1 January 1, 1915 Rev. D.H. Corlie preached an interesting Christmas sermon last Sunday morning. Thursday evening of last week the Sunday School had a Christmas tree in the chapel. Christmas exercises by the children and the unloading of the tree were enjoyed by all. Mr. and Mrs. John Randall and son of Salem, Mass., were guests over the Christmas holidays of Mr. Randall s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Randall. Mrs. Frank R. Dearborn and Miss Hazel Dearborn spent several days over Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Abel Haley at Wolfeboro. Mrs. James B. Walker went to Weymouth, Mass., last Sunday, returning Monday night. Miss Nellie Wiggin is visiting in Boston for a week. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith called on Mr. Smith s brother, Jesse Smith, at Nottingham last Sunday. Miss Mary Cartland and friend, Miss Donnelly, of Dover, spent Wednesday at the Cartland farm. The annual business meeting of the Congregational church and society will be held Jan. 5, at the vestry, commencing at 1 o clock p.m. The fourth number in the lecture course will be a concert in Grange hall, Thursday evening, Jan. 7. This concert is given by the Girls Glee Club of N.H. College, comprised of 25 young ladies. There will be vocal and instrumental music, solos, duets and quartettes. They will be assisted by six young men of the college. Concert begins at 8 o clock.

2 January 8, 1915 Schools opened Monday with two new teachers. Miss Wilson, from New Brunswick, is teaching the school at the Center, and Miss Steele, from Chester, has the school at North Lee. John C. Bartlett went to Exeter last Sunday to visit his brother, Edward Bartlett, who has been ill and quite helpless for some time. Mrs. Frank R. Dearborn and Miss Hazel Dearborn spent a few days in Boston last week. Mrs. Benton Layne and Miss Ethel Caldwell attended the meeting of the art and needlework department of the Woman s Club at Somersworth Tuesday afternoon. Quite a number in town are fortunate in having their ice harvested. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dudley entertained a party of sixteen young friends at a venison supper last Friday night. The annual business meeting of the church and society was held at the chapel Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was called to order by the clerk, and the officers and committees were nearly all re-elected. January 15, 1915 The installation of officers of Jeremiah Smith Grange will be held this (Friday) evening. Deputy Frink of Newington will be the installing officer. Monday evening, Fred P. Comings attended the venison supper at Arthur Simpson s at Durham Point, which was given by the Durham Lodge of Knights of Pythias. Edward Damzell of Exeter visited last Friday with his daughter, Mrs. Myra Gove, at Pine Row. Thomas Tattersall of Lawrence, Mass., spent the day recently at William Carpenter s. Miss Martha D. Walker of Newmarket visited two days last week at Mrs. James B. Walker s, attending the concert Thursday evening.

3 January 22, 1915 The officers of Jeremiah Smith Grange were installed at a public installation last Friday evening by Deputy Simes Frink of Portsmouth, in a very fine manner. An oyster supper was served afterward. A large number attended. Miss Bertha Tootill went to Boston last Saturday. Henry Murphy has returned from the Cottage Hospital in Exeter, where he has been for several weeks, on account of the serious cut on his knee. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith, a daughter, Jan. 18. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason, on Friday, Jan.15, a daughter, Catharine Margaretta Mason. The meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society which was postponed this week will be held next Wednesday evening, Jan. 27. Miss Flora Wellington has kindly consented to act as our Lee correspondent, and Lee people will confer a favor on her and on the ADVERTISER by telephoning or otherwise sending her items of news, thereby making our Lee department more interesting. 4 January 29, 1915 Rhoda Davis went to Dover last Saturday, and on Sunday was the guest of Mrs. William Hall of Nutwood Farm, Durham. William Carpenter went to Dover Wednesday. Tuesday night Health Day was observed in the Grange. A special programme was given. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wiggin have moved to Epping for the winter. They will reside for Clarence Wiggin. Remember the lecture Friday evening, Jan. 29, by Prof. Smith of Durham. His subject will be Our Changing Ideals. Several members of Jeremiah Smith Grange visited Scammell Grange of Durham Friday evening. They reported a very fine time. Newmarket and Nottingham came in for their share of attention also. The last snow-storm we had has restored the sleighing. The woodsmen are taking advantage of it. Miss Ethel Durgin went to Boston Thursday to purchase gift books for the Sunday School. The Mutual Improvement Society met Wednesday evening and spent a pleasant hour.

