3 Sand, Rocks, and Forgiveness! Out of the many stories one of my college professors told us, I remember one in particular. Attempting to provide an illustration for the very important biblical topic of forgiveness, he told us the story of two brothers. Each time there was a fight between the two, they would go down to the river to record the details of the fight: who started it, who said or did what, why was the other brother wrong, and perhaps there was a demand for an apology. The two recorded the details, but the fundamental difference in their actions was where the offense was written. The first brother planned his speech, gathered all the necessary tools, and used his stone-crafting gifts to carve the details on the rocks and stones to ensure his brother would not get away with anything, to manifest publicly his disappointment with his brother, to expose his brother s unceremonious behavior, and to make sure down the road, if his memory failed him, that no one would ever doubt who was right. The second brother went to the river and, just as his feet touched the soft, muddy brown sand, he knelt down and started to write everything his brother had done to him. His greatest desire and hope was that the water would wash away his brother s faults, make them disappear, bury them in the sea, and he would remember them no more. Genesis 37 introduces one of the most remarkable life stories in the Bible. Joseph s blood brothers mocked him, sold him for money to strangers, told lies about him, rejected him, hated him, deprived him of basic rights such as food, clothing, freedom, and speech. It seems that Joseph had every reason to sever all ties with his brothers, vent hatred on humanity, and slam the door on God, but he didn t. Joseph arrived at a very emotional time in his life, a breakthrough moment where the heavy load of adversity meets head-on with the natural flow of forgiveness. In Genesis 50:15-21, we find Joseph doing what sometimes is so difficult to do writing his brothers faults and sins against him on the sand, hoping and desiring that they will be remembered no more. Joseph, instead of becoming vindictive, forgave his brothers and spoke kindly to them. What an example to us as Christians living in a world that is marked with lies, rejection, hate, deprivation, and violations of basic human rights. Joseph s example teaches us how to live. How do you know you have truly forgiven your brother? Ask yourself these few questions: Do I still expect my brother to pay for his faults? Do I have plans to one day meet him back on the same path? When I see my offender, who do I see, an enemy or a brother? God promises in Micah 7:19, He will turn again, He will have compassion on us; He will subdue our iniquities; and... cast all [our] sins into the depths of the sea. Joseph lived a life worth remembering and emulating. We are not forgiven because we forgive, but as we forgive. The ground for all forgiveness is found in the unmerited love of God, but by our attitude toward others we show whether we have made that love our own Christ s Object Lessons, p Practicing forgiveness is at the heart of our own salvation. It is central to our own professional success and personal relationships, and is critical to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to let go of any trace of resentment or degree of hatred or pain. Perhaps, as in Joseph s life, the evil against you and your family, God meant it for good. We should write our brother s offense on the sand, not on the rocks. Forgive others! Elias Zabala, Sr., is the Atlantic Union Conference treasurer and stewardship director. Practicing forgiveness is at the heart of our own salvation. It is central to our own professional success and personal relationships, and is critical to a healthy lifestyle. From the Treasurer at Atlantic Union Gleaner, October

4 NYCARES A program to assist churches in responding to abuse A silent epidemic is sweeping through our communities, churches, and families. Many times, there are no overt signs. Those suffering are often unable or unwilling to speak out and seek help. There is no tidy infographic to show who is affected. Everyone is impacted without regard to race, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual preference, location, or age. This epidemic is abuse. Abuse takes many forms: physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, psychological, spiritual, financial, sex trafficking, domestic violence, child, elder, LGBTQ, and child-on-child abuse. Look at just a few sobering statistics: 1:3 women and 1:4 men have been victims of violence by a partner. (ncadv.org) 1:5 women and 1:71 men have been raped in their lifetime. (ncadv.org) 1:9 girls and 1:53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault. (rainn.org) 93 percent of cases of sexual assault reported to law enforcement involve perpetrators known by the victim. (rainn.org) As many as 40 percent of sexually abused children are abused by older or more powerful children. (defendinnocence.org/2017/03/15/5- facts-child-child-sexual-abuse) As a faith community, we tend to assume those statistics apply to the world; and we shake our heads, comment on how terrible it is, and continue with our regular programing. However, according to studies conducted by Southern Adventist University and others, It appears that Adventists in North America are on par with and in some cases particularly with male victimization higher than national statistics. (archives. adventistreview.org/article/1401/ archives/issue /abuse-inthe-adventist-church) In 2014, the General Conference held a second Summit on Abuse at 4 Atlantic Union Gleaner, October 2017 Visit the Atlantic Union Web site

