2 2 Sam s Desk July goes by quick, so I hope you all have a busy and fun month, with a chance to get to know Amanda for those of you who don t know her. I wanted to inform you all that Amanda and I have been given new positions. As of 25 th of June, Amanda is now the Activity Coordinator and there is no Activity Aide for now. I have been made the Assistant Manager and my duties will change immensely. Unfortunately, this means I will be spending less time with the residents and more time helping Cindy with Manager duties. I know I am very excited to move into my new roll and I am sure that Amanda is looking forward to new challenging duties as well. And Cindy and I are confident that she will do an admirable job. We believe that Amanda likes to be challenged and learn new things and this is the next step for her. As much as I am excited to focus on my new duties, I am sure I will find a way to connect with you all in my own way. I know that Cindy was always willing to help me by running Social Hour on a Friday for me, and I will find something where I can interact with you all. In light of these changes, please don t feel I am putting you off by asking you to get Amanda to help with duties that will now be hers. It is important to Cindy and head office that I hand over the Activity Coordinator duties as soon as is possible, so I can focus on my new duties. This too, will be my last Sam s Desk in the newsletter. But from time to time, Cindy and I will put an article in when we feel there is information that you need to know. I hope you can be patient with Amanda and I until we figure out these new positions we now have. Have a great summer! Sam- Assistant Manager

THE LARKSPUR EACH COLOR VARIATION OF THE LARKSPUR HAS A DIFFER- ENT MEANING: Pink means fickleness; White conveys a happy nature; and, Purple normally represents a first love. Generally, larkspur indicates strong bonds of love. THE WATER LILY The other July flower is the water lily, which signifies purity and majesty. Aside from being lovely in their own right, water lilies are often used in ponds to deter the growth of algae and to shade and cool the water for resident fish and frogs.

5 5 Blurb from Amanda HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE! First off I can t express how much gratitude I have towards everyone making me feel so welcomed back, Amazing you guys are. My first month has blown by and I cannot wait to see what kind of fun we all run into this summer. I really appreciate everyone s patience with me learning the ropes again, allot has changed while I was on maternity leave. There is allot of new faces and I am so eager to get to know everyone! I would like to start off fresh and see what kind of new activities we can get buzzing around the building. I will send out a sheet of new activity ideas and would like to see who is interested in what so we can add them to our new calendars. In the comment section please list any activities that are missed and any pinics or outings that you would like to see happen. I am more then open to all ideas. J A fun fact I read on the internet was that July is National Ice Cream month!! So be ready for some surprise ice cream being served on these warm summer days. It makes perfect sense really July being known for the hottest month of the year in the northern hemisphere, why not cool off with some delicious ice cream as if we needed an excuse to eat more ice cream as is! We will be having our Annual Garage Sale July 28th at 9-3:00pm, donations are welcome. Please call to arrange drop -offs. **Also our Sunday eve music entertainer Brian will be taking the summer off. **Calendars & Newsletters can be found on the blue photo board now

If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen? The cow in the plural may be cows or kine, But the plural of vow is vows, not vine. 12 12 Hornbeck: The Riveting Story Behind the Name Legend tells of a man named Hornbeck, who travelled through what was soon to become the Edson area at the beginning of the 20th century. Hornbeck, along with his business partner, had purchased a large herd of horses which they planned to move to Prairie Creek to sell to the Grand Trunk Pacific Survey team. By the fall of 1906, the two men had driven the horses to the confluence of the Sundance Creek and the McLeod River; the future site of the Big Eddy. Survey crews from the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway had already been through the area and built a few cabins. Hornbeck, his partner, and their livestock were exhausted from the long journey and on the advice of the owner of a small trading post at the Big Eddy, decided to rest on a flat along Sundance Creek to regain their strength. Unfortunately, an early snowstorm came through the area that lasted weeks, and the two men decided rather than risk travel, to build a cabin for shelter and settled in for the season. Although the men had enough supplies to last through the winter, the horses could not find enough grass to sustain themselves. In this, Hornbeck grew more and more anxious as he watched his investments dwindle away. With the first horse s death, Hornbeck went berserk. His partner fled back to the trading post above the Big Eddy, but Hornbeck followed, broke through the front door and started spraying bullets. The three men (Noorgaard, Berthou and Mourrou) managed to escape the building to another shack close by and watched as Hornbeck threw their winter s supply of food into the snow. Days went by with Hornbeck regularly shooting at the trapped men. Out of desperation they decided to shoot at Hornbeck simultaneously the next time he became visible, sharing responsibility for his death. They managed to fell the distraught man. After the shooting a message was sent to the Northwest Mounted Police detachment in Edmonton requesting an officer to attend the scene.

One section of 16 kilometers took four and a half days to traverse due to the depth of the snow and the treacherous muskeg beneath, which lay yet unfrozen. Shand, in his report he described the unfortunate Hornbeck as a large fellow and, due to the sheer size of the man and the inclement weather, it is implied that Constable Shand was unable to continue on to Edmonton with the body but was forced to leave Hornbeck somewhere along the way. Currently, there are two distinct areas that bear the Hornbeck name. The first is the Hornbeck Creek Provincial Recreation Area 16 kilometers west of Edson. The second is the Hornbeck Cross- Country Ski Trails, located 14 kilometers northwest of Edson. While there is no documentation to connect the ill-fated Hornbeck to these areas, his name may have been used as a marking place and descriptor for locals who were familiar with the story.
