Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving with family and friends and you are all well. Winter is just a couple of weeks away but it seems it is already here and in for the long haul. Perhaps a winter project or two at home or an airplane project will help ease the gray days ahead. As this will be my last "prez sez", I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your help, advice and cooperation over the past several years. It could not have been successful without you. It was indeed an honor to represent this fine club in so many ways. Without a doubt I was blessed to have served as president with a great group of officers over the years. Special thanks to Jim who was always there to lend a hand, filling-in for me in my absence, his advice and taking care of the raffle, etc. To Don, who always kept me informed and organized, taking meticulous notes, sending general information s, his advice and cooperation. To Greg who kept the club financially afloat. I always knew where we stood financially which greatly helped in making decisions, and thanks for all your help and advice. To Linda and Dean for creating and working so hard to make our newsletter, "Wingtips" such a great success, a newsletter which is one of the best, if not the best in the AMA District III. To Lester who served as field control, talking and working with the Mammoth Park maintenance crew to make our field a great and safe field from which to fly. Thanks

The Prez Says continued Lester for helping out with instruction etc. To Vishal for creating an informative and user friendly website. I have just scratched the surface in thanking these people for all their help, cooperation and advice. I wish the very best to the newly elected officers and know that the club is in good hands. Don't forget that pizza and beverages will be served at the December 12 meeting around 8:00 PM. If you wish to bring other treats, please do so as it will be appreciated. It is an LHMAC tradition that the December raffle is a 50/50 with proceeds donated to Operation Santa Claus, please be generous! On behalf of the officers, I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy and Healthy New Year. T h a n ks a g a i n, R ené. Minutes of the Meeting of November 14, 2014 The meeting was called to order by President Rene Marquis with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. There were 27 members present. The minutes of the October meeting were approved as published in the November newsletter. Secretary Don Accorsi circulated a flyer for the 2015 WRAM Show at the Meadowlands Exposition Center, in Secaucus, NJ, February Vice President Jim Pennington announced the raffle prize: a Horizon Hobbies "Space Walker". The Treasurer s report was approved as given by Treasurer Greg Lazarchik. Newsletter Editor Linda Pollock reported that everything is still OK with the newsletter, no problems with mailing. Roving Reporter Dean Pollock asked everyone to please continue sending them news of your new projects and other activities, and include pictures if possible. You can them to newsletter@lhmac.org. Safety/Field Control Officer Lester Faroux reported that the field is in good shape, except for a light snow that appeared there in the past week. President Marquis reported that the website is up and running and is up to date. Old Business: (a) Banquet Report: Linda Pollock reported that approximately 50 people attended the banquet and everything was just "wonderful". The food and service were great and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We were honored by the presence of our AMA District III Associate Vice President, Mark Radcliff, who presented the club with a very nice 50th Anniversary plaque and gave a very interesting talk. Award winners were: Member of the Year Lester Faroux; Most Improved Flyer - Joe Leonatti; Foamie Warbird Pylon Races - Vishal Jariwala; Scale Contest - Rene Marquis; Endurance Contest Rene Marquis; Snyder Cup - Chuck Zera. KUDOS to Linda and Dean Pollock for a super job of organizing and conducting the whole event. (b) Fuel Inventory: President Marquis reported that we still have approximately 7 cases of fuel left, and will still have it available at meetings. Members can also call him and make other arrangements. He does not have any information yet on prices for next year. (c) Refreshments: President Marquis thanked Lester Faroux for his service in procuring the doughnuts and beverages at our meetings for the past year. He also thanked those who brought in extra "goodies" at some meetings. We still need a volunteer for next year's refreshments (or there will NOT be any). (d) 50th Anniversary Jackets: President Marquis suggested that each member purchase a jacket of your own choice and take it to Big Frog's (Route 30, across from Greengate) and have them embroider our 50th Anniversary logo on it. He said that Sam's club has some very nice jackets for about $30. The cost of the embroidery is $65, plus an extra $5 if you want your name on it. Thanks to Bill Cecchetti, Sr., for making the arrangements. (e) AMA 50th Anniversary Plaque: President Marquis showed the membership the 50th Anniversary Plaque that District III Vice President Mark Radcliff presented to our club at the banquet. He also expressed a desire to find some location for displaying the club's past and present awards. He is open to any suggestions for that purpose. (f) Nominations of Officers: President Marquis asked for any other nominations of officers from the floor before elections. There being none, the nominations were closed and voting took place during the break. New Business: (a) Election Results: The results of the election of officers are as follows: President: Ron Morgan Vice President: Bill Cecchetti, Sr. Treasurer: Linda Pollock Secretary: Don Accorsi Safety/Field Control Officer: Tim Bartlow (b) SIG Manufacturing: President Marquis reported for everyone's information, that SIG Manufacturing is now handling a full line of Seagull RC planes.

