W Gilwell Gazette Volume 3, Issue 5 Today s Weather Will Be. Enjoy!! I do beseech you to direct your efforts more to preparing youth for the path and less to preparing the path for the youth. Ben Lindsey Inside this issue: Patrol Report 1, 3-4 Schedule Day 5 2 Schedule Day 6 2 Capturing the Vision of Scouting Trying to do the job alone 6 5 Beaver As we all know Beavers are a very industrious animal. We, as Beavers, also try to be very obedient. That is why we are so happy! Let me explain why. It involves the scriptures and some basic math. In 2 Nephi 5:10 Nephi says And we did observe to keep the judgments, and the statutes, and the commandments of the Lord in all things, according to the law of Moses. That teaches us that the Nephites were obedient. In verse 17 of the same chapter Nephi says I, Nephi, did cause my people to be industrious, and to labor with their hands. The Nephites were hard working and industrious just like Beavers. If we add 10 and 17 we get 27. Let s go to verse 27 and see what we get when we add obedience and hard work. And it came to pass that we lived after the manner of happiness. What we learn from basic math is that if we are hard working and obedient we can live like the Nephites; after the manner of happiness. We thank all the other patrols for living in this simple way and setting the example to us, the Beavers. We hope that as we, and you, return home and continue these patterns and use the tools we have learned here at Wood Badge that it will set an example and a standard for the boys and others that we work with to follow. Patrol Report July 13, 2012 Bobwhite At first being assigned as a bobwhite was just ridiculous. You would think why is this happening to me? Throughout the week though as we have learned more and more about the bobwhite we have found out that this little bird is amazing and very spunky. He is not the traditional bird that gets scared out of a bush by a predator or a hunter, but the sort of bird that is smart enough to stay hidden and out of danger. This bird is one of the smartest birds on the planet which is saying something when you have birds like the owls and the eagles, both of which are not near as smart as the bobwhite. This bobwhite group is incredible! I could not have asked to be put in a better group. It seems like from the very beginning we all clicked and had that chemistry with each other. It didn t even seem like we went through the stages of team building, we just went straight to the performing stage. During the group competitions we work really well together and just know how to get it done. Even with me being the youngest here at wood badge they have made me feel like I am their equal. They listen to my ideas and just make me feel like an important part of this patrol. I am so grateful for them and could not ask for another group that seems so much like brothers to me. Eagle The Eagles are now a high-performance team, having formed quickly, stormed (Continued on page 3)

VOLUME 3, ISSUE 5 Patrol News little, and normed readily under James watchful guidance. In the patrol games on Thursday, Steve, Matt and Theo cleverly set a new record by balancing 23 nails on the single nail in a log! Matt and Jared, who had to exclude themselves due to prior experience with the challenge, were duly impressed. Had the challenge been completed the way they were taught, fewer nails would have been included. The Eagles also cruised through other activities such as the untie the knot game and the island game. The patrol gets along well and even kindly tolerates Jared! The Eagles appreciated the help of some eager Beavers and Owls to make the west porch sparkling clean for at least 15 minutes! clear up to when the boys ate! Steve, using the skills acquired in his work as a physical therapist, the attributes carefully shaped and polished by his lovely wife of nearly 20 years, and the practical experience gained from the trials and errors of fatherhood, did double duty by serving both as chaplain and as patrol leader. The Eagles were relieved that the Buffaloes missing flag was found and returned unharmed. Knowing that the Buffaloes are Christians who would only do unto another patrol what they would like done unto themselves, the Eagles were happy to participate both in the disappearance and the reappearance of said flag. In the morning at Gilwell Field, the Eagles debuted a variation on Back to Gilwell. It expresses the patrol s feelings about still having plenty to give, not being about to return home after long years of service. Here it is: Back to Gillwell, Affirmative Eagle Style I used to be at Wood Badge, And a good ol course too. And now I ve finished Wood Badging I know what I must do. I m not yet old and feeble, So I can serve much more. As a majestic EAGLE will I soar! Back