Home Scripture for ushers anniversary Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, D.C. was founded in 1863 amidst the turmoil of the American Civil War. The story of its beginning recounts the journey of twenty-one black men and women en route to freedom. Their journey took a particular path, yet it exemplified the broad contours of African-American history. The road from slavery to freedom was not a smooth and easy one, but the guideposts of faith and fortitude remained with the people all along their way and carried them to their destination. The growth of Shiloh during the past 125 years, likewise, relates a particular story, but it typifies the enduring tradition of the black church in America. The founding of Shiloh marked not a beginning of strength, but rather a continuum of strength whose roots reached back to the days of slavery in this case, to the Shiloh Baptist Church of Fredericksburg, Virginia. "We would also like to express our gratitude to the many others who have freely given of their ideas, support and labor to make this day possible.". I recommend you don't rely on chance. Among the myriad of wedding program kits and free wedding program templates out there, I found an excellent wedding program sample with a few wedding program ideas as well. You'll notice in the sample wording for wedding programs, the roles of the entire wedding party are included. Nothing is left to chance and nobody is forgotten. Even better, everybody's role and function is clearly listed and nobody is left guessing as to what is coming next. 823 Cherry Hill Road Baltimore, MD (410) "To our families and friends - We are honored that you are here to help us celebrate this very important day in our lives. On this day, we shall vow our love and commitment to one another before God and you. It is our prayer that God be glorified in this service and each of you receive His blessing.". "As our hearts are joined and we begin our new life together, we pause to look at everyone here on our special day. We find it difficult to put into words our feelings to those who share our love and happiness. Words seldom go quite deep enough when thanks should be expressed. We would like at this time to thank those who wish us well. We would especially like to thank our parents and our brothers and sisters who not only

wish us well, but who are always there when we need them. May God bless you always.". Reading by friend, family member, or officiant, etc. See Readings. "These brethren, who have been driven from their homes and. "Thank you for sharing this special day with us. That so many of our friends and family, especially those who came from such great distances, could be here to help us celebrate our marriage means a great deal to us. We pray that God will grant you a safe journey to your homes when the festivities have ended. May He always bless and enrich your lives with joy and love as much as you have enriched our with your friendship and generosity.". Following World War II Southern California experienced a huge population boom many of whom were Catholic. New parishes sprouted everywhere and "older" parishes like St. Paul's built new and larger facilities to hold the crowds. Ground was broken for the current church structure in Construction was completed in the spring of 1958 and the new church, which is still in use today, was dedicated on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29, "Thank you for sharing this service with us. You have added to our joy by being with us on our wedding day.". 823 Cherry Hill Road Baltimore, MD (410) In addition to the Sunday School, meetings were held in various members' homes for weekly prayer and Christian fellowship. It was not uncommon for the freedmen to go from house to house for prayer and worship, since they were without funds to erect religious edifices. Shiloh' founders were of this type. In September, 1863, at the home of Henry D. Peyton, twenty-one members of the Fredericksburg group decided to form a church. Homesick for their old church, but committed to building a bright future in Washington, they set about to establish a new Shiloh here in the District. Rev. Walker also played an influential role in the formation of several other Baptist churches in Washington and the neighboring Virginia area, namely Zion, Enon, and Mt. Jezereel in the District. He supplied each of them at one time or another until a regular minister was obtained. scattered among strangers, long to be gathered into a church. Washington City had become a hub of wartime activity, and about four hundred members of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Fredericksburg were found among the recent migrants to the city during Soon after their arrival in Washington, a Sunday School was organized in a little shanty on L St. between 16th and 17th Streets, Northwest.

