He no longer CARES for us, THEN HE IS LIAR because He has said in His Word that He is no respector of persons! If HIS CARE was only for days gone by, why did He include IT ALL in His Word? WHY WOULD HE BOTHER TO PUT MIRACLES, GIFTS AND HEALINGS IN THE BIBLE IF THEY WERE NOT FOR TODAY? If salvation is all that IS LEFT, then why did God INCLUDE 2 nd Timothy 3:15-17 that tells us to USE ALL THE BIBLE for our doctrine, for our reproof, for our correction, for our instruction in Righteousness? Why go to all this trouble? Why not just have Paul publish a little gospel tract and be done with it? YOU KNOW WHY! The WORD IS REAL! ALL 66 BOOKS are for today! 14

14 You WILL BE JUDGED by the Word, not your church, or your pastor, or your denomination! So, GO BY THE WORD! If your church, or pastor, or denomination AGREES with the Word, GREAT! But if they don t, PRAY FOR THEM but go by the Word as IT will be your judge! REDEEMED FROM THE CURSE! While this book IS NOT to disprove tradition concerning Jesus and poverty, we MUST, however, deal with the subject briefly. After all, this book IS on pro$perity --- YOUR PROSPERITY! Now, WAS Jesus poor as tradition teaches? In Galatians 3:13-14 above, we pointed out that Jesus redeemed us from the curse. He did this BY BECOMING what He came to do away with! In other words, to do away with the curse, He BECAME the cruse! So, to do away with poverty, He BECAME POVERTY. To do away with sin, He BECAME SIN. To do away with sickness and disease, He BECAME SICKNESS AND DISEASE! Now, with this in mind, let s take WHAT WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH, sin, and look at it IN ORDER to understand things that we MIGHT BE less familiar with! QUESTION: Did Jesus HAVE TO COMMIT SIN in order TO BECOME sin? NO! If He did, then He would be just like every other person---in NEED OF A SAVIOR! The Bible IS VERY CLEAR on this point. Listen: Hebrews 5:15 For we have not an High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but WAS IN ALL POINTS tempted like as we are, YET WITHOUT SIN. 15

15 Jesus DID NOT have to sin TO BECOME sin! Jesus DID NOT have to get sick with some disease TO BECOME sickness and disease! Jesus DID NOT have to live in poverty TO BECOME poverty! He DID ALL THIS when HE TOOK OUR PLACE and became OUR SUBSTITUTE! Romans 5:8 But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, WHILE WE WERE YET SINNERS (At our worst), Christ DIED FOR US (Gave us His best). While we were at our worst, in sin, sickness and poverty (the curse), God DID HIS BEST for us in that Jesus TOOK OUR PLACE! He took our sin, our sickness and disease, our poverty, AND AS THE CURSE, was nailed to the tree! He took our curse and gave us His righteousness! THE LIFE OF JESUS Jesus came to do the will of the Father and went about setting people free. In order to do this, He ENTERED INTO and LITERALLY BECAME what He wanted to destroy. He became sin so that we could have His righteousness! He was beaten so that with His stripes we could be healed! He emptied Himself of His Heavenly riches and operated in the poverty of the Earth (as compared to Heaven) so we could have the riches needed to fund the Gospel and provide, not only for our own needs, but the needs of our children s children! The curse of the law was poverty, sickness/disease, and death. This curse WAS NAILED to the cross AND DESTROYED! 16

16 Folks, it IS done! It IS destroyed! Praise God, we ARE free! Because of this, we, you and me, ARE HEIRS of this World, right now! Yet most believers and the world at large ARE STILL living in bondage to Satan! They COULD BE delivered! They COULD BE healed! They COULD BE prosperous! But we can move only in truth that we know and the church and the world as a whole DO NOT know this! How sad. Before we continue our discussion, I want to point out that the Laws of God work for the non-believer as well as the believer. He HONORS His Word! When anyone applies the principals you find in this book, either intentional on by accident --- THEY STILL WORK! This is why many who DO NOT follow Christ still prosper and some become extremely successful. We must remember that each promise of God STANDS ON ITS OWN! In other words, we DO NOT have to keep every promise of God in order for one of His promises to work! If we did, then NOTHING would ever work as none of us wholly follow God! Only Jesus did this --- AND WE CRUCIFIED HIM! Jesus said the children of darkness, meaning the unsaved, were smarter than the children of light, meaning the saved! (Luke 16:8) Why would He make such a statement? Simply because they had since enough to put good business practices in operation in their lives while His followers didn t! 17

17 Now, let s continue to get you informed and thinking correctly about money and its use. Let s look at: THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM! Genesis 17:1-7 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine (99), the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I AM ALMIGHTY GOD; walk before Me, and be thou perfect (upright). (2) And I will make MY COVENANT between Me and thee, and will multiply thee EXCEEDINGLY. (3) And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, (4) As for Me, behold, My Covenant IS WITH THEE, and thou shalt BE A FATHER of many nations. (5) Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be ABRAHAM; for a father OF many nations HAVE I MADE THEE. (6) And I will make the EXCEEDINGLY FRUITFUL, and I will make nations of thee, and Kings shall come out of thee. (Here is where you and I come in!) (7) And I will ESTABLISH MY COVENANT, between Me AND THY SEED (us Kings!) after thee IN THEIR GENERATIONS (in our lifetime) FOR AN EVERLASTING COVENANT, to be a God unto thee, and TO THY SEED (us Kings!) AFTER THEE. WHO CAN CLAIM TO BE ABRAHAM S SEED? Galatians 3:29 And If ye be Christ s (that is, if you are saved), THEN ARE YE ABRAHAM S SEED, AND HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE. If you are living in sin, in sickness, disease, or in poverty, you are living BENEATH YOUR DIGNITY as a child of God! You need to get off your blessed assurance, give the Devil a swift kick out of your life, AND ENJOY YOUR INHERITANCE! You HAVE inherited the World! HOW DO I RECEIVE MY INHERITANCE? Abraham received his BY BELIEVING AND ACTING on what God had said. He did this BY FAITH, and this IS THE WAY you and I will have to receive what 18