5 February 5, 1915 There will be a valentine entertainment at Grange hall, Saturday evening, Feb. 13. A very fine programme, consisting of drills, monologues and musical selections, is expected. Also valentine games will be played, and everyone is requested to bring valentines for the valentine post-office. Refreshments will be served. Mrs. Frank Dearborn has returned from Wolfeboro, where she has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Abel Haley. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kingsbury of Pittsburgh, Pa., spent two days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff Mason. Mr. Kingsbury was at one time a professor at N.H. College. Mr. and Mrs. William Carpenter drove to Dover Saturday, returning Sunday. John Conlon is at home for the present. Miss Emma Comings, who is stopping at the Larches, had an ill turn recently, but is now more comfortable.\ George Menter and friends, who have been staying at Ernest Menter s, have left for Portland, where Mr. Menter is employed. Mrs. James B. Walker and Miss Nellie Wiggin spent the day Thursday of last week with Mrs. William L. Priest. Mrs. Thomas Rogers is visiting at Howard Glidden s. Miss Bessie Thompson has returned to Boston. Miss Grace Wellington is visiting a few days in Dover with her sister. There will be a question of general public interest discussed at the next regular Grange meeting. It is hoped there will be a large number present. Owing to the severe now storm, the schools were closed Tuesday.

6 February 12, 1915 Mr. and Mrs. George Hayes of Durham spent Sunday with Mrs. Frank Dearborn. Miss Gertrude Smith, who is in training at the Lynn Hospital, is at home for a four weeks vacation. Miss Nellie Wiggin went to Boston Tuesday to attend the funeral of her aunt, who died very suddenly. Remember the valentine social Saturday, Feb. 13. A fine programme, consisting of musical selections and a farce, also other special features, is expected. Everyone is requested to bring a valentine to post. The small sum of one cent will be charged for postage. Refreshments will be served free. Admission, 15 cents. Come and have a good time. George Dudley was drawn on the jury in Dover this week. Mrs. Albert Dudley and little daughter and Miss Alice Dudley spent the week-end in Haverhill. Howard Glidden has recently purchased the house at Wadley s Falls occupied by Daniel Coffin. Guy Glidden of Derry was in town recently. Henry Murphy spent Sunday in Haverhill. Mrs. E.J. Thompson and son, Clifford, of Cambridge are visiting Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Thompson. The Mutual Improvement Society will hold their regular monthly meeting next Wednesday evening, Feb. 17. The gifts books of the Sunday School were presented last Sunday. A large number were awarded. There will be an entertainment given by J.E.W. Smith of Raymond for the benefit of the Grange, Feb. 23. A harvest supper will be served. At the last regular meeting of the Grange it was voted to award a scholarship to N.H. College to Robert E. Hardy. His friends extend best wishes. Mrs. E.W. Lewis came from Chester last week and is stopping with her daughter, Mrs. Granville Thompson. Albert Dudley and Norman Demeritt have killed a dozen skunks this winter. Harold Bagley and Miss Gertrude Gove of Haverhill, Mrs. W. Lafayette Damzell and little daughter, Frances Damzell, of Exeter visited Mrs. Myra Gove at Pine Row, Sunday. Advertising pays. Miss R.J. Davis has sold her sleigh to Woodruff Mason, and Mrs. William Carpenter purchased her Franklin stove. Callers the last week at Pine Row: Norman Demeritt, Daisy Philbrick, Fred C. York and Wood. Burleigh. Mildred Woodman has returned to Daniel Chesley s, to assist Mrs. Rosa Roberts.