to Gilwell, Happy Land! I m going to work my ticket cause I can! EAGLES! GILWELL GA ZETTE PAGE 3 Fox I d like to take this opportunity as scribe to offer some advice given to me by a wise Scouter some time ago. Over the years since receiving this advice I have watched and noted that his words ring true. I hope this information will guide us as scout leaders and help us guide and strengthen the wonderful young men we are privileged to serve. This great and sage man explained that our youth are working on becoming adults. They are trying to identify themselves. As a part of this process they naturally want to separate themselves from Mom & Dad. Out of nowhere the ever intelligent Mom & Dad become the ever ignorant. Suddenly the parents don t know anything. Advice from Mom & Dad is tainted at best. The problem is, the know it all youth still doesn t know it all. They become sponges of information, but from sources other than Mom & Dad. This is where we fit in as youth leaders. We have the special opportunity to bond with these great spirits and help guide them through the difficulty of finding themselves. If Mom says Nice boys don t use that kind of language it s somehow not good advice. But, if a trusted leader says the same thing, it s sage, solid advice. I ve talked to parents that mention a youth telling them the wonderful advice a good leader gave. The parents tell me We gave the exact same advice, how is it that is suddenly became valuable?!? Please note this opportunity you ve been given to serve as an example, mentor, and guide for the leaders of tomorrow and pray for the ability to fully fill that role. Owl Be wise, what can I say more Jacob 6:4. For years owls have been a symbol of wisdom and strength for civilizations all over the world. We are honored to be a part of such a rich history and feel that as Wood Badge continues we are the recipients of great wisdom which we need to take back and share with others. As we now venture out as our own Owl crew we look forward to continued learning and (Continued on page 4)
VOLUME 3, ISSUE 5 GILWELL GA ZETTE PAGE 4 friend-shipping and having some fun in the ol Owl Hole HOOT! Owls also possess special feathers that are used to assist with near silent flight. Over the last few days we have been extremely appreciative of those amongst us who have put their own silent feathers to use providing meaningful service in secret. We have witnessed it firsthand amongst many of our troop members and staff. Thank you all. Bear Day Four for the Da Bears brought the members closer together as consideration of others took precedence. The Patrol is definitely Normalizing well and is moving into the Achievement stage. As Da Bears bonded closer together, camaraderie was the key, and success came closer into view. The patrol acknowledges there are many forms of success, and that winning the game, or being in charge, are not the measures of success, but only part of the excitement along the way. True success lies in unity, and Da Bears are uniting! Rod Carroll was the Patrol Leader for the day. Rod is a member of the Lehi 34 th Ward. He has been married for 21 years and has two 16 year olds (fraternal twins). This family of four likens themselves to the Kings and Queens of Narnia as they are the best of friends as well as family. Rod is currently the Committee Chairman and serves the Troop, Crew, and Team. He also serves in the Ward as an Assistant Clerk. Buffalo Missing 1 Buffalo Patrol Troop Guide. He goes by the name of Brad Babcock. Brad has 10 kids and 7 grand children. He served a mission in Taiwan and is originally from Southern California. Brad has worked in scouting for over 17 years. Brad works professionally as a Structural Engineer. If anyone happens to see Brad, please let him know how much the Buffalo Patrol has appreciated his wisdom, help, and encouragement here at Wood Badge. The Buffalo Patrol was proud to serve as the Program Patrol on Wednesday. It is an honor to participate in the activities here at Wood Badge. It has been gratifying to see how the different patrols are doing their best to out do each other in providing service, doing small favors, finding ways to recognize another patrol, and in general, being great. Keep up the good work. Always last but Antelope Never least Tasty If you can catch us Everywhere (Go ahead and ask around your ward when you get home) Lightning fast Optimistic that we can accomplish our goals Packed with great ideas for those we serve, and Eager to bring what we learned back to this week! Here is a paraphrased clip from a conversation Scott had with his teenage daughter on Sunday regarding Wood Badge: Daughter: Dad, do normal people go to Wood Badge too. Pause Dad: Um...what do you mean by normal people? Daughter: You know, young people like me.