18 is RIGHTFULLY ours also! Whatever you do, GET THIS TRUTH down inside you, in your Spirit. God told Abraham, I HAVE MADE! And Abraham believed God. Now, here is a man 99 years old, with NO children, and a 90 year old wife, WHO IS BARREN! In the flesh, there IS NO WAY! But God said, I HAVE MADE (past tense) you a father of many nations (Romans 4:17)! God told Abraham that He HAD ALREADY MADE him a father. Abraham REFUSED to believe WHAT HE COULD SEE, and chose to believe WHAT GOD HAD SPOKEN! This IS THE KEY to our Victory! We need to get our Bibles and LIVE IN ROMANS, chapter 4! Look at these verses: 18. Who against hope BELIEVED in hope That he MIGHT BECOME the father of many nations- 18. According to that WHICH WAS SPOKEN Abraham CONSIDERED NOT his own body- 19. Abraham CONSIDERED NOT the deadness of Sara s womb- 20. He STAGGERED NOT at the promise of God. 21. And being FULLY PERSUADED that, what God HAD PROMISED, He was ALSO able to perform! This was Abraham! He called those things that WERE NOT, as though THEY 19

19 WERE (verse 17)! Now, hold on to your seats! Here comes the best part! Look at verses 23 and 24: Romans 4:23-24 Now IT WAS NOT written for Abraham s sake alone, BUT FOR US ALSO. My friend, this IS your answer to financial prosperity! There it is in black and white! Through faith IN THE WRITTEN promise of God, we, YOU AND I, have access to the BLESSINGS OF ABRAHAM! Abraham believed the Word and ACTED, or put it into work in his life! Again, the Word of God works for any and all who will act upon it. If you WILL BELIEVE the Word of God AND ACT ON IT, standing firm, refusing to yield to the circumstances, and be moved ONLY BY THE WORD, your life WILL BE revolutionized! SCRIPTURES WE NEED TO CONFESS, ALOUD, EVERY DAY, ALL DAY LONG! Psalms 35:27 Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favor My righteous cause; yea, let them say continually, let the Lord be magnified, WHICH HATH PLEASURE in the prosperity of His servant. NOTE: If God HAS PLEASURE when His children PROSPER, what are HIS FEELINGS when we LIVE IN POVERTY, or next door to it? He can only be DISPLEASED! It gives Him NO pleasure. Luke 6:38 Give, and IT SHALL be given UNTO YOU; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, AND RUNNING OVER, shall men give into your bosom. For with THE SAME MEASURE that you use to measure, it shall be measured to you again. 3 rd John 2 Beloved, I wish (this is God's will for you) ABOVE ALL 20

20 THINGS (God wants you to have this MORE than anything else) THAT YOU MAY PROSPER AND BE IN HEALTH, even (or in the same manner) as your soul prospereth. In other words, God wants for us FINANCIALLY AND PHYSICALLY, exactly what He wants for us SPIRITUALLY! He wants us saved FROM SIN. He wants us saved FROM SICKNESS AND DISEASE. He wants us saved FROM POVERTY. He wants us SAVED, PERIOD! Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply ALL (how much?) your need according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus. Psalms 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Proverbs 13:22 A good man LEAVETH AN INHERITANCE to his CHILDREN S CHILDREN (enough for the next two generations): and THE WEALTH of the sinner (wicked) IS LAID UP (in store) for the just. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, AND ALL THESE THINGS (food, clothing, shelter, etc.) SHALL BE ADDED unto you. These seven (7) verses will completely turn your life around when they become heart knowledge instead of head knowledge! First of all, they ARE God s will for you! This IS what He wants for you! Confess them over and over again during the day, until you KNOW THEM like you know HOW TO BREATHE! You don t even have TO THINK in order to breathe, you just DO IT! This IS the way these Scriptures must become to you! I suggest you write them down on 3 by 5 cards and carry them in your pocket 21

21 and read them several times each day --- OUT LOUD! You need to hear yourself confess what God s word has to say about your financial situation! After you have done this a few days, sit down and try to write them out FROM MEMORY! Once they are in your memory you can then get them down in your spirit and they will just naturally become a part of your life --- LIKE BREATHING! LET S RECAP! God says that the saved ARE the seed of Abraham. As Abraham s seed, we are JOINT HEIRS with Christ. We ARE Kings and Priests IN THIS PRESENT WORLD, and it IS our inheritance! Every promise God made to Abraham, IS OURS, through OUR UNION with Christ. As a need develops, we CAN OVERCOME IT by the seed that we have sown. With the seed we plant, He not only will supply our needs AND wants, but ASSURES US that we will have enough LEFT OVER to share with others while we are on Planet Earth! And not only that, but at our death, we can LEAVE AN INHERITANCE that will provide FOR THE NEXT TWO (2) GENERATIONS of our family! WOW! This definitely IS NOT POVERTY and IS THE EXACT will of God for EVERY PERSON BORN OF ADAM S LOINS! Beloved, there IS NO end! We could go on and on forever, but there is NO NEED. How many times must God say something before it becomes truth? ONLY ONCE! The question before us then is the SAME ONE that was asked at the beginning of this chapter: Do you believe the Bible and are you willing to go by what it says?! 22

22 Then, WHAT WILL YOU DO with this truth? I trust you will believe it and act on it, STARTING NOW, by: (1.) Plant a seed for the amount you need. (Mark 4:20; Mark 10:30). Do not be afraid to ask God for a hundredfold return on your gift, now, in this lifetime! (2.) Believe that it IS ALREADY YOURS (Matthew 18:19; Mark 10:29-30). (3.) Make a memorial to God. From time to time SCOTCH UP your seed WITH ANOTHER GOOD OFFERING! This keeps your seed EVER BEFORE the Father, but the main thing it does is that IT KEEPS your need EVER BEFORE your face so you WON T GO BACK on your confession! (4.) Grab hold and don t let go (1 st Timothy 6:19; Mark 11:23). (5.) Use your authority OVER SATAN and his bunch by BINDING AND LOOSING (Matthew 18:18; Matthew 12:29; Hebrews 1:14). (6.) Speak to the problem or situation just exactly how you want it to become. Do not accept it any other way (Ezekiel 37:4-10). (7.) Praise God for it until you receive it; because IT IS YOURS (Mark 11:24)! Prosperity IS NOT just cash but cash IS INCLUDED in prosperity! God s Will for His people is TOTAL PROSPERITY in all areas of life. Our problems in the past HAVE BEEN REASON and NOT KNOWING the Word of God. If we don t know His Word, WE CANNOT KNOW HIS WAYS! Let s let God put all we have learned IN PERSPECTIVE: John 10:10 The thief (false shepherds) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy--- 23