5 By Tina Shorey COVER FEATURE their offices in Maryland. This summit included Abuse First Responder Training (C.A.R.E. Christian Abuse Response Education) conducted by professionals from Southern Adventist University. As part of the training, participants were paired by region and challenged to make a difference. The New York Conference Women s Ministries Department answered this call by developing NYCARES. When abuse allegations or suspicions are raised, disbelief, victimblaming, and minimalizing are often the first response. Within faith communities, there is also a tendency to weigh the validity of a victim s story against the perpetrator s office, membership history, financial support, and friendships. No matter who is involved, deep-seated belief systems, prejudices, and biases impact every Looking for Resources? NYCARES (New York Conference Abuse-Response Education and Support) is a program designed to assist local churches in developing a plan to respond to abuse issues in informed, non-judgmental, affirming, and helpful ways. The three-fold purpose of NYCARES is to: 1. Promote a consistent, supportive, healthy response to allegations of abuse in line with the General Conference, North American Division, and Adventist Risk Management, Inc., protocol/ guidelines, and local laws. 2. Provide education, training, and resource development assistance to district abuse response representatives and lay people desiring to become NYCARES team liaisons. 3. Advocate open, constructive dialog between the conference and local churches concerning issues of abuse awareness, prevention, and needs. The NYCARES team consists of lay people educated in health and human services, and who are familiar with issues regarding abuse. Consultation with licensed professionals is also utilized. Our goal is that each church will: Have a trained, well-supported local abuse first responder. I considered church people easy to fool... they have a trust that comes from being Christians. They tend to be better folks all around and seem to want to believe in the good that exists in people. 6 COVER FEATURE Create and maintain an Abuse Response, Resource, and Referral Manual for use when abuse conversations arise. This manual includes contact information for police, social services, housing options, counselors, financial assistance, and any other resources found within the church s community that may be useful to victims and survivors needing assistance. Provide love, accountability, and resources to perpetrators, in such a way that church remains a safe place for all who attend. Disseminate correct information to families and friends, and provide a safe place to discuss and explore what has happened. NYCARES is not a replacement for law-enforcement or professional intervention and counseling. Rather, it is a beginning of the journey to understanding the magnitude of abuse, learning how to create safe faith communities, providing correct information and tools for addressing abuse, and supporting a victim s journey to healing. A Challenge The next time you are waiting for the service to begin at church, count out the statistics in a more personal way: 1:3 women and 1:4 men in this church have been victims of violence by their partner. 1:5 women and 1:71 men in this church have been raped in their lifetime. 1:9 girls and 1:53 boys under age 18 in this church experience sexual abuse or assault; and of those as many as 40 percent are abused by older or more powerful children. We can no longer ignore the reality that abuse is occurring within the families, friend groups, and relationships that comprise our churches. God does not grant us a special dispensation because we are uncomfortable, unsure, or find the whole topic distasteful! I assure you that abuse impacts much more than physical and emotional well-being. A victim s eternal life is also jeopardized when godly people teach, through abuse, a wrong picture of who God is, who He says His children are, and the esteem He places on every single life. The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me Matthew 25:40, NIV. The time has come to acknowledge and begin working in the mission fields of our church pews, membership lists, and Sabbath School classes, turning our churches into safe harbors where all of God s children can find rest and bask in the truth of their worth in God s eyes. 7 [adventist youth ministries on the move] Share What You Have Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:16, ESV In a world full of pain and disasters, we cannot stand still. We are privileged to be the answer to someone else s prayer. God is calling us to share what we have for His glory. In 2012, when Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of