Several members of the Fredericksburg group met together in this Sunday School under the direction of J. McCleary Perkins, a white Union soldier. Within this setting, both black and white teachers gave the ex-slaves instruction in the Word of God and also in basic reading and writing skills, for during slavery educational instruction was forbidden by law. "We have waited with much anticipation for this day to arrive and give thanks to God for creating both of us to be with one another. We are also very thankful that our families and friends could be here to share this blessed experience with us. We are grateful for the distances that many have traveled to be here with us today. The love of everyone here warms our hearts and fills us with cherished memories.". "We would like to express our sincerest thanks to all of you for helping us make this day a joyous celebration - especially our parents who gave us life; our families who shared our life; our relatives and friends who helped us grow up to this special day.". The council then examined William J. Walker to ascertain his qualification for the ministry and minister finding him acceptable, recommended his ordination. - Who hitherto [waited] in the king's gate eastward: they [were] porters in the companies of the TEENren of Levi. This passage in particular can be easily incorporated in a speech or sermon for an usher's anniversary. 1 Chronicles 9:19 onwards refers to the appointed gatekeepers, those guarding the, as verse 19 puts it, 'thresholds of the tent'. The following verses then list the various duties performed by the gatekeepers. Another vague reference to an usher, or doorkeeper, can be found in Psalm 84:10. To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.. To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. "Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the money that has been brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers of the threshold have collected from the people. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Now

concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Psalms 84:10. Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters my And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, "You sit here in a good place," while you say to the poor man, "You stand over there," or, "Sit down at my feet," have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? - Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them. But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, "It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses." The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.. Church ushers are well versed in emergency procedures. In case of an emergency, the ushers will take the lead in getting people to safety in an orderly manner. "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. "'I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent,

and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Where In The Bible Is There A Scripture For Ushers Anniversary?. Who Else Was Resurrected From The Dead In The Bible?. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,. Rev. Walker was described by those who knew him as a "stately and dignified man commanding the respect and admiration of all with whom he came into contact." He was characterized as an able and consistent preacher, who won many converts through his forceful sermons. His progressive and farsighted leadership permitted him to accomplish "a great work in building up Shiloh in a spiritual and financial way. Walker's dynamic pastorate won Shiloh many new members and recognition throughout the city. In 1868, only five years after its founding Shiloh had 243 members; 9 Sunday School officers teachers; and 134 scholars. By 1888 Shiloh's tremendous growth was reported in the Washington Post. On September 24, 1888, the Washington Post reported the gala celebration of Shiloh's twenty-fifth anniversary and noted its membership at 850.". "Dr. Sampson gave an instructive and deeply interesting charge to the Rev. Mr. Walker." The service closed with the singing of the hymn, "Blest Be the Tie That Binds.". "These brethren, who have been driven from their homes and. The council then examined William J. Walker to ascertain his qualification for the ministry and minister finding him acceptable, recommended his ordination. This building remained the church home until 1883 when a two-story brick structure, some 52 by 99 feet in size, was erected in its place. On Sunday, September 27, 1863, the {council} again convened at the First Baptist Church for his ordination service. The proceedings related that. In addition to the Sunday School, meetings were held in various members' homes for weekly prayer and Christian fellowship. It was not uncommon for the freedmen to go from house to house for prayer and worship, since they were without funds to erect religious edifices. Shiloh' founders were of this type. He supplied each of them at one time or