7 February 19, 1915 Miss Annie Connor is spending a few days in Haverhill. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Glidden were in town a few hours one day this week. The missionary meeting met with Mrs. William Caldwell last Wednesday. A large number were present and a fine meeting was had. Miss R.J. Davis and Mrs. Emma Gove went to Dover Saturday. Joseph Bennett of Newmarket took dinner Sunday with F.C. York at Walnut Avenue Farm. Miss Marion Dudley returned to college Thursday, having spent a ten days vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Dudley. Mrs. E.J. Thompson and son Clifford have returned to Cambridge, Mass., accompanied by Mrs. A.E. Thompson and her son Irving. Miss Marion Wiggin of Epping spent Sunday with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wiggin, at Willow Homestead. Mrs. Emma Hale is seriously ill at her home in the Hook. Mrs. Arthur Wiggin and baby spent Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Nellie Thompson, at Walnut Farm. Mrs. William L. Priest spent two days visiting friends in Boston last week. Mrs. Nellie Wiggin spent the day in Stratham Wednesday. It was the misfortune of Ernest Foster to break his thumb close to his hand last Saturday. The Mutual Improvement Society held its monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 17. Don t forget the entertainment given by the Grange next Thursday, Feb. 25. J.E.W. Smith of Raymond will give readings and there will be musical selections. Many who have heard Mr. Smith know him to be a reader of ability and well worth hearing. A harvest supper will be served. Admission, 25 cents. Come and help a good cause. The valentine social which was given last Saturday was a success in every way. There was a large crowd, teams coming from Newmarket, Nottingham and other towns.

8 February Miss Hazel Dearborn went to Wolfeboro Monday to attend the annual reception and dance, given at the Brewster Academy by the Delta Chapter Fraternity of Amicorn Delta. Mrs. Chester Ellison came home from Kittery, Me., one day last week, where he has been logging most of the winter. Miss Esther Garrity went to Durham Saturday and attended the basket ball game. Miss Bertha McDaniel, who is teaching school in Lebanon, Me., spent the holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDaniel. Miss Georgianna Chesley and Mrs. George Bixby and two sons of Haverhill, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Durgin and Mr. and Mrs. George Chesley. Mrs. William Carpenter went to Boston Thursday and returned Monday. Albert Durell of Boston visited his sister, Mrs. Harry Smith, a few days last week. He also called on Eugene Foster Monday. Mrs. Emma Hale is improving slowly. She has a trained nurse caring for her, Miss Mary Nelson of Dover. Mrs. Bert Pray and little daughter, Laura, returned to their home in Ayer Tuesday. Miss Nellie Wiggin is visiting in Dover and Stratham for a few days. Mrs. Daniel Fernald has been quite ill for the past week, but is improving now. Mr. Floyd Cram and Miss Burbank of Newmarket, spent the day Tuesday with Mrs. James Walker. Harry Smith spent Wednesday in Boston. The Misses Comings, who have been spending the winter at the Larches, returned to their home in Enfield Thursday. Mrs. Carrie Weeden of Weymouth is visiting Mrs. James Walker. Howard Glidden is in Boston for a few days.