New York and New Jersey, many volunteers joined hands with Adventist Community Services and the Greater New York Conference Youth Ministries Department to make a difference in the lives of those impacted. I recall visiting a family that had lost everything, including the desire to continue living. Our visit to that needy family was an answer to prayer for them. They were praying for strength to continue living. They said the actions and attention from the volunteers gave them strength to survive their trauma and move on. In another instance, we visited a family that had been without water and food. Without our knowledge, they had been crying out to God for a miracle for days. When we arrived with provisions to supply their needs, they saw agents of God. They praised the God who performed the miracle. We could not have been the miracle for which they were looking if we had not made ourselves available as God s instruments. Memories of Hurricane Sandy are once again vivid in my mind as I watched with horror the devastation of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. They have taken lives and destroyed many homes. In the face of these disasters, the Atlantic Union Conference youth and young adults will not stand still; we will be the hands and feet of Jesus. In a unanimous decision, all the youth ministries directors in the Atlantic Union Conference have decided to shift all 2018 mission trips to the hurricane ravaged areas. We Many homes in Houston, Texas, flooded as a result of the impact of Hurricane Harvey in August intend to show compassion in action. The initial Call to Prayer and Action conference call was supported by many administrators, youth leaders, and others ready to show compassion. Leaders from all levels of the organization pledged their support. We prayed, but recognizing the great need, action plans were laid out in conjunction with Adventist Community Services. In the coming weeks, months, and year we will send multiple groups of volunteers to help clean and rebuild houses. Anyone who desires to be the answer to a prayer and make a difference may complete the online sign-up form (www. auyouth.com). Monetary donations are needed to fund the rebuilding projects. Donations will be used only to build houses and help the needy communities. Assessments have been made and several projects have already been selected. By God s power we shall be the miracle many are praying for. The Atlantic Union Youth Ministries theme until 2021 is Share Your Gift, Change Our World. It is extremely relevant as we face the aftermath of these storms. Now is the time to share what we have and change someone s world, moving with compassion, because actions speak louder than words. One might say that what we are planning is a drop in the ocean, but like someone said, even that drop is needed in the ocean. Share your gift and change our world! istock.com/karl Spencer Andrés J. Students had a chance to enjoy the New England weather and learn some valuable lessons this summer. A Return to Farming and House Repair Many decades ago, AUC students worked on farmlands in Lancaster, Massachusetts. Atlantic Union College brought back a farming program this summer which allowed students to that students leave with not just their degree skills, but skills for life, as well. The College Prep Program Atlantic Union College offered noncredit college prep courses from June 22 to August 11 to high school juniors, seniors, and incoming college students who wanted to improve their skills in math, reading, studying, and writing. Twenty-eight students took part in the program. At the end, they averaged a 20 percent improvement in their learning, with seven coming close to showcased paintings, wood carvings, and more. Many students used their spare time to create works of art, and enrollment director Chris Tulloch suggested that the students put together their own art show. The quality of their work was so amazing that a former AUC art teacher, who happened to stop by, thought it was the work of professionals. Livon Allemaney, who is beginning his studies in the Cisco Networking and Security Certification program, said that working with nature brought a sense of peace to his summer on campus. Students who felt uncomfortable with farming and gardening were given the opportunity to learn about house repair from the staff in the maintenance department. Together they made improvements around campus. At Atlantic Union College it is important 100 percent improvement. According to one student, Overall, the AUC summer session was great from beginning to end. From the teachers to the cafeteria food, the Lord has provided and blessed us with abundance. 