23 So, everything BAD that happens to us IS CAUSED by our listening to false shepherds. This OPENS THE DOOR to our lives for Satan and his demons. All sin, sickness, disease, accidents, storms, poverty, lack, etc., IS OF THE DEVIL! He IS our enemy! Jesus said: ---I am come that they (you and me) MIGHT HAVE LIFE, and that they might have it MORE ABUNDANTLY. This IS God s WILL for you. And me. And everyone else! Now YOU KNOW this truth! Let it set you free (John 8:32)! However, just knowing the truth WILL NOT help you unless you COMPLETELY DEVOUR this teaching of Jesus and make it a VITAL PART of your life! Remember, if you KEEP DOING things the way you currently are doing them, you WILL CONTINUE to get the same results! To get A DIFFERENT RESULT, you will have TO CHANGE the way you are doing things! This first starts in our thinking. Unless you can see that it is God s will for you to be prosperous; unless you can see yourself prosperous --- IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! 24

24 THE TRAGEDY OF THE TITHE! Pastor, I have been a tither almost from the moment I received Christ, yet I never seem to get ahead. As a matter of fact, I am going in the other direction! Do you have any suggestions as to how I can get out of debt and stay out? THIS QUESTION ZERO S IN ON WHERE WE ARE, DOESN T IT?! I heard Dr. John Avanzini in a meeting I was in a few years ago say that If we screamed at the level of our debt pain, the noise would be so loud that it would shatter our ear drums and collapse the building we were in! How true and how to the point the above question is. Satan has been busy teaching us the WRONG THINGS about giving, just as he has been teaching us the WRONG THINGS about everything else! And the sad part of it all is, he has used churches AND teachers like myself to do all this! FIRST, SOME OBSERVATIONS Have you ever seen ANYONE get rich from tithing? No, most are like yourself, and yet we read in Malachi that if we will JUST TITHE OUR INCOME we will not have room enough to receive the blessings God WILL POUR OUT upon us! On one hand, we have THE WORD, and on the other hand, we have our LIFE EXPERIENCES, and they DO NOT agree! We tithe and yet, we are broke! Then here comes Satan: You idiot! You KNOW all they want down at the church IS YOUR MONEY! God DOESN T love you or He WOULD prosper you! You had better SAVE YOUR MONEY for a rainy day! Or, he might come to you and bring condemnation: You KNOW what a FILTHY SINNER you are! You can t get God to bless you because you ARE SO UNWORTHY! You had better SAVE YOUR MONEY for a rainy day! 25

25 Now, if I've hit close to home in your life, just say, Preacher, you HAVE found me! Satan HAS been busy, hasn t he?! He is ALWAYS wanting it to rain on our parade! But here IS the beautiful part in all this: Satan IS A LIAR and the father of lies! God DOES love you and God DOES bless you and your giving IS NOT wrong and your money IS NOT all they want down at the church! The problem IS NOT with you. The problem IS NOT with God. The problem IS Satan and his causing us to MIS-UNDERSTAND the Word of God! He has caused us to READ THE WORD INCORRECTLY and when we do this--- AND APPLY THE WORD that we have misread to our lives---utter chaos IS the result! SO, LET S RE-LOOK AT THE BOOK! The Standard Text for tithing in most churches is Malachi 3:10. Let s look at it. Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat IN MINE HOUSE, and prove Me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. I have capitalized in mine house to let us know WHY we are to tithe. It IS NOT to put meat on our tables, but rather to operate the House of God! We are to tithe so that the house of God and the mission of the church may be properly funded! Leviticus 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, IS THE LORD S: it IS HOLY unto the Lord. In Malachi 3:10 above, I have also underlined some words to let you know that 26

26 these words HAVE BEEN ADDED by the translators. They WERE NOT in the original manuscripts, so let s read the last part of this verse WITHOUT these words and see what God is really saying: ---and pour you out a blessing, THAT NOT ENOUGH. In translating from one language to another, words often HAVE TO BE ADDED to make the meaning complete in the new language, but you MUST NEVER change the meaning by adding words! Italicized words ARE added to make the meaning MORE understandable, but NEVER to change the meaning, as it does here in Malachi 3:10! Thank God for the King James Version of the Bible! Every word THAT HAS BEEN ADDED by the translators are italicized TO LET THE READER KNOW they were not in the original manuscripts. The newer translations DO NOT do this and I think this is a very bad mistake. Malachi 3:10 DOES NOT say that tithing will meet all your needs. It says that tithing will open the windows of heaven FOR YOU, but that is not enough! According to Malachi 3:8, we have robbed God of HIS TITHES and our offerings. Just tithing our income IS NOT ENOUGH to correct this, as tithing is to fund the church---not US! We have robbed God of His tithe and we have robbed ourselves by not giving offerings as God instructs, completely tying the hand of God! Watch this: Malachi 3:8 Will a man ROB God? Yet ye HAVE robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes AND offerings. Did you note, AND OFFERINGS? We must correct BOTH sins if we are to be blessed ENOUGH! 27

27 It is not enough just to correct part of our giving. We must correct it all. THE TITHE, WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT! In the Old Testament, we see the tithe introduced. It was instituted in the garden of Eden, as we see the practice by both Cain and Abel, even though Cain s offering was not accepted because he failed to convert it to a blood offering. How would Cain and Abel know to do this if God had not instructed Adam and Adam had not passed it on to his children?! Preacher, that s stretching the Scriptures just a bit, don t you think?! No, I really do not believe it is, however, we DO SEE IT in Abraham s day, spelled out for us, some 430 years BEFORE God incorporated it into the Mosaic Law! Genesis 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave Him tithes of all. Again I simply ask, How would they know to tithe had God not have instructed them?! WHAT THE WORD MEANS The word tithe means tenth. We CANNOT tithe 6% of our income or 15% of our income. We CAN give 6% or 15% of our income but neither would be a tithe as the word means a tenth, or 10%, no more and no less. In other words, if you made $10.00, the FIRST DOLLAR belongs to God. If you grow 10 potatoes, the FIRST potato WITHOUT BLEMISH belongs to God. If you have 10 sheep, the FIRST sheep WITHOUT BLEMISH belongs to God! Now, you COULD give more, and SHOULD give more, but the amount you give 28