9 February 26, 1915 Mr. and Mrs. James Walker spent Wednesday and Thursday of last week in Boston. Mr. and Mrs. Jones Stevens spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stevens. Miss Pauline Wilson, teacher in the Center school, spent the holiday with relatives in Boston. There will be an old fashioned spelling bee held at Grange hall, under the auspices of the Mutual Improvement Society, March 3. A fine entertainment is being prepared, consisting of farces, musical selections, eetc. Refreshments will be served. Admission, 25c. There will be a special meeting of Jeremiah Smith Grange Monday evening next, for the purpose of practicing the second degree. It is hoped that all the officers and a large number of members will be present. Mrs. Margaret, widow of Daniel Burleigh, died quite suddenly at her home Friday night, Feb. 19. She was born in Rye, July 23, 1834, and came here to live 62 years ago. She was a good wife, kind mother and was always ready and willing as long as she was able to lend a helping hand to her neighbors who were in distress. She was the mother of five children, two of whom are still living. When her son, Woodbury, was left a widower, with three small children, she took them to her heart and arms, and cared for them as their mother. She found the place to which she was called and filled it with ability, and when God called her she went quickly and quietly. She is survived by five grandchildren and other relatives. Her funeral was held at her late home Monday afternoon. Rev. William Ramsden of Newmarket officiated, with singing by Miss Nellie Wiggin. She had beautiful flowers, which she always loved so well. She was laid to rest in the family lot on the farm. Sleep on, beloved, sleep and take thy rest, Lay down thy head upon the Savior s breast, We love thee well, but Jesus love thee best. Good-night.

10 March 5, 1915 Miss Nellie Wiggin went to Dover Tuesday. The missionary society met Wednesday with Mrs. J. True Bartlett. Mrs. George Chesley is spending the week in Haverhill. The schools close this week (Friday), until the first of April. The scholars of the North Lee school have bought a clock and several pictures with the proceeds from their entertainment given on Washington s Birthday. Jeremiah Smith Grange will be inspected in the second degree at their next regular meeting, March 9. It is hoped a large number will be present. Miss Rhoda J. Davis went to Exeter Feb. 20th, to remain over Washington s Birthday. Edwin Damzell of Exeter spent Washington s Birthday with his daughter, Mrs. Myra Gove, at Pine Row. Miss Flora A. Hall and Blanche A. Hall of Durham, and Raymond Hall of Georgetown, Mass., were guests of Miss Rhoda J. Davis recently. Thomas J. Davis of Duluth, Minn., a native of Lee, who is in Florida this winter, is reported as much improved in health. Visitors at Pine Row, Feb. 28, were Frank Dearborn and gentleman friend, Norman and Gladys Demeritt, Daisy Philbrick and Eugene Foster.

11 March 12, 1915 Andrew and Ruth McDaniel, who are attending school at New Hampton, are spending a short vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDaniel. Charles Fernald, who has been quite ill, is improving slowly. Mrs. Florence Jones of Farmington has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fernald. Mrs. Frank Randall is visiting with her son in Salem, Mass. Mrs. Abel Haley of Wolfeboro returned home Monday from visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dearborn. Mrs. J. True Bartlett went to Boston Monday for a week s visit with relatives. Eugene Curtis has sold his farm to parties in Newmarket. Mrs. A.E. Thompson and little son, Irving, have returned from a visit to Boston and vicinity. Mrs. Rena Corlie spent Monday at Howard Glidden s. Jeremiah Smith Grange was inspected Tuesday evening by Deputy Simes Frink of Newington. After attending to the business of the evening the second degree was exemplified. A good programme was presented by the lecturer. A supper was enjoyed by all. Games were played and the company broke up at a late hour. Town meeting was held Tuesday and the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Town Clerk, Fred P. Comings ; Selectmen, Benjamin Lang, Frank J. Davis, J. True Bartlett, Tax Collector, Fred P. Comings ; Treasurer, George A. Dudley, Highway Agents, Jesse Smith, John Currier, Norman Snell, Auditors, Loren S. Fernald, Arthur J. Thompson. Mrs. Frank Adams Reed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Howard, gave birth to a daughter, at her home in White Plains, N.Y., on March 6th. Mrs. Reed has spent many summers at The Larches, also more recently, with her children at Susanne Cottage, and last summer at Willow Homestead, Lee. Mrs. Benjamin Hovey Miller of Bayonne, N.J., daughter of Daniel F. Critcherson, gave birth to a daughter on March 5th. Mrs. Miller taught school in the Lee Hill district one winter, making her home at Willow Homestead.