Minutes continued: (c) Next Meeting: Our next meeting will be Friday, December 12th, 7:30 PM, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Trauger. It will be our annual Christmas meeting. Pizza and beverages will be provided by the club. Other "goodies" are also welcome. The raffle will be a 50/50 drawing with the proceeds going to Operation Santa Claus. The business portion of the meeting will be brief, and the new officers will take over. Doug Hagy showed a sweat shirt that he had printed (not embroidered) by Big Frog with our new 50th anniversary logo. They did a nice job for $15. Show & Tell: Bill Kline showed his World Models Wings Maker Japanese Zero. It has a 60 inch wingspan, an O.S. Raffle: The winner of the Horizon Hobbies "Space Walker" was Don Gilbert. 75 AX engine, flaps and servo retracts. Some parts had to be modified to fit. Don Gilbert showed his bipe that he purchased at Bob Welte's auction. He is trying to find out what it is called and who its kit manufacturer was. Some people thought it looks like a Concept Models The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 PM. Don Accorsi Respectfully submitted, "Fleet", but no one knew for sure. It is powered by an old Quadra 35cc. engine and has an 8 ft. wingspan and part of a smoke system. He plans to get it back into flying condition.

Your Roving Reporter From: The Roving Reporter Hi Again Everyone! We did not fair very well for November flying, as another Polar Cold front came through. It was a COLD and WINDY month, and I think we eked out 3 or 4 decent days. Sunday, Nov 21st, and Monday the 22nd gave us 2 nice days, and we had a nice crowd at the field. We also had a nice couple on horseback come by. The field is in pretty good condition, and it appears that it was mowed sometime during the month. It should be good until springtime again. We had a visit from a previous member, Tim DeArmitt and his wife, stopped by and it was really good to see him again. He said he still has all of his planes and will hopefully get some of them updated to flying condition. He

Your Roving Reporter continued and his wife are living in Meyersdale, PA, and are doing well. We had a lot of great conversation, and he did remember most of us old timers. Nov 2nd was the Annual Akron, Ohio RC Swap Meet, and Lester and I drove out for the day. Weather was nice for the day, and the turnout for the event was excellent. The venue is a very nicely laid out building, and the room is quite large. There was plenty to go around, and there was a nice selection for almost any taste. I picked up a lot of misc. goodies that I needed, and did find 1 nice plane that I just had to have. I bought a really nice kit built, Balsa USA Citabria Pro, powered He s not sure whether to build it, or just stash it with his other collection of kits. ( I d love to see him build it ). Tim Bartlow also attended, and went out Friday evening before the event. Lester picked up a beautiful new Shoestring Racer RTF, with an OS61SF motor. All in all, we had a fun day, and were happy with our latest acquisitions. Not much else news worthy this month, and I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. The Christmas season is upon us, and I hope we get a few flying days in December. I m also looking forward to the Annual New Years Day Fun Fly at the field. I ve got my ski s waxed, and ready to go. I have added a pictorial Year In Review to show some of the highlights and member photos. Until next month, Merry Christmas to all, and have a safe and Happy Holiday. Your Roving Reporter Dean Pollock with an OS120 four stroke, RTF. It also came with a really nice set of floats. Lester picked up an extremely rare kit, BNIB, Top Flite Elder biplane. Wow, what a huge box of lumber.