28 ABOVE 10 PERCENT WOULD NOT be a tithe, but rather AN OFFERING! We see the tithe AND offerings UNDER GRACE from the Garden, or at least from Abraham. We see the tithe AND offerings INCORPORATED INTO THE LAW in the days of Moses. We see Christ and the Apostles give the tithe AND offerings in THE EARLY DAYS the Church. We see the tithe AND offerings given THROUGH OUT THE NEW TESTAMENT. Why would we think it would be different in our day and time? SPIRITUAL GIVING VERSES TITHING In the New Testament, we ARE commanded to FOLLOW THE LEAD of the Holy Spirit. We are to give as the Holy Spirit DIRECTS us. No, I DID NOT say that we can give AS WE PLEASE. I said we MUST GIVE when and where and what the Holy Spirit tells us to give! We ARE NOT to be Legalistic Givers and just throw our tithe and offerings into an offering plate or drop it in the mail to God knows who! We are to worship God with it! We DO NOT worship God ONE DAY out of seven as they were commanded under the Law. We ARE COMMANDED to worship Him 24 hours, each and every day! Nor do we give Him 10% of our income, plus an offering when we feel like it! WE GIVE HIM OUR ALL! WE ARE HIS, lock, stock and barrel! EVERYTHING we have IS HIS! We ARE NOT our own but we HAVE BEEN BOUGHT with a price! If the Holy Spirit directs us to give it all, then we give it all! 29

29 1 st Corinthians 6:19-20 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye ARE NOT your own? (20) For ye ARE BOUGHT with a price: Therefore glorify God IN YOUR BODY, and IN YOUR SPIRIT, which are God s. Luke 12:47-48 And that servant, which KNEW his Lord s will, and PREPARED NOT HIMSELF, neither did according to His will, shall be beaten with many stripes. (48) But he that KNEW NOT, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever MUCH IS GIVEN, of him SHALL MUCH BE REQUIRED: and to whom men have committed much, of him they WILL ASK THE MORE. Today, we have been given A BETTER COVENANT. We have the Holy Spirit IN US to lead and direct us. They did not. He was not in them, but rather with them! Things had to be spelled out for those under the Old Covenant. They had laws and feast days. They had rules and regulations to follow. WE DON T! WE HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT! This is WHY God requires MORE of us today than He did of those under the Old Covenant! So, if you have been tithing, or tithing and giving an occasional offering, it is NOT ENOUGH! God requires your all! Legalistic giving helps ONLY the church or organization or person to whom you are giving your money! Sure, you are blessed because YOU HELPED THEM, but for the most part, your bills go UNPAID and you get deeper into the credit system! Only Spiritual Giving will get you out of debt, and keep you out! Preacher, what do you mean by Spiritual Giving? 30

30 Spiritual Giving goes ABOVE AND BEYOND the tithes and offerings of the Old Covenant. They gave legalistically. They gave A SET AMOUNT, 10 percent, plus their offerings that were required from time to time (They also had some special tithes that they gave as required by law). It was WRITTEN DOWN for them as they DID NOT have the Holy Spirit to direct them in their giving. We have NO SUCH RULES! We have the Holy Spirit in us to direct our every move. Spiritual Giving then, is OUR OBEYING the Holy Spirit in our giving! It is letting God direct the flow of money and possessions that come through us! As we yield to His leading by DOING AS HE DIRECTS, He allows us to live OUT OF THE FLOW! As we trust Him more, the flow INCREASES! He BECOMES our source as we depend ON HIM instead of our jobs or our local lending institutions! When we give, IT IS TO HIM! We worship Him by asking Him what HE WANTS! This way, He IS IN 100 PERCENT of our giving. The TRAGEDY OF THE TITHE is that it gets God in on ONLY 10 PERCENT of our giving---and THAT IS NOT ENOUGH as the Bible plainly states! THE SIN OF ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA Acts 5:1-4 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, (2) And KEPT BACK PART OF THE PRICE, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the Apostles feet. (3) But Peter said, Ananias, WHY HATH SATAN FILLED THINE HEART to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? (4) While it remained, WAS IT NOT THINE OWN? And after it was sold, 31

31 WAS IT NOT IN THINE OWN POWER? Why HAST THOU CONCEIVED this thing in thine heart? Thou has not lied unto men, BUT UNTO GOD. Here we have the sad story of a husband and wife who wanted to get in on the Spiritual Giving of the Early Church, but did not want to PAY THE PRICE! They wanted the glory of giving, or the applause of their fellow man, without the actual cost! So, Satan filled their ears with a way to have it all without paying the price! Now, first of all, did they have to listen to Satan? No! They were to listen to the Holy Spirit, as the others had been doing! It was Satan who GAVE THEM THE SUGGESTION, but it was Ananias and Sapphira WHO MADE THE DECISION to carry out the deception! Satan CANNOT make us do anything! But here is the REAL REASON I wanted to use this husband and wife team! They WERE ALREADY Tithers AND Givers under the Old Covenant, so giving WAS NOT something new to them, nor was giving LARGE AMOUNTS. They had been doing this all their lives! The problem was GIVING IT ALL or selling out completely to Jesus! The Land was their own to do with as they pleased as was the money they received for it! There was NO SIN here. The amount they gave would have been WELL OVER any tithe they would have owed under the Old Covenant! They gave SO MUCH that ONLY the Holy Spirit knew they were lying! Their SIN was not in the AMOUNT THEY GAVE or the amount they kept back, but in SAYING they gave it all, when in reality, they did not. They LIED to men, or so they thought, but the Scriptures say, As often as 32