12 March 19, 1915 School meeting will be held Tuesday, March 23. Chester Ellison has put up a saw mill on his wood lot. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Glover have moved into one half of Ellison s house to take the boarders. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown and child of Haverhill are visiting at Chester Ellison s. There are a few cases of chicken pox in town. T. Jewett Chesley of Dover called at George Chesley s Sunday. Miss Mary Chesley visited with friends in Newmarket Sunday. The Mutual Improvement Society meeting was held Wednesday evening. Miss Alice Dudley is visiting friends in Wakefield. Mrs. Joshua Cook is ill with a cold. Engines on the railroad set two fires this week. One on the Burnham Buzzell place and one on the Deacon John Thompson place. Mr. and Mrs. Jones Stevens spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stevens. Mr. and Mrs. James Walker attended the automobile show in Boston Friday. Mrs. William Carpenter is quite ill with La Grippe. Her sister, Mrs. James Walker, of Dover is caring for her.

13 March 26, 1915 Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith went to Boston Saturday to attend the funeral of Mr. Smith s uncle, John Doane, of that city. Eugene Foster had the misfortune to dislocate his shoulder Friday. Miss Nellie Wiggin spent a few days in Stratham this week. Mrs. George James went to Boston Saturday for the week-end. Miss Ruth Angel is visiting Mrs. A.E. Thompson for a few days. Mrs. Albert Wiggin has been quite will with the grippe this week. School meeting was held last Tuesday, March 23. Mrs. William Lee was chosen on the school board for the ensuing three years. Arthur J. Thompson was chosen as School Treasurer. There was an informal reception given at the home of Deputy Grand Chancellor Fred p. Comings of K. of P. Saturday evening, in honor of Grand Chancellor Charles A. Frost of Manchester and G.K. of R. and S. Hazelton of Concord, who spent the week-end at the Larches. There were members present from the lodges of the surrounding towns. A trio of deer was noticed in Mr. E. Cram s field grazing quietly, one being a tiny black one. It is a common sight now-a-days, as deer are very tame. John Currier and Wood Burleigh have been cutting alders for T.A. Davis, Esq., to be used at Pine Row in the near future. Frank Dearborn, with a young crew, has been pressing the hay raised on the N.G. Davis farm. His crew consists of Lewis Comings, Herman Keniston and Raymond Hall from Durham Nutwood Farms. The crew boards at L. Philbrick s.

14 March 26, 1915 Edwin Damzell made his monthly visit with Mrs. Myra Gove at Pine Row, Monday, March 15. Harold Bagley attended the funeral of his aunt last week. Theodore Cram called at E.C. Foster s with a fire extinguisher to be left there to be used by Mr. Foster in case of grass fires in this vicinity. He has three on hand. Mrs. Ernest Foster and young family are daily expected from Machias, Me., where they have been visiting among the Foster and Pennell relatives. David Davis of Duluth, Minn., is much improved from his recent mishap. While ski-ing he broke his collarbone and met with several bruises in his fall. Dearborn s hew hay press sent to Wadley s Falls and pressed some hay for the Sawyers. Also pressed about 18 tons at Pine Row. Mrs. William Carpenter has had the pink-eye, but is now convalescing. An automobile party from Haverhill and Exeter dined at Pine Row last Sunday, the guests of Mrs. Myra Gove. Eugene Foster is recovering from his accident of being thrown from his wagon, which resulted in a dislocated shoulder and bruised face. Austin Doeg chaperoned Frank Higgins of Exeter to Pine Row and also to the late Margaret Burleigh s in search of curios.