9 St. George s Church Community Services Centre Reopens small crowd gathered A at the site of the old St. George s church on Shinbone Alley on July 16 for the reopening of the St. George s Community Services Centre. The center had been closed for about three years and some members never expected to see it open again, especially with other centers closing. The facility s structure was in a state of disrepair until a few faithful members took their time, talent, and resources to bring it to what it is today. Major work was done, including masonry, replacing doors, painting, cleaning up the building, and building a large drop-off box. The rooms are painted different colors representing white for purity, blue for obedience to God s commandments, red for the blood of Christ, and green for hope. Besides the main area being used to display the clothing, there are areas used specifically for prayer, a classroom, an office, and bathroom facilities. The center utilizes the lower level of the building, while the upper level is a multi-purpose area. On opening day, the Health Ministries department was present and provided health screenings. Pathfinders also assisted the guests as needed and refreshments were served. Jimmy Ferguson, Bermuda Conference Adventist Community Services Federation director, was present and gave a few words of encouragement, along with Dora Baker, Adventist Community Services Federation president. 10 Greater New York Conference Kinderhook Church Scatters Seeds On Labor Day Weekend middle aged woman A walked purposefully to the Kinderhook church booth. Someone had told her that the church gives out free water. As she approached the tent, her gaze fell upon the bin of empty water bottles on the floor next to the table, and she let out a disappointed sigh. Just as she looked up, one of the volunteers said, We have cold water. Would you like some? Reassured, she replied Yes! After taking the bottle, she paused and, with a puzzled look on her face, she asked, Why do you give out free water? What s special about this water? The reply came: We give this freely because God offers free water to everyone; the kind that quenches the thirst of the soul. This was just one of the conversations that occurred inside the tent manned by volunteers from the Kinderhook church in Valatie, New York. For the past 16 Labor Day weekends, the church has had a booth at the Columbia County Fair with the help of Livingston church members. The theme: Jesus is the Water of Life. Besides water, blood pressure screenings, and literature, prizes are available for those who answer Bible questions correctly. Now that the congregation has moved into its new building, the booth also allows them to connect faces with the church. Several church neighbors stopped by and expressed a desire to come and visit. One of them, a Messianic Jew, said she was very happy to finally meet the church members. This year, more than 240 pieces of literature were distributed during the fiveday event. Bibles, Steps to Christ, and Bible Readings for the Home were most popular. One afternoon, people were taking Bibles so quickly that one of the volunteers said, We are scattering books of truth like the leaves of autumn! Scattering seeds is what this event is all about. The Kinderhook church members see it as an effective way of connecting with the community. People know they can count on the church to be there when they re thirsty. More importantly, each one of the services provides an opportunity for conversation about spiritual matters. The purpose is to get people to associate Jesus Christ with a positive and refreshing experience. If one person has been nudged a little closer to the cross, There is no age restriction when serving the Lord and the community. From left are Paul Fitts, Noah Fowler, and Edne and Ann Marie James. Kinderhook church members have accomplished their goal. They are called to scatter the seeds. God will take care of the harvest. Maud Celestine, communication leader, Kinderhook church Livingston church members Bill and Ruth McGregor and Anton Kapusi, Kinderhook church pastor, right, pitch in to help. 11 North Bronx Church Reaches Out to the Community The North Bronx church in Bronx, New York, held its annual Health Expo on August 6. The Health, Disabilities, and Elderly Sunsplash was indeed a great success, because our goal was to develop relationships with the community and it was met, said church member Andrew Williams. Community members took advantage of the free health screening. Residents of the neighborhood stopped by the church s parking lot to receive a free check-up. Additionally, members who have had life-threatening health issues in the past took time to help educate others on preventive measures and how to live a healthier lifestyle. A special emphasis was placed on the elderly of the church and community and on people with disabilities, but the event was open to everyone. Attendees had Marvella Murray, North Bronx church Disabilities Ministries team member, became disabled and is no longer able to teach in the public school system. She has a passion for working with people with disabilities. Medical doctors and physical therapists from North Bronx church volunteered their time and were present to share helpful information. Participants expressed what an honor it was to have such services available to them, all for free. Church member Linet Ojwang, who works in the medical surgical unit of Montefiore Medical Center, said knowing she is touching lives that are not able to be reached by other people is what motivates her. David Woods, Maranatha director of North American projects, led the volunteers as they renovated more than 40 dorm rooms. Old carpet and tile floors were replaced with vinyl