Descendants of Mehnert Generation No MEHNERT 1 Children of MEHNERT are: 2. i. ERNESTINA 2 MEHNERT, b. June 1828, Leipzig, Saxony, Germany; d. February 22, 1878, Deerfield, Vernon Co., Missouri. 3. ii. JOHANN GOTTFRIED MEHNERT, b. 1830, Germany. 4. iii. CHRISTIAN A MEHNERT, b. March 31, 1836, Saxony, Germany; d. July 03, 1898, Bourbon Co, Kansas. Generation No ERNESTINA 2 MEHNERT (MEHNERT 1 ) 3 was born June 1828 in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany 4,5, and died February 22, 1878 in Deerfield, Vernon Co., Missouri. She married (1) ELIAS THIEME 6,7 Abt in Saxony, Germany. He was born October 29, 1819 in Altenberg, Saxony, Germany 8, and died November 03, 1872 in Devon, Mill Creek Twp., Bourbon Co, Kansas 9. She married (2) GEORGE ROTH March 01, 1873 in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas. He was born 1815 in Alsace Loraine, Germany, and died September 04, 1878 in Deerfield, Coal Twp., Vernon Co., Missouri 10. Notes for ELIAS THIEME: Elias and Ernestine [Mehnert] Thieme and their five children; Therese, Anna, Ernest, William, and Pauline sailed to America on the ship Germania. They arrived at the Port of New York on May 18, The Thieme family trunk which held their possession was built by Elias. It appears to be made from walnut and is approximately four feet long by two and a half wide and three feet deep. The trunk is now in the possession of Anna [Callow] Biles, daughter of Martha [Beetner] Callow, a descendent of Anna Thieme. From the descendent of their children, we have pieced together their American life history. After their arrival in New York, they travel to Pennsylvania to visit relatives by the name of Remsnider[s] before making their journey to Bourbon County, Kansas where Ernestine had two brothers living. They were Christian A Mehnert and Johann Grottfried Mehnert. We assume they traveled by train to Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas. Then traveled about ten miles northeast of Fort Scott to Devon. It was thought that the Thieme family came at the same time as John Gottfried Mehnert, a brother of Ernestine, but the Mehnert family are not listed on the same ship. However, in Kansas 1875 Census - Mill Creek Twp., Bourbon Co., Kansas, there is a John Gottfried Mehnert, age 45; wife Augusta, age 30; and daughter Minnie, age 6 months who was born in Kansas but no other children are listed. Another brother of Ernestine also came to America and settled in Bourbon Co., Kansas. He was Christian A Mehnert. Have in my possession Christian A Mehnert Bible. Avondale Cemetery: The cemetery is located in a pasture near Devon, Bourbon County, Kansas. It is unkempt and many of the stones are broken. However Elias Thieme is not. It reads: Elias Thieme Died Nov 3, 1872 Age [is covered with grass and dirt]. Have Photo of Headstone. A family story according to Martha Ann Beetner Callow states that Elias gave his money to a family member for save keeping as he could not speak the English language and did not understand the money system in America. He shot himself when he found out that there was no money and he did not know how to support his family. The Thieme family trunk that they came to America with is now a possession of Martha's daughter. Elias built the trunk. [have picture]!1

Information received from Martha Beetner Callow received 7/06/99 per Glen Beetner: Glen remembered the family saying the when the Thieme Family came to America, they stopped off in Pennsylvania to visit relatives named Reminsnider [s]. Also from Martha Beetner Callow received 7/06/99: While looking in Large Cemetery, Bourbon Co., Kansas for Lloyd's grandparent s headstones found two Remsnider headstones. One is Michael Remsnider died March and the other the son Henry B. Remsnider, died September 4, The Cemetery book lists the name as Remsnider and Eliza Remsnider purchased the lot on March 5, "Footprints of Bourbon County" lists Mrs. Eliza Remsnider as postmistress of Majella, KS [about 5 miles from Avondale] from January 1892 until August The post office was in her home. Also a Josiah Remsnider lived in Majella, KS. Could they have lived in Drywood Twp. first then after her husband Michael died moved to be near Anna [Thieme] Beetner Waldele? This is just a thought she may have wanted to be nearer Anna and they may be some of the Pennsylvania family they had visited. Notes for GEORGE ROTH: History of Vernon County, Missouri [1887]: George Roth, the farmer, born in 1815, was a native of Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1833, settling in Pennsylvania, where he gave his attention to farming; the maiden name of his wife was Charlotte Weaver, and she was also of German origin. Ten children were in the family, five of whom accompanied the parents to Missouri in Of these William was born in Clearfield Co., PA, May and Adam born in Clearfield Co., Pa, March 9, Cemetery Directory of Vernon County, Missouri: He died at age 63. Letter received from Mrs. Lois [Roth] Bethurem of Kansas City, Missouri; History of George Roth [often called Rhodes] Page 1 George Roth was born in Germany in the area of Alsace Loraine in He came to Clearfield County, PA with a group of immigrants in In the group were at least two families named Weber and twinaned Lilliox, One named Border and another named Wise. These all settled on farms in the same area. In approximately. 