15 April 2, 1915 Mrs. Forrest of Epping is caring for Mrs. Vine Smith of Wadley s Falls at present. Work has begun on the state road in front of Joseph Cate s. The schools in town began this week. Miss Luella Hoyt of Hampton teaches at the Center, Miss Ada Perkins of Nottingham at the North Side and Miss Carlotta Damson at the South Side. Miss Bessie Cartland and Miss Mary Cartland of Dover visited at Walnut Grove Farm one day last week. E.O. Fifield of Nashua was at Breezy Hill, his summer home, Thursday of last week. Miss Rhoda J. Davis is convalescing from one of her asthmatic attacks. Mrs. Burley Keniston, who has been quite ill, and who went to Exeter two weeks ago for medical treatment, was able to return home last Tuesday. Mrs. Joshua Cook is confined to the house with a cold.

16 April 9, 1915 The students attending Dover High school are having a two-weeks vacation. Miss Mary A. Chesley is visiting this week in Derry, N.H., and Haverhill, Mass. Miss Grace Wellington, who has been visiting relatives in Malden and vicinity, returned home Sunday. It is reported that a law has been passed by the Legislature (?) and signed by the Governor that the penalty for stealing fowl shall be seven years in state prison. Donald Learnard was in town over Sunday. Jacob Cilley visited his mother one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Smith spent the day Wednesday in Dover. Mrs. Ernest I. Foster and two children, Richard and Elizabeth, have returned from Machias, Me. Miss Mary York, who has been spending the winter in Newmarket, has returned to her home in Lee. Mrs. Rose Walker and son Bartlett, are visiting her father, J.T. Bartlett. Herbert Wiggin is visiting his daughter, Mrs. A.E. Thompson. The Grange entertainment given by J.E.W. Smith of Raymond, which was postponed, will be given Friday, April 16. All come and help a good cause. Mrs. Gertrude Foster and family (consisting of daughter, Elizabeth Foster, and young son, Richard Jean Foster), arrived at Hill Crest, Lee Hook (now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Foster), Thursday, April 1. Thomas J. Davis, Esq., sent his sister, Miss R.J. Davis, some fine specimens of Florida fruit, mostly of grapefruit and oranges of the salmon colored flesh (some rusty colored) and some ripe limes, with the green leaves. Quite a curiosity are the limes. Miss Davis distributed the most of the fruit among friends and acquaintances, the Editor of the ADVERTISER being remembered.

17 April 16, 1915 Mrs. Martin Barrett of Boston has been visiting her mother, Mrs. David Mitchell, for a few days this week. Miss Nellie Wiggin went to Nottingham Tuesday evening, to sing at an entertainment. The Woman s Missionary Society met Wednesday in the church vestry. Rev. Arthur Brotherston of Bangor Seminary occupied the pulpit Sunday and was entertained at Mr. Gilman Y. Durgin s. Mrs. Harry Smith went to Manchester, N.H., Thursday. There will be no service at the church for two Sundays. The Sunday school will reorganize the first Sunday in May. Curtis Stimpson is visiting his daughter in York, Maine. Mr. and Mrs. Jones Stevens spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stevens at Lee Hill. Mr. and Mrs. John Clark and little daughter are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menter this week. Mrs. J.B. Walker went to Boston last Thursday. On Wednesday of last week John C. Bartlett lost a very valuable horse. It may be of interest to the townspeople to hear the Rev. B.A. Wilmott, who started in the ministry in this town on a salary of $600 a year, has resigned from his church in Quincy, Mass., and has accepted a pastorate in Roxbury at the Emmanuel church, which is said to be one of the largest churches in Greater Boston. His salary will be in excess of $4, There will be an entertainment given for the benefit of the church April 30. The entertainment will consist of a farce given by about eighteen young people from Durham. Don t forget the entertainment this (Friday) evening by Mr. J.E.W. Smith of Raymond.

