5 TASK 2 For texts 1-5 choose one correct option A, B, C, or D and mark it on your answer sheet. 1 From the news Two years ago, this paper reported that one in three companies in the city centre had failed and that no one was shopping there anymore. A year ago, the local council started working on a project to address this problem. They gave grants to anyone starting up a company in the area. The result was that within six months of the project, small companies were springing up on every street and the city centre had been transformed into a lively and successful shopping centre. What is true? A. The local council addressed at least three companies. B. The project helped to revitalize the city centre. C. Grants were given to companies two years ago. D. Even big companies participated in development of the centre. 2 From a criminalist s diary Kai Turner himself was from a deeply dysfunctional family. His mother was an alcoholic who was incapable of looking after her son. His father left the family when Turner was two years old, never to return. His mother had a series of relationships that lasted a month or two. The young Turner was therefore brought up by a lot of casual acquaintances. This was, in every way, the opposite of a stable family. The boy was isolated, with no siblings and few friends. Neighbours described him as a wild child, completely out of control. What is true? A. Turner s mother, due to her addiction, failed to bring up her son. B. Turner was raised by several different relatives. C. Turner felt lonely and did not have any friends. D. Neighbours considered Turner s family as a working one. 3 From a travel website At MeTime.com, learning and leisure time go hand in hand. Learn a language while enjoying the Mediterranean sun. At MeTime.com, our tutors will be there when you want them, but we understand the importance of free time. So, if you re engrossed in your book or simply enjoying a lie-in, there s no pressure to attend classes. What is true? A. The classes always require your active participation. B. Tutors are available only when the weather is sunny. C. You can have your own plan of lessons you are interested in. D. The goal of MeTime.com is to provide relaxation at the Mediterranean Sea.
6 4 From a conversation Of all my friends, I suppose I d have to call Brendan my best mate. We were at school together and we ve stayed close all these years. I usually see him at least once a week. He s funny and fascinating to talk to really good company. I m not too keen on his girlfriend Kitty, though. We d be happy to sit chatting all evening, but she s easily bored and always wants to be doing something new. She gets cross if we go out without her too. She also often gets furious about the tiniest things. We know that she ll usually calm down fairly soon, but sometimes it can be embarrassing. Which is true about Brendan? A. Brendan meets his girlfriend regularly every week. B. Brendan usually knows how to calm down Kitty. C. Brendan likes going out and doing new things. D. Brendan is an entertaining companion and schoolmate. 5 From the news Last night, Joe Bloggs was arrested on suspicion of robbery. The police had no proof that he had committed the crime and Joe denied the charge saying he had a good alibi. When he was put on trial, the police called several witnesses to the stand but Joe s lawyer defended his client well and tried to prove that Joe had not done anything illegal. However, the jury found Joe guilty and he was sentenced to six months in prison. As Joe had never committed a crime before this was a very heavy punishment. Most people were convinced of Joe s innocence and his lawyer appealed against the verdict. What is true? A. The jury did not think that Joe is innocent. B. Joe was punished six months ago. C. The lawyer explained Joe s alibi well. D. People wanted a new trial for Joe.

8 TASK 4 Read the text and decide if the sentences below are true or false. Circle T for true sentences or F for false sentences on your answer sheet. School on fire I have been always afraid of fires because when I was eight years old, my boarding school burned down. Even now, I clearly remember waking up in the big bedroom late at night. Something seemed to be wrong, but I did not know what it was. I got out of the bed and walked to the door and put my hand on the glass. It was hot, and even though there were no alarms or bells, it was clear that the building was on fire. There were about twelve of us in the room, but as the eldest, I had to make sure that everyone was safe. I walked round the room telling everyone they had better get out at once. Fortunately, we were all used to practising fire drills, so everyone knew what to do. We made our way down a series of iron ladders to the ground, and all managed to get down safely. As soon as we got round to the front of the building, we saw how bad it was. The flames were hundreds of metres high and reached up into the night sky. The fire brigade was called, but by the time they arrived there was very little they could do and the building was completely destroyed. One boy was killed in the fire, but there is no doubt that many more would have died if we had not practised fire drills regularly. 1 The person was woken up by alarms in the building. 2 Nobody knew what to do. 3 All of them were trained for fire safety. 4 The fire fighters came in time and extinguished the fire. 5 There were no casualties.
9 TASK 5 Complete the following text using the following verbs (A-H). There are three of them which are not necessary. Exams or continuous assessment? How do you feel when you sit an exam? Do you always (1) in getting all your ideas down on paper, or do you sometimes feel that you re making a mess of it? Apart from those lucky few who (2) through exams, most secondary school pupils find them very stressful. Many teachers are aware of the problems their students (3) and use a different method for measuring their progress: continuous assessment. With continuous assessment, students are given various tasks to (4) throughout the year. All their marks are added together to produce a total mark at the end of the year. Students have to take more responsibility for their education because they can t (5) on doing well on just one day. Also, they have more time to think over their work, meaning that they are able to do their best. A B C D E F G H face bring succeed rely know sail decide do