1843, George Roth married Charlotte Weaver [Lois has Weber as last name]. It is thought she was born in Vernon County Missouri records shows this couple having 8 children all born in PA. In 1866, George, Charlotte, and perhaps five children started for Missouri along with the Border and Wise families. As they re near Sedalia, Missouri, Charlotte and two of the children became ill with fever. They died and were buried at Sedalia. George and three sons, Frederick about 15 years, William 10, and Adam continued on. The settled on a farm S W of Deerfield, Missouri where the boys grew to manhood. In about 1868 George married Ernestine Thieme at Fort Scott, Kansas. [Marriage certificate give date of Mar 01, 1873 and her last name Thieme] She was born June 1825 and died Feb. 22, George died in Sep Both are buried in Logan Cemetery. It is reported that one of this family of children, as small boy called George wandered away and was never found, a 2nd member named Gertrude ran away from home and was lost to the family. In 1880 or 81 Fred Toth had developed T B and went to some western State. He never sent back any word. In 1881 William married a girl that came from PA, Mary Alice Border. In 1893 William moved his wife and six children to Bozeman, Mont. In 1891 Adam Roth married Ruth Ainsworth and settled on a farm near Moundville, Missouri Page 2 This is recorded in 1967 by Barbara Roth Middleton the oldest known granddaughter of George and Charlotte Roth!2

From hearsay and records on gravestones in Hackbarry Cemetery, I have reached this conclusion. Charlotte Weber had 2 sisters younger than she, Margaret born in 1825, Maggie in In the year after Charlotte married Geo. Roth or Rhodes, Margaret married Godfrey Lilliox, He was born in All of these born in Germany came to PA in In 1845, Margaret first child was born, Katharina. Some of her other children were John, Jacob and Dan. These children were cousins of Charlotte's children Frederick, William, and Adam. Charlotte, Margaret, and Maggie had 3 half brothers also named Weber, George, Jacob, Henry B. and Philip. In 1863, Margaret daughter Katharina born in 1845 married Margaret s half brother Henry B. Weber born in In this way Cousin Katharina became Aunt Kae to Adam Roth. Note on William Roth and wife Mary Alice Border: Bill Border and Parents [all buried at Logan Cemetery] did come from PA with the Roths - but Vernon Co. Census record states that George and Ro Anna Border came from Indiana in 1870 their daughter Mary Alice was 8 years old at the time. They settled in Logan District, but about 1885 the parents and 2 or 3 sons went to Bozeman, Montana and became landowners. So in 1893 William and Alice and 6 kids joined the Borders in Mont. Children of ERNESTINA MEHNERT and ELIAS THIEME are: i. THERESA 3 THIEME, b. 1850, Saxony, Germany; d. 1895, Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas. Notes for THERESA THIEME: She was named for Maria Theresa of Austria. Theresa never married. Theresa was housekeeper to the Bachman Family. The Backman's had an Ice Cream and Candy store in downtown Fort Scott. She commented that her Orthodox Jewish employers observe the custom of not cooking on the Sabbath, Friday midnight to Saturday midnight. She said it was hard to eat a cold meal Saturday evening while odors of the neighbor s hot cooked food drifting in the windows. ii. ANNA THIEME 11, b. March 08, 1852, Altenberg, Saxony, Germany; d. February 04, 1927, Linn Co, Kansas; m. (1) JOHN THOMAS BEETNER 12, October 1871, Bourbon Co., Kansas; b. February 06, 1836, Babaria, Germany; d. September 16, 1882, Bourbon Co., Kansas; m. (2) CHARLES WALDELE 13, January 1888, Bourbon Co., Kansas; b. January 10, 1848, Badan, Germany; d. April 05, 1917, Linn Co, Kansas. Notes for ANNA THIEME: Curry Cemetery; Linn Co., Kansas: Photo of Waldele Headstone - Charles and Anna Notes for JOHN THOMAS BEETNER: John Thomas Beetner came to America in He enlisted June 13, 1851 in the U. S. Army for five years as a Private. John served under Captain John A Whitall in the 5th Regiment of Infantry. He was discharged June 13,1856. He drove a wagon train along the Santa Fe Trail for many years. Notes for CHARLES WALDELE: Curry Cemetery; Linn Co., Kansas Photo of Waldele Headstone. Charles and Anna iii. ERNEST THIEME 14,15, b. 1857, Saxony, Germany 16,17 ; m. UNKNOWN. Notes for ERNEST THIEME: Ernest was 14 years old when he came to America and Bourbon Co., Kansas in May 1871 with his family. According to one family story, he became a civil engineer and moved to Montana where he worked. He is supposed to have married but the wife's name is unknown. They had two sons. It is not known what became of the family. iv. WILLIAM THIEME, b. January 18, 1858, Saxony, Germany; d. February 04, 1939, Linn Co, Kansas.!3