18 April 23, 1915 Mrs. Burnham and daughter of Portland are visiting with Mrs. Ernest Menter this week. Mrs. Carrie Weeden is visiting Mrs. James B. Walker. Monday, April 19, a Massachusetts holiday, brought many visitors to town. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peach of Malden, Mass., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith. Albert Durell is also visiting his sister, Mrs. Smith. Miss Mary Costello and Miss Julia Sullivan of Haverhill, Mass., are visiting Miss Marry Connor. Miss Belle Tuttle and Edith Sparrow have returned to their home in Massachusetts. Mrs. J.R. Swift and daughter Gertrude and son Robert, of Everett, Mass., came Friday for a visit at Seven Oaks farm. It is so very dry that fires start very easily. People should be careful about throwing matches, cigars, etc., about. Mrs. Susan Howe of Medford came Monday for a few days stop at her old home on Lee Hill. Mr. and Mrs. George E. Chesley were completely surprised last Saturday night, when coming from the upper part of the town, to find sixteen of Mr. Chesley s nearest relatives assembled at the old homestead, to celebrate his 82d birthday, which occurred Monday, April 19. It was a very pleasant gathering and the guests remained until Monday afternoon. The entertainment given by Mr. J.E.W. Smith of Raymond last Friday was a success. Mr. Smith s many readings were greatly appreciated. He was assisted by Miss Nellie Wiggin at the piano and Miss Alice Dudley on the violin. Tuesday afternoon Lee Hill was visited by a very bad fire, which was started by sparks from an engine on the railroad, on the Pendergast lot. At one time it was thought that the houses on the Hill would be destroyed. The fire was controlled at last, however, by a large crew of men, who came from all the surrounding towns. Although the fire covered a large territory, no serious damage was done.

19 April 30, 1915 Rev. and Mrs. Francis O. Tyler of Hudson, N.H., have arrived at their summer home. Mr. Tyler will preach at the Congregational church for the next two Sundays. G.K. Richardson of Boston called on George E. Chesley Tuesday. Mrs. Belle Gerrity has been quite ill for the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Abel Haley and Mrs. May Leighton of Wolfeboro spent the week-end at Brookside Farm. Will Ellison has moved his mill from the wood lot of Chester Ellison to William Caldwell s lot. Miss Mary Christine Haley is spending the week at Mrs. Frank Dearborn s. Sargent Jenkins is quite ill with the grip. Miss Mary Morrill of Exeter visited Friday and Saturday with Miss Mary Chesley. Mrs. Myrtle Rogers is keeping house at present for Howard Glidden. Mrs. Harry Smith is spending a few days in Boston this week. Mrs. Lucy Thompson spent her 87th birthday, April 27, very quietly at her home at Hilltop Farm. Her many friends wish her many happy returns. Mrs. David Mitchell returned from Boston Wednesday, where she has been visiting her daughter.

20 April 30., 1915 cont. Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Robinson of Epping called at Walnut Grove Farm Sunday. Also Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wiggin spent the week-end with Mrs. Wiggin s mother, Mrs. Nellie Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stevens have moved to the Cyrus Cummings place. Mrs. J.B. Walker went to Boston Friday. Arthur Wiggin has purchased an automobile. At the regular meeting of Jeremiah Smith Grange, held Tuesday evening, the fourth degree was conferred on one candidate. Refreshments were served and games enjoyed. Visitors were present from Lamprey River Grange of Newmarket. Don t forget the entertainment to be given this (Friday) evening at Grange hall. The drama, The District School, will be given by fifteen young people from Durham. Ice cream and candy will be for sale. Mrs. Myra Gove leaves Pine Row, Lee Hook, May 1st. Thomas J. Davis and family of Duluth, Minn., are expected to occupy the ancestral home in Lee this summer. Mrs. Daniel A. Woodman has returned from Concord. Miss Bertha Tootill is at the Massachusetts Woman s Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. James Walker of Dover visited Mr. and Mrs. True Bartlett Monday evening. Miss Rhoda J. Davis, a well-known resident of Lee, died at her home here Wednesday morning, aged 74 years and 8 months. The funeral will be at her late home Saturday afternoon. Further particulars next week.