flooring, old furniture that has been in the dorm rooms since the 1940s were refinished, the walls and ceilings were repainted, outlets and light switch covers were changed, and new light fixtures were hung. The Union Springs church roof was also replaced and the landscape was updated. Maranatha Volunteers International is a mission organization that works with the Seventh-day Adventist Church building schools, churches, and water wells around the world. More than half of the volunteers had never worked on a Maranatha mission trip before. Jere Clayburn, USA principal, said that he has never been part of a mission project, and working with Maranatha has been a learning experience for him. According to Woods, the Union Springs Academy project is unique, because, usually, not many volunteers come from other countries to the United States to do mission work. Volunteers Darren Harriot and his son, Kelon Garmon, came from Texas wearing T-shirts with the words Here I am Lord, Send Me! More than $80,000 was raised to purchase the materials used by the dedicated volunteers for countless hours of labor. This was made possible by a matching gift of $25,000 from the Ray Halbritter Charity New York Conference These Maranatha volunteers helped to renovate the dormitories at Union Springs Academy during this year s campus renovation week. 12 Atlantic Union Gleaner, October 2017 Visit the Atlantic Union Web site

Volunteers for the USA renovation project came from Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, and other parts of the U.S. to help. It was the first time ever on a mission trip for some volunteers. In an article printed by The Citizen, the local Auburn newspaper, Woods told the reporter that Having the [interna- tional] volunteers here has really been a great experience. Many of our North American volunteers have never had the experience of people from another country coming to help us. A lot of Americans are used to going to other places to assist where needs are. Lifelong friendships were made during the two-week event with all the volunteers and the local Union Springs Academy faculty, staff, and community. Everyone became a family with a common mission and cause to make USA better for students this fall and the future. USA faculty and staff would like to thank project volunteer coordinators John Cardinell, the founder of USA campus renovation weeks, and Bill Boyd, both alumni of USA, for their vision, time, and talents. Union Springs Academy administrators, faculty, and staff look forward to next year s fifth campus renovation week and have already invited Maranatha Volunteers International to partner with them again. 14 Cambridge Church Conducts Intensive Evangelism Training About 100 people registered to receive a week of intensive evangelism training July at the Cambridge church in Everett, Massachusetts. Project Deep and Wide focused on misunderstood and controversial topics in Adventism, including intelligent design versus evolution, God and human suffering, salvation, the law, Ellen White, the Sabbath, and health. More than 45 people attended the classroomstyle sessions each night and many more watched via Facebook Live. Darlye Innocent, a member of the church s Health Ministries team, provided timely health information each evening. Edsel Cadet, Cambridge church pastor, and Edson Allan, Personal Ministries director, presented the main topics and also created a workbook that corresponded with each session. Dinner was provided each evening prior to the study sessions to encourage and meet the needs of those who would be coming directly from work. The Cambridge church relocated from Malden, Massachusetts, and, on April 1, celebrated its grand opening in its new location at 43 Norwood Street in Everett. With a goal to be intentional about getting out into their community, Attendees participate in Project Deep and Wide intensive evangelism training at Cambridge church. and to culminate the evangelism training, more than 170 people participated in the start of a new monthly community outreach initiative on July 29. They divided into groups and some visited a local senior care facility, others prepared and distributed 200 blessing bags to homeless individuals around the Boston Commons, and still others ministered at a local shelter for battered women. They ran out of blessing bags within the first 15 minutes of distributing them. Cambridge church members are on the move and are being trained for active and intentional work in their community. Debra McKinney Banks, communication assistant, Atlantic Union Conference Northeastern Conference Stop Texting; God s Calling The New Hope church in Harlem, New York, hosted evangelistic meetings July 15-29, with guest evangelist Dwayne Campbell. Campbell, a pastor in the Central Jamaica Conference and a graduate student at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University, spoke on the theme Stop Texting; God s Calling. Lileth Coke, wife of New Hope pastor, George Coke, explains, We live in such a technological age where people are so consumed with their own world. People are not concerned with what is happening around them and less so about God. We were reminded that God is reaching out to us and we should stop doing what we are doing and listen to Him. The meetings were a good in-reach for church members and an excellent outreach for the community. Prior to the meetings, some 5,000 flyers were distributed inviting the community to attend. The attendance was encouraging and new faces appeared each night. In addition to inspirational singing and the preached word, attendees were given helpful tips on how to live healthier lives, manage their finances, and help their children succeed in school. 