another until a regular minister was obtained. Rev. Walker's death on August 18, 1889, was felt very keenly by the citizens of Washington, D.C. and vicinity. The eulogy at the funeral service was delivered by Rev. Samuel W. Madden, pastor of the Alfred Street Baptist Church, Alexandria, Va. Several months later, on January 22, 1890, Shiloh held a memorial service in honor of its first pastor. Eulogies were delivered by outstanding ministers from the Washington area, including Rev. Walter H. Brooks of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Rev. W. J. Howard of Zion Baptist Church, and Rev. R.S. Laws of the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church. According to James A. Payne, William J. Walker was married to Miss Taylor, who died a few years after Walker's own death in Rev. Walker's wife was the sister of Shiloh founder John J. Taylor. The Walkers were TEENless. Music was also a familiar aspect of life at Shiloh during the Walker years. The founders had constituted Shiloh's first "choir." By the time of Rev. Walker's death the church clearly had a choir under the direction of a chorister. James H. Payne and James G. Semple, both founders, were members of this first choir. Payne was the leading tenor and Semple, the first chorister. When Shiloh Baptist Church was organized in 1863, its officers were as follows: Deacons Henry Frazier, Clement Morgan, James G. Semple, Edward Brooks, James H. Payne, Henry D. Peyton, Alfred Pendleton, and John M. Wilson; Trustees William J. Walker, Edward Brooks, John J. Taylor, James H. Payne, Griffin Saunders, Washington Whitlow, and Henry D. Peyton; Church Clerk- John J. Taylor; and Superintendent of the Sunday School J. McCleary Perkins. James H. Payne succeeded Perkins as superintendent of the Sunday School and six month later was followed by John M. Washington. Both Payne and Washington alternated as superintendents of the Sunday School for the next ten to twelve years. >/MediaBox[ ] /Contents 4 0 R/Group /Tabs/S>> endobj 4 0 obj. An early document of the Sunday School revealed that in 1871 members of the Sabbath School were called "scholars," while the officers were the following: James H. Payne, superintendent; Isaiah Mitchell, secretary, and Eliza Jones, treasurer. Isaiah Mitchell wrote to Eliza Jones on December 20, 1871: "You are hereby, authorized to pay over to Isaiah Mitchell all the money you have in the treasury to get refreshments for the scholars' Christmas entertainment by order of the Superintendent.". The founding of Shiloh marked not a beginning of strength, but rather a continuum of strength whose roots reached back to the days of slavery in this case, to the Shiloh Baptist Church of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Having formed the church, the founders sent communication to the various Baptist Churches in the city and received a positive response for recognition from three white churches, the First Baptist Church, Calvary Baptist Church, and the E Street Baptist Church later called the Temple Baptist Church. On September 23, 1863, delegates from the aforementioned churches met at the First Baptist Church in order to convene a recognition council. Dr. G.W. Sampson, pastor of the First Baptist and also president of Columbian College (now George Washington University) served as the council moderator with Rev. John S. Poler of the E Street Church as clerk. Shiloh founder Henry Frazier, senior deacon of the newly-formed church, presented the council with historical facts, augmented comments from William J. Walker. Walker stated "These brethren, who have been driven from their homes and scattered among strangers, long to be gathered into a church that they may worship unitedly as they formerly did." Afterwards, the council unanimously adopted the resolution: At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Shiloh in Fredericksburg had some 750 members, most of whom were slaves. This was a period of both tremendous hope and tremendous upheaval. The war promised a new beginning for black people. It freed them from the harsh and brutal fetter of slavery and presented an opportunity for education and remunerative employment. It offered hope for a new family life one that was free from the interference of the slave master and from the threat of family break-up because of sale. Perhaps most of all, the Civil War

suggested the possibility of justice and equality for blacks just like other Americans. Yet the war also resulted in the loss of many lives, the destruction of poverty, and massive dislocation. William J. Walker had been associated with the Shiloh Baptist Church of Fredericksburg for about twelve years before coming to Washington. It is not clear whether he was free or slave. Accounts of Walker's background reveal contradictory images. Shiloh's well-researched "Eightieth Anniversary Program" states that Walker was born of free parents, while James A. Payne, son of founders James H. and Rebecca Payne and member of Shiloh during Walker's tenure, observes that he was born a slave in or near Fredericksburg in Payne surmises that Walker enjoyed more privileges than most slaves in Fredericksburg. Neither source presents evidence for its claim. Both admit that Walker secured an education even during the days of slavery; however Payne posits that William Walker's uncle, Armstead Walker, who was a well renowned slave preacher in Virginia, was probably responsible not only for William's more favored status but also for his education. Armstead Walker was also one of the "leading colored brethren" of Shiloh Church in Fredericksburg prior to 1854 when the church was still composed of whites, free blacks, and slaves, and he became one of the first black deacons as soon as the church was sold to the black members. Armstead Walker doubtless played an influential role in William J. Walker's spiritual and leadership development while in Fredericksburg and thus helped to prepare his nephew for the auspicious future that awaited him in Washington. that may worship God unitedly as they formerly did.". Organized by whites in 1804, the Baptist church of Fredericksburg would eventually spawn the Shiloh of Fredericksburg, but until 1854 the white-controlled church was structured like many other churches in the slaveholding South. Its black membership constituted some free blacks, but the great majority were slaves. Blacks were subjected to segregated seating in the gallery, with free blacks restricted to the end section and slaves along the side. In 1854 when the whites moved into a new church and sold the original site to the black members, the black congregation continued to be led by a white pastor and could not assemble without the presence of a white person.