32 you do it unto man, you have done it unto Me! God takes things personal! Their SIN was IN DISOBEYING the Holy Spirit. The Early Church had gotten in on Spiritual Giving instead of the Legalistic tithing they had been doing and miracle after miracle had been occurring! To do what God wanted was going to require that He BE INVOLVED IN MORE than just 10 percent of their lives! It had to be THEIR ALL! And, WOW, was it ever! The very first service 3000 souls were saved, and by Acts, chapter 4, another 5000 had been added! Why? They were ALL in one accord, or single minded! Their Flesh Mind was IN AGREEMENT with their Spirit Mind! They were SOLD OUT to Jesus---not to some standard of the world or some Old Testament standard! SATAN AT HIS MOST SUBTLE SELF! The most subtle work of the devil is DURING THE OFFERING! He HAS US WORKING off a system that ONLY ALLOWS God in on 10 percent of our finances! God Himself said, This IS NOT enough! Remember, it WAS NOT the giving of Ananias and Sapphira or WHAT THEY KEPT FOR THEMSELVES that DID THEM IN! It was the entering into an agreement with each other to lie to the Holy Spirit that was their undoing! So, the TRAGEDY of the tithe is that IT ROBS people of OBEYING the Holy Spirit. He can tell us any amount and we just shrug it off and throw in our 10 percent! It IS NOT worship, but rather a debt we owe! There! That takes care of THAT for another week! Then we wonder HOW COME God doesn t meet ALL our needs? I mean, after all, we give Him His 10 percent cut! 33

33 GOD S MEASURING STICK! Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For WITH THE SAME MEASURE that ye mete withal it SHALL BE MEASURED TO YOU AGAIN. God uses THE SAME MEASURE to give back to us THAT WE USE to give to Him! If we want ALL OF HIM then we have to give ALL OF US! This certainly includes money! When we start looking for loopholes --- WE FIND THEM BIG TIME! I have had people ask, Pastor, do I tithe off of my gross salary, what I make, or do I tithe off of my net, or what I bring home? Do you see the RED FLAG coming up in this question, or the loophole they are looking for?! I would say something like, Well, do you want a gross blessing or a net blessing? I should have said, With that attitude, IT REALLY DOESN T MATTER because you re headed directly to the bankruptcy court anyhow! We don t bargain with God! EVEN IF WE TITHE AND GIVE OUR OFFERINGS, BUT FORGET TO RECEIVE, WE MISS GOD S BLESSINGS! When you go to a supermarket and find what you want, in order to get that item, there is a price involved. When you pay the amount required, you can take the item home. It is yours! Let s take the above example and apply it to our giving AND RECEIVING. First of all, we need to tell God exactly what we want from our giving. Someone has said, We plant a seed to meet a need! 34

34 So, we have a need and we go to God s Super Market looking for that need to be met. God tells us the amount we are to give and we give that amount --- and TURN AROUND and walk away! The item we needed HAS BEEN PAID FOR but we failed to pick it up and take it with us! Now, you may say, That s stupid! And I will agree with you, but this IS EXACTLY how ninety-nine and nine-tenths percent OF OUR PRAYING AND GIVING IS DONE! We walk off and LEAVE THE ANSWER lying there BY REFUSING TO RECEIVE IT with our confession! WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO GIVE SOLELY OUT OF DUTY; TO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING IN RETURN! This is completely foreign to Scripture! The money we give to God IS His tithe, and the amount ABOVE the tithe that He tells us to give, is our offering. There is nothing wrong with this --- EXCEPT OUR FAILURE TO WORSHIP! We tithe the tithe or offer the offering WITH WORDS, faith filled words, right from the very Word of God! We tell Him with HIS OWN WORDS exactly what we want in return for our giving, AS WE WORSHIP HIM! This may SOUND unscriptural, but, then again, we have not been getting our needs met DOING IT THE OTHER WAY! Let me show you FROM THE WORD: Deuteronomy 26:12a When thou hast made an end OF TITHING all the tithes of thine increase-- Deuteronomy 26:13a ---Then thou SHALT SAY before the Lord thy God, I have--- 35

35 How do we tithe the tithe or the gift we are giving? We SAY, or tell God WHY we are giving it and WHAT we want Him to do in return! Hallelujah! First of all, God KNOWS OUR NEEDS (and wants) even before we ask Him! He has promised to PROVIDE for our needs AND wants. Philippians 4:19 (KJV) But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Psalm 23:1 (KJV) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. Although He DOES NOT OWE US ANYTHING, He IS OBLIGATED to me, and to you, to do this, because He HAS done it for others, and He IS NO RESPECTOR of persons! So, He IS CONSTANTLY looking for ways to meet our needs and our wants. 2 nd Chronicles 16:9 (KJV) For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. When He tells us an amount to give, He is using that TO MEET A NEED OR WANT we HAVE NOT even approached Him about! We NEVER take God by surprise! Give THAT AMOUNT to the church, ministry or person He directs you to---and MAKE YOUR REQUEST -- -AND RECEIVE IT by thanking God for it and confessing that it is yours! You can, AND SHOULD, make memorial offerings to God occasionally, thanking God for that need or want --- UNTIL IT MANIFESTS ITSELF! GOD AND THE CON ARTIST! I heard a story years ago about this fellow that thought he had God all figured out! He was talking to God and said, God, how long is a million years? God said, To you it is a long, long time, but to Me, it s just a minute. The man then said, God, how much is a million dollars? God said, To you, it is an extremely large amount of money, but to Me, it s just a penny. The man, thinking he had God, said, God, will you give me one of your pennies, to 36

36 which God replied, In just a minute! START A TITHING ACCOUNT! Some of the most successful ministers I know have what they call a Tithing account. It is a SAVINGS ACCOUNT that PAYS INTEREST and they simply put their tithes and offerings in that account! Then when God tells them to give a certain amount --- THEY GIVE IT! If it s to a ministry that is tax deductible, FINE! If not, then that IS FINE ALSO, because it IS NOT their money in the first place! If God tells them to give all that they have in that account --- THEY DO IT, because they belong to God --- AND SO DOES THEIR POCKETBOOK! If God tells them an amount GREATER than all they have, they give ALL THEY HAVE in cash, and the rest in faith! They simply believe God, or trust God, to supply the balance! A PERSONAL TESTIMONY! I shall NEVER FORGET the first time I ran into this type of giving. I called on a certain ministry to sell them some of my books to use as gifts to give away to their television audience. To make a long story short, this was on a Wednesday and I needed $4, by that Friday, and was flat broke, WITH NOTHING COMING IN! After a short visit with this Godly Pastor, we had prayer and I gave him some books and he gave me some of his tapes and an envelope that he said God had told him to give me. Later, when I opened the envelope, it was a check made out to my ministry for $5,000.00! While this was a financial miracle TO ME, it was an opportunity for him TO 37