15 Mount Sinai Church Emphasizes Women s Ministries The Mount Sinai church Women s Ministries department celebrated Women s Ministries Emphasis Day on July 8. Using the North American Division Women s Ministries theme Gifted to Serve, the goal of the Women s Ministries advisory team is to win souls for Christ. As it makes plans, the advisory team also keeps in mind the mission statement of the Seventh-day Adventist World Church Women s Ministries Department to uphold, encourage, and challenge Adventist women in their pilgrimage as disciples of Jesus Christ and members of His world church. The day s events at the church, located in Queens Village, New York, started with an early-morning prayer breakfast that included a meet and greet, praise and worship, and testimonies. Merlyn Bennett, an elder, led the prayer groups and member Edda McKnight presented a message on the importance of prayer in peoples lives. The Sabbath School, under the direction of the superintendent, Pamela Thomas-Christie, included a play about women of the Bible. The women of Mount Sinai participated in all aspects of Michelle Hill, Bermuda Conference Women s Ministries director and pastor of the Pembroke church, presents the message What Is Your Issue?, during Women s Ministries Emphasis Day at Mt. Sinai church. the worship service. Michelle Hill, Bermuda Conference Women s Ministries director and pastor of the Pembroke church, was the guest speaker. 16 Northern New England Conference Young Adults From Eastern North America Gather at Camp Lawroweld In their quest for spiritual growth and fulfillment and a meaningful place in their church, they came from all directions and from several different unions. But most also came with something else something almost palpable and that something turned out to be a deep sense of frustration. It was the third annual Young Adult Retreat at Camp Lawroweld in Weld, Maine, and, as has become the norm, the sleeping capacity of the camp was overwhelmed and many attendees set up tents on the camp grounds. Of the roughly 160 people in attendance at the August retreat, about 40 came from the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick. A large delegation came from Southern New England Conference, and a notable number of attendees came from states south and west of the Atlantic Union. And, of course, some were from the Northern New England Conference. The crowd was an ethnically-mixed, highenergy group, and times of intense social interaction, especially at mealtime, were engaged in with enthusiasm. The Canadians interacted with everyone around them, switching fluently between French and English, depending on who they were talking to, while there were others who were just as fluent in switching between Spanish and English. The jam-packed dining room was one big mixing bowl where new friendships were formed over trays of truly exceptional food. When asked if they Mark Tamaleaa, Northern New England Conference Youth Ministries director, addresses a packed crowd of young adults. Luiz Sanchez Musical talent was in abundance. They were being guided through spiritual discovery and learning by Northern New England Conference Youth Ministries director Mark Tamaleaa, so they were drawing nearer to Christ and forming a deeper relationship with Him. For many people, this was a prime reason for attending. And they were getting deeper into their Bibles in the process, so this was a second expectation that was being met. Attendees were able to articulate several other met expectations, such as escaping from the rest of the world and getting close to nature (there is no cell phone reception at Camp Lawroweld, nor is there any Internet service a situation attendees have a love/hate relationship with). But as attendees expressed their thoughts about the weekend, through it all ran a thread of frustration. After all, why should they be frustrated? There were, it turned out, several reasons, all of which pivoted on their waxing spiritual experience. At various times throughout the weekend, attendees expressed frustration that there is not 16 Atlantic Union Gleaner, October 2017 Visit the Atlantic Union Web site