Notes for WILLIAM THIEME: William went to Alaska in the Klondale gold rush of It is not know whether he found any gold or not, but evidently he had gotten frost bitten. The Frost bite scars were found on his body during his final illness while in a Kansas City Hospital. He often commented on the salmon runs in the Alaskan streams. William told how at times the salmon would land on the stream banks in their frantic efforts to leap the falls on their way up stream. From Alaska he returned to Seattle, Washington where he practiced his trade as meat cutter. After he retired, William returned to Kansas to live with his sister Anna who was living alone on her 40-acre farm. When Anna died, he spent the remainder of his life with his nephew and niece, William Otto and Emma Pearl [Osborn] Schmidt on there near by farm in Linn Co., Kansas. He never married. v. PAULINE THIEME 18,19, b. December 21, 1859, Leipzig, Saxony, Germany; d. January 02, 1946, Linn Co, Kansas 20 ; m. EDWARD SCHMIDT 21,22, October 23, 1875, Freedom Twp., Bourbon Co, Kansas 23 ; b. June 29, 1843, Bohemia, Austria 24,25 ; d. August 05, 1916, Linn Co, Kansas 26. Notes for PAULINE THIEME:! Passenger List from "Germans to America Vol. 25 Jan Sep 1871"; pg. 134 Ship: Germania Arrived: 18 May 1871 In New York; Depart from Port of Hamburg Elia Thieme 51 male carpenter from Germany Ernestine 42 female wife Germany Therese 21 female child Germany Anna 19 female child Germany Ernst 14 male child Germany William 13 male child Germany Pauline 10 female child Germany! Pauline worked a department store in Fort Scott, where she met Edward Schmidt. Obituary: The Blue Mound Sun, Linn Co., Kansas; Thursday, January 10, 1946 Notes for EDWARD SCHMIDT: Edward Schmidt as told by William O Schmidt & Louis Frank Schmidt in an interview by Donna J Schmidt in 1966; In 1866, Edward was serving as a cook in the Austrian Army during the seven-week war with Germany. He and a fellow cook over heard the commanding officers discussing the battalion they were in. The officers planned to use their battalion as a decoy against the Germany Army the next day. During the night, the two cooks went AWOL from their unit. They began the long journey across Germany. Hiding during the day anywhere possible and traveling at night. Finally, they reached the seaport. It is not known if the port was Breman or Hamburg. Here, they talked a cargo ship captain into taking them to America for a $1000. He hid them below deck. They were to sail the next day after the ship's cargo was loaded. However, the German patrol that had followed them across Germany, suspected they were on board the ship and planned to search the ship the next morning. Since the ship's cargo wasn't load yet, the German patrol decided to wait until the morning to search the ship. But, the German patrol's plan got back to the Captain and he set sail during the night without his cargo for America. They landed in New York City, New York. The two cooks planned to go to Michigan, but somehow Edward got on the wrong train in Chicago while his belongs and partner went to Michigan or parts unknown and he to Kansas City. Upon arrival in Kansas City, he had only what he was wearing and very little money. He heard of a railroad job laying rails further south in Linn or Crawford County, Kansas. As he had little money, he walked to the railroad job. He worked for the railroad until they went bankrupt. His next job was in Crawford County strip coal mines. He had a difficult time with his fellow workers, who were always making fun of him because he could not speak English. They nicknamed him "Dutch Ed." By some miracle, a large black man nicknamed "Inky Bill" befriended him. Soon the rest of the workers left them alone.!4

Edward worked the coal mines until he earned enough money to buy farmland in Stanton Twp., Linn Co., Kansas. By October 1875 he met and married Pauline Thieme. When Oklahoma opened, he made a run on the Cherokee Strip, but claim jumpers came and he let them have his claim and returned to Kansas. According to the family, Edward had applied and received his U S citizenship but Pauline had applied by not completed her application therefore each year the family would have her sign alien papers at the local post office. Years after Edward had died, William and his sons were walking down the streets of Fort Scott when an old large black man grabbed William and started shouting "Dutch Ed". William at first feared for his life, as he was a little man only five-foot tall. But as "Inky Bill" continued to shout "Dutch Ed", he remembered the story told to him by his father. William finally got through to "Inky Bill" that he was not "Dutch Ed" but his son. He explained that his father Edward had died. 3.