37 PLANT SEED for needs yet to come in his ministry! How I praise God that he WAS OBEDIENT to the Holy Spirit as it met my immediate needs and put him IN A POSITION to get his needs met in the future! However, THE BEST PART of this entire miracle was THE TAPES! The money WAS ALREADY OWED but the teaching on the tapes will stay with me forever! When we do our giving GOD S WAY, we DO NOT have to worry about OUR POCKETBOOKS! God will FILL THEM UP so that we will owe no man anything, BUT TO LOVE HIM! I will tell you plainly that tithing your income and giving offerings as God directs will bring you more money than you could ever expect to have and you can live the abundant life from the flow that God brings through your life! 38

38 PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE! So far in our studies, we have dealt with your thinking. Once we know the truth about something, we are then able to walk in that truth, or apply that truth to our lives and see it immediately spring into action. We have also found out that even though someone might not be a believer, when they apply the principals of the Bible in their lives, these principals still work! They work because they are truths! God s Word works no matter who puts it to work in their lives. This also explains why certain things that we have been taught to do, DO NOT work. They ARE NOT absolutes. You do not ALWAYS make money in the stock market. As a matter of fact, great fortunes have been lost speculating. It is the same with Insurance, real estate, retirement plans, etceteras and so forth. Insurance companies go broke as do businesses and retirement funds are completely wiped out. You have also seen that even things we have been taught about giving to the work of God can be misrepresented and when we apply these partial truths to our lives the end result is frustration and our needs go unmet. Only five (5) out of every one hundred (100) are fortunate enough to prosper doing things mans way. In this chapter, we want to take what we have learned AS TRUTH and help you apply these truths to your life financially. We must first start with getting you out of debt! Once this happens, everything else will fall in place and you will be on your way to the good life we all so desperately seek. I know this is true because I get hundreds of s and letters EVERY WEEK from people from all walks of life trying to sell some gimmick, some get-rich- 39

39 quick plan, some scheme, some pie-in-the-sky notion to solve all financial problems and make me filthy rich beyond my wildest dreams! This is why I told you up-front that if you wanted to be a GA-ZILLION-AIRE, my book would not work for you! It IS NOT some get rich, pie-in-the-sky ploy. It is solid financial principals that work, day in and day out. What this book WILL DO is set you free financially so you CAN live the good life and from there it is up to you as to how far you can go --- OR WANT TO GO --- FINANCIALLY SPEAKING! Let s get you started so you can take this information, bury yourself in it until it becomes a part of you, JUST LIKE BREATHING, and you will be on your way! I never have to stop and think, do I need to breathe, or did I just do it?! It is something we all do---automatically! STEP NUMBER ONE: Get out your checkbook and let s see what you actually spend towards paying bills. You will need to go back one (1) full year! Go item by item and write them all down. Now, take that same checkbook, go down every entry, write it down and PLACE IT IN ITS PROPER CATEGORY. By this I mean, food, clothing, entertainment, mortgage, auto loans, etceteras. You will now need to DO THE SAME with each credit card. Every charge must be recorded. Even by now, A PATTERN SHOULD BE DEVELOPING showing you EXACTLY where your money is going! Once you have all your bills recorded and categorized, it is time to move to step number two. 40

40 STEP NUMBER TWO: From you payment books, monthly statements, home amortization schedule, etceteras, total up the ENTIRE AMOUNT of your debt. Once this is complete, by taking both steps one and two above, you now know: (1), how much you owe, and, (2), what you currently are spending each month. THIS, my friend, IS WHERE YOU ARE---FINANCIALLY! Now comes the day of reckoning! How are you going to live as you are accustomed to and ever hope to someday be debt free, if you NOW add in 10 percent to the church --- and give an offering ON TOP OF THAT? You are going IN THE HOLE on a monthly basis as it is! The simple truth is, YOU WILL NOT be able to keep your Current Lifestyle and be pleasing to Jesus at the same time! Remember, it was your current lifestyle that got you in this mess in the first place! However, from past experience, DOING THINGS GOD S WAY is always the best --- AND OFFERS A FAR GREATER REWARD than the world s way of doing things! STEP NUMBER THREE: Now it is time to look at your TOTAL INCOME, CONSIDER WHAT YOU OWE, DETERMINE WHAT YOU CAN PAY PER MONTH and move you on your way toward being debt free! I say what you can pay, instead of what you have contracted to pay. To get out of debt you probably will have to work with your creditors on a repayment schedule, but we will cover this later. For simple mathematics sake, let s say you have a total income of $50,000 per year. Since the tithe is the Lords and we are to put Him first, 10 percent of $50,000 would be $5,000, leaving you with $45,000, but IN STEPS UNCLE SAM! 41

41 If your salary comes from an employer, take 19 percent for uncle and if you are self-employed, back out 30 percent! This IS NOT as bad as it seems, because if you are employed, you NEVER SEE the money anyhow as it is payroll deducted! If you are self-employed, you have been paying it on a quarterly basis anyway! Again, let s opt for the easy way and say that you are employed! 19 percent of $50,000 is $9,500, leaving you a SPENDABLE INCOME of $35,500. Now, let s look at your debt, and since we already have figures for Mr. and Mrs. America, let s use them to make our point! Their SPENDABLE INCOME is $35,500 per year, or $2, per month. They have a $120,000 mortgage financed at 8 percent interest for 30 years. Their payment per month is $1,151.00, or 39 percent of their monthly income. This needs to be no more than 29 percent, or $ As you can see, they are $ in the tank already! But that is not the case. Their payment IS $1,151.00! After the mortgage is paid, this leaves a balance of $1, The total payment for their two cars comes to $457.00, or 15 percent of their monthly income. This leaves a balance of $1, While they are close to the ideal 14 percent on autos, this takes 1 percent from something else that is just as important, but at least, they are not way out of line here. The school loans are low interest and long term with payments of $ per month, or 7 percent of their spendable monthly income. While this is a lot of money, it can be one of the last items we set up to pay off. Their credit card debt is at an extremely high rate with a minimum monthly total of $ per month, or 19 percent of their spendable monthly income. 42