17 enough being done by their church to proclaim Christ, particularly to their age group. Their frustration was not targeted at leaders alone. They also were frustrated at themselves for not taking an aggressive leadership stance and simply proclaiming Christ to everyone around them through social media, for instance. Why, they asked, are we not simply becoming leaders in this? As a result of their frustration, a number of ideas were voiced for taking a more aggressive stance toward personal evangelism. Attendees, as a whole, seemed to take strides toward developing their own ministry leadership. In the end, those gathered were wonderful examples of the talented, passionate generation they represent. And nowhere was this clearer than in what was perhaps the base reason for their frustration: that our Something Fishy Going On at Estabrook School The students at Estabrook Christian School in Plainfield, New Hampshire, have been up to something a bit fishy, including recently releasing 22 fingerling trout into a local brook. The school, well regarded for its creative and hands-on learning methods, participated in a program offered by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, whereby the school received a number of trout eggs early in the year, then hatched and reared them in a tank, and observed, monitored, and charted their development. The endeavor is not as straightforward as it may sound trout need moving water with good levels Fantastic food aside, meal time was always valued for its intense social exchanges at the Northern New England Conference Young Adult Retreat at Camp Lawroweld in Maine. message is too important, and the time in which we have to proclaim it too short, for anyone to be taking half measures not leaders, not members, and not themselves. The eggs also need specific temperature ranges and care and, of course, the young hatchlings fry need continued care and a specific diet. For eager young minds, the whole process of hatching and rearing the fish was an amazing complement to the usual creation-based science curricula, this year with a special unit in fish biology. Motorcyclists Visit Historic Church On Sabbath, August 19, a group of 13 motorcycle riders, including passengers, rode from Lancaster, Massachusetts, into central New Hampshire for the annual meeting at the Washington church in Washington, New Hampshire. The group joined other visitors at the historic church that was already filled to capacity, while many others sat on blankets and lawn chairs, listening to the service through speakers set up outside. They also participated in the services, presentations, and guided tours in and around the property. While many brought picnic lunches, most enjoyed the fellowship and food at the buffet under the newly-completed pavilion. This was a high Sabbath for the motorcycle group, says Tom Murray, Southern New England Conference Trust Services director. The Lord graciously granted safety, joy-filled fellowship, inspiration, reflection, and encouragement. To spend a few hours on this modest little property, which is at the very birthplace of a glorious worldwide movement, was both humbling Motorcyclists pose for a photo before leaving Lancaster, Massachusetts, to attend the annual meeting at the Washington church in New Hampshire. in Worcester, Massachusetts. 19 More Than 130 Participate in South Lancaster 5K The Village Church in South Lancaster, Massachusetts, hosted a Let s Move Day 5K Run/ Walk for the community on September 10. More than 130 runners and walkers participated in the event, with ages ranging from elementary school students to adults over 60 years old. For several years, the Village Church had an annual walk for the members to promote wellness within the church. In 2016, Gael Moncoeur, who had accepted the position as Health Ministries director, coordinated a 5K race in an attempt to connect the surrounding neighborhoods with the church and to use the opportunity to give back to the community. From the money raised during the K race, the church donated $1,800 to local fundraising causes, including a medical fund for the wife of a local firefighter who was undergoing cancer treatment, and an organization that assists soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder. This year, proceeds from the K race will go toward teen suicide prevention and the Bread of Life Runners participate in community 5K race hosted by the Village Church in South Lancaster, Massachusetts. food pantry, a ministry of the Village Church. Moncoeur was pleasantly surprised at the number of registered participants for the 2017 race. My faith was weak at first. I was skeptical that it would even happen, because by August we only had people registered. My wife, and others in the church, encouraged me not to lose faith. I gave it to God, and He definitely had His hand all over it, Moncoeur said. Moncoeur took time off from work to post roadside signs, hang posters in local businesses, and he also used social media to gather interest. As the day of the race drew near, more and more names started coming in, including a group of employees, and their family members, from the Atlantic Union Conference and the General Conference Auditing Services. Supported by more than 20 church volunteers, who were on hand to assist with registration, distribute water and snacks to the runners and walkers, and help with many other tasks, Moncoeur s heart was full. One person commented to me that they had never seen such a large crowd in the parking lot, and they didn t know our church did things like this, Moncoeur said. I was impressed at the end how the church members really came out in support at the last minute and showed up to help, because they want their church to be a part of the community.