VOLUME 3, ISSUE 5 GILWELL GA ZETTE PAGE 5 The following paragraphs are excerpts from Capturing the Vision of Scouting by President David L. Beck, Young Men General President, in the June 2012 Ensign: In a program as demanding as Scouting, some leaders are concerned and tentative and might feel inadequate or overwhelmed. These feelings are normal. The best way to deal with such feelings is to just jump in now. The Lord has called you, and He will qualify you and bless you to the degree that you learn your responsibilities and magnify your calling. Training is essential to understanding Scouting and feeling confident that we can implement the program. Training motivates us to succeed because as we develop a degree of mastery, we gain confidence that we really can be successful Scout leaders. We hope Young Men advisers, in addition to receiving training, are given enough time in their Scout callings to make a difference in the lives of the young men they serve. Young Men advisers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should be the best implementers of Scouting in the world. Training is an important step toward that end. If there ever were a time when our young men needed to associate with adult advisers who are strong in the Spirit, that time is now. As leaders of young men, we have the blessing of working with them during the time that they transition from childhood to adulthood. It is a time fraught with temptations and challenges. What a great privilege and an awesome responsibility we have. Young men need to be guided, motivated, and strengthened by those who are strong in the Spirit. They need to discover through spiritual experiences the intrinsic motivation of being a disciple of Christ to taste for themselves the fruits of the gospel and of the Spirit. Young men need to know that their leaders are men of God who can be trusted, who truly care about them, and who take seriously their Scout callings. Trusted leaders can become a powerful resource to help and bless young men. To edify in meekness means to build up in meekness. A meek man edifies young men with patience, gentleness, and an absolute commitment to do God s will. Confidence and trust are built in young men when they feel that their leaders have the Spirit of the Lord with them. Thank Heavenly Father for this season in your life to influence young men. Be there for them and give them a vision of what they can become as they learn their duty as priesthood holders whether they are wearing a Scout uniform or a white shirt and tie. Young men need shepherds, and we need to be the kind of shepherds God expects us to be (see Ezekiel 34:1 16). Our efforts as Young Men advisers and Scout leaders can have eternal consequences (see Jacob 1:17 19). The adversary does not want us to act, and he will do everything he can to deter us. I pray that we will press forward in preparing the young men of this Church by engaging them in good and glorious things the great work of the Aaronic Priesthood and the wonderful Scouting program.
Trying to do the Job Alone W Utah National Parks Council Boy Scouts of America 748 North 1340 West Orem, Utah Phone: (801) GaZette The Wood Badge Newspaper Dear Sir, I am writing in response to your request for more information concerning Block #11 on the insurance form which asks for cause of injuries wherein I put trying to do the job alone. You said you needed more information so I trust the following will be sufficient. I am a bricklayer by trade and on the date of injuries I was working alone laying brick around the top of a four story building when I realized that I had about 500 pounds of brick left over. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand, I decided to put them into a barrel and lower them by a pulley which was fastened to the top of the building. I secured the end of the rope at the ground level and went up to the top of the building and loaded the bricks in it. I then went down and untied the rope, holding it securely to insure the slow decent of the barrel. As you will note on Block #6 of the insurance form, I weigh 145 pounds. Due to my shock at being jerked off the ground so swiftly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Between the second and third floors I met the barrel coming down. This accounts for the bruises and lacerations on my upper body. Regaining my presence of mind again, I held tightly to the rope and proceeded rapidly up the side of the building, not stopping until my right hand was jammed in the pulley. This accounts for the broken thumb. Despite the pain, I retrained my presence of mind and held tightly to the rope. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Devoid of the weight of the bricks, the barrel now weighed about 50 pounds. I again refer you to Block #6 and my weight. As you would guess, I began a rapid descent. In the vicinity of the second floor, I met the barrel coming up. This explains the injuries to my legs and lower body. Slowed only slightly, I continued by descent, landing on the pile of bricks. Fortunately, my back was only sprained, and the internal injuries were minimal. I am sorry to report, however, that at this point, I again lost my presence of mind and let go of the rope, and as you can imagine, the empty barrel crashed down on me. I trust this answers your concern. Please know that I am finished trying to do the job alone.