PEARL HARBOR Just before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The barrage lasted just two hours, but it was devastating: The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and almost 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. The day after the assault, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan; Congress approved his declaration with just one dissenting vote. Three days later, Japanese allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the United States, and again Congress reciprocated. More than two years into the conflict, America had finally joined World War II. PEARL HARBOR AND THE ROAD TO WAR The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise, but Japan and the United States had been edging toward war for decades. The United States was particularly unhappy with Japan s increasingly belligerent attitude toward China. The Japanese government believed that the only way to solve its economic and demographic problems was to expand into its neighbor s territory and take over its import market; to this end, Japan had declared war on China in American officials responded to this aggression with a battery of economic sanctions and trade embargoes. They reasoned that without access to money and goods, and especially essential supplies like oil, Japan would have to rein in its expansionism. Instead, the sanctions made the Japanese more determined to stand their ground. During months of negotiations between Tokyo and Washington, D.C., neither side would budge. It seemed that war was inevitable. But no one believed that the Japanese would start that war with an attack on American territory. For one thing, it would be terribly inconvenient: Hawaii and Japan were about 4,000 miles apart. For another, American intelligence officials were confident that any Japanese attack would take place in one of the (relatively) nearby European colonies in the South Pacific: the Dutch East Indies, for instance, or Singapore or Indochina. Because American military leaders were not expecting an attack so close to home, the naval facilities at Pearl Harbor were relatively undefended. Almost the entire Pacific Fleet was moored around Ford Island in the harbor, and hundreds of airplanes were squeezed onto adjacent airfields. To the Japanese, Pearl Harbor was an irresistible target. A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN INFAMY The Japanese plan was simple: Destroy the Pacific Fleet. That way, the Americans would not be able to fight back as Japan s armed forces spread across the South Pacific. On December 7, after months of planning and practice, the Japanese launched their attack. At about 8 a.m., Japanese planes filled the sky over Pearl Harbor. Bombs and bullets rained onto the vessels moored below. At 8:10, a 1,800-pound bomb smashed through the deck of the battleship USS Arizona and landed in her forward ammunition magazine. The ship exploded and sank with more than 1,000 men trapped inside. Next, torpedoes pierced the shell of the battleship USS Oklahoma. With 400 sailors aboard, the Oklahoma lost her balance, rolled onto her side and slipped underwater. By the time the attack was over, every battleship in Pearl Harbor USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS California, USS West Virginia, USS Utah, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee and USS Nevada had sustained significant damage. (All but USS Arizona and USS Utah were eventually salvaged and repaired.) In all, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor crippled or destroyed 18 American ships and nearly 300 airplanes. Dry docks and airfields were likewise destroyed. Most important, almost 2,500 men were killed and another 1,000 were wounded. But the Japanese had failed to cripple the Pacific Fleet. By the 1940s, battleships were no longer the most important naval vessel: Aircraft carriers were, and as it happened, all of the Pacific Fleet s carriers were away from the base on December 7. (Some had returned to the mainland and others were delivering planes to troops on Midway and Wake Islands.) Moreover, the Pearl Harbor assault had left the base s most vital onshore facilities oil storage depots, repair shops, shipyards and submarine docks intact. As a result, the U.S. Navy was able to rebound relatively quickly from the attack. PEARL HARBOR AWAKENS THE SLEEPING GIANT Yesterday, President Roosevelt said on December 8, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again. After the Pearl Harbor attack, and for the first time after years of discussion and debate, the American people were united in their determination to go to war. The Japanese had wanted to goad the United States into an agreement to lift the economic sanctions against them; instead, they had pushed their adversary into a global conflict that ultimately resulted in Japan s first occupation by a foreign power. On December 8, Congress approved Roosevelt s declaration of war. Three days later, Japanese allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. For the second time, Congress reciprocated. More than two years after the start of the conflict, the United States had entered World War II.

Can you name four types of flaps? From Model Airplane News November by John Reid Don t feel bad if you can t; you are not alone. And did you know that your plane will react to the flap deployment differently depending on the type of flap you have on your plane. For a quick rundown on these all important features, read on and see what Klaus Ronge has to say about how flaps will change the way your plane lands. There are four basic types of flaps: plain, split, Fowler and slotted. The plain flap is simply a hinged portion of the trailing edge. Split type flaps are hinged at the bottom of the wing and create much more drag than plain flaps. The slotted flap is similar to a plain flap, but has a slot between the wing s trailing edge and the flap. The air passing through the slot delays the airflow separation and creates a greater increase in lift with a smaller increase in drag than a plain or split flap. Fowler flaps extend aft and down increasing the wings area and provide large increases in lift with a minimum of drag. Plain flaps lower the wing s trailing edge increasing its curvature and, therefore, its lift. Split flaps generate a lot of drag by disturbing the airflow on the underside of the wing. Fowler flaps move rearward and downward increasing the wing area and curvature. Slotted flaps allow high-energy air to flow from underneath the wing up and over the flap to help prevent airflow separation. Deflecting flaps will cause a twisting action to the airplanes wing. The type of flap as well as the wing s design will determine the amount of twisting action, with the split flap generating the least amount. Deploying the flaps may result in the plane pitching up or pitching down. The elevator must be used to compensate and keep the plane on the desired approach path. Another characteristic of flaps is that the first half of the flap s deflection results in a greater increase in lift while the second half results in a greater increase in drag. Flaps also impart a large structural load on the plane and should only be used at a lower airspeed. Full-size planes have their air speed indicators marked for safe flap operating range.