42 NOTE: This debt alone will probably cost them their home, if not their marriage. A $5,000 credit card debt, paid at the minimum rate each month, will still exceed $ AFTER FORTY THREE (43) YEARS of faithful monthly payments! By continuing to make the minimum payment each month, both would be dead long before the loan could be paid! But then, this IS Mr. and Mrs. America, who spends $1.17 for each $1.00 they take in! Again, this IS why so many good marriages fall apart! Our life style has us under such bondage that it is a wonder even more marriages don t end up in divorce! But, let s continue: If you math is any good, this couple has already spent 80 percent of their money and now have only $ left to live! To speed up this process, let s take the items they still need, and look at them closely. ITEM PERCENTAGE DOLLAR AMOUNT Food 12 $ Clothing 06 $ Insurance 05 $ Savings 10 $ Entertainment 07 $ Debt Reduction 10 $ TOTAL 50 $1, Are you beginning to see why we are in so much trouble in America and around the world? 43

43 Put yourself in their shoes! If you had only $ and needed $1, just to survive till the end of the month, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? I mean, they are $ SHORT! Would a good Hot and heated sermon on tithing help you? NO! And yet, this IS what we Southern Baptist get a steady dose of each and every September! This family doesn t give, but IT S NOT because they don t want too! And putting them under condemnation with our good stewardship sermons will REALLY SHOW THEM THE WAY OUT! Yea, you bet! They are ruled by debt and because of this, here IS what they will do! They will leave off the tithe ($417.00), the debt reduction ($295.00) and the Savings ($295.00), and this brings them back to spending $1.17 for every $1.00 they take in! This is exactly what Mr. and Mrs. America has done in the past and will continue to do in the future! THERE IS, HOWEVER, A WAY OUT! By making a commitment to God to put Him first, Mr. and Mrs. America CAN keep their commitment to God and have His blessings! By doing it this way, He will help them get debt free and RETURN to an even greater lifestyle than they ever dreamed possible! Notice, please, I said return, because THEY MUST make major adjustments to their lifestyle. Here is a PERCENTAGE GUIDE for a family of four (4). All that you would need do is change the Gross Income amount to fit your situation as the percentages would stay the same! Look them over and put your debt in each place and see where you are as compared to where you need to be. 44

44 Gross Income $50,000 Percentage Tithe -$5, Taxes -$9, Spendable Income $35, Percent Housing $10, Food $4, Auto (s) $4, Insurance $1, Entertainment $1, Clothing $2, Medical/Dental $1, School/Child Care $1, Savings $3, Debt Reduction $3, TOTALS $35, Percent As you can see, once Mr. and Mrs. America adjusts their style of living to the above, THEY CAN MAKE IT, and they can do this --- WITH GOD ON THEIR SIDE! DECISION TIME! Perhaps even harder than taking the time to put everything on paper, is the moment of truth when everyone in the family decides to do whatever it will take to get debt free. In the case of Mr. and Mrs. America, the first item to go should be their home! Refinancing at a lower rate of interest MIGHT HELP but refinancing WILL NOT make up the huge monthly deficit they are under! They need to sell it and purchase one they can afford. By making this sacrifice up front in order to put God first, He will get them out of debt---and GIVE THEM A MUCH LARGER HOME in days to come! Matthew 6:33 (KJS) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. I well remember the time we moved out of a custom built 2,000 plus square foot home with marble floors, real wool carpet, sunken tubs, etceteras, and moved into a 14 by 48 foot, 2 bed room, 1 bath manufactured home! 45

45 Folks, that s a whopping 672 square feet of living space! That will jar your ego, but it was a GREAT MOVE for us, and once we were adjusted to the move --- AND THE FINANCIAL FREEDOM --- we enjoyed our new home! Why? Because we COULD AFFORD IT! Please DO NOT refer to someone s home by calling it a trailer or a mobile home as it is neither. A trailer is something you pull behind your vehicle and the manufactured homes built today are just like a site built home once the factory or dealer moves it to your property. It is NO LONGER mobile in that it is permanently attached to the ground. While it CAN be moved with the proper equipment, SO CAN YOUR SITE BUILT HOME! Nor are manufactured homes UNSAFE as some would have you believe. Statistics tells us that 33 percent of all deaths that are storm related are people that lived in manufactured homes. QUESTION: Where did the other 67 percent of the people killed by the same storm live? IN SITE BUILT HOMES! In case of a storm, you will need to seek shelter with a friend who lives in a Manufactured home --- ACCORDING TO STATISTICS! The truth of the matter is a storm DOES NOT CARE where you live. I have seen mansions destroyed as well as manufactured homes. It all depends on WHERE the storm hits! BUT BACK TO MR. AND MRS. AMERICA! With a home that costs them $ each month instead of the $1,100 plus they were paying, now they can put 10 percent in savings until they reach a minimum of 3 months income in reserve ($8,874.00)! This will take care of any emergencies that might come up, and they DO come up! They will also have more money to pay on their other debts, so now IS TIME to contact the creditors! 46

46 According to the chart, Mr. and Mrs. America has $ per month to spend on all bills other than the home, autos and student loan. Call each creditor and assure them you fully intend to pay your debt and that you WILL NOT be making any further CHARGE purchases. Tell them that you will be able to pay them $ per month. This is the $ DIVIDED BY each of your credit card bills (Visa, MasterCard, Sears, Penney s, etceteras). They all will receive the same amount. If they work with you, wonderful! If they don t and demand full payment, thank them for their time --- and send them what you send everyone else, along with a letter to the Credit Manager asking once again that they accept the new payment! (Get full documentation with certified mail, copies, etc.) If they DO NOT accept it, ask them to return your check so you can send it to the creditors who are working with you. If they take you to court, any Judge in the land will laugh them out of court because you have already made every effort to set up a payment schedule to pay them IN FULL! Again, you MUST have full documentation! LET S GET ON WITH GETTING YOU OUT OF DEBT! Now, list ALL YOUR DEBTS with the totals owed, but list the smallest amount first, then the second smallest amount and continue to list them until the LARGEST AMOUNT OWED (your home) is on the bottom! Beside each item listed, place the monthly amount. Using our $50, per year figures, the TOTAL MONTHLY AMOUNT will be $1, Each time the top debt is eliminated, continue paying the SAME $1,810.00, but add the amount you were paying on the debt that was just paid, TO THE NEXT SMALLEST DEBT! The temptation will be to pay the LESSER AMOUNT, but your victory STARTS HERE! Continue to pay the entire $1, EACH AND EVERY MONTH, adding the amount of each debt just paid in full to the next debt on the list! 47

47 Doing this ONE THING will get you debt free in MONTHS while paying the NORMAL WAY will take you a lifetime! Whatever you do --- DON T GIVE UP --- as you are on your way to financial freedom! NOTE THE CHART ACCOUNT NAME BALANCE MINIMUM MONTH 1 MONTH 6 MONTH 12 MONTH 20 Sears Visa MasterCard Penney s Discover ! Do you remember that I said a $5, credit card debt, paying the minimum each month, would take over 43 years to pay off? Here we have done it in less than 2 years! While we did not have room on the chart for anything else, you would list everything and continue paying the entire amount EACH MONTH until every debt is paid, EXCEPT THE MORTGAGE! THE MORTGAGE When every bill is paid except your mortgage, start making 13 payments a year instead of the normal 12. A 30 year mortgage can be paid out IN JUST OVER 18 YEARS THIS WAY and will save you thousands of dollars on principal and interest! Some mortgage companies will even let you make payments BY-WEEKLY, or 26 payments each year. You will be making 13 monthly payments this way, but your interest WILL BE LESS because you will be STOPPING INTEREST on one half of your monthly payment! 48

48 Remember, thirteen payments --- NOT TWELVE! All mortgage companies will accept ANY AMOUNT over your scheduled payment. Just be sure that it is applied to the principal! PAY CASH FOR YOUR AUTOMOBILES! There are autos of all shapes and sizes on the market today that you can purchase in the $5, range that will last forever! That is one-fifth the cost of a new automobile! Let s say you have to finance it for 18 months and your payments are $ per month. Continue to make that SAME PAYMENT FOR AN ADDITIONAL 60 MONTHS, OR 72 MONTHS and place it in a savings account. While the interest earned WILL NOT be great, it will add up, giving you even more money for your next car. In 60 months, you will have over $18, IN CASH --- PLUS YOU RE OLD CAR to trade in! At 72 months, you would have over $21, plus your old car! Go to the dealer of your choice and make A CASH PURCHASE for your next car --- AND CONTINUE TO PAY YOURSELF THAT SAME $ even though your car is paid for! This way, you can ALWAYS PAY CASH and save yourself a bundle in interest! CREDIT CARDS You will need to keep one or two low interest rate credit cards for air travel, car rentals, hotels, etceteras, but keep those that have NO ANNUAL FEE and pay them almost IN FULL every month. Leaving a few dollars on each card will actually help your credit! PERHAPS YOUR ARE NOT OVER YOUR HEAD IN DEBT If you DO NOT have to take the DRASTIC STEPS Mr. and Mrs. America had to take, but are heavily in debt, then here is GOOD NEWS for you! 49

49 You can REVERSE your payout in the following manner: After totaling up your debt and income using the above formulas, instead of listing the smallest amount owed first and working down, LIST THE DEBTS WITH THE SHORTEST PAYOUT TIME and work down as you did before! You may have to call all of your creditors and find out HOW LONG it will take to get them paid, USING THEIR MINIMUM PAYMENT! Let s assume that your debt is $4, and it will take you almost FORTY-TWO YEARS to pay them out making the minimum, but you have $ per month that you can pay. As the chart a few pages back clearly shows, you can have them ALL PAID in 17 MONTHS, and still spend the SAME AMOUNT EACH MONTH! As you can see, when we keep making THE SAME MONTHLY PAYMENT EACH MONTH, and apply the payment from the debt just paid to the next debt on the chart, something wonderful happens! THE PLAN IN A NUTSHELL! 1. Figure out how much you owe: Make a list of your credit card statements and other debts by: (1) total amount owed, and (2) minimum monthly payment. List the debts by the shortest length of pay out first and so on Keep the two cards with the lowest rates: Cut up the others. Write to the card issuers and close the accounts. 3. If you don t have a card with a low interest rate, get one. Often times you can get a credit card with a 3.9 percent interest rate for 6 months but it will go much higher in the seventh month. You might want to transfer your credit card (s) with the highest rate to this one---and put it on top of the list to pay off! 4. Resolve that you will not add to your debt: THIS IS A MUST! 5. Add up your minimum monthly payments: Credit cards often require very low minimums. Follow them and you will be paying forever. For instance, if you owe $1,000 on a card with a 17% interest, and pay only the minimum 50

50 payment, it will take you 12 years and cost you $ in interest to pay off the $1, If you can pay over the minimum, pay it: Really stretch yourself here. Remember no pain, no gain. Continue to pay the same amount each month until you have all your debt retired, except your home loan. 7. Apply all of your additional repayments to the next debt on your list: If two obligations have the same interest rate, put the smallest amount of debt on top to pay first. 8. Consider using your savings to get out of debt: Sure it sounds harsh, but if you put together a balance sheet, your debt would cancel out your savings anyway. If they re in the bank, you re probably earning just over 3% to carry debt at 18% or more! 9. Once you ve paid off the balances, continue to pay the same amount until you get your savings back to a minimum of 3 months income. 10. You ve got to be serious about staying debt-free: If you lack selfdiscipline, consider using a debit card on your checking account. Otherwise, pay as you go---the entire balance on each card with it comes in. Go to it, my friend! Now you have the tools to be debt free! Answer the questions starting on the